I actually love Isle of Dogs; I just happen to love cats more.
Full disclosure: this video was made back in August (hence the difference in my sub count) and kept being pushed back for a variety of life reasons. Every time I delayed its released, I wondered if it was still worth posting it at all. I eventually decided to do it anyway, but please be aware that if you talk about this video, you're talking to August-me, and I feel like I've aged 10 years per month in 2020.
I love you all. Keep on being cool.

There's the mythological idea that being mean to cats might make the cat into a monster. Also that a very old cat will split its tail and use magic.
I think animist societies might have better relations with cats in general due to spirits being somewhat arbitrary and not thinking in the same way as people.
Maybe monotheistic societies have problems with cats due to their unpredictability and freedom.

Idk if It's the actual reason of this but few years ago One of Japan's island(i'm sorry i can't remember the name of the island)Faced with a Giant Flood and A lot of people died in this Tragedy
Hopefully, There's also a lot of people survived and that People said they Saved their lives Thanks to the Cats
Because the Cats that Live in that island Climbed to The Top of Buildings and most People who saw them did the same thing which is leaded them to Survive
But this isn't the only good thing that the Cats of that island helped the Survivors, after that Tragedy people started fundings for Main Needs for People so people Used The Heroes of island Citizens(i mean the Cats)as mascot of Fundings, which made Donations Collected Faster than Normal,in the End the some Parts of Fundings goes to The Food for Cats that lives in island
This Story is Kinda interesting to me and if i find the video that i learned this i would put the link here

My aunt had a feral cat who went in the house too. I did not know it was feral and it gave me a big scratch when I tried to pet it. That's the reason I'm still alert with cats. If people let them roam the streets they can become wild and be aggressive towards people. Street dogs are more likely to be friendly than street cats because of differences in domestication. Dogs are a little bit easier to read too. Watching you on their back wagging tail with open belly? Dog: it wants to be pet Cat: Ill scratch you if you pet me. So yeah I do get cats being mean is a thing in cartoons but don't forget about all those mean stereotyped bully type dogs either ;)

Though if I would have to chose I would approach the latter. Wild dogs are either a different species or have become fully feral as an population ( dingo's) with them regaining pre domestication characteristics. I'm talking about street animals. Street cats aren't dependant on humans feeding them, they can and have good opportunities to hunt on the streets. Thus more likely to shun and attack humans. Street dogs are mostly in some way dependant on humans for food and are more likely to approach them and be nice to humans( to get something). Are there violent street dogs? Yes. Are there nice street cats ? Yes. Should you approach either at an fast pace ? No. But I would rather pet a street dog than a cat that approaches me? Imagine this:
A stereotypical villain who wants money, a black cat seated on his lap..
But the villain looks sad. He looks down at the cat and gives it a pet, seeing the cat's ribs as it faintly purrs.
The villain gently picks up the cat and gently carries it like a baby in his arms. Quietly giving the cat a tiny kiss on it's fuzzy forehead.
    It purrs again.
The villain walks into a shelter area filled with cats, and gently sets the cat in it's preferred bed, a few kittens rushing towards the bed and snuggling with the black cat.
The villain gently smiles as he turns away to quietly walk to a pantry where the food was stored, and notices there isn't enough to feed everyone.
He takes out his wallet to see a few small coins fall out and sighs, looking dissapointed in himself.
Then a ginger cat with a scratched up paw slowly pads over to him and gently presses it's forehead on the villain's calf, purring.
A few more cats pad up and gently purr, seeing there's not much food left.
The villain takes a deep breath and smiles mischievously "You all want to help me?" He says quietly.
The cats look up to him and sit politely, eyes wide and licking their lips excitedly.
The villain smiles and whispers "Let's go then" before he starts to head out a back door to the shelter, heading towards an overstocked pet store, the willing cats following in tandem.

Negative depictions of black cats almost scare me at this point. I'm terrified someone might hurt or kill my own for fear of "bad luck" if he gets outside. He likes to look out the windows and beep at the birds, and at Christmas time he'll sit under the tree but he doesn't climb into it. Sometimes I'll look at my bed and suddenly realise he's there, and it's a pleasant surprise. He brings me so much joy. Black cats don't need to be feared, and they can be a source of happiness. People who are scared of black cats are losing, too.

