How'd you get your semblance? Nora: Got struck by lightning, didn't die. This makes me think she has a resistance to electricity, she'll still take damage but it's lessened since she's channeling it through her to amplify her strength and attacks.
You forgot "Craaaaazy Tuesday!" As for the resistance but still damage, I think she's just fully immune. When she got shocked in the Vital tournament, she just stood there and grinned, and Ruby hit her with a high-impact sniper shot without doing her any serious harm.
@@Oreyee She's not immune to the effects of electricity, but it definitely takes WAY more to have a negative effect on her. She's out for hours in volume 8 after absorbing the charge from the security door in ep 3.

Nora may not be able to channel Alternating Current {AC current, commonly used in industry and households} in the amounts and as well as she can channel Direct Current {DC current, like the current your body uses in your nerves and muscles}. DC current is the type of current contained in lightening, and why it can be survivable. The voltages are in the millions, but the amperage is relatively low. The amperage in AC current is relatively high, and it stops normal electrical activity in your body's muscles, like your heart. That's why your house appliances can kill you with AC current, while your car normally won't with it's low voltage DC current. Highly powered AC current, like in power lines, is especially deadly. That barrier in the Atlas control center could have been more AC current than Nora could safely handle, as it also caused the scars on her body.
@@Oreyee Hi! Please read my response to Miria Jiyuu, I think I know why Nora got hurt in Volume 8. It has to do with the Type of currents, which can be different and more dangerous depending on the current type, voltage and amperage amounts.

I don't often think about the actual type of current and you're correct, it could have this type of effect. Previously we're aware she's channelled lightning and lightning dust charges, never the equivalent of sticking a fork in a socket.
it was revealed in the latest episode that Qrow's semblance is actually fortune, but his outlook on life is what makes it good or bad luck. Qrow has been hurting for a long time and he's convinced his semblance is bad luck, so bad luck happens but when he finally had hope during season 8 his semblence activated on the good luck side and stopped the bomb from falling out of the ship and saved mantle for a bit longer that way.
@@blake6210 when the bomb starts rolling out and qrow can no longer stop it, clover's pendant shines like it usually does whenever clover used his semblance, thus good luck happens and the bomb doesn't fall out of the ship.

@@AsianIdiots323 Both theories can be true-- though you still can't deny the absurdism of that bomb not falling can only be because of good luck. My personal theory is that Qrow has probability manipulation, which shifts depending on his mindset. He was probably born with a pessimistic outlook on life so his semblance manifested into misfortune. But remembering Clover and choosing to be optimistic for the first time caused his semblance to shift into good fortune. Orrr it could just be a semblance evolution, who knows really ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Something that isn't something talked very much about Semblances is the meaning behind them or how represent the characters's personalities. For example, Pyrrah's *Polarity* is her wish to keep people close to her yet keeping at certain distance (or simply pushing then away. Yang's *Burn* represent her willing to take damage to protect her friends or family.
I feel like Semblances spawn off of trauma, that's why they are like the characters. Jaune's appeared when Weiss was close to dying and it wasn't just by chance that he had the ability to amplify her aura to heal her ya know? Also not really a chance Ren got tranquility when he needed to keep hidden from grim. Nora got hit by lightning and her semblance was unlocked there too. Its a pattern i appreciate

