"Was Rizal really against the revolution?" This was the part of the video that struck me the most, as it was something I had just learned. It challenged my previous understanding of Rizal’s stance on the Philippine Revolution. Some of Rizal’s beliefs and actions show that history isn't always black and white, and this new knowledge encourages me to dig deeper into our nation's past. Rizal revealed his human side-handa siyang mamatay, but he was still trying his best to live, writing against the revolution while imprisoned. Rizal was ambivalent, as violence was his last resort in overthrowing tyranny. He believed that the people needed to be prepared and ready before resorting to such measures.
Indeed, by learning more about our national heroes and the context of their actions, we gain a better understanding of their struggles and contributions to the betterment of our nation.

It really astonishes me how Rizal's passion for the FIlipino is evident not only in his writing but his actions. The recognition he receives up to day is well-deserved. I hope lang na the Filipino can see what he sees when it comes to the nation's potential in spite of the corrupt political system. I would recommend a documentary like this to others not only to learn more about Rizal and his backstory but to gain an insight to the pride of being Filipino.

Rizal and our other heroes are heroes because they gave us hope and they gave us the idea that Filipinos are just as talented and capable as any other person, that Filipinos deserve to be treated equally and that no one is higher than anyone. They taught us that as Filipinos, we have to be united, to be one as a nation, for us to truly progress

It's important to note that as much as Rizal was a hero, he was also human. Through his works, Rizal was able to inspire others to fight for our country, which couldn't have been easy having no status as a regular Filipino. His story is important to remember, as it shows how ordinary people have the capability to do extraordinary things.

This lecture is truly informative. To this very day, we still learn new things about the life of Rizal and each lesson evokes truth about the society and the nation.

Just like our lessons in class, this was a very interesting talk that deeply talks about the life, struggles, and intentions of Rizal. The part of the talk I was struck by the most was how education was one of the most important legacies of Rizal. I especially liked the discussion of Rizal on Dapitan because it was there that he was able to embody and manifest his concept of a nation. He was indeed a forward thinker and a progressive educator with the projects he started.

Jose Rizal is not just a hero who died because of fighting for the freedom of Filipino. He also gave hope to his country that we could fight for what is right in the means of reform, which he recommended. Jose Rizal doesn't want violence, which is why he helped his fellow Filipinos open their eyes to his works and essays.

we truly have always had our own nation. As someone who's always been interested in fashion, my favorite part is how Rizal proves in the drawings that we have our own culture and we can even do business with people in China just by showing what we wear. Having our own traditional clothes show that we are culture is so valuable and that we deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.

It is very important to commemorate our national heroes as their selfless acts done to defend and show love for our country should inspire us and ignite a fervor to do the same, though not in the same gruesome manner, but the need to make sacrifices and doing actions that better the state of our nation should be put into regular practice.

Through his life and works, he was able to open the eyes of the Filipino people on what is the situation is and how the nation should be.

Hi Sir Chua!

I really appreciate that Sir Chua showed how much faith Rizal has for the Filipino people. We had a rich culture that was sadly wiped out by the Spaniards. We were well-off in our trading with other countries like China. We lived relatively harmoniously as one nation. And yet, even if we were occupied and ruled by foreign powers, he believed that we still had our own power. This is why he valued education so much and emphasized it in his time in Dapitan. In opening our eyes to the reality of the situation, we had the motivation and will to regain our identity and status as a unified nation.

I like how this lecture addressed a lot of aspects in Rizal’s life. Before watching this video, I also questioned why Rizal is for hispanization if he is considered a national hero of the Philippines. Rizal wanted a gradual process of gaining independence and wanted to avoid violence.

I appreciate how this discussion was able to tackle a lot of details regarding Rizal's life and legacy, especially since there were a lot of information that was not discussed during history classes in elementary and high school. Despite not engaging directly in the front lines and keeping himself out of the physical battlefield, Rizal was able to prove the saying that "the pen is mightier than the sword" through his literary efforts and successfully informed our countrymen of what was truly happening during the Spanish Era.

Thank you for this informative lecture, Mr. Chua! I was surprised that Dr. Jose Rizal was not technically our official national hero because we do not have any republic acts, laws, or decrees that declare such facts. I believe we Filipino chose Rizal as our national hero because he represents the youth, his admiration for the country is immeasurable, and he ignited the hearts of the people to revolutionize (he was like the fire to burn the oppressive schemes during that time). His writings and novels were also substantive efforts to show his bravery towards the Spaniards, despite his challenges and incapacitated opportunities during his life.

What I appreciate the most in this video is how it gives out many truths about Rizal that a lot of history books, videos, and even historians themselves do not usually let the public know about. Rizal is did not create his famous literary works with a revolution in mind, instead what he wanted was to make sure that the real situation of the Philippines at the time was known. This is seen as a let down for some because they always believed in the story of Rizal always looking forward to revolution and having it as an outcome of all of his sacrifices and risks. Although that is the case, which I personally understand where the disappointment of some comes from, there should still somehow be an acknowledgement for his many efforts of wanting to help people be properly educated and to spread out the oppressive reality of what Filipinos at that time were going through. It is also known that many people do not see Rizal as credible to be considered as a hero due to the fact that he was not known to be physically fighting in war against the country's colonizers. I personally do not agree with that argument because it invalidates the significance that different art forms have. Only recognizing physical fights as a credential for heroism degrades the power that art has in social change, in this case it would be literature wherein some do not see the impact that literary works can give to people. It is quite saddening to know that someone is seen as not good enough just because of not being involved in war because it shows how people see heroism in a one-sided concept, with no other set of qualifications except for being in the front row of shoot outs.

  • @ryantan9948

In my opinion, I would agree with Dr. Rizal that there should be a prerequisite to having a revolution, may that be education, weapons, unity, and others. Although the argument may say that the people knew what they wanted to achieve, I think it is really important to strategise every single action with the knowledge and expertise given by the fruit of education. In the things that we do, the heart and mind both need to be in the right places or else it is easily corrupted by selfishness and greed.

It is cool to know that when Jose Rizal wrote his novels he did not write it with an intention to start revolts. Instead it was because he wanted to show people the current sad situation of the Philippines at that time. But just because Jose Rizal did not physically fight the colonizers doesn't invalidate his existence as a hero. Since he tried his best to help his fellow countrymen in his own way.

Through the help of social medias such as UA-cam, filipinos especially the students are given the opportunity to learn about the life of our heroes such as how Rizal became our hero, his actions, beliefs and books that helped us understand our past.