Where I come from, cats are generally despised. I can't count how many times I've heard people say that they hate cats because they're mean, selfish and filthy. I even get a lot of hate when I say I like them... That's bad enough on its own, but the real problem is how it's seen as okay to HURT cats. It breaks my heart every time I see a friendly stray walking up to someone only to get kicked or have something thrown at them, and it pisses me off even more knowing that no one here would ever do that to a dog, but since it's a cat, it's acceptable. Hitting animals in general is fucked up and it sucks seeing one of my favorite creatures on this planet get treated so badly.

This is one of the reasons I keep my cats inside. Not just because spaying and neutering your cats and keeping them inside but giving them enrichment so their not bored helps them not destroy local ecosystems but because of terrible dog people. “I’d run over a cat if I saw one.” “Cats are too aloof and unloving and selfish.” “Cats deserve to be hurt”. And I don’t ever want my cats to be put 20 feet radius from these delusional mutt obsessed sociopaths. I do like dogs don’t get me wrong. My grandma has a fluffy panish dog. And a miniature pincher. My family has an army of cats, and they all have such different, vibrant personalities. The thing about cats is that they naturally need some “me time” and are very particular about the boundaries. All our kitties used to be strays. One of them was found in her adolescence, she doesn’t like being picked up or petted without permission. She is an incredibly adorable cat, and having her carefully approach you and press her forehead against your hand is the most rewarding thing ever. She became skittish after spending her childhood surviving in a basement of an abandoned house, struggling as a teen mom (she had kittens at 6-7 months of age) and fighting off rats that were a constant threat to her and her children, and suffering from illness and starvation. It takes a lot of time for her to start trusting someone. When my mom brought her in she was hiding all the time. Now she spends every night sleeping next to my mom’s face. I know for a fact that people who are not familiar with our cat and cats in general would interpret her behavior as hostile and unfriendly. Why would anyone want a pet that can’t be touched or picked up? It’s sad how little we understand animals, especially those who need help. Our kitty’s health and happiness is worth much more than our ability to pet her.
Besides, she still enjoys human company. On her terms. That’s something you must respect to be friends with a cat

People who hate cats usually do so because they don't understand how cats work or because of the mindset of needing to be the "master". They expect their pets to be fully obedient, but because cats are more free spirited and individuals, it creates this uncertainty and lack of power that makes them frustrated, because they are not fully in control. To me this screams insecurity issues and narcissism.
I myself am a proud cat mom to my 15 year old cat. I used to have two, but her twin sister died few years ago at the age of 12 due complications with health and old age. I've had her and her sister when they were kittens and they were my only friends for most of my childhood. You have a very good point! I was thinking something similiar, but I couldn't find the words. You described perfectly what makes people dislike cats. Every other pet is easy to control, but cats have freedom, as you mentioned. People are not used to that lack of control, and they get trust issues.
I find cats very good to have. First of all, they can take care of themselves, they can go outside and roam freely for hours and still return home as long as you give them food and respect. So if you work a lot, doesn't have the time or ability to take walks everyday, is too busy to play with pets everytime they get playful or bored, a cat is better than a dog. Dogs will get depressed if they find themselves neglected. The dog my family had was sad, because we never had the time or motivation to take long walks and play with her. Now, in her new home where there are children, she has started to eat better, gained weight, and is as playful as she was as a puppy! She is happy now. Meanwhile, our cat Tosco is content with going outside for hours everyday to get exercise and have fun, we don't need to entertain him with toys. He comes inside to eat, sleep and cuddle with us. I think that's why old ladies like cats so much, too. They require only minimal attention per day, unless the cat has special needs.
Second, while dogs need to be trained to sniff out problems in humans, there are often stories of cats waking up humans at night. They had sensed that the human had a pause in their breathing, or for those with diabetes, had low blood sugar. Things like that, cats will warn you about. They need no training for it. So that's another great reason that cats are good as well! Fine if you like dogs more, but there is no need to get biased.

Rats have a similar personality to cats and I love them. I personally hate cats because they kill 1 billion native animals a year in my country and unlike rats or foxes people chuck a tantrum over killing feral cats. I'm cool if you keep your cat inside but if you let it out don't act like it's not killing native wildlife.
I had neiborhood cats that constantly sprayed my front door and car and got into fights every 3rd night or so late at night. They can be sweet I don't doubt that, I feed and care for my neighbors neglected cat because they don't care enough for him and i hope that me feeding him stops him from killing birds, reptiles or mammals. I loved my rats :) I was happy with them even when they wanted space or just wanted to do other stuff. People can dislike cats for reasons other then ego and a desire for control. I dislike them because no one does anything to stop their cats from killing wildlife, breeding and peeing on people's things. They are an extremely successful predator that Australian wildlife had no chance against.
I feel a similar way to brumbys. They trample important borrowing land for wildlife and are basically feral animals but people care more about feral animals then wildlife.
I'm not looking for a fight I'm just stating why I personally don't like them.

