      My understanding is by level 6 you can do 2d10+5 damage per beam of eldritch blast... seems a *little* strong. Maybe changing it so you can’t buff the damage of things you change to necrotic damage could solve this.

      Dragon's make for excellent patrons period, if you ask me. My hexblade has a shadow dragon patron. One of the cool things about dragon patrons is that your typical adventurer isn't much different from a dragon. They go around collecting hoards of treasure so the pact can simply be that: to gather a hoard of treasure and not spend more from it than you add. The DM can easily create hooks that tie things together with your pact. That holy avenger needed by the Paladin to slay the BBEG? "A fine addition to my collection", thinks the shadow dragon as it is happy merely being in the presence of such treasure. Specifically for shadow dragon's, you can make it so that it also likes consuming essence of the shadowfell which can be said to reside within undead (I know it's the plane of negative energy, but there's at least an overlap between the two).
      Also, shadow pseudo-dragon familiars are cute as heck. Just homebrew them so that they can turn invisible and "become one with their own shadow".

    • @finderfinder4290

      pact of blade warlocks (which is what I assume you would pick up if you wanted a melee warlock build) can essentially give themselves proficiency with any weapon and armor. Your pact weapon you are automatically proficient with and can turn into any melee weapon, while the eldritch armor invocation allows you to become proficient with any armor you magically don. So you can have your bone armor and scythe with this subclass :D

    Looking at the difference between the Undead and the Undying I feel like any theme that falls into avoiding death is what you get for an Undying Warlock, where an Undead Warlock is very much tied to specifically undead creatures. So like, I could see an Undying Warlock being a psuedo Sorcerous Origin where a cosmic or technological disaster ended up putting you down that road. Undead pacts are very deliberate moves made by an ancient entity.

They have sentient thought but can't remember their past. And they don't register as "Undead" nor "living" but something in between. Would be a fun race to RP and delve into why this might happen. I did too wonder when i looked at the level 6th feature. when i noticed i figured many might be confused and one way i thought to clearly make it seem powerful still but less confusing. I figured maybe only rolling one more eldritch blast beam or 1 more dice per casting of the spell. so at level 1 it would be treated as it was lv 5 for amount of damage. Also like other abilities they limit the extra damage to only one of the attacks. One way i possible see fixing some confusing tactics some may have with the ability.

    So how would you describe the 2 different paths(undying an undead)? Imo looks like undying is in search of immortality either thru means of lichery(vecna), or thru ascension(gilgeam the demigod) tho point is by any means necessary good or bad. However undead looks to focus on the darker aspect as in an undead.

    • @thefracturedbutwhole5475
      @thefracturedbutwhole5475 4 роки тому +4

      Only in your form of dread, and it doesn't double the damage, you roll an extra damage dice, you could double it or you could do 1 extra damage, sorcerers can twin firebolt and then quicken firebolt, is that broken? are battlemasters broken? people see an extra damage dice and think it's automatically broken, it isn't, I think a spell like vampiric touch gets more out of grave touched and later on spirit projection, Vampiric touch deals damage and heals you for half the amount of damage, grave touched increases both and spirit projection makes it so you would heal the full amount of damage you did (heal half the damage dealt from vampiric touch and half from spirit projection.
      From what I can tell the Undead patron Warlock isn't about doing huge damage (although it has some good options) it is more about survivability and control.

      @bulldozer8950 3 роки тому

      @@thefracturedbutwhole5475 it sorta feels like it’s built to compete with the power of hexblade (which is okay but really hexblade should just get fixed). I don’t think it’s going to make the average persons build that much stronger, it’ll make them do some extra damage a couple times a day, but for a sorlock mix max it’s definitely gonna increase the damage. This brings a eldritch blast plus quickened eldritch blast at 6th level from (1d10+5)*2*2 (~42) to (2d10+5)*2*2 (64) which is definitely significantly stronger. This obviously only applies to people looking to break the game and maximize damage, but the sorlock isn’t exactly an obscure idea and is still a somewhat cool idea- even if you aren’t looking to min max your way to endless eldritch blasting. All that said, the best way to solve it IMO is just change it to say “this can only apply to one roll of the spell” or “once per turn you can roll one extra dice....” which should solve the issue ( still a pretty good pick but not nearly as op) without sacrificing too much for casual players. I think such a change would be hardly noticed by casual players, at least in how the game plays out, but would solve the min maxing problem. Anyhow, I get where your coming from, but the warlock is generally the component to the terribly strong blasters (due to eldritch blast) and currently the way it’s worked in it benefits those types of min maxed blasters the most

