    I'm currently the DM in a campaign with a Drakewarden player, and I can't wait to see how this goes. After reading what others have stated, I still think the drake should definitely start out small, grow to medium size at 7th or 11th level with breath weapon, and then grow to large at 15th. I think mount options in late-game are great. What an amazing capstone!

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 3 роки тому +1

      The problem with having them become Medium halfway through is that it then makes Small PCs the objectively superior choice at character creation, because they can get their mount faster. It wouldn't be fair to everyone who wants to play a race other than halfling, gnome, goblin, kobold, etc. Jumping from Small to Large is clunky, yes, but it means every PC can get their mount at the same time.

    • @SybilantSquid
      @SybilantSquid 3 роки тому +12

      @@Bluecho4 Honestly, I'd rather the drake have a reasonable size progression. Consider that small races are already king for turning companions into mounts. Look at the Beast Master Ranger and the Battlesmith Artificer. Both can get medium-sized companion options at level 3 and there is nothing in the rules that prevents you from riding them as mounts, and medium sized creatures cannot use them as mounts under normal circumstances.
      The drakewarden would be another instance where small size is nice for an early bonus, but in this case, at higher levels anyone can ride it, so if you're patient, the early benefits of being a small race don't matter as much in the long run.

    • @notorious.scoundrel
      @notorious.scoundrel 3 роки тому +1

      I agree that growing to medium at 7th level is more natural, since it starts small at 3rd level and grows to large at 15th. Alternatively, a drake is a medium creature, so starting medium doesn't really make much difference other than the small races (damn them smallfolk) being able to mount them at 3rd level

    • @theeshyguy
      @theeshyguy 3 роки тому +1

      @@Bluecho4 Isn’t that just a benefit of playing a small character in general though? Like, for a beast master, small rangers can ride their companions while medium rangers don’t even get that choice at all. I don’t think that’s too unfair.

    • @DaDunge
      @DaDunge 3 роки тому +1

      I'm going to go further in my feedback I'll suggest the drake becomes medium at 7th level, large at 11th level and huge at 15th level. Because seriously at 11th level full casters can cast fly pretty much at will anyway so having a single flying mount that can carry one person at that level is acceptable. Flying at 7th level as a small character is fine at 7th level full casters can cast polymorph. It's a single spell, while this is the main class feature of a subclass.
      And being huge and able to carry multiple characters at 15th level is fine because at that point you are entering the endgame.
      To nerf them back down you should chose your draconic essence once when you first get the ability and then have to stick to it.
      Also maybe it should always be there not just proficiency level number of hours. Are they seriously concerned that a ranger subclass may end up overpowered? Well then it may cancel out with the main class being under powered and make it actually playable.

    Since it doesn't specify how its summoned, you can flavour that as it just being off hunting etc, or as I prefer, summoning it opens a wyrmhole... I'll see myself out

    • @MissLeafi
      @MissLeafi 3 роки тому +6

      Agreed. That's what I'm going to do. The only issue I have here is that the whole summoning thing takes away from the danger of the companion getting seriously hurt or killed. I much prefer the revive mechanic of the new Beastmaster companions for that reason.

      I'm using mine as scales on my arm that disappear when it's summoned and reappear when it's not. The DM agreed that while Lapis (my drake) isn't summoned, we share a telepathic connection that breaks when she is summoned and we have to use draconic again.
      It's not a huge stray from RaW but it gives me a really nice angle to explore - the character's mind gets a bit messed up by constantly feeling the drake's impulses and he ends up a bit socially awkward since most of his talking is inside his own head.
      It helps that in the backstory they started off doing a drake-and-flute based choreography (entertainer background) which makes for the perfect mix of awkward yet flamboyant.

    Aarakocra and Winged Tieflings have it at level 1. Protector Aasimar can have a minute of it per day at level 3. Flight can be granted through uncommon items, and while it requires concentration, Fly is a 3rd level spell-half of the fullcasters could have had it two levels ago. Druids of all subclasses and all races get up to 8 hours of flight per short rest at 8. Letting halflings, gnomes, goblins, and kobolds of a specific subclass have mounted flight at 7th level isn't that bad.

    As for combat on a mount that takes it's action after you, all the ranger has to do is -ready an action-. Once the drake moves into range it uses the action. Your drake can imbue your attack or can make its attacks. Then once in melee range atop the drake, you can attack normally on your turn.

    Possible improvements:
    - Medium size at 3rd or 7th level (if it's to represent a growth spurt, there definitely has to be a middle point).
    - No limit to how long or how many times the drake can move summoned (the ranger is already nerfed WAY MORE than enough), it also doesn't make sense to only have it during combat if the idea is to bond with the drake, by doing this the drake is nothing more than a weapon or tool to be used.

