DIY Garden Bed Edging anybody can do
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- Let's build a simple garden edging! Something that anybody can do and have great results, and at the same time time is different and unique from all the stone bed borders. Nothing more than some construction adhesive, a couple 2x4's, different length 4x4's, and some 5/4 deck boards for the top.

Hey everyone, so check this out. I showed my wife the video this morning and she was so excited. She looked at me and said you could do this "my love." She already went out side got the measurement and called Home Depot. I guess i have a project. Thank you again for the easy painless explanation. Next time i wont show her your other video's...
Lol👍🏼🙏🏼👊🏼
Your welcome and I guess I'm sorry lol thanks for watching
I would put those 2x4s on the inside, not the outside, so that it is easier to mow next to the bed...and use a weed whacker.
whats this title? anyone can edge just need to get bricked up
I edged and gooned to this comment
to anchor the lower 4x4 drill 1/2" holes through them and drive 1/2" rebar 12-16" long through and into the ground, I have used this method on railroad ties for raised beds and they have never moved, good vid THANX
Came here to say the same thing. Very quick and easy to do.
Just a tip...you should always make garden beds away from the walls of the home. Leave a foot or two.
Dirt against the wall above grade can cause structural problems due to moisture being held against the wall. Soil can also provide a super highway for insect infestations. The plants themselves become a transport system for insects as well as rodents, acting like a ladder to places they would have struggled to get to without the plant. Plant roots can disrupt foundation and actually break the structure, or the cladding. Mulch on the bed can exasperate moisture and insect problems. Finally, it makes it much easier to maintain both the home and the garden bed if the plants are not right against the home. Leave yourself room to access the house without having to tear your garden out or lop off branches that leave the plants looking mutilated.
Ronnie in VA I scrolled through a bunch of comments to finally get to your review. Yes did you see he already has a vertical crack in his foundation? I would not recommend anyone doing what this guy did.
Best comment here. I was wondering why is no one saying this.
But I will be following his instructions to make beds in the middle of my backyard cuz its very big
speaking of leaving a foot or two, putting your foot under a circular saw is a great way to do it.
@Tahoe408 thats not a foundation crack thats just the parging. Theres already 2-4 feet of dirt touching the foundation below grade.
Well I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend during this Quarantine weekend! Thanks My Brother!✌🏾
If you got kids, use the stakes... 👍🏻
Great video. Every step well explained. Appreciate the update on the end on how to make this edging even sturdier.
Thanks and you're welcome
@@JessedoesDIY I probably m
ditto, well explained
I loved this ideas . Hopefully, i can do this coming summer 2020. That’s my goal. Thanks for the tips.
Dude I love ur videos so much! Is this ur house ur doing all this to?! I been watching since a carpet install video lol and I’ve seen u do so much this place prolly looks amazing.
Thanks, appreciate it! Yup, it's my house, slowly making progress. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this. I am going to try this. You really scared me when you started cutting the wood on your foot.
Lol I cut it beside my foot, but yes
Excellent video. Clearly explained; nothing fancy (tool wise). Excellent speaking voice
Looks great. I do wonder why 800 people don't think it does? They need to get a life....
That was my first thought... my only guess would be they are safety gurus that didn't like how he was cutting those boards while supporting it with his foot! But I thought he did a great job... one of the better diy projects i've seen lately.
Thanks! I'm just used to doing that stuff at work, I don't give it another thought lol
I miss the public dislike button 😢
Haters gonna hate
Don’t forget to treat the ends where you have cut the timbers with weather treatment 👍👍👍
What is used for weather treatment?
Copper coat is a common one, but something called Cut-N-Seal is specifically made for this.
really great solution for a non-retaining wall bed. looks great and is very simple. should last a long time with some stain. Well done.
We always make a foot of gravel around the house. As deep as the foudation.
Very nice edging and good, clear, concise instructions. With spring just a couple of months away, this has given me some great ideas for my own garden. Nice job!
