Hey guys, hope everyone’s doing good! Here’s a Ruby semblance video. This was fun to make, and I hope you guys enjoy seeing how Ruby’s semblance evolved too. I also like how the animation just gets smoother and better since the beginning, it’s always satisfying to watch that! 😄 Thank you to all who have subscribed and watched, it means a lot to me! I’ve been a bit busy recently but I hope to post more vids in time to come so do stay tune.

I think it only happened twice, and 3 times when ruby used her semblance with others. 2 of them, is with nora when fighting a geist on v4, and the other is with weiss on v6. Both nora and weiss turns into petals with their respective aura color. The other is when v8, but that is with weiss, nora, penny, blake, and may. That is 6 total colors to put in one. That is a hustle to create those, or they just forgot that, or an animation fluke.
I love that effect too. But, from a production standpoint, I can understand the change. When it was just Ruby and one other person, it made sense. But now she can carry upwards of 4 other people. That’d just complicate the animation.

Bit sad that they made her semblance form more distinctly solid looking. In the beginning, it was so fast and whirled so quickly that its form was more like a chaotic blur. Towards the end, they toned down the color, slowed it down, and gave it distinct edges so we could clearly see it and track her movements. I think it takes a bit away from the feeling of sheer motion and speed. There's a lot going for the shows quality, but movement is definitely something the later seasons lacked.
I think it’s control. You’re right, but her semblance is now something she has even more control over so maybe that’s what they went for?

It's a general feeling with the newer seasons really. Everything is a lot smoother and flowy but it's missing that speed and impact of the old animation styles
It was speed at first with the addition of leaving rose petals behind. Then it got stronger and faster that her first petal form happened in v2. She tried to use it on Penny but she couldnt transform to petals and almost passed out. So she used this form time to time and for a short time but when she is running she didnt. And it can seen through v1,2,3 her speed is increasing.
With v4 she started to use petal form continuously. There were so many petals around and her movements were zigzag, not a straight line. But she managed to use it on one person(Nora) with no problem.
In v6 she used on Weiss effortlessly and her petal form looked more solid, I mean in v4 there were so many petals around, to me it looked like wasted aura but in v6 her petals looks more whole and there are less scattered petals.
Then in v7 she learned its not just speed and her petal form can seperate. Its worth pointing out that she could do it in past like v4 red trailer or at the beginning of v7 when they fought to saber grimms(i dont remember their name). So she learned to use it consciously and with training with Weiss or/and Harriet her movements become more straight.
In v8 she learned true nature of her semblance and she was able to carry 4 person that includes Penny, it seemed that its still exhausting but she will get better. Also when she was getting everyone inside of the vault she drew a straight line, it was satisfaying.
And lastly in the end of v8 right before the fight between Cinder and them she didnt hit anybody who was running away and she reacted to Cinder's fire in her petal form. I guess she can see or something but it was interesting she was the only one who reacted to fire. Its my crack theory but maybe in petal form she covers others she carries from outside so that she was the only one who felt the heat and petals looks just red colour. Well it doesn’t explain when she carries one person but who knows the details. 🤷
I know its like super long and messy and it can be seen from this video but i really wanted to point out how it evolved and how she got better of it.
Edit:I forgot to mention Ruby's semblance's time limit. Between v1 and v4 her semblance's limit is 1-2,5 seconds; in v6-7 its 2,5-3 seconds and with v8 its 4 seconds, this are on screen so its hard to put what her limit exactly is. It would also explain at 4:48 why she couldnt reach the cliff.

I also thought of that months ago before this video, but you had the guts to comment this, in better explanation and detail. And i hate it when people keeps forgeting some details, then rant about that it lacks the detail and explanation. The haters just ignore whats in front of them, and rant that theres nothing in front of them. Thanks for sharing your opinion.
I really miss when Ruby used Crescent Rose to fly around. Now she just uses her semblance.
And then the writers power scaled her semblance as well.

im a little sad we didnt get to see all the girls colors as petals in the volume 8 group petal burst like we did with weiss and nora
I am too and for as cool visual effect as it was, maybe it just wasn’t the smartest strategically. Say Ruby was fighting an opponent and she had backup nearby but the opponent only knew of Ruby. Ruby used her semblance a few times so they know to associate the color. Now say she picks up said backup using petal burst and the opponent, still thinking it’s just Ruby, is suddenly met with more combatants. I think it’s a cool veil so to speak. That’s how I’d justify it.
Am I alone in my preference of how her semblance was shown in the early volumes over the later years?
In the early version she’d have a trail of rose petals following her, but she didn't lose her form except for when she going so fast she became a red blur.
Now it feels like she never uses that anymore and just becomes a floating ball any time she needs to move faster than walking speed.
I'm not really against it, I just prefer the way it was before, where the petal burst form was only used in rare, or special cases.
lets just say, the show kind of made Ruby slower than before, you can literally see the difference.
Isn't it because she sacrifice speed for maneuverability ? in earlier season she can only use short bursts of her semblance in a straight line, while later seasons show she can use more complex movement

