GARAGE DOOR LIGHTING - LED Garage Lights - Pt. 2 INSTALLATION
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 чер 2019
- Garage door lighting uses LED lights to automatically make your garage as bright as possible by installing the LED strips to your garage door. When you open your garage door the LED strips that are mounted to the garage door will light up when the door reaches the fully open position.

No one wants to work in a dimly lit garage. We all want the most light possible at all times. Does your current garage lighting get blocked when you put your garage door up? Did you ever wish the light bulb in your garage door opener was brighter? This kit might be for you! Let's see if this kit is all it is cracked up to be.
In the last episode (Part 1) we got all of the LED strip lights mounted to the garage door. In this episode (Part 2) we will install the brackets/connectors and the power supply.
This kit retails for $299 USD at the time of filming this video. I purchased this kit with my own money. The kit has some proprietary connectors that illuminate the lights when the garage door is open all the way. This is very handy for those of us that have recessed can lights or high bay lights that become covered when the garage door is open. This kit comes with four LED strips that mount to your garage door. It comes with all of hardware needed to mount the lights in your garage and the power supply to your garage door opener. I hope you enjoy Pt. 2 of the installation process. Be sure to leave a comment below with any specifics you would like more detail on.

I started this channel with the goal of helping people Plan, Design, Build, and upgrade their garage. I'll take you through the process of building my own garage as well as other garage tours and some product reviews. I've scowered the internet and UA-cam for hours on end looking for one single source of information to help me plan, design, and build my dream garage. I was never able to find a single source for that information, so I started this channel to be that one location. I hope to help you with your garage build and after following along with my build process, help give you the confidence to self general contract your build. If that sounds interesting to you, please consider subscribing!
Let me know in the comments what topics you would like to see episodes on.
Many people are intimidated by trying to build their own garage. I hope this channel will help take the fear out of designing and building your garage. Garage builds are an expensive dream with many critical building decision points along the way. I hope to help guide you through the decision points of building the perfect attached or detached garage for you!

FFS lose the music or at least equalize it.
Rob Gibson I just came to comment the same thing. Had to lower the dang volume every time he wasn’t speaking.
Sorry guys! I wish UA-cam would give you that option after you have uploaded. Hopefully they will add that feature soon.
I wish I could. They don't let you equalize after you have uploaded yet.
@@DetachedGarage you'll need to pay attention to it when you edit.
I definitely agree with the music vs speaking thing. The music was way too loud in both videos. I would have liked to have seen it at night when it really matters, but I like the concept. Thanks for posting.
Thanks so much for the feedback! The next video I do with music will be better. I'll also get some more night shots in future videos and on my instagram. Thanks again for being part of this awesome garage community.
Yes. Not a fan of the music.
@@DetachedGarage Just lose the music. Use the sped up audio.
Yep. No music please. Just listened to half an hour of way too loud club music just to be able to hear when you were talking. But thank you for the instructional videos!
I was going to comment about the sound but seems I dont need to. LOL
🤣🤣 Yeah... I've message UA-cam and no luck for a fix yet.
Awesome video need to lose the dance party mix though holy smokes my ears are still ringing
D Bee Noted! Thanks for watching. Sorry about the ears.
This video definitely needs more B roll, because is surely wasn't long enough.
Genius product!
David Figie it is pretty sweet! I still need to do the switching for it.
Thanks so much for the great instructions! We just installed ours today. The only thing we did differently was to connect all the light strips to the harness and power source before installation. Didn't want to find a dud after being stuck to the tape. 🙃
You are very welcome! So glad they worked out for you. mine are still going strong. Great idea to plug in before hand to test. Cheers!
Cool product, definitely gives me some good ideas for when it's time for my door lighting project. The only suggestion I have is to check the volume levels of the music vs your voice. I'm having to constantly adjust my volume to hear you, and then dial it way back so the music isn't blaring. Keep it up, loving the content thus far.
Thanks so much for the kind words. Was this video any better than PT.1 of the installation video? I tried a few different things to make it better this time. Sounds like those didn't work. I'll have to keep adjusting. I wonder if there is anything I can do in UA-cam to edit the audio level in the time lapse sections. Thanks again for watching and being a part of the garage community!
@@DetachedGarage I would say it's about the same. I can't hear a difference.
@@pole120 Ok thanks... I'll keep working on it.
Nice, thanks for the video. Don't think I'm paying $300 for the kit though... only thing I wasn't sure about was the connection to the door. But after seeing the switch that they supplied I quickly recognized that they are just automotive door contact switches, summit racing has them for about $15. I'll be doing a diy setup of I ever get the other projects done
The kit is nice. I will install them again on my next doors.