We had a family cat a few years back named Truly who was the biggest, sweetest cream-puff you could imagine. She never hissed or bit or scratched once in all her years on this Earth, not even when we would give her a bath; she would just sit there meowing softly as if to say, "I beg your pardon, but I'm a tad uncomfortable being wet and all, so if it's not too much trouble, dear family, it would be ever so kind of you if you could please hurry, perhaps?" And she loved nothing more than to be held and snuggled and rocked like a baby, purring like crazy while you kissed the top of her head. It's hard for me to think of any dogs--let alone any other animals, including people--I've known in my lifetime that have even come close to being as passive, patient, and affectionate as that cat was with all of us. My mom always said half-jokingly that if everyone just had a cat like Truly then there would be no dog people, and I honestly don't think she was too far off the mark. Given how much I love them, I think it's such a shame that cats have gotten such a bad rap in western media. The only ones you largely see portrayed in a positive light are big cats, like lions, but regular, domesticated ones not so much.

A supreme irony in all of this is that cats are much more similar to humans in terms of personality and behavior than dogs are, yet they are portrayed more negatively. I wonder what says about humanity.
And there is definitely a huge dose of misogyny in the way cats are depicted. Most cat characters are usually female and are portrayed as villains at worst or simply selfish at best, whereas the dog characters are usually male and heroic, and even when they are portrayed as evil, it's usually them just following the orders of someone evil.
A lot of writers are male, so perhaps it's them projecting their own misogyny on a convenient target. I mean, in the movie "Cats and Dogs" the cats are literally accused of spreading "radical felinism", so it's definitely possible.

Now, looking at the movies through the eyes of a cat-person, I hate the portrayal. The 2nd movie, despite realizing they compared cats to dictators, still decided to stick with a cat villain. Time skip to now (with a 3rd movie coming out), the new villain isn't a dog but a bird. They'd rather vilify and shit on other pets than to portray a dog in a negative light.

Indeed, but we have to remember that most of the bad dogs are breeds associated with being evil and violent, like rottweilers and bulldogs. That in itself is a harmful stereotype like the one with cats. It doesn't help that the one good dog from the start (Dug) is a Golden Retreiver, arguably the most popular and accepted breed of dog because of its assumed pacifist nature.
It's surprising how the movie doesn't have cats, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have certain stereotypes about an animal representing good or bad natures.

I'm not a big fan of small dog breeds, mainly due to their high-pitched barks that hurt my sensitive ears, but you are right about chihuahuas. Because of being treated like toys or babies, and not like a normal dog, they start acting up, and then people blame it on the breed, rather than the fact how people treat that breed. It's the same with pitbulls and other fighting dogs. They are treated differently because of their breed's history, but if you treat it just like another dog, and trains it like you normally do, and adapt to it's personality, it will be no different. Treat dogs like dogs, with respect and accurate training, make it listen to you, no matter it's size and history, and you'll get a normal dog. Unless they have a mental issue due to poor breeding (which is why it's good to only breed dogs that are friendly and obedient, and not inbred. I've noticed a couple interesting things about this topic.
    1) Typically, in real life, cat people are introverts. And often in fiction, cat people are... evil. This might be a coincidence, but to me it seems like it's drawing an unreasonable parallel between introverts and *bad* which already exists in many places.
    2) In media, since humans like rooting for the underdogs, usually the underdogs between dogs and cats are..... dogs. Like, in many other stories about cats and dogs, humans love cats and cats get away with a bunch of things and are evil and put the dogs in a bad light, because poor *dogs* the shunned dogs because people like cats so much.
So in fiction, either cat people are evil or most people are cat people and the poor dogs are underdogs, or cats have it easy compared to dogs or something. Cats seriously get a bad rap and all of this is so backwards.
I, personally, am a rabbit person XD
I love cats and dogs though, I just think it's super unfair how cats are treated in media. Cats are great creatures, they just show love in less traditional ways.

