After much "experimentation" with my 1995 Mazda MX3, I have found the erratic idle is generally caused by a vacuum leak OR a mis set Throttle Stop Screw (TSS).
The TSS should not be adjusted as it is set from the factory, but if someone has touched it, one of the issues it can cause is an erratic idle.
TSS clearance affects the whole baseline setting of the system.
You would intuitively think that the TSS should contact the throttle, but it DOESN'T.
That's why a mechanic may have previously adjusted the stop.
The Inlet Air Control valve is only trying to compensate for incorrect TSS clearance.
When you changed the whole Throttle Body over, you may have swapped in a properly adjusted (or more likely untouched) TSS and therefore (inadvertently) solved the issue.
I have a couple videos checking for leaks and fixing the issue, but I have found the TSS setting to be the most critical in sorting out this hunting idle.

Another excellent video, thanks Miata Man. I’m over in England but I subscribed and watch all your posts, even though I’ve not got or had this problem on my Eunos. Your videos are so educational and easy to understand, I must let you know some of your videos have helped me out massively. Thank you, looking forward to part 2 👍

Not a good situation. Those idle air control valves are very expensive. I've not found one for less than $650. (new) in most cases they are even more. Used ones are not easy to find. The Miata salvage yard near me say those are the first things to go when they get in a wrecked Miata. There's some underhanded greedy marketing going on for new ones to cost that much.

I recently had problems with my 91, starting up fine, revving ok but would not hold an idle. Idle would drop way down then it stalled out. While taking it apart I found out the accordion section of cross over pipe had some big tears in it that couldn't be seen. Duct taped it up and it idles great now.

You didn't use carburetor cleaner on it did you?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but what does unplugging the iac sensor do to help the idle? What does you unplugging it actually tell you that you need to replace it? I'm having a similar issue and kind of want to understand how everything works better.

Well if the idle air control valve is malfunctioning unplugging it will stop it from operating in any sort of fashion, so it's just sitting in set position. If the idle smooths out like this, then you know it's the issue.

Almost sounds like a vacuum leak but my educated guess would be IAC

Clean the IAC and the IACV both real good with throttle body cleaner.

I'm having a similar issue with my 93 NA, but it's when idle and fluctuates from 100-850rpm, recently it's been even dying. It will go from a stable 850 rpm then randomly Rev down and up and then die. Starts right back up everytime though..too easily it seems.

    • @MiataMan
      @MiataMan  3 місяці тому

There are follow up videos, but in the end it was a water damaged ECU.

@@MiataMan yeah I saw several follow up videos but Missed the final one. That a nasty problem when it turned out to be the ecu. Also expensive.