No night shots when this would actually be used for? Also how easy would it be to set up wires to turn them on when the door is down?
So now that it has been 2 years, it is a good time to finally ask my question. How many hours do you assume you have on the LED's as far as on time and have they started to yellow yet? Have you taken a comparative picture from then and now to see?
I would say I have well over 1,000 hours on them. I have not taken a comparative picture yet. Pictures really don't do it justice, and white balance of the camera would need to be tracked. I can say that these are still going strong. A few areas of adhesive have popped off, but that was due to improper strain relief from my installation and I have since fixed this.
music gets really loud during time lapse... i appreciate the videos tho!!! THX!
Thank you! Sorry about the music
Thanks for the video. I was on the manufacturer's website and they never show how it is powered---as if it will be eternally a secret on the internet---LOL. I wouldn't order until I saw how it was powered. Pretty awesome connection.
x Steel thanks so much for watching!
The connector for the door is a Dakota Digital Magnum Shooters MGS-2
@@motorman702 The company I purchased from said they have a patent claim on it?
Detached Garage Hmmm that’s really interesting & extremely confusing.
@@motorman702 Agreed!
what if you attached the power supply to the garage door opener light bulb which turns on and off after a couple of minutes?
Already trying some versions of this. Thanks for the suggestion!
Nice idea. It'ls a little long to watch 2 videos to get to the finished product.
Alan King yeah... some of my earliest videos. I have hopefully improved as time has gone on 😂👍
@@DetachedGarage Sorry to be a jerk about it. I applaud you for putting out content. You did a great job! I'll have to watch some of your earlier videos.
Alan King not at all! You should read some of the other comments 😂 no sweat at all. 👍
Great video. I would have like to see night photo and also integrated power with the garage door opener light.
mjw7124 Yeah still trying to decide how I want to hook it up to the opener light
@@DetachedGarage Is it two prong plug or three? www.amazon.com/6-pack-Convert-Socket-Adapter-Install/dp/B07V4G3R3F/ref=sr_1_13?gclid=Cj0KCQiAgebwBRDnARIsAE3eZjT7B39kLTRMwh0lseE5fIaIbKVwXLAG99rBMA5Wvdt7PtcgwJkUySwaAhZSEALw_wcB&hvadid=381101237890&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9006963&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=e&hvrand=5429617401973894887&hvtargid=aud-840076997981%3Akwd-659172728340&hydadcr=3029_10902375&keywords=screw+in+light+bulb+plug&qid=1578782003&sr=8-13
Good job man. I definitely get the concept but honestly I dont work on my car, reload etc with door open. It would be more than cool if the application was two way optional and would also work with door closed but again nice install.
Yeah! I have been trying to find a version with a spiral flex cable that allows you to have the lights on when the door is open or closed. Thanks for watching and for the feedback.
@@DetachedGarage hey checkout @boosted_coyote on ig. He installed an l.e.d assembly in his garage, pretty nice and bright as he is an detailer. I still like your setup and have an electrician friend that I'm going ask if he can it to work when door is closed if I purchase. I mean what you did is very clean and cant really tell it's there until it's on.
@@DetachedGarage looking for something like this myself, any leads yet?
Where can I buy that power bracket?
Garage Door lighting has it in the kit.
What state are you in, that you get to run unshielded electric wire in your garage?
Wisconsin 👍
I tried really hard to watch the whole video because I was really interested in this system. But the music is so loud I finally gave up. Would have been great without the music.
Thanks so much for the feedback. Many other people have had the same comment. As soon as UA-cam allows me to fix it, I'll turn down the music. Thanks for watching! I'll have more lighting videos out soon.
Awesome video. Thank you for taking your time on making this video. I will definitely rig something similar up in my garage. Could you tell me what type or name of that switch where you mounted on the garage rail? I appreciate, cheers 🍻
Nero, Thanks for watching the video! I got this entire kit from Garage Door Lighting. The link to their website is in the description of this video. That will get you what you need for the switch. Thanks again for watching and being a part of this awesome garage community!
Dakota Digital Magnum Shooters - MGS-2P
Jeff Hengehold
Thank you very much Jeff . I found a similar switch but will be ordering the magnum shooter. My LEDs garage project came out pretty good and much cheaper. But I have to thank Detached garage for giving me the idea.
@@ngkm2 Glad you were able to work something out!
@@jeffh4569 why do you need the 2 function with pin? I am new to this stuff. Thanks
the price is steep for that setup, easy DIY. or come down in price!
Sure you could piece it together by yourself, but it is worth the extra money to buy it as a kit.
@@DetachedGarage yeah I know, easier and less time consuming. offer military discounts?