@@Ammy-q4w My head canon is that she's able to condense her and anyone thru touch into petals, which she can then manipulate at high speeds. Kinda like shinra's adolla burst ability.
Went from blinking from one place to another at the speed of (probably) light to seeing a red curtain flying in the area.

Semblances evolve with practice, experience and use. It is, in a sense, a muscle, if you exercise it it becomes stronger. As touched on by Winter and Ren throughout the series. Ruby’s started off as just speed, then evolved to the point it is at now as a breaking down of her body and others to what seems to be a high level of control over molecular cells… Since it’s a show that’s never really followed the rules of reality everyone returns to their original state after she deactivates her semblance.
I absolutely love the evolution from pure speed boost to her later understanding her ability into the petal torpedo, or petalpedo if you will, becoming her primary utilization of it as it allows for better control of movement via allowing her to gain altitude or move through or arround stuff as needed. And the fact that she only started to realize the capabilities of it because she was tryharding a foodfight is pure gold

First running
The sprinting
Now flying
She went from being super fast, to being able to launch herself as a vortex, to turning into rose petals and being able to fly, to being able to turn into separate bunches of rose petals, and now being able to carry other people with her.
And some people think this is a downgrade, lmao.

She was able to 1v4 against team JNPR with her semblance alone in volume 2 and destroy an entire horde of grim in a matter of seconds in the red trailer but now can’t even hold her own in battle. Her change of speed to maneuverability was honestly trash because the whole point of her semblance was to increase the power of her scythe. Due to its weight and size, Crescent Rose is powerful but slow so by using her speed she’s able to gain momentum of a heavy weapon to deliver powerful blows. For example, when you look at Ruby fighting the wolf grim in the red trailer, after she reloads she to goes from 0 to 100. She gives off the impression of a fast moving train coming right at them. She feels threatening and dangerous and that’s how she’s supposed to be. She’s a cute little girl with a huge ass deadly scythe. That’s why so many people fell in love with RWBY. It’s unexpected but it works. With her semblance now, even if she has maneuverability, she’s a much weaker fighter and it’s not nearly as cool to visually watch.
I feel like the concept that Monty had in mind was not “breaking Ruby down to her molecular level” and instead “eliminating air resistance by temporarily turning the elements of the air into rose petals”
So she keeps her Mass and instead had absolutely zero resistance as she runs, allowing her momentum to increase exponentially
Wait, so this means Ruby, _without her semblance,_ is fast enough to create a wind tunnel.
I think her semblance was speed but has evolved into what it is now
@@Stove0451 The CRWBY is actually really good at planning ahead with these kinds of details. I actually guessed pretty early on that Ruby's semblance was actually turning into a wind elemental, which in volume 8 has more or less been confirmed.

Listening to those with the knowledge of what eventually comes in later volumes, especially the commentaries for the early volumes, it's extremely easy to read between the lines and hear clues and seeds for plot points that we eventually see in way later volumes. Monty even drops a hint specifically about the evolution of semblances in one of the commentaries. We also hear the reverse of this in later Volume commentaries where Miles and Kerry are finally able to talk about some of the things they've been holding onto for so long, such as in the Volume 6 commentary where Miles goes into detail about the process of coming up with Salem and Ozpin's backstory before they even started writing Volume 1. And on the rare occasion where they introduce something big that wasn't part of the original plan, they fully admit it, like they did with the Maidens in the Volume 3 commentary, clarifying that Monty only thought of them between Volumes 2 and 3 but they really liked the idea so they reworked the future plot to fit them in.
It sounds to me like you're the one who has drunk the kool-aid being offered by RWBY's cultish hater group. A group that ironically has so much trouble actually finding things to hate on that they constantly have to resort to just making up random bullshit like you did here.
Idk how I never noticed this, but at 7:01 you can see Ruby crying because of what Neo did to Yang. That's a nice touch.
Ruby’s probably the most badass character in this entire saga.

