Thanks so much for this video, SungWon. Idk if it was easier for me to relate, because I’m also Asian-American, but this was just a really touching video for me Especially the part in the end, where your mother was talking about how she appreciates board games, because it’s a good excuse to bring the whole family to actively spend time together, as opposed to someone watching TV, and someone’s reading a book, another person’s on their phone, etc Board games have definitely given my family an excuse to all spend time together, instead of just sitting in the same room, but doing different things 💙
This was lovely. I feel like my dad and your dad would have gotten along! Nice to hear Just One, that was the last game I played with my dad before he passed. Good memories, thanks for bringing those up. ❤
I have a box of games just for my parents to try, because they have less rules but are complex in strategies. Snow time, social games, kings of Tokyo, ticket to ride, Machi Koro, stratego, sequence, boulderdash, and they LOVE wits and wagers.
I remember playing Rummikub, Lotería, Poker, and Canasta with my grandparents. We also loved to watch Who Wants to be a Millionaire together. Game nights were a ton of fun!
This is wonderful. I have a friend who plays games with his parents. My Mom was the board game player and she passed before I really got into the hobby. You've a real gift in your parents. It's cool how you honor them in your videos with them.
Wow! I'm impressed they knew 10 games each. My wife's grandmother is 100 years old but still sharp...she still drives and lives on her own etc... I have been contemplating bringing out a game for her to try when we go to visit but I like the heavy stuff and I don't have a good gauge on what older people might like so this list is helpful. I'll probably try Splendor. I was initially thinking about trying Cascadia. I think your parents might like that one as well.
This video was great, your parents are so charming! I am actually packing up some games for a trip now and I threw The Mind, Take 5 and Codenames into my bag as I was listening :)
My parents like Farkle and Spinners. Sometimes I can get them to play Sushi Go or Point Salad. I honestly think they'd like Qwirkle quite a bit, but my Dad is color blind so he'd probably struggle with it.
I learned there IS a color-blind friendly version of Qwirkle! They put interior shapes on the tiles that represent what color it is. That's really cool! I may have to get that for my folks! I think they'd like it!
Really enjoyed this video! Agree with your point towards the end of more accessible games these days I’ve had lots of success showing my parents and in-laws the following: Fun Facts, So Clover, Just One, Kites, and In Vino Morte
Are Korean people really into boardgames? It's pleasantly surprising how many of his older relatives partake frequently. That is definitely not the case in my American experience.
Its funny, my dad and I have almost the exact same relationship with splendor. I truly think its one of the best 2 player games I've ever found - so if you have the kind of person in your life who likes games with simple rules but deep strategy - I highly recommend it!
This is such a good list because I've been trying to find good games to play with my family. My dad can get a little too competitive which puts off my mom, so I'll try a few of these. Whenever I played The Mind, I always sucked at it though :( guess I'm like Jay LOL
Thankyou so muchh for makin this video, I love playin with my parents and they kinda have same taste like ur parents, maybe coz im asian too 😂 Dont know their top 10 but they really love Sequence, Downforce, Carcassonne, Splendor and Dungeon Mayhem
Lovely and wonderful video! Also, huge respect for this list. It is a lot of mechanically simpler games than what I prefer (crunchy Euro games), but sometimes "simple design" is the same as "genius design"
My parents; Rummikub, Golf, Codenames, 500, Whist, Azule, Herbaceous, Cribbage, Backgammon, and Bridge. I don’t know how to play Bridge… but card games are/were their thing.
If your dad likes Splendor, I'd reccomend Century: Spice Road! I enjoy both, but Century is about trading up spices with your cards to afford point cards, that are drafted from a market. Scratches a similar itch for me
my parents would not even have 10 games they've ever played, let alone a top10 list. checkers and chess is what i vaguely remember my dad or older brother teaching me. that's it🤷🏻♀️
Having the issue that some friends have a better or worse vocabulary and knowledge, I can highly suggest to try out Codenames Pictures rather than the normal one. The pictures make it not only more fun due to the images and offering more options due to the details, but it also offers everyone a possibility to find a word for each and every card they got. E.g. we played Codenames in German and we had a lot of issues with different kinds of fishes, as we don't have a lot of fishes around where I grew up - so the people rarely ever learned those words. Playing with codename pictures we could even mix up langauages.
I am so happy you made this list. I have been struggling to find board games with my parents because they have similar opinions to your parents. I will try to play some of these.
Okay but my parents also hate having to think while playing games and I really don't get it. I mean being creatively challenged by the mechanics is half the fun, non?
I'm going thru a rough time- two unexpected surgeries in two weeks- and this is a balm on my soul. thank you to you and your parents for sharing this lovely conversation with us.
This video made me feel like I also want to introduce some of my family members to board games, its so wholesome! I wonder what games would be good for that
scattergories is called "stadt, land, fluss" in german and is played a lot ... just never as a board game ... we just use pencil and paper why would anyone ever pay money for a few categories you can write down yourself? usually you even rotate categories and think of new ones to keep it entertaining ...
When I ask my wife about her favorite games, she says she likes them because she "doesn't have to think much." 🤨 Why don't you want to think and learn?
I liked this. We play a lot with my parents and the list is similar. My parents bought Splendor and play it every day 1v1 ^^ they didn't like The Mind. I'll try to show them Qwirkle
I wonder if SungWon’s parents would like Lacuna. I haven’t played it yet but I hear it’s a simple to learn but strategic game and it’s beautiful to boot
My parents top 5: 1. Just One 2. Dobble (Spot it) 3. Cortex Challenge (Braintopia) 4. La feria de las pulgas de Titirilquén (a chilean version of Pit) 5. La morada Maldita But my father add: 6. Combo Breaker (Dealt!) 7. Dixit 8. Patchwork No 9 or 10
Oh man, this is so cool!! Most of my board game history is from playing with my parents all the time growing up! We were obsessed with Sorry! and Scrabble, I remember having to push hard to add Jumanji into the mix. 😆 I should ask them what their favorites are, I'm about to visit them soon and maybe we'll pull something out!
My parents and I played board games since before I can remember. When I was super little they kept the more complex ones to themselves and their friends but once I hit double digits or so I was able to join in the more complex ones (and I won more often than my mom lol, tho not as often as my dad). Board games are a great way to bond, particularly in my paternal family. When my uncle passed away a few years back, my parents and I received his copy of the game “Vikings,” which my parents had played with him but I’d never had the opportunity to. It remains one of our favorites to this day and playing it helps me to feel closer to him, and when I win I can pretend he’s helping me from beyond the grave lol. It’s also just a really fun board game, would recommend even if it doesn’t have immense sentimental value for you. Suffice to say this video felt super homey and nostalgic just seeing someone talking with their parents about board games they enjoy playing together
"I gave my parents a week to think about board games. They each remembered 10. Here they are, listed in order of preference."
I lost my Dad in 2021 and this video really healed something in me. Thank you Sung Won and much love to your lovely parents
sorry for your loss...
Sorry for your loss. May his memory be a blessing to you.
Where'd you lose him
I lost my mother in 2021 for covid too and SungWon's videos helped me a lot during that time.