@@jiriza84641 I’m not sure. You would have to reach out to them
Both vids are good. I just don't like how the wires are exposed along the side of the garage door. I guess that's part of their design though...
yep, part of their design. Thanks for the great feedback.
Not a bad video, thank god for fast forward, you need to lower the music volume by 75%, you never showed us a night time look at the light output like you said you would. I give it a 6 out of 10....
I’ll have a 2 year review out soon 👍
What good is this?
When most garage doors are open they block the ceiling lights. This eliminates that issue.
Nice idea, but all the wiring, harnesses, brackets and zip-ties look like heck. In addition, I have a finished garage ceiling, so I can’t attach the power supply and cord to the rafters.
Yeah, the rafter things is a tough one. Not the prettiest power supply to mount to drywall.
No, but you couild attach them to the ceiling or run the wire up through the finished ceiling into the attic for a tight finish.
x Steel good suggestions
Nice videos, just need to lower volume of the music in between talking. Had to continually raise and lower volume.
Thanks so much. As soon as UA-cam allows me to adjust the volume I will get right on it.
Great video, but the music is WAAAY TOO LOUD and OBNOXIOUS. Otherwise, great idea.
Patrick, Thanks so much for watching! I've been begging UA-cam to allow me to edit the volume on already uploaded videos, but they don't have that feature yet. Hopefully soon. thanks for following along with my garage journey!
Why is the damn music so loud
I didn't EQ it correctly, and UA-cam doesn't give you the option to reduce the volume yet after it has been posted.
Holy hell, that music is LOUD!!!
I’ll turn it down as soon as UA-cam let’s me
What happens when you just want the garage open all day while you are working in the yard? Here's an idea: Connect a relay for the LED lights to the switch for your garage lights. Apparently the little supply unit must remain powered.
Yep, if the garage is open, it is running and on. I was thinking about a smart switch to solve that issue.
Please fix the audio on this video. awful!
I wish I could. UA-cam doesn't let you do it after you have uploaded.
music is a joke, its so damn loud. watched the whole deal and not a final night video? that makes no sense lol.
Will be posting a follow up video with night shots soon. The music was a big oversight in editing. Unfortunately, UA-cam does not allow you to reduce the gain after it has been uploaded.
Turn down the music volume
I wish I could
The music between the timelapses is too loud.
I've been trying to reduce the volume level, but UA-cam doesn't have that ability post upload. As soon as they add the feature, I will turn it down. thanks for watching.
I like the system, although it looks a little janky. I wish there was a light sensor so the lights don't come on during the daytime/when it's bright out.
Agreed! A light sensor would be nice!
Huh, couldn't hear what was going, on account burning man was playing. Pick and equalize better music. Some Kenny G
Someday UA-cam will allow me to turn down the volume in certain areas. Until then, be on your volume knob.
My ear hurts from the transition to to the music.
Yes, I wish UA-cam would let me turn down the volume now that it has been uploaded, but they won’t.
Couldn't finish video cause the music was too loud.
Rod Nelson Sorry about that.
music is WAY too loud.
Yep! Agreed, I'm working with UA-cam to try and fix that, but it is not possible in the editing yet.
Awesome video and install. Please stop with the music. Just cut and explain what you did for the love of God. Stop the montage music.
😂😂😂
Might be really helpful but music....
Thanks so much for watching. As soon as UA-cam let's me adjust the music volume down I will.
Good video but horrible sound. Lose the music. Vol up, vol down, vol up vol down.............jfc.
I’ve tried to fix it. UA-cam doesn’t let you change volume settings after you have uploaded.
Maybe delete, edit and upload again. I might not hit subscribe because of it. Please take this as constructive criticism.
Would have been nice to see the "in the dark" picture.
Yep! Link is in the description to purchase the lights. The "in the dark" picture is difficult to pull off and give a accurate representation.
Well that kit is expensive! I had to skip ahead until the end, way too annoying music and way too loud!
Jeff Morefield Sorry about that. I wish UA-cam studio would allow post volume editing
Yes I agree about the cost of a kit, $350 for materials you can purchase from Amazon for less then $100.
I have a two single garage doors, I'd be looking at $700 to install this on my two doors.
The music is horrible! it's reminds me of the super low budget fake DIY videos. Like how to make a spare tire from old coffee beans.
The content is good though. 😀
Thanks so much for the positive comment! :-)
Please re-edit your audio.
I wish I could once it is uploaded
I’m not sure why you said this is a proprietary electrical connector. It’s nothing more than a door jamb connector that’s been used on vehicles for over 25 years
Stop the annoying music!
NO BODY noted.