Thanks! Good luck
Yup
Everything looks great . I only have one suggestion. When you stack the (2) 4x4's drill through them with a 3/8" drill bit, put about (3) holes in each 8' section. Buy a 10' (or a couple) length of 3/8" rebar and cut it into 24" sections. Use a small mini sledge hammer and drive the 24" spike through both 4x4's into the ground. Now you will have a solid wall that won't move over time and you can finish with your top cap and not see the tops of the spike or the holes.
Absolutely
I was gonna say the same thing. It looks absolutely great.
Thanks
Yup did this on my last house, incorporated tiered sections as well, it's too easy and looks fantastic! The rebar adds tons of strength.
Nice!
Thank you for getting to the point from the get go. Well done!! Thank you!!
Thanks. Glad you like it
Thanks
Now that’s my kind of DIY project! Uncomplicated - few tools, fewer materials, and not a lot of time. Looks good, too! BTW, nice voice, good video pace, excellent editing, and no annoying background music. Thank you!
Thanks so much
I agree! I actually like this so much I plan on copying this for my garden! 💞
Fantastic! I'm glad you like it, good luck on yours!
I love watching video's that show me stuff that I can actually make, thankyou
No problem, thanks for watching! That's something I really focus on is simple, but nice looking projects most people should be able to accomplish and get a great look!
Great job! Super simple, but looks high end. I'll be stealing your idea and building these in my yard :)
If you need reinforcement, drill holes and pound in 12 to 18 inch pieces of rebar.
Nice job with your video. That's a really nice looking bed frame. Thanks for the insight.
I was looking for a quick and easy solution to replace my old borders. Looks like I found it and it looks good too.
Nice! Glad I could help. Good luck
Same here. We have old brick that's an eye sore and falling apart. Added this to the honey do list
Awesome.Good video.Result of hard work. Give your valuable comments to improve our channel thank you. Stay connected and stay blessed
LOVE THE LOOK! MY HUSBAND WILL NOT BE HAPPY AS I NOW HAVE ANOTHER PROJECT IN MIND! I KNOW HE WILL D0 A REALLY GOOD JOB AFTER HE WATCHES YOUR GREAT VIDEO! THANK YOU!
Thanks so much! Good luck
Lol these wives of ours I tell ya 😂
don't cut your foot like that
whos the idiots that disliked....seriously?? looks good
Back when lumber was cheap now I need to sell a kidney.
Unfortunately
Very beautiful! ❤ Thanks for explaining clearly and getting straight to the point! I'm going to try this myself. Wish me luck 😬
Thanks, glad you like it. Good luck on yours!
Looks really nice. You Tubing today, getting ready to build a 3 level deck and need some ideas resolved in my head.
Then I saw this pop up and also have a need on the side of my garage. I'm going to replicate this exactly it really looks fantastic. Thanks!
I just found you and you’re legitimately making some quality videos.
New sub at around 1500.
Looking forward to some more videos.
Thanks! I really appreciate it
I love this video. Design that I can easily follow
I was searching all over UA-cam for Garden Bed, this one is by far the best one. I will recommend this video to any of my friends and family.
Wow, thanks so much!
Exactly what I was looking for ! I think i will be driving some 1/4 inch by 2 ft rebar into the first row, to be on the safe side, since I will be going up 3 rows of 4x4's which should be approx 10 1/5 inches. Thanks for an awesome video !
Yeah, I definitely would. Thanks for watching, glad you like it!
I am also going to do 3 rows of 4x4’s
Thank you for the well laid out video. Love your format. Straight forward and easy to follow. Your border looks great. I cant wait to try it. Thanks for the end bit about further reinforcement too!
I would lay landscape fabric down before laying the first 4x4, then pull the fabric over the second 4x4 before capping it off with the deck boards.
Absolutely beautiful! I will definitely be doing this (some day) to the front of my house. Awesome work and thank you for the tutorial! 💖
My wife has been begging me to give her a flower bed this year. I love this concept and I have the upmost confidence to do it. Definitely subscribing to your page mate!
Well tell her after watching this video she can build it with no worries....
