Like yours, my front lawn was destroyed over this winter by leather jackets. I had good success treating the little fellas this spring using nematodes at 4x the autumn dose (and doing 2 applications, 1 before and one after renovation), when many told me I’d just have to wait until autumn to renovate. The lawn now looks better than ever - so glad I did it! Enjoying your vids, so thanks - nice to have an active UK based lawn care channel (those US boys are always cheating with environmentally harmful chemicals that have been banned in Europe for decades)
Thanks Thomas- thats exactly why i setup because I do enjoy watching their videos but some of the advice wasn't applicable to me and I couldn't get the products. Also found out its alot harder to get those results when you cant wipe out all the things you want to with pre emergent! This last week I've seen a number of LJs in the surface turning black, not sure if its the birds or the treatment but as long as they aren't in the lawn ill take it
Glad I watched this video. I have been deliberating as to using wood or metal edging. Metal is very expensive for the length I would need and seeing your video has confirmed wood is the better option. Thanks for such a detailed "how to".
Wow this is the EXACT idea that I have been thinking of for my front yard and thankfully you’re years ahead of me with this 💎! We have no border between the neighbor’s lawn and mine which creates an issue for me with mowing maintenance, combating invasive weeds,
Thanks for the idea! Have thinking for some time now about path way to my cabin that will be having similar edges so this was very helpful. Will set this up next spring! The idea are having this edges each side of the path way, small stones and then tiles above the small stone that can handle the ice.
Controlling amount of water on lawn during the times cranefly adults are laying eggs will reduce them in your lawn. Heavy watered lawns and areas where water collects are more prone for cranefly/leather jackets.
So have you just screwed the right side border in rather than install more posts on the side next to your drive? If I want to fully border garden do I add posts on opposite sides of the square/rectangle ? Rather than all four sides? I’ve cut my posts 3 the height of wood. But struggling to get post low enough in ground. Would I be better off cutting post to 2 times the height instead?
I moved into a property where the lawn was in a bad state so turned it over with a spade then rotavated it. I had a lot of leather jackets and had a Robin coming and eating them from the tray I collected them in. I still have some and now know a bit more about them.
Couldn't really find '4x1' and '4x2' as measurements at the usual DIY places. They tend to use Metrics. Closest I could find at Wickes was Pressure Treated Sawn Timber 22 x 100 for the boards, and Pressure Treated Kiln Dried Timber 45 x 95 for the pegs. They do a proper Gravel board at 22 x 150 but that just feels like I'll have to dig deeper to get them in!
Yes alot of places are metrics but 22x100 is very close to 4x1 and those few mm don't really matter. The key is treated timber and enough depth to cover the depth you need 👍
Use 2x2 (50mill x 50mill treated timber or some places will state 47mill (whatever guys). If they dont sell the pegs buy a length of watever size and cut down to bout 400 long. Preferably put a 2 way point on it but no biggie (your choice). The standard pegs are bout 2x2, 4 way pointed, 400 and 600 long. If you buy timber to cut down buy treated rough sawn timber
I'm trying to sort out something like that now... don't want the wooden ones, but I need something that will help to run a lawnmower on it? Maybe paving blocks? 🧐🤔
Got to say thanks for this video! Just used your recommendation on my lawn and it looks great at a budget price. Only thing I did differently was to attach pegs prior to planting the edging. I much prefer this option to the whole masonry job with bricks. Thanks
Great video. Could this method be used to create a border around some decking by maybe having the ground posts below surface level and then covering with gravel?
Thanks for your video , I was needing help to see how to do it , I start to doing on my back garden , just clean yet the area I want but I am getting there 😊👍💪
My lawn needs a decent wood edge but I need to increase height by approx 2 to 3 “ in parts plus I have a curve in my lawn/driveway. How can I create a decent mowing edge with a curve and wood?
Our front garden is joined to our neighbours, open plan, all grass, and I want to create a boundary, then use gravel. The problem I have, is that there is a drain that is on my boundary line. Any ideas how to overcome this problem? All ideas welcome! Thank you.
Great video, really going to help me out with a project I am about to start. I might be being dumb, but do the wooden “pegs” have a proper name? If so, tips on where to buy them from? Thanks
You need to use pressure treated timber which will extend the lifetime but overall yes all wood will rot eventually but the right type of wood should be good for many years to come
Hi mate love the content, I am planning to dress and overseed my lawn but I’m worried about the trampoline I have on the grass? Will the seed still germinate if I keep moving it around? Thanks in advance
Hi Lee, You've got a few issues to think about there. 1 is the area under the trampoline feet wont germinte 2 walking across the area isn't ideal and 3 the are underneath the trampoline wont get much light. If possible I'd tip it on the side off the grass, if not consider seeding your area in sections and when the seed has grown in one part move it to another.
Thanks John, I had thought about attracting birds to the garden but I have a cat, we do have alot pf birds around (some nesting near the house too) but have been reluctant to put feed and a bird bath out due to the cat