Your parents also have wonderful voices. They would make a great guest appearance in a voice acting gig
Huh. Now I want to see this haha.
I mean, where do you think he gets his great voice from?
"So your old mind is too slow" - glad to see parent teasing is universal 😆
@DontReadMyProfilePicture.57don’t Ligma balls
His dad's drawings of Sungwon and Anne Marie are perfect
That story about Jay playing The Mind killed me lmaoo, the pictures really added to it

I’m white, but his relationship with his parents seems really nice.
‘makes you think a little but not too much’ perfectly sums up what i want in a board game, thank you to your mom for boiling it down so succinctly 😍

I really appreciate how SungWon's mom thinks about the children playing these games. I think it's very sweet

Sungwon's Mom reaction after Sungwon's sarcasm 😂😂😂
This was so open, honest, and touching. Gaming families have some of the best gaming experiences and family memories. 12:53 CONCEPT 8!
lmao i'd totally watch your parents play some board games
This is wonderful. I have a friend who plays games with his parents. My Mom was the board game player and she passed before I really got into the hobby. You've a real gift in your parents. It's cool how you honor them in your videos with them.
Sungwon I think your parents are trying to tell you something about the games you are teaching them lol
"It's great for kids to learn"
Wow! I'm impressed they knew 10 games each. My wife's grandmother is 100 years old but still sharp...she still drives and lives on her own etc... Stegogories is Scattergories' cooler, dinosaur themed brother
Are Korean people really into boardgames? It's pleasantly surprising how many of his older relatives partake frequently. That is definitely not the case in my American experience.
Dude you gotta play Coup with your parents. Easy to setup and understand, really deep to play.
Your banter is absolutely adorable. Very wholesome video, thanks y'all
Its funny, my dad and I have almost the exact same relationship with splendor. I truly think its one of the best 2 player games I've ever found - so if you have the kind of person in your life who likes games with simple rules but deep strategy - I highly recommend it!
My mom is addicted to Farkle, we play it for hours every time I visit. It's good for older people who don't want to learn and retain a bunch of rules.
This is such a good list because I've been trying to find good games to play with my family. My dad can get a little too competitive which puts off my mom, so I'll try a few of these. Whenever I played The Mind, I always sucked at it though :( guess I'm like Jay LOL
This is so wholesome. So nice to hear you all talk about board games.
This was lovely! I loved hearing your parents' thoughts and stories about the games, and it gave me ideas of games to try with my parents!
Love the chill vibes of this video!
Fun video! Look up Splendor Duel if you haven't played it yet. Cool twist. I prefer it over splendor. Made by the same designer of 7 Wonders Duel.
Thankyou so muchh for makin this video, I love playin with my parents and they kinda have same taste like ur parents, maybe coz im asian too 😂
Dont know their top 10 but they really love Sequence, Downforce, Carcassonne, Splendor and Dungeon Mayhem
I love these videos. Wholesome. The animal crossing music. The laughter. Lol the confusion

Im suprised they didnt mention Mahjong, I thought its very popular in Korea, China, Japan... i tried it and i love it!

Damn, now every game of Codenames I’m gonna be looking for a way to say CONCEPT, 8.

Love the background music! What's the name of the song?
23:22 onward warmed my heart
14:14 I would add a slight disclaimer: I played with my freinds from Germany and I think it stressed them out a little haha
I have a copy of Kinfire from Kickstarter and super excited to play through it! Cant wait to hear you VA one of the characters!
My dad did the exact same thing in codenames, "baptism 8"
Any video of them actually playing together?
this video genuinely had me grinning ear to ear the entire time good stuff
Your parent's mic is suspiciously good
Board games are an amazing and important form of media in todays modern world
6:58 I see the parallel to Codenames and Taboo!

It’s called “Basta!”(stop) in Mexico. Also pencil/paper
We're very commercialized here in the US. We like our deluxe editions and Etsy upgrades over print n play copies.

This is reslly nice. Gives me more motivation to buy similar type of games for my parents. Simple, quick and with high replay value.

3. Cortex Challenge (Braintopia)
4. La feria de las pulgas de Titirilquén (a chilean version of Pit)
5. La morada Maldita
