I agree that Gloomhaven evokes the feeling of a dungeon crawling d&d game. This is especially true when comparing it to 4th edition, an edition that was widely panned for feeling too much like a "board game/video game" than a "role playing" game. In 4th edition you had defined "powers" that had different recharge rates, e.g. at will, once per fight, and once per day. They were all formatted in the book like cards and they even sold card-ified versions of the abilities. I will say that to me, what makes pen and paper RPGs special is the freedom and the actual role playing, not the stats and number crunching. I like those things too, but those things can be replicated in video games and board games, the interpersonal RP and the narrative freedom are the truly unique things about d&d and the like.

Makes for really fun coop moments (especially when the monster goes twice in a row 😱)
There are many ways to play D&D, and gloomhaven only compares to the dungeon crawling grid based combat that some people use, D&D has roleplaying where Gloomhaven does not really have that, I dont think A or B choices on town/road event cards count.