@@DragonxFlutter The 2v2 against ace ops. And qrows flight through the airships Window. Yang blew salems chest up and didnt show fear while ruby cried when salem mentioned her mom.
@@hntr5495 Trauma effects people differently. And considering what she had just seen with The Hybrid, it’s no wonder she started breaking down. Yang also broke down when Ruby shared her thought process, and then turned that grief into anger to fuel her fight on the BattleWhale.
Qrow’s fight against Ace Ops wasn’t as long as Ruby’s. Not to mention, he’s older and far more experienced than them. Plus, his goal wasn’t to defeat them, it was to stall them. Ruby, by contrast, is far less experienced and was able to disable Harriet on her own.

It’s amazing the animation evolved from MMD quality to Toy Story 2 quality. I can’t say the same thing about the writing.

5:04 is probably the best modern RWBY action sequence.
one thing ruby used to do that I really miss is using cresent moon's gun to prepel herself, like on the nevermore fight where she used it to keep herself afloat. It shows the massive weight difference between her and her weapon, also just how powerful the gun is and how easy it is for her to casually use it to her advantage. It's always been in her style to improvice stuff. She just doesn't seem to be doing it anymore and I miss it.

Season 1 Ruby had something special...
They kinda murdered her character over and over again.
Remember when she was weapon designer prodigy that built her own weapon. A weapon that had gained a reputation as being insanely dangerous?
Remember when she would gush over others weapons because that was the kinda nerd that she was.
I mean she mentioned that "all the students at Signal forge their own weapons" so she wasn't a prodify in that regard. She also based her weapon on her uncle's and was a combat prodify because she trained under Qrow from a young age...as did Yang, meaning Ruby was only so much of a prodigy as Yang was, and Ruby was most likely allowed to attend Beacon early because she had silver eyes and fit the "simple, honest soul" description Oz was rooting for.
If you're gonna bitch about character writing, at least bother to know what you're talking about.

When is the last time she gushed over another's weapon... asked how it was made... talked about design points of it?
When is the last time you saw her reading up on crafting parts for weapons.
That was basically her starting point as a character and while development is fine... they straight dropped it completely... which is sad and what I'm complaining about.

@@Lyralye23 "Dangerous weapons ever designed" as in dangerous in general. Scythes can be just as dangerous to the wielder as they are to the target if used improperly. He was incredulous that a more basic combat school would allow a 15 year old to use a weapon that's just as dangerous to her as it is to the people she's fighting.
Also they dropped it within two episodes so you're kinda shooting yourself in the foot there.
The way penny described ruby’s semblance in volume 8 made me think of it as slow teleportation instead of instantaneous

They actually had it in the show several episodes before any attention is drawn to it. This is before we're even told to look out for something more happening with her semblance.

welp, almost all of team RWBY got nerfed.
Ruby - from hyperspeed-style of fighting and semblance usage to mere shooting and flying around
Blake - from clever usage of her ribbon and semblance + dust combo to pretty much just crying and whining during combat. she barely even use dust anymore
Weiss - from a graceful-looking and well-balanced application of fencing + glyphs during combat to a mage-centric style. it's like she forgot how to fight with a rapier
Yang - kinda got buffed 'coz metal arm, but PTSD kinda cancels it out
And it seems that Ruby's fighting has slowed down and feels less aggressive (imo)
Blake didn't help her case with v8 with Ruby was knocked unconscious by the Hunter and was fighting poorly claiming they can't do anything with Ruby.
Weiss feels like she forgets she's a support/caster that can buff and probably debuf the enemy and instead using summoning more than her other abilities.
And Yang eh not really much because in v4 she started learning to fight more level headed and defensively and she did use it during Adam's rematch but since then she seems to have floated back to her old way of just punching (imo)
Everyone got nerfed. Even Jaune believe it or not.
I rewatched the food fight the other day and found out that he used to do flips.
I think the food fight was the best showing of her Semblance’s full power to date

Honestly at this point I think Ruby might start shifting how she uses her semblance. If she's really just phasing into a cloud and reforming herself elsewhere, I wonder if she can just become a cloud of petals and hide on the ground, or stay still while using it? The main form she becomes when moving fast can change directions midair, so she theoretically should be able to functionally fly with a bit of effort.
So, her semblance peaked in the food fight in vol2, and then was nerfed really hard afterwards.
How was it nerfed?

@@megajuri3164 Well, the thing is that the RWBY pre volume shorts aren't really cannon (because sometimes they conflict with the main plot), and even what Ruby does in that short, it was not to the same level of strength of what we see in the food fight.
But yeah, its not even just her semblance, Ruby was nerfed overall like many other characters, she also became worse with her scythe.
Compare the way she moves with her scythe early on to what we see in more recent volumes and its aparent.
She is much slower with it nowadays.

