    We are a Dungeons and Dragons documentary. We interview the creators of D&D and people in the DnD community. Every week we post new videos on how D&D gets made and tips and tricks on being a player and a Dungeon Master. This show is made possible by the amazing Dungeons & Dragons community and by our subscribers on Patreon.
    Dungeons & Dragons Expands Beyond the Gothic Horror in Curse of Strahdwith Van Richten’s Guide to RavenloftD&D Brings Multiple Horror Genres to (Un)Life Including Slasher Horror, Macabre Fairy Tale, and Zombie Apocalypse.
    One of the most popular adventures published by D&D in the last few yearswas Curse of Strahd which begins when characters are pulled by creeping mists in to a land called Barovia. But Strahd’s domain is just one of the many Domains of Dread that make up the horror-themed setting of Ravenloft. Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenlof trefreshes the setting by giving Dungeon Masters descriptions of more than 30 Domains of Dread beyond Barovia as well as the tools to create their own horrific stories, including details on each domain’s Darklord, a ready-to-play adventure, new monsters, lineages and sub-classes. Be afraid for Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft to pull D&D fans into the Mists on May 18. “I’m a huge fan of all things horror, so it was an absolute thrill to frame this book around bringing frightening elements like mummy lords, cosmic terrors, and urban legends to more D&D tables,” said Wes Schneider, senior game designer and lead designer of Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft. “Working with exciting new voices in horror and visual artists like D&D concept artist Shawn Wood was essential to make sure we’re updating the aesthetic for today’s fans while staying true to the roots of Ravenloft.”The correspondence of Rudolph Van Richten and other heroes of Ravenloft, like Ezmerelda d’Avenir and the Weathermay-Foxgrove Twins, introduce a new generation of monster hunters to the Lands of the Mists. Some of the Domains of Dread might feel eerily familiar to fans such as Lamordia, which explores the horror of experimentation on creating undead beings from deceased body parts by Dr. Viktra Mordenheim. Other horrors include the surreal, fairytale masquerades of Dementlieu; treachery in the war-torn rain forests of Kalakeri; and the endless zombie hordes of Falkovnia. Van Richten’s Guide includes rules and advice for DMs to create custom domains and Darklordsby portraying established horror tropes or whatever special new blend of terror they can imagine. Players can create more terrifying characters with Dark Gifts that provide roleplaying ties tothe Domains of Dread by bestowing benefits that may have a deadly cost. With Van Richten’s Guide, players can also roll upa dhampir who’s been created by a vampire, a hexblood descended from a hag, or a reborn who’s been brought back from the dead.Two new subclasses further flesh out the options with the College of Spirits for bards and the Undead pact for warlocks, as well as new backgrounds to explore and trinkets to collect. Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft features a cover by Anna Podedworna available everywhere and an alternate cover by Scott M. Fischer only available through game stores.The mists beckon on May 18, 2021!

    I just gotta say, I'm glad Todd has decided to continue making videos on D&D stuff on his own channel, I find it more easily to stay engaged when he talks about things than the new cast of DDB

    • @markgoodwin5918
      @markgoodwin5918 3 роки тому +6

      That's because the new DDB spent a third to half their time in each video buttering each other up. And another quarter trying to figure out what they are going to talk about, in the video itself. I couldn't handle the 20 minute videos, with only about 5 minutes of actual content anymore. There's promise of maybe some actual substance there, but it's easy to tell theirs some organization issues.
      Todd has this down. He's got a great rhythm, he allows his fanboy-side to gush, which enhances his (and our) enjoyment, while staying on track and covering the subject itself. Todd is that personable, part of the community, trusted old school local business. The local store know one remembers its actual name, it's just, "Go check with Todd, He'll get ya setup, no worries."
      The new DDB crew are the really enthusiastic kids that opened the latest cannabis shop in the area. Lots of vim and vigor, just not really sure what in Hell they're actually doing. (Although for that analogy to be correct, it's more like they bought an original shop with an established clientele, but now there's a baker's dozen other similar stores... that are running smoothly.)
      It's experience and learning curve. And mostly interim. They still have not found a final replacement for Todd. It's been how long? There's gotta be some snags or disconnects happening further up in the company. Not having a replacement ready to go within a month was a mistake. Not correcting that mistake for so long has now become an error. Their views/interactions are dropping. If they get a capable replacement in place in the next month, they'll still reclaim lost viewers. But, much longer than that, they'll really have to fight to bring the numbers back up.

      Todd no longer is beholden to a particular D&D platform, so can speak to general ideals a lot more than before.

    - Lich
    - Demilich

    - Mummy Lord
    - Particularly powerful Revenant
    - Death Knight

    I have this very oddball concept...it starts out as an Undead Warlock, who makes their pact with a lich, in the hopes of "earning" their way into the secret of immortality...
    ...and then they multiclass into a Glamour Bard, in the hopes of achieving eternal beauty.
    All the benefits of being a lich...without the rotting flesh.
    Basically, they want their immortality cake...and to eat it, too.
    The only give away would be their eyes; when they use their "Form of Dread", their eyes will burn with a cold blue luminescence.
    Naturally...this lich would be annoyed that their "pawn" is trying to cheat their way out of the setbacks THEY themselves had to deal with.

Another thing is I would change spell casting to be a choose the current limited spell slots or a lot of lower level slots and no spells past 5th

    It is one of the coolest warlocks in flavor, but sadly it sounds like they didnt fix any of the problems i had with the UA. the extra damage was fine, its comparable to a hexblade's curse and it didnt need nerfed. the exploding is fine but 1d4 short rest abilities are wonky, and projecting your spirit causes too many ruling questions (what happens if the spirit and body are both in an AOE, does your spirit have the same AC as you if your AC comes from armor, can you use magical items your body had, etc.)

    • @thefracturedbutwhole5475
      @thefracturedbutwhole5475 2 роки тому +1

      Sadly, the 'spirit projection' feature requires concentration, so spells that require concentration (like vampiric touch) won't work, inflict wounds does though, and certain cantrips can pretty much duplicate vampiric touch (maybe even be a little better), Chill touch at 14th Ievel does 3D8 necrotic damage, it's necromancy (there is a thing about spirit projection and necromancy spells), you can add an extra damage die (3D8 is now 4D8) it has 120ft range and they can't regain HP for a round, and you heal for half damage dealt, vampiric touch is concentration, has a range of touch, and dies 5D6 at 5th level, and you heal for half damage dealt.
      Vampiric is still good for all the times you aren't using spirit projection though, you can add an extra damage die from the 'grave touched' trait, effectively using a 5th level spell slot to cast it at 6th level with all the benefits, you're doing 6D6 necrotic instead of 5D6 which means you heal just that little bit more.
      you definitely have to be smart when picking spells for your undead warlock, you need to think ahead with your spell choices without crippling yourself in the immediate.

    I would ask my DM to replace false life with another option, as it is a superfluous spell. With limited spell selections, if given the choice between false life and armor of agathys - and especially with the false life invocation also available - false life on the spell list is just purely dumb.

    • @thefracturedbutwhole5475
      @thefracturedbutwhole5475 2 роки тому

      The false life invocation sucks, you cast it at base level and I don't think you even learn the spell proper, False life isn't bad, Armor of Agathys is better (you can learn false life with the 'shadow touched' feat and save a learned spell for something else), but even Armor of Agathys isn't as good for an undead warlock as it is for others, the damage is good but the temp HP is pointless really since you get a decent amount of temp HP from Form of Dread, if you get into melee a lot 'Spirit Shroud' is better I think.

    As it stood, the UA version was not very impressive and had some significant issues with it. Too many for me to mention in a short comment post.