    When I was young I found an injured drake hidden in the woods, at first I was scared but after seeing the pain it was in I took pity on it. I began bringing it food and water on a daily basis. I would use a large branch to pass it the offerings from a distance. As each day passed I would pick up the courage to get a few feet closer, until eventually and cautiously I began sitting next to it. Each day I would sit with it, talk to it , I even gave it a name. The drake would lay there, its head on the ground, just looking at me through an half opened eye but unfortunately instead of getting better it's condition slowly declined.
    Then one day I arrived food in hand to find my friend had passed. Placed in the spot where I'd usually sit and speak to it was one its claws. The drake had bitten it off and left it there. I stood there for a while and wept. Before leaving I crouched over and picked up the claw, I felt a sharp burning sensation in the palm of my hand before I quickly dropped it again. My palm was badly burned but from that day forth the spirit of my drake friend in the woods has always been with me.

I came agos the dragonheirs, that were the last remnant of the slaves to the Og dragons, who cared for the dragon eggs and young. And have the ability to control and connect with dragons by touch and voice. My story has my character be a descendant of one of the oldest houses of these dragonheirs, and eventually makes a pact with a dragon. The other idea was to make that pact with a dragonborn ally, where each character gets benefits from the other or gain advantages etc. But this is even awesome to move towards a dragon rider

    Recommendation for drake warden, make it change to a medium creature at level 7, and allow it to grow wings & increase the scaling of the imbued attacks at 11, breath weapon size large at 15th level. I would imagine magical effluences are the last thing to mature in a magical creature so the breath weapon is the coup de grace. That way people can use it as a ground mount at least.
    Dragonborns supposedly reach mental maturity at 14 human years, and at 10 years of age they have their general full physical build minus a few features like their muscle maturity and horn development. Dragons themselves apparently develop physically even quicker.

    Unless I'm mistaken on the order in which you can break up a turn, I would still think since movement isn't an Action (except for the Dash Action of course), you should be able to ride the companion (whether it be the Drake, the Beast companion, or the Steel Defender, as long as the Size is appropriate) and simply have them use their Action after yours as normal.
    i.e. You're mounted on a companion. You have them move Xft, take your Action, and they then take their action.
    Maybe if that's not possible, you could hold your Action for after the companion's movement, but I think that may eat up your Reaction.

    Also, the capstone ability should remove the time limit. At that point youre high enough of a level that it's reasonable to be that powerful, and also serves as a perfect completion of your bond with the Drake. That mastering the Drakewarden Conclave means your Drake will always be with you.

    Im currently playing a Drake Warden and i have only a few changes i would personally make. On bond of fang an scale the drake should grow to a Medium sized creature, this is to show the Drake actually growing up with you.(an ofcourse letting small creatures ride it.). Lastly the Drake should get ability score improvements when you do. So the drake gets a little bit stronger, or you can dump all the points into Charisma so your dragon is scarier or cuter to manipulate people. Or perhaps you want it to be able to sniff out a blood trail of a ogre then increase its wisdom, its so every drake warden's drake is different, an not a carbon copy. yes i know the elemental change thing does help, and your drake can look anyway you want. My main point is the ability scores are a part of the character an influence it greatly. So maybe a smarter or more Dexterity based drake would be fun an more unique.

    If a drake companion goes to negative hit points and disappears back into the aether or wherever, is it dead forever in your home campaign plane. And if not, being able to summon it again the following day, good as new, just seems to make it another piece of canon fodder (sorry for the post-medieval metaphor, but not really) rather than a relationship between mutually devoted companions. With an intelligence of 8, it is not the sharpest tool in the shed, but neither is it an idiot. Eventually it will figure out that it has a tricksy master that is just using it and that the bond was really just a one way affair. The Drakewarden should at least have the decency to send a seriously wounded drake back to the aether or wherever first to recover; but then I tend toward the CG-NG range on the alignment wheel.

    I've had a campaign idea rattling around in my head for a while, where a bunch of neighboring states go to war with each other. And those states - I call them the Metallic Principalities - have metallic dragon patrons. So the campaign would be a war campaign where all the sides have dragons. It would be a great game to have the players run PCs that go into that theme. Dragonborn and Kobolds. Cults that worship dragons, and imbibe dragon blood to become Draconic Sorcerers. Monasteries where Monks train under ancient dragons to alter their Ki towards draconic might.
    And, in this case, Drakewarden Rangers, that bond themselves to newly hatched drake eggs. Using them as companions and, eventually, as mounts. It would go along well with the idea that normal drakes and wyverns would act as mounts for high ranking warriors within the military hierarchies of these states. Including the Princes themselves, who are raised alongside true dragon hatchlings from birth, so they become these dragon knights that are bonded as brothers. I wouldn't let a PC do that (or at least they'd need to be separated from their true dragon mount until high levels). But a Drakewarden Ranger would be a very serviceable substitute.