I think the different animation they used after volume 3 made all the scenes lose a sense of speed, everything feels really floaty
i think i have a good explaination of why her semblance is so different from the first season than the 7th (excluding the fact that it could be an oversight or just the animation getting better)
explanation (and my headcanon)
her semblance isn't a speed semblance, its a mobility semblance. her body, as explained by penny, breaks down and her molecules get dispersed, that's why she is able to split and her molecules get turned into rose petals. so in the first season she mistakes it as a speed semblance because the weight of her body is lowered do the her molecules becoming rose petals. notice she doesn't transform completely and only a few rose petals are made. that's when she gains a better hold on her semblance and is able to become full roses and split her body.
Okay this is gonna be controversial. But V4 ruby's semblance IS THE BEST IT HAS LOOKED

She busted through the doors in Ironwood’s office while in pedal form. I don’t think that she would have been able to do that in her normal form.

I liked more her original speed. I don't mind the petals it's just way more fun. It's like if her body was pulled so fast she couldn't even really run.

Why couldn’t they just keep it to turning into rose petals allowing her to move at high speeds? It’s just so much simpler and interesting. Like if they kept the turning into roses semblance, Ruby would be able to create a vacuum vortex of roses with her speed and straight up annihilate hordes of grim in a matter of seconds while being intangible. Ok well, I guess that’s pretty op though. But STILL!!! She’s the main character. I just want to see her do badass main character things for once.
It looks to me like her semblance started off as super-speed, but evolved into teleportation. This probably happened as a result of Ruby feeling like she was never fast enough to save anyone since it seems to change the most post-Volume3.

I feel like her semblance has a lot of layers. I think she can unconsciously tap into her semblance to give her extra strength and speed like we see when she zips around in the earlier Volumes. I think beyond that is where she actually dematerializes and spins around. Personally that’s just my guess

It’s an evolution, now she can fly, carry up to 4 people, split up, and revert instantly. Honestly I don’t know how this is a nerf if any way- they just can’t visually show her going as fast as she used to because it used to be only one or two directions, and if they wanted to it would always be difficult to show fluidly. Imagine just a regular paced video then the camera starts going at fuggin Mach speeds to catch up with ruby. Idk it just doesn’t work, gosh that was a mouthful, sorry
Oh yeah if the reason for her semblance is because she’s breaking down into molecules to flow freely, does that mean her earlier mode is much slower cause she isn’t transforming completely?
Ruby seems like a huge dork. I kinda like it.
So it did change. I never noticed. Initially it was just a burst of speed, then it was a mix of speed burst and cape twist, then it was cape twist now she can split herself when twisting.
As for Ruby herself, I like young Ruby's design better.
This freaking show is soooo good!
That semblance is overpowered, she can even fly with it. Also, the first time she transformed was not even from practice, but from a food fight.
But it's not overpowered, she uses it for brief moments and can't use it that long. She tends to rely on her on foot speed a lot more because semblances aren't meant to be used long.

If all semblance can't be used that long, then comparing it to other semblances, hers is overpowered. Just like the polarity semblance.

She didn't use her semblance in the first episode tho. She used the recoil of her crescent rose to do all that movement

Man. Watching these back, the power that was presented by their semblances used to be so massive. Now they barely crack sidewalks.
I dunno if anyone else has actually thought of this, but we’ve kinda already seen Ruby’s semblance at its peak. Though it’s practically been retconned, like RT does often for stupid reasons, it’s been obvious since the beginning.
Think about it. Her semblance goes from super speed in a straight line, to super speed in different directions, then super speed where she can split herself to avoid obstacles, then finally Penny’s explanation of her breaking herself down to her molecular components.
So how much more faster can her semblance actually make her?
The answer is she doesn’t. She doesn’t get any faster. Instead she uses the molecular breakdown aspect of her semblance to perform an ability that transcends speed.
TELEPORTATION.
If any of you remember the Red Trailer? It’s been there since the beginning.

