So when they played the clip for On the Waterfront with Marlon Brando in it, He says "You don't understand I could have had class, I could have been a contender, I could have been somebody, but I'm just a bum." That was unscripted, Brando improvised for that part of the movie. They should have chosen a better clip.

Okay you have to give Charlie Kaufman a MUCH higher spot especially when its as beautiful, complex, intricate, and intellegent screenplay as Eternal Sunshine and it's structure is one of the best I've ever seen in a movie. I am happy to see Birdman at least get a mention though, for whatever reason apparently a lot of people hate that film but I think thats absolutely ridiculous. For my money its one of the best movies of the decade so far

Citizen kane is a really, really really (i can't say it enough) good movie, but the screenplay is not so good to deserve a oscar. It's my opinion.

I still don't quite get the genius of "Chinatown". I like Polanski's direction, the score, the atmosphere and noir look of the film, yes, but the many moving parts of the film (water wars, incest, etc) didn't quite add up for me. Need to revisit the film though.

***** No it's not, but it's far more concrete, subtle and focused, Birdman is the superior film for sure, it's one of my favourites of all time, but purely based on the script, I prefer Nightcrawler
Once you read Birdman's script you really know what a complex-well made script is.
I love Birdman, but personally I enjoy The Grand Budapest Hotel screenplay a little bit more.

That single line: “Forget it Jake, it’s Chinatown...” just breaks one’s heart into pieces.
It's good to see Chinatown get some love. One of the best films ever made. My favorite Jack Nicholson performance. My favorite Faye Dunaway performance. If it weren't for The Godfather pt. ll, Chinatown would have won the oscar for best picture that year.
Chinatown is a better movie than most of the movies that actually won the Best Picture Oscar in my opinion

This has turned out into one of my favorites WM videos. And the closing is exceptional.
I want to see Her again. Definitely going to re-watch it on Netflix one of these days. Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society and Birdman were really good movies as well.

Tough to find original screenplays nowadays. They'll delete the category once all the movies are sequels and reboots
"all the movies"? the vast majority of movies made are not a reboot or sequel. plus most movies nominated for any category at the Oscars are original as well.

You're right, all we have now are sequels and reboots. A couple of years ago, if i mentioned something from the past, some of my friends would just tare me appart because, its old! Ironic how everything in entertaiment or technology is trying to recreate of be the past nowadays, but people just dont see it. I would be alright if movies, and everything for that matter had some sequels, reboots from time to time and not every freaking thursday! Movies should be a little more well thought up original ideas. Instead of reboots and sequels. Oh well... there's two things that sell! Sex and Nostlgia...

+Couch Tomato I must disagree with you Couch Tomato. Not all movie are going to become sequels or reboots. There are still plenty of directors out there that are still making original movies like the Coen Brothers and Quentin Tarantino along with Woody Allen and many more.
How could they not include Rain Man? That movie touched on an important subject, autism and the affect it has on people.
They should've also included Ghost, Thelma & Louise, and Juno as Honorable mentions over American beauty, birdman, and sunset Blvd.

I never understood why the director gets all the credit and the screenwriter gets none. Unless it's a full-on action movie, a movie's story, characters and dialogue are 95% of what makes it good. The Shawshank Redemption would still be a masterpiece if it was directed by Michael Bay.

Eternal Sunshine only gets an honorable mention? Every Charlie Kaufman's screenplay (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation...) is a freaking creative masterpiece.
+Zachary Danvers Adaptation is one of my all-time favorite scripts. It's one of the cleverest films I've ever seen. That said, it was nominated as an adapted screenplay (imo, the adaption was so radical, it became original) and tragically, it lost to The Pianist. sigh.
I love Charlie Kaufman so much because he is creative and non-commercial kind of artists. He does not release many materials but everything was spot on. I really love his work this year in Anomalisa.

I literally had to pause this video and turn on Good Will Hunting because I forgot how much I love that movie. It has one of the best soundtracks and Elliott Smith was nominated for an Oscar for best original song for "Miss Misery." You should do a video on best movie soundtracks.
Please. Birdman gets an honourable mention over The Usual Suspects, Thelma and Louise, The Crying Game, Almost Famous and Dead Poets Society? That group contains two of the best ever twists, two of the best ever quotes and some of the most memorable characters. Its far too early to gauge how well Birdman will age, but The Grand Budapest Hotel and Nightcrawler were both far more memorable screenplays

Definitely agree with their number one pick. I was so appalled by the ending of Chinatown but it's a sad and disturbing reflection of reality. Out of every movie I've ever seen (aside from Passion of the Christ) this one put me through the most emotional turmoil with it's story. It deserves its spot as a classic and probably the best noir film in cinematic history. Well....... Maybe it's tied with Blade Runner.

I still can’t believe the screenplay for Witness (good movie by the way) beat Back To The Future, a phenomenal movie and a well thought, clever script. ET is one of my favorite movies, and it could’ve easily won today but like Star Wars it was way ahead of its time. I like Annie Hall but Star Wars was on another level.
Though Back to the Future is great it has various major plot holes which actually shows flaws in the plot and writing. But Star Wars was a great flim though. It would have been better if Annie hall won best original screenplay and Star Wars won best picture Oscars.
I like how everyone judges about movie screenplays, while most people didn't even read one.

Timothy Griffin Screenplays get nominated for the way how they are written, not just for the story. There can be things in the movie, which are not mentioned in the screenplay and the other way round. Giving the same screenplay in the hands of two different directors would not make the exact same movie twice.
Btw: Overused exclamation marks and caplock doesn't affect anything you wrote, except for making it look childish.