It's always so weird to me when talking to people who don't like cats. "They're so uncaring." "They're evil!" "It's just using you for food." Etc etc
Like my boy Rusty is super lovey and always needs my attention constantly and gets jealous and acts out if I give attention to one of the other cats (he either makes a mess by throwing food around or ignores me until bedtime). He doesn't like being picked up though and can be pretty shy around new people which instantly means he's cold and unable to know love, obviously. Despite him sleeping with me every night and grooming my arms and needing to be in my lap whenever I'm sitting. It's tiring.
The only cats that get good media attention are big cats, but more specifically lions. And I love lions, don't get me wrong! But I find it odd that the only cats worthy of respect are the most "macho" ones, cause lions are the "king of the jungle" and big powerful creatures. Specifically male lions, as females are generally still just moms/wives/sisters who are pretty lazy and not as cool which is double funny considering female lions are the real breadwinners but y'know.
I kinda got off track and starting rambling, sorry, but my point here is that cats and dogs both can be good (and bad) but we're mostly given cat = evil/snarky/traitorous and dog = good/friendly/loyal story lines, with few exceptions. The thought that cats can be good and dogs (that aren't just pitbulls, dobermans and german shepherds) can be evil. Waiting for a movie with a "big goofy loveable" dog breed as the villain and a cat hero, though I don't see it happening anytime soon. I can dream.
At the very least we have Warriors which has good and bad cats with dogs sometimes being threats, though it's fairly dark and sometimes pretty graphic.

In that way, cats could not only serve as metaphors for ethnic minorities as you proposed in the video, but also metaphors for neurodivergent people. I am autistic, so this is from an autistic point of view and may not encompass the entire neurodivergent experience, but I believe it's still food for thought. One thing in particular is that cats, just like neurodivergent people, are prone to overstimulation. If pet too much, a cat may snap at the person petting, often because the person has failed to pick up on the previous clues the cat has given that it's had enough petting for the time being.

I agree with everything except your take on Isle of Dogs. I am a cat person myself and I agree it'd be awesome to see more positive cat portrayels in media. However, I think Isle of Dogs works in using dogs instead of cats because it is set in Japan. In western media, yes, cats are villainised, however, it's the opposite with Japanese media. Take The Cat Returns as a well known example. I lived in Japan for a year and strong majority of the friends I made preferred cats over dogs. A good portion actually disliked dogs a lot. When I asked why, I found that the answers stemmed a lot from the fact that the people hadn't been exposed to many dogs growing up, and had learnt to fear dogs. Japan has an issue with stray and wild dog populations. A group of stray dogs actually attacked two of my host siblings who were still in primary school. Also, not many people had dogs as pets as opposed to dogs, so I suppose not many people are exposed to your typical friendly domestic dog like we are in western countries. The dogs people do have in Japan are generally very small. I didn't see many big domestic dogs when I lived in Japan.
I just thought this was cool, but I also had a host brother in Japan who went to Canada for an exchange year. Before going to Canada, he hated dogs, but his host family ended up having 7 dogs. By the end of his exchange, he loved dogs and now he really wants to get a dog of his own in Japan :)
I think it makes sense in Isle of Dogs then that dogs would be cast out as opposed to cats. I suppose to a Japanese audience it would definitely subvert their expectations on dogs.

I've always been a cat person, but over the years I've come to like dogs less and less (though I do still like them). The reason? An ill tempered, uncontrolled dog will FUCKING KILL PEOPLE. I became caretaker to 15 feral (almost exclusively black) cats, and once they got used to me they were all as sweet and loving as any housecat, except for one who tended to nip if you pet him (left alone, he was perfectly fine). At the same time, my neighbors had a dog that over several years, chased and attacked my cats, broke in and killed chickens MULTIPLE times, and later attacked a child (who was okay). This dog was not kept behind any fence, was never leashed, and was free to roam the area. And this is neither the first frighteningly aggressive dog I'd met, nor the first this particular neighbor ever had, and the fact that people are so much quicker to jump on cats for being "selfish" or "underhanded" just makes me so mad.
Most dogs are great and sweet and cute. So are most cats. But people don't take aggressive and territorial dogs seriously enough when they are so much more dangerous to completely innocent people and animals going about their business than the worst cat ever could be.