Looks fantastic!!!! I'm going to do this to my front flower beds only thing I'm going to add that you didn't is put plastic behind these borders and staple to the top but under the top bord. We have a massive rainy season. I'm going to use the plastic for moisture barrier.
Absolutely. Like I said in the video too, you may want to stake that first row of timber to the ground with spikes or rebar too, give it some footing into the ground
@@JessedoesDIY will do. Thanks for this vidoe. You did a good job!
That’s legit really good! Going to make a few as we have time off work because of this horrible virus.
Thanks! Stay safe
Dude, this is a seriously beautiful garden bed. Adding the cripple studs in front and attaching the top plate are great finishing touches. Couple of quick questions for you: (1) Why no use of wood preservative on those bare cut ends? If applied, would the preservative weaken the adhesion of the glue? (2) On that top plate, since the lumber will tend to cup as it weathers, why not stagger the screws so that a few screws lock it into the cripple studs? (staggering ` , ` , ` , ` ,) Also, seems like you get more even pressure across the board as the glue cures due to the attachment points being located on each edge of the top plate. These are by no means criticisms because your work is magnificent and your step-by-step explanation is both concise and understandable. Thanks so much for posting this!
Thanks! Sorry for the long reply, I wasn't notified. I just never had any preservative, but personally I've never really seen benefits to it unless you start getting into the later years (15-20) of it, long time after it's been up. but typically you would have replaced it again already just to have something new. But it wouldn't weaken anything. As for the top plate the glue will be holding it and bond them together permanently. The few screws I put in were just to hold it till the glue dried, but thats going to be the hold, not the screws. Once they are bonded, nothing will twist. It's all good, thanks for watching!
I used your formula and built four flower and veggie gardens. Added some drip irrigation and the project(s) turned out amazing. Thanks for the video and inspiration.
such a beautiful job. after watching this video i am thinking of doing it...i have another garden bed that runs perpendicular to the one that you just did. you turned 90 degree to the left. in my case i have to make a 90 degree turn to the right and then continue straight for another 15 feet. in my case it would be an inside corner not an outside corner like yours. my outside corner would be on the garden bed side. would it look odd?
Thanks! I don't think it would look odd, no. Good luck
Very neat, simple design. For a UK build where it's always wet, a continuous dpc under the bottom board, up the sides and pinned under the top board would add life to the boards. Nice job and easily understood tips 👌
Please tell me what dpc stands for. You may laugh about it but I'm a lady who does not do these kind of projects but I want to with the help of a helper
Very easy if the ground is flat. If it’s on a slope, it’s a whole different method
Very true
Nice work!
Permacon has great stone boarder stones. If you insist on wood, try using 6x6 pressure treated. Fast and looks good.
I didn't want stone. And I didn't want 6×6, I like the look of stacked 4×4 to give it more shadow lines. To each their own
Looks great, I'm gonna build a small bed now and if goes well I will do all around the house. Thanks for the great idea
The angled joint on top is referred to as a scarf joint. It's common in trim work
Brilliant job. Love the tip on doing 45 degree cuts on joining two boards up on a run, I'd have never thought of that, and I've not heard anybody mention that on other videos, so cheers 🖒
Hi, awesome design! What type of wood are you using? It doesn't look like pressure treated wood. Should we avoid using pressure treated? And would you ever consider painting it?
Thanks! It is all pressure treated. I'd only avoid it if you are going to plant food in the bed as opposed to just plants. The food can absorb some of the chemicals over time. I personally wouldn't paint it because the paint will never last and you'll need to reapply every few years. But if you go into it knowing you'll have to reapply, there is no reason you can't paint it
This is a great design I haven't seen before and which I reckon I can do myself! Top job, and a big thank you
I like this...if the 2x4 pieces in the front were actual boards staked into the ground about 1.5’ and concreted like a fence post, this could absolutely be a retaining wall
Thanks. It sure could
Great video! I'm gonna do this exact bed, love it! What were all the types of wood you used? All pressure treated right?
