I've never sought out Erin's videos, but UA-cam keeps suggesting them because I've searched for many of the bands she interviews. And that's my gripe with her, she's donning a "costume to "fit in" with group of misfits who are purposefully trying NOT to "fit in." Which leads me to believe she really doesn't get it...

Stay Sleazy Productions I wouldn't say that. The backyard punk shows in LA are as punk and DIY as you can. Yes we all paid between 2-5 bucks but you got to see several independent bands. I haven't been to a punk show since 2008 though. I'm just too old and out of touch so I would stick out like a sore thumb.

wow, alot of old vs new punk. heres my take. for those of us who were in the punk scene in the late 70s and early 80s punk wasnt safe. you got picked on, in fights, jumped, arrested, kicked out of places because of how you looked and what you represented. at the time mainstream culture was reacting to the whole hippy/revolutionary scene of the 60s and early 70s and desperately trying to revisit the 50s squeaky clean conformist mccountry, the preppy thing was fucking weird to witness. people who were attracted to the punk scene were already outcasts for the most part, weirdos, artsy types, nerds, gays... basically punk was the glue that bonded us and made our family. we loved our family and if you traveled to some new town you could find the local punk scene and be home. being that we were the first wave to identify as a punk it gave us a pride to be apart of the family and diminished somewhat all the hard times we all went through. also we did everything ourselves, there was no money to be made off our tribe so nobody helped us and we liked it that way. we recorded albums that sounded like shit, made our own clothes...
so here comes the late 80s and the fucking mtv soon to be followed by the internet and all the capitalistic horse shit that came with them. basically some marketing folks got hold this punk thing and realized they could cash in(i remember seeing a gbh, dickies show on mtv) , its over kids!!!! they watered it all down enough to make it palatable for enough of the youth to cash in and that they did. as well main stream society started giving punks a break because after seeing them around for long enough the shock and dismay wore off. so now the look and sound of our small family is being stamped out like so many snickers bars and us old farts cant stand it. im sure theres some genuine hippies that want to destroy every tie die shirt wearer they see, some hiphop pioneers that want to choke out the legions of fans and so on ...
so to us old asses the youngsters just look like kids in costumes, might as well dress up like a cowboy or a sock hopper or some other old shit. i dont blame youngsters for wanting to get into punk, it looks cool, theres some great music and probably still pisses off some parents but its not the same, cant ever be. just like dressing like roy rogers and swinging a lasso, its all veneer.

Punks used to be an underground movement, but like everything like that it gets normalised, more people get into it and it is no longer an underground culture. Happens every 20/30 year's. Of course the 70s punk will look at a 2016 punk and see something different. Society sees it different. Society no longer looks at punks with shock, it has lost its shock factor for the most part. Plus UK and USA have a slightly different punk scene. Seen as we pretty much invented it as a sub culture threw such people like Viviane Westwood, McLaren, sex pistols etc. Do you think john johny rotten is any less punk because he wants to do the Eurovision?

I don't really care if it was the UK or whatever. Punk bands didn't really identify as Punk at all then, until the label was put on them. Ramones said they thought they were playing bubblegum pop. Which by the way is where a lot of UK bands said they got their inspiration from but, whatever.