  • @fresh2924

    I love it. I'm a fan of everything undeath, so this easily pleases me. I do feel like it does cross paths with the undying in terms of pact origin, which is something we haven't seen, but I'm not against it. Anyway, here are my thoughts.
    for the spell list, although false life is very thematic, i doubt many people would choose it over armor of agathys. phantasmal steed is fantastic and i would take it 100% of the time despite its use being very situational for a warlock's limited casting.
    extra damage in dread form for spells like vampiric touch or enervation is *chef kiss*. the extra damage for an eldritch blaster is strong at lower levels, but ends up being about the same as hex blade's curse. though, you can use your form of dread twice as much initially, and 6 times as often by 17th level.
    I like the imagery of mortal husk, but I don't understand why your body would explode; it's not a very common undead ability. I think it would be more thematic to have your soul, being so suffused with necrotic energy, lash out before returning to your mortal husk and filling it with stolen life. having the soul or spirit do this would also lead nicely into the next ability, spirit projection. also, to make it less tailored towards melee warlocks, you could have the damage upon death target the thing that took you down.
    can you use spirit projection continuously? I'm imagining a warlock who keeps their body in a lead-lined adamantine coffin that they drag around and only interact in ghost form. please let this be true.

    Grave Touched makes this subclass better than Hexblade for Eldritch Blasting, but it's harder to dip for a Sorlock so you really need to go full Warlock in a campaign where you can get the Illusionist's Bracers to maximize it. Math below:
    At Lvl 6: Attack Bonus (8), Target AC (15). Activate Form of Dread just before starting combat. Turn 1: Hex, Eldritch Blast 2x (Avg DPR = 28.75 / 42 with Elven Accuracy Advantage). Turn 2: Using Illusionist's Bracers for double Cantrips (Avg DPR = 57.5 / 84.1 with Adv)
    At Lvl 11: Attack Bonus (9), Target AC (17). Same setup with Eldritch Blast 3x. Turn 1 (43.1 / 63.1). Turn 2 (86.25 / 126.25).
    At Lvl 17: Attack Bonus (11), Target AC (19). Same setup with Eldritch Blast 4x. Turn 1 (53.6 / 82.9). Turn 2 (107.2 / 165.8)

      My understanding is that the Undying focuses on "undeath as immortality", which is why its features deal with being very difficult to kill and why it's associated with liches specifically. The Undead is applicable to undead more generally, with features involving fear amd necrotic damage.

      While there is overlap the Undying focuses on the extension of life when it comes to necromancy while Undead focuses on pure negative energy. An Undying warlock might make a deal with a powerful necromancer to apply runes to extend their life but might not have the raw necrotic energy to actually make you into an Undead warlock. Meanwhile an Undead warlock might make a deal with a Nightwalker to become saturated with necrotic energy like a sponge, but a nightwalker doesn’t have the abilities nor the want to necessarily extend and safeguard another being’s life.

      @@r.0.b.429 The only case I can think of of an Undying patron that wouldnt qualify as an undead is one prologing their life through the clone spell... and that is a very impractical and expensive approach (Not discarding it, just pointing how unlikely it becomes after a while)... So I would say that basically most of the undying patrons are contained within the undead patrons. Again, i dont disagree that they are mechanically and thematically diferent, just that I dont see much difference between them from a patron's lore point of view.

    Fear effects don’t give you advantage on attack rolls against the frightened target so there is no synergy with elven accuracy. You should use a greataxe not a great sword so that at 6th level you do 4d12+8 (34) with thirsting blade or 4d12+28 (54) with GWM. It basically makes your great axe always crit if it hits. Compare to Eldrich blast on a normal warlock 2d10 +8 (19) and you see that it does around twice the damage without a feat and substantially more than that with one.
    Under perfect conditions you could be dealing upwards of 6d12+42 (81) if you hit all three attacks and drop at least one target allowing you to use your bonus action. This seems a little stronger than the other pacts.

    On whther the additional necrotic damage is OP for Eldritch Blast, at 17th the Warlock could do 100 damage max to a target or 25 to 4 (crits are an option). At 17th, a Wizard can Fireball ~ 16x a day (with Arcane Recovery), which does guarunteed damage and can melt large swathes of enemies. 16 Fireballs at various levels will probs be far more than enough for an average day's combat, so I don't feel it's OP. Personally I'm not feeling this one, there are invocations that just give you False Life and Speak with Dead, not to mention that a lot of things are resistant or immune to necrotic damage. Assuming when you 'go ghost' you're not just going somewhere on your own and are instead buffing yourself for a dungeon, surely that means someone else in your party has to carry your limp body around or just hide it in a crate outside where someone could just find it.The whole exploding when you drop to 0 thing could also be potentially really harmful to your friends if, as a bladelock, you're close to the frontlines.
    I really hope I'm looking at this the wrong way, I was very disappointed in the Undying warlock and I just wanna play a Warlock who's trying to become a lich with necromantic powers.

      While your complaints are valid, i think there is a bit of an issue woth the wording. For the "going ghost" ability, you can teleport your body to you when it ends, so you can hide it outside the dungeon or at an inn or something, and call ot to you when the ability is done. The necrotoc damage is optional, and you can choose to do the normal damage for the attack if something resists. However, i do agree with the redundant options on the expanded spell list and the husk ability hurting allies. I think this subclass is in a pretty rough draft right now (with those over and underpowered options and the redundant spells), but to me, it definitely has potential