Thanks! All of it was Sienna Brown pressure treated pine. 4x4 posts, 1×6 deck boards, basic 2×4. Have fun
Thanks! Great stuff. Just subscribed
@@JessedoesDIY Hello, thank you for your video. Does the pressure treated wood safe for a vegetable garden and will it last few years. I don't know anything about wood and with all the moisture with the soil again it. I am just wondering. Thank you again...
Hi, you could use it and things would grow fine, however I wouldn't. Over time they can leech some of the pressure testing chemical into the soil and food bearing plants can absorb it. I'd use something naturally rot resistant like cedar. It will last quite a few years, almost as long as pressure treated but with no chemicals.
OMG, no gloves and using your foot, an accident waiting to happen, other than that a great idea, thanks for posting.
Lol I washed my hands after I was done but it was a hot hot day and I didn't want to wear gloves. And I was actually cutting a ways away from my foot, it's what we do at work when we don't have a table. But don't do it if you don't feel comfortable. Thanks for watching tho!
nice job...and how refreshing NO annoying music in the background, just the real noise of tools working and u doing the magic work....ahhhh...so freaking refreshing.
Thanks, appreciate it
Excellent video! Thank you for posting
Thank you very much very well explained without using over complicated audio and video tech.
this is basically an easy project but best part is, it looks very nice. congratulations on a job well done that adds beauty and value to your home. It would be wise to mention to use only an adhesive rated for outdoor use as not all are meant to be used outside
Thanks, thats what I was going for. Most good quality construction adhesive is outdoor rated, but yes, always double check
I'm in process of making this and it's turning out better than I thought! I didn't use any glue but it's not really needed I just added more screws, and those 2by4 pieces actually add strength because they hold the 4 by 4's together
Thank you so much for this design Jesse! I’ve been putting off building a bed like this at the front of our home for years. I searched and searched but didn’t find anything appealing. Thanks to your video, it got my brain working and came up with something that took only a couple days. It’s a little different than yours since my yard was on an incline, but without you taking the time to make this video, I’d still be lost… Thank you again, Andy in Kansas City 🤪👍
Damn, that looks pretty good.
I have never seen any wooden planks like that for sale in any DIY shop in my life, ever.
Good job I would just increase one or two level more depending on your soil
Thanks
I just lost my husband ..all I can do is say it’s beautiful..wish I had one 😊
Try to make one. He might look at u from the Sky and just be proud.
Kinga Cendrowska I am my oldest son is helping me 😊...I love flower garden ..I even planted 10 tulips and a Mr .POPPINS shrub on his grave ..
@@Mig-nr8hc I'm sorry for your loss but I'm sure he'd be happy to see and hear that. Stay strong
I’d help you if you need someone to make that for you
gregoryvanhalen awww ty..my son is going to help me ..
Hi there, we made this (almost) exact garden bed edging over the weekend. Had to replace the 2-4X4s stacked over each other with a 1-2X6 pine sleeper as the 4X4s that we get in Australia cost over $54. All in all, it looks great in the garden. Wish UA-cam allowed posting pictures in comments, would have loved to show it to you. Will make another of this one this week. Thanks again.
Awesome! I'm glad to hear that, at the end of the day I want to inspire people to do and try new things. I would love to see it. You can either upload it to Insatagram and tag me in it or email me directly in the description
This is really good.
Dude, this was so good. I plan to follow this for two side beds when I lay new grass turf. Thanks again dude. Amazing.
Thanks, glad you like it. That will look so good, keep me posted. Good luck
Gosh this is amazing. I’m going to try this this year. But be careful with the power tools bruh.. great video as usual
Thanks for your video I am not creative at all. But I’m gonna try this and see if I can impress my wife! Wish me luck
Lol nice. Thanks for watching, good luck
This is the exact idea, I was looking for

Awesome. Just what I was thinking of doing. What kind of wood did you use? Thank you for the video.
Calm Sea I would assume pressure treated pine
I edge my garden bed 24/7, currently on a 256 day streak
That is beautiful, thank you
Now this a great idea. I want to try this in my backyard along my fence but into the 4-5 individual areas where the fencing I'm responsible for is. Thanks for the great video.