What about The Aristocats? That's the only western film I can think of where the cats are not only on the good side, but they're also the protagonists! And it's a Disney film, a company that has Lucifer (Cinderella), and it's constantly reminding us in short films that Pluto's worst enemy is cats. (Remember Pluto's nightmare? Where the demons are literally cats?)
And also Oliver & Company, the movie has a great balance with the protagonist being a kitten raised by a group of dogs. There's a surprising amount of good cats in Disney films, like Diana in Alice in Wonderland, the cat from 101 Dalmatians, and the cat from The Rescuers.
The unfortunate thing is that most of the movies I mentioned with good cats are very underrated movies that came up in Disney's dark age, so that's why not many people remember these examples.

The way cats act really depends on their personality, but also how their owners treat them. If you treat them with kindness and respect, chances are that's what they'll return to you. Sometimes I just won't be having a good day and I'll sit down on the floor or lie down on my bed, and my cat will notice and lay down beside me. If I'm crying, sometimes she'll even lick my face to wipe away my tears. She's such a sweetheart.

i had a cat who always scratched and hissed at me . I loved her nonetheless and always fed her . Despite seeming like she hated me , she saved my life twice ( once from a scorpion and another time she dashed at me to get me away from a snake ) . It taught me that each of us haas their own love language and just because someone doesn't show it , doesn't mean they're bad or hate .
And I subscribed when you said Isle of dogs should've ben about cats . It would've added so much depth.

Maybe you should get to know a few dogs. You might find that you actually like them. Or you might find out that you don’t. Either is ok. It just seems better to me to base your opinion of a type of animal off of the animals themselves and not how people talk about them. After all, I can’t count the number of people who think they hate cats up until they meet one.

also YES, as a cat lover i'm also sick of cats being misrepresented...
i like the warriors books because most characters in those are cats, and therefore there's a lot of diverse character tropes that the cats fit into.

I have three cats and two dogs. Most of my family are dog people except for my little brother and me. One thing that really annoys me is when my mother and father call our cats cat-dogs. In my parents and many other's eyes, if a cat doesn't fit your stereotype, they are a cat-dog. All three of my cats are kind and cuddly, but as a result of that, are deemed cat-dogs.

Tbf there's already a cat island in japan.
Cats can live on an island pretty easily. They'll even live in colonies without much trouble. Dogs would immediately form packs based on non-related hierarchy, and defend territories and food. This would eventually even out after bloodshed.
Feral cats want nothing to do with people.
Feral dogs will outright attack people.
But I'm not talking tropes, I guess.

    imagen this:
a movie where at first, we think the dogs are the good guys, and our protagonist is either a dog or a person with a dog.
maybe even add a prey animal that cats chase like a mouse or bird to really make us beleive that the cats are at least mean.
but we eventally see a cat and the protagonist befriends them and realises that they arent inheritly bad. in fact, the protagonist realizes that cats are suffering because of these sterotypes.
here, we see that both sides aren't 100% good.
the "majorities" side dislikes cats due to sterotypes. at the least, they just don't treat cats as well as other animals...at the worst.... cats are banished or even killed on sight.
but the cats aren't 100% innoceant. either being rude to others out of anger, or even trying to harm our protagonists, because "they hurt us so we hurt them!"
but of course not everyone is like that.
some cats are either fearful or chill with our protagonists.... and some of the majorty(yknow. dogs birds rodents ect) don't think cats are bad.
at the end our protagonists journey, the truth about cats is revealed. they arent all bad. yes some could be, but not all of them. every speicies is capable of being good and evil, and we shouldn't just assume things because of some miss-information or sterotypes.
    can we just...picture that.
a movie showing us the harm that sterotypes and prejiduce can cause? how everything is not always black and white?
i'd love that honestly. and to make it even better, have both (or all three) protagonists be equally as useful and important.
the cat protagonist doesn't even have to lazy and sneaky...instead they could be cautious, easily startled, and observent. why? because of the way people see cats. and because cats are predator and prey, who are usuallly very cautious.
the dog protagonist could still be loyal, but also loud and passoinate about their beliefs to the point where they can be a bit stubborn. dogs are pack animals, and tend to be strong right?
im not too good at explaining things, but to make it short:
story about cats being persecuted, dog and cat become friends and equally important protagonists, dog and cat work together to show that the sterotypes are wrong.
both sides shouldn't be 100% good or 100% bad
1: it wouldn't be too fair.
2: not everyone in the "majority" support misstreatment and seggragation.
3: those who are mistreated let out their pain and anger in many ways....sometimes negetivly.