Would it be correct to now wait until late August to apply nematodes and when again should it be applied

Great results. I'm getting ready to make a small garden strip in front of a fence section on my side yard. Got some great tips from you.
I am an Android user and I have to say loved the commercial it was awesome

What about the boards you're using are they treated so as not to rot ??

👍 Robins are great in the garden

Using a hand roller is a great way to remove the and also Chaffer grubs 👍
Once again another great video, can't wait to watch the rest of the series 👍🏻
excellent video dude.
thanks for posting. 10/10
👍 cheers bud
Really helpful
Glad I found this, thank you!
So pretty
Thanks
Plain cardboard is superior to weed blanket. It's actually beneficial to the soil. Cover it with mulch.
If we are using landscape fabric, is laid on top of the gravel?
Thanks for sharing
The edge is wood, don’t think it will rot from all the water? Thanks for letting me know! Besides we love the content❤️
Its pressure treated timber so should be OK for a good while!
Garden Lawncare Guy In other words wood preservation... chemicals.... :-((( beware🙏🏻
You'll get five years max before it starts to rot.
Got to say thanks for this video! Just used your recommendation on my lawn and it looks great at a budget price. Only thing I did differently was to attach pegs prior to planting the edging. I much prefer this option to the whole masonry job with bricks. Thanks
Nice garren 👍
Great Vlog thanks for the information.
Great video. Could this method be used to create a border around some decking by maybe having the ground posts below surface level and then covering with gravel?
Thanks Paul, why not you can get creative! Anything in/on ground should be pressure treated
Thank you, I'll try it then 👍
The pegs should be lower than the top of edgeing anyway. And yes correct so they can be hidden by gravel.
Thanks for your video , I was needing help to see how to do it , I start to doing on my back garden , just clean yet the area I want but I am getting there 😊👍💪
Good luck 👍
Great ideas well done
Thanks 💚
@@GardenLawncareGuy wish I could make great content like you . If only
Looks great, much nicer than a lot of edging available (in my opinion of course)
Thanks gaz, I had the boards, auger and 2x4 lying around too so only cost was the stones
@@GardenLawncareGuy even better when it's almost free!
Ime a groundworker and yes timber edging does look nicer and easier on the eye, and at a fraction of the cost too
Really helpful. Thank you 🙂👍
Cheers 👍
My lawn needs a decent wood edge but I need to increase height by approx 2 to 3 “ in parts plus I have a curve in my lawn/driveway.
How can I create a decent mowing edge with a curve and wood?
if you dont need too much timber edging worth considering say 6x2 tanalised as for the extra cost will last longer
Hi Rob treated timber will be the best for this job for sure
And looks better and more ridged and wont break if you drive over it like many of my client's do instanly.
Hey buddy, can u also advise on gardens facing North and not much sun light or partly ...
Great work ! Today it’s a great day will try xx
Good luck!
Hello , do you treat the wood before installing ? I think moisture will destroy the wood by time.
It’s already pressure treated wood.
I've got some edging brackets from Amazon for my project rather than using wooden battens
good luck!
Lol
Before laying the pebbles should've put weed control membrane otherwise looks good
What about termites near house foundation?
Nice job!! How many years before the wood rots? Just wondering if I should use the cedar 2x4 or the treated 2x4s...I hope someone can post a response.
Pressure treated ground contact lumber
Another great video, another great idea. I'm going out to do this today!
Good luck mate 👍