It's a shame the writers completely forgot about Ruby's (and Weiss's) semblance when it came to saving a falling Yang in the ending arc of V8.
Choosing to just have her stand around and watch as her sister falls to her perceived death.
Of course the power scaling was intentional. The same with her Silver Eyes.
I wonder if Ruby is traumatized from the lives she took
Ok so first she creates a rose trail and a mini storm, then she became a rose petal storm that can fly, she became nerfed and now can't fly for extended periods with her semblance malfunctioning, then her nerf is removed and can teleport through things while also busting through metal doors with no stopping. And overall she gets much slower as it progresses including her wielding crescent rose.
TLDR: It became bullshit and broken because having a character move interestingly was harder than just making her teleport.
It literally didn't and teleportation is literally so boring in comparison to what she does.
I still feel like theirs more to it. Her semblance was never really explained or poorly explained
Hmm I wonder if during the food fight is when Ruby “activated” her semblance? When explaining semblances and when they kicked in to Oscar, Nora said she got struck by lightning and didn’t die, and Ruby said hers kicked in during training one day. I wonder if this was that day?

The only thing that really evolved was the fact she was able to split the pedal speed into more than 1 and how she can transport more than 1 person when she goes sonic speed

I thought of a nice upgrade for her scythe. Her scythe isn't very practical for fighting due to the sickle part being super large, the staff part is too long, and she doesn't make the best use of her ranged melee atm. So my changes were:
1. Change the blade to a smaller dust blade that can use elements kinda like raven's swords but have the ability to launches projectile waves
2. Remove the sniper and add a chain instead so you can grab and force opponents in your range
3. Make the staff portion smaller. She doesn't fight at a mid range like the scythe should so this would adjust it to be a better upclose weapon.
These changes would make her scythe faster, have more utility, be less predictable, compliment her up close style, and boost her combat ability
1:12 is probably my favorite version of her semblance. The rest seem either too formed or way too soft.
The more her semblance evolve. The more brain cell she lose when using it.
I miss young Ruby. Oh well, not like she could have eternal youth or anything like that.
I think ruby somehow got slower over time but learned how to use rose speed for longer periods of time and the ability to take multiple people with her is also a thing
But at the same time watching how rose speed compared to the lightning based super speed made it still seem extremely fast
Also temporary flight? Thats new compared to volume 1-3

I don't mean to ruin the video but there's actually the misconception that Ruby is using her Semblance it's actually the Gravity dust that she shoots from her weapon it's only certain times she uses her semblance and the rose petals are just apart of her costume but there is a theory that she needs to shed aura because she has so much And when she runs up walls it's usually Weiss's Semblance that allows her to do that But when she does use her Semblance Rose Petal Burst There is a ton more of rose petals
The problem with Ruby's combat now is that they rely on semblances, the battles from v4-9 make it seem like if you don't have a semblance that can hard carry you in battle ur done. But v1-3 don't give that feel at all, RIP Monty Oum
i miss how her semblance used to work. she used to just have super speed that left behind rose petals because she was moving so fast. it was a cool and unique stylistic approach that made her interesting to watch in battle. she never used to have that ugly spinning blob effect, but now thats what she looks like. she looks so slow now, too. they changed it so she turns into rose petals or something and can fly or whatever, but it was just originally superspeed

Cause for what we saw in early seasons she kinda didn’t fully mastered compared how she uses it at later seasons
interesting, post monty the power levels seem toned down in a way, less over the top, fast paced and epic. dude really was a genious, not just in choreography.
I'm sorry her semblance looks terrible with how they changed it. Having sheets cover her makes it look way less dynamic and fluid like how it's explained

Its not an evolution the writers just change how it works based on plot convinience, same as Yang's and Jaune's semblance.

Can we do an evaluation of her voice? I love love lovvve rwby but when the show started she talked normal then for a lot of seasons she sounded like she was choking on her on vocal cords attempting to sound younger. Lol it’s a lot better now. Am I the only one who was bugged by that?
I wonder if the rose pedals are sometimes the blood of her enemies when she fights them?
Man ruby was awesome back at the beginning of the series she kinda sucks now in terms of combat in volumes 7 and 8

I know they've made her semblance more animated and detailed so we can see the form better. But because we can see it better makes it look slower. I dont know if its just me, but her attacks look slower too. If you look back on v1 where she fought with Roman, she was quick and used her semblance with her scythe, not one or the other. Her attacks look slow to me.
And after looking at a few clips, after around v5, when she warps out of the petal form (not sure what it's called) theres this unnecessary small time where she just stands there to regain her balance, yes, I get it, its more realistic that way. But she never had to do that in v1. She almost kinda used her scythe to regain her balance and added another attack along the way.
Well considering she was never a human vs human type of fighter it makes sense she loses often she has a scythe which also doesn’t help as it’s mostly an anti grim weapon
@@rhianfb5253 they are doing a different style after Monty passed. Monty was known for fast, seemless, dance-like battles. That is why we see a dramatic change post volume 3. They need to just have Torrian direct the fights imo.