You sound like David Schwimmer, Ross from Friends🥰
Crystal Farmer sorta, yeah 🥰
That looks really nice. Attractive wood finish with the vertical blocks really does add character to it.
Thanks! Appreciate it
Love this project but I would coat this with a weatherproof stain or something.
Thanks! You absolutely can, the wood is already pretreated tho, and you have to wait 2 months to stain treated wood after install
How is 4x4 connected or anchored to the ground? What's going to keep it from moving?
I'm astounded! You know what you're doing; you explain thoroughly and efficiently. The project is simple, attractive and structurally sound for its intended purpose. Good video & audio. Liked and subscribed. Thank you for your channel and for single-handedly restoring my faith in the DIY community at large. You sir, are a content-providing gem!
Wow, thanks so much, that means a lot. I really appreciate it. More coming down the pipe soon! Let me know if there is anything you need help with
FANTASTIC! This is exactly what I was hpoing to find and do for your backyard along a new fence I just built. Thanks!!
Thanks, I'm glad you like it! Good luck on yours and keep me posted, I'd love to see it when you're done, email me some pics!
@@JessedoesDIY I sure will...thanks again, your video was great and to the point!!
Very well done tutorial. Even the average women could make this! Thank you
I would have drove some reabar in to keep it still. Wouldn't even need glue. Use timberlock screws at joint and that thing can hold some weight against it.
What kind of wood would you use for this project? Looks really good though!
You could easily use cedar, that is very nice and is naturally rot and weather resistant. I used pressure treated pine, it's what I have available and is 1/3 the price of cedar. Once it dries out it looks like cedar, or as close as you can get. If you are growing food tho I would go with a natural wood like cedar, the chemicals in pressure treating can wick into the dirt over time and some plants don't like it
I think you shouldent put dirt next to concreet wall with out Any cover. Concreet probly gona suck alot of moisture from dirt
This is a great idea to follow, I was considering brick until I came across this gem, thanks for sharing!!
What kind of lumber did you use? Is that pine, cedar, etc?
Pressure treated pine. If you are going to grow food tho use cedar, the chemicals from pressure treating can seep into the food
I did something similar like this. I anchored my 4x4 with 12" rebar and it did the trick.
Awesome! Yeah that's exactly it
GLUE N SCREW, BABY! Watching this 9/25/2024 good video :)
Clear, concise, well done video and a great idea!
Half right! 1) Stay away from walls, 2)Need to put some stakes in the ground to secure the timber frame! ..... Free advice From A Structural Engineer
Am I trippin or is it just me, 3:34 is the 4×4 split or just a optical illusion? Contact broke the other day so my vision is thrown off a bit
4x4’s almost always are crazy warped, wouldn’t want to use them for anything accurate, unless they were very straight, but tbh for this ok, if you don’t mind them rotting in a few years.❤️
Is this treated wood for out of doors?
Nice clean functional simplicity!
Yup, pressure treated Sienna brown. Thanks!
Looks like my backyard. I had a small garden bed with cinder blocks but I want to expand it from one end to the other like you did. I have problems with standing water in that area. Do you think the cinder blocks will help keep the water out?
Great video! I did this exact garden bed 40'x4'. I reinforced the bottom 4x4 with spikes and I also cut the cosmetic 2x4's 16" long and spiked them into the ground 9" deep and then secured to the 4x4's. Thanks for the great tutorial!
Oh nice! Thanks for watching, glad I could help
having wood edgers looks nice but its a bad bad idea. The soil combined with the daily watering begins to rot the wood pretty quickly. Go with a nice brick design tht will last you many yeara.
Simple is all right, I did mine couple years ago. End up I had to do it again. As every one know that wood and water won't get along well in long term. Stone is expensive, use concert edging is the best .
Great idea, great instructions, maybe 3 courses of 4x4 would have been the ticket. Looks like a mini retaining wall. Forget those little spikes, use some scrap galvanized 1/2 or 3/4” water pipe cur with 45* points driven 2 ft plus down into the earth through all the courses. It wont tip over
Should have hammered in 24" rebar in first row of timbers into ground.