Great job mate 👌
If your lawn is not level in places, do you just add top soil over the existing lawn and add new seed?
Yep make sure it's weed free topsoil, you can rake it flat
Correct or dig of high patches. Your choice
Where did you get your wood from and what sizes? I’m guessing you’re somewhere in or near Merseyside, so I’d be keen to know as I’m that way. Ta.
Has the wood rotted? And if so how do you go about replacing it
Brilliant thank you. Have subbed the channel. 👍👌💯
Cheers 👍
Does this type of edging work on a garden with a slight slope?
Yes!
Great videos pal. I'm looking to try something similar on my back lawn. Did you use any special timber or just pressure treated?
Thanks geeza, pressure treated 4x1 good luck!
Hi mate where did u get da egeing Plz and how much was it 👍
Was just wood from the store really, 3x1" and 4x2" for the posts
So what size timber is the edging? 3 x 2? Or larger
What if you have a curve in your lawn edge??
Good stuff mate I’m doing my own one at the moment but this looks really nice well done 👍
Cheers Jimmy, good luck with your project 👍
Loved this - I would some help with my garden, I just don’t know what to do with it 🙈
Thanks for watching good luck with your project
@@GardenLawncareGuy will you watch a video when I put it up 😬
Great video, really going to help me out with a project I am about to start. I might be being dumb, but do the wooden “pegs” have a proper name? If so, tips on where to buy them from? Thanks
Thanks, I just used wooden 2x4 cut down then cut them at an angle at the end
The proper pegs you want are called site pegs 2x2 normally 400 or 600 long and they are 4 way pointed.
Thank you
Good afternoon! Doesn't wood rot in the ground?
It's treated and its still here a few years down the line 👍
@@GardenLawncareGuy Have you impregnated the tree with some kind of agent?
Termites!! Hellooo!!
Don't have that issue where I'm from thankfully
No weed control textile?
why not put a french drain in there as well??
Edging looks great mate a lot neater, perfect weather in the UK recently for a new lawn also! 🤣
How long will the boards last before they rot and what do you do then?
Probably 10 years, then remove them and the edge will be fine from the lawn or replace them
@@GardenLawncareGuy can you recommend anything for curved edging. Thanks
Few metal based Edging companies like everedge or ideal gardens. Not used them but hear they are good
Have you put post crete in those post holes?
No just in the ground
Bang in straight until firm
Where did you get the wood for the lawn edger please?
Hi Melissa just a local diy shop, is 4" x 1" treated timber
I was wondering if the wood border will get rotten eventually due to water?
You need to use pressure treated timber which will extend the lifetime but overall yes all wood will rot eventually but the right type of wood should be good for many years to come
I’ll give this a go! When is the best time in the year to start a project like this?
Early autumn
Spring is OK but often very warm in April
beneficial nematodes
Good point 👍

Think it was 3x1
Phrasing!
Is that Tyson fury narrating haha
I can confirm I am not tyson fury
Is this Harry maguire?
Wouldn’t it rot
That wood will last 5 years at most in the moist ground..

Yhe most natural way to rid your lawn of leather jackets
Is to encoutage starlings there natural enemy

If you're gonna state a proffesional finish at least lower the pegs so there hidden.
Thats not me slated you pal 😉. Ime a pro groundworker thats all x
I'm just saying, I used a reciprocating saw and it worked wonders. I'm also a chick and my husband. I win.

5 out of 10 points, where is the membrane to prevent weeds growing through the gravel? It will look disgusting after couple of weeks...
I put membrane down, looks good still 1 year on
This is a vid on installing timber edging not on installing a gravel bed, so stop hating.
Less than £20 not 20£
Treat leatherjackets? They're part of nature serving a purpose man. People need to stop obsession about synthetic lawns.
jeez, sought your audio levels out man
Better to use metal edging, your untreated wooden one will rot in no time, especially in England.