Similarly, clovers and qrows are lightly hinted to be *identical*, and simply a matter of direction via perception. Qrow sees his as "bad luck", and therefore it tends to manifest that way, whereas clover saw his as "good luck", and as such vice versa. The new season kinda confirmed that as he tapped clovers badge right before a bout of "good luck". Semblances can also evolve and change. Ruby's went from a single-direction dash to a adjustable dash, noticeably after failing to arrive in time to save phyyra. Other personality-semblances are Blake "leaving scapegoats" for herself, not directly blaming others for her own problems, but more... running away and letting others take the fall, Adam's similar yet more toxic "It wasn't me it was you" personality manifesting as his reflecting damage via moonslice, nora's energy being... electric, weiss's family being overly structured and expected to fit into a pre-determined mold, Raven's complex "I care but I am ashamed of caring" manifesting as the "everyone gets one" save approach. Can't think of many more off the top of my head, but that hits a fair few of the main cast.
I like to think that ruby got her semblance during training with qrow. Like qrow was drunk in one of rubys training sessions and got carried away with an attack so ruby unlocked her semblance so she could dodge the attack.
Imagine if Jaune was able to amplify Pyraah’s aura during her battle with Cinder on top of Beacon tower, she prop would’ve stood a better chance against her
I don't know about that. Cinder loves to exploit the desire to protect one's allies. She knocks Jaune down at some point in the battle, Pyrrah charges Cinder, Cinder points blades at Jaune, then deals a fatal blow to Pyrrah when she tries to save Jaune.
While I love the idea, Jaune didn't have his semblance unlocked during the Fall of Beacon. He unlocked it during the battle at Haven when Weiss got injured. Still though, maybe seeing Pyrrha get shot in the ankle/chest would've unlocked it then, but then your looking at Rubys eyes not activating.
@@scrambledEgg69 Yea from a writing stand point that's why they probably wrote Jaune not being near Pyrrah at the fall of beacon because they needed Ruby's eyes to activate. Without that plot point I think Jaune would've been there and saved Pyrrah., possibly.
My favorite semblance so far is overactive imagination, How well its used to not only trick opponents but to emotionally wound them is a really cool concept
Velvets semblance name is called mimicry as she can mimic any fighting style she has seen. This is why she has a camera and Photobox. She takes a picture the photobox stores it and uses the image to produce hardlight dust weapons. Doing this destroys the image. Thats why Coco tells her not to waste it during the attack on Vail in season 2.
Also, I don’t understand where he got that velvet can’t replicate someone’s semblance we WATCH her use ruby pedal burst when we finally see her fight, she replicated the weapons to use in conjunction with semblances (from what I can tell, it would be super dumb if crwby rectconned this after showing us that velvet used Ruby’s semblance (albeit a blue version of it) )
@@Sin_cities If you look at Velvet right before she attacks in 0.25 speed, she just jumps above the paladin. Faunus in RWBY seem to have more enhanced features in comparison to the humans in the show, ie, having a higher natural jump, being naturally fast and landing easier. I made sure to check because at a quick glance it does seem like velvet uses Petal Burst, but it's just her jumping above the paladin in the fight

I know I'm 2 months late but I didn't see any other comments address this. I'm pretty sure Weiss's semblance has only two abilities. Summoning and manipulating momentum through glyphs. All the extra things she does with them is her combining her glyphs with dust.
On the topic of Qrow ... with him focusing on the "Clover Pin" he can voluntarly stop his bad luck for a limited time and while in deep concentration. Maybe his semblance will evolve to be able to be controlled and focused in the future ... and maybe he could even make a void of karma that can store good luck and then release the void and have a short burst of luck for that person, object or location.
The only things the Schnee family's Glyph semblance seem to be able to do on their own is to create solid glyph platforms that can support weight, and call upon any Grimm they've slain to summon as allies. All other applications require various types of Dust to use - gravity dust creates the black glyphs that can push and pull stuff, lightning dust creates the time dilation effect she uses on Blake in V2 and on herself several other times, and her blue and red glyphs she uses to launch ice and fire attacks use the same types of dust accordingly. This kind of implies to me that dust can actually be combined with a number of semblances to create elemental effects, but Weiss is the only character besides Hazel who actually uses it as a key piece of their fighting style since her status and resources actually allow her to replenish her stores pretty easily and it pairs well with her glyphs in the first place. I wonder what other combinations could be created by combining semblances and dust?
Glyphs is one of my favorite semblances because of how well it works within the context of the shows magic system. Semblances grow and develop as they are used which is why glyphs is so versatile, it has been developed over generations. I also think the semblance isn't exactly hereditary, but because the Schnee family name is so prominent in the children's lives they inherit the semblance as well. One of the most well written ones imo Edit: Thinking more about it this is also why her semblance works so well with dust. Man glyphs is hands down my favorite they really popped off with that one.
Agreed, I almost want to see Weiss's semblance evolve further to represent the formation into her own person, separate from the rest of the Schnee family. (a little bit like how Uchiha's in Naruto have the same general abilities, but manifest them individually as they become their own person)
1: I don’t think Whitley will get the glyphs, considering his experience with his own family. His father was abusive, his mother was neglectful, and his sisters abandoned him. Since the glyphs remind me of full metal alchemist, maybe his semblance will be the opposite. Born out of a desire to show his family that he’s done being a part of it. 2: My head cannon is that crow got his semblance from the guilt of being labelled a “bad luck charm” by his tribe. Likely being blamed for a member’s death. Thoughts?
I believe its only passed down to the females, I think there was an episode where Weiss was like "are you jealous you'll never get this semblance" I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure

He can't amplify his own aura, Only the aura of others and he has more aura then most, a little side effect is that his aura's healing effect is faster than regular people
Once Jaune gives someone his aura and after he recovers, does that aura amount stay the same ? I remember Pyrrha saying that Jaune has an incredibly high amount of aura, so is it kind of infinite ? I don't know if I am asking correctly the point I'm trying to make...
0:36 Actually semblances can evolve depending on how much someone changes personally. Ozpin explains this in Volume 5 while training Ruby. Won't be drastic, but subtle. Ren's for example. You do mention that Ren's semblance evolved, but it is strange you forgot this at the beginning of the video.
he could have just stored up a ton of damage on a bunch of other weapons when in an easy fight and then when he needs them he could just demolish everything with that stored power. he probably could have just gotten someone from the white fang to deal damage to it while he was still alive but of course that would be far too overpowered and therefore was not used in the show
I think one thing you misinterpreted with Misfortune and Mettle is that they're passive, not random. Both of them are always on once they're triggered. If Qrow's is triggered when he's wary, then it will keep going until he feels safe. On the other hand, Mettle allows Ironwood to hyperfocus until his intend goal is met. The problem is, Mettle won't deactivate until said goal is met which has led to Ironwood's decision in recent episodes- Mettle is in overdrive and it will not switch off until the goal 'protect Atlas' is met
Rose* Petal Burst: I personally see Ruby's Semblance first starting off as a standard Super Speed Semblance at the beginning of the show with a few times of its true nature popping up such as her ending the food fight against Team JNPR and it evolving after Vol 3 to its true form. Since it's stated that Semblances evolve over time, similar to how a hero with super strength will be stronger as an adult than as a teen when they first got it. Ruby's Semblance definitely seems like it has the potential to become the most video game like Semblance, i.e. doing video game mechanics, such as double jumping, changing outfits quickly and reloading like a Hunter from Destiny 2. Glyphs: At its base form Glyphs mostly act like platforms to either block attacks or add mobility for Weiss in battle such as the clip shown where she used them to bounce around Flint in Vol 3 like a pinball. The Summons are actually the defeated foes of Weiss, so in a way that makes her and anyone with this Semblance a necromancer, even though Grimm aren't really considered as living creatures. The Time Dilation/Speed Boost is actually a result of Weiss using Lighting Dust with her Glyphs, which is one of the reasons her weapon, Myrtenaster has a rotating Dust Chamber similar to a revolver, gives her elemental options and special changes to her Glyphs. Aura Amp: The limitations of Jaune's Semblance is mostly his own storage of Aura. It's a mix of Amping up a peron's Semblance to do more with it and him acting as a tank of Aura for them to use. Think Aura as shields from Halo, healing potions and a Mana bar all in one. It helps a Huntsman survive attacks that would kill normal people, heal an injury faster and allows one to use their Semblance, so either action will drain it faster or slower depending on a situation. Jaune has a large amount of Aura to help out a friend who needs the boost but he currently needs to physically touch them to give them the boost, keep up the boost and depending on the situation needed for the Semblance such as with Ren's to keep a large crowd of civilians safe from Grimm, he could use up all of his Aura and has to wait for it to regenerate. High Voltage: Glad you mentioned she can generate electricity as well but not fully explaining that her Semblance acts similar in nature to Yang's in that it makes her physically stronger as well. Glide: I mean, they all can't be winners and considering his allusion, it makes sense. Hype: Yeah very straight forward with her Semblance. Velvet: She's basically Taskmaster from Marvel but without the drawback of losing a random memory from learning new moves and the Dust she uses is called Hardlight Dust, which also requires her to take pictures of weapons to copy them. Telekinesis: Also apparently repair structures as well since I believe she did that to the plaza(?) where the Breached happened in Vol 2 and trying to do that at the end of Vol 3. Kindred Link: Biological Mother is a better title for her. Mettle: Again not all winners. Stay: It also seems like if the target(s) are in a rather fast motion its a difficult task for him especially if they are a physical strong person. Invisibility Field: Anyone else thinking of Ivara from Warframe but a slightly bigger scale? Cinder: That's a tricky one because she did get a CERTIAN boost in Vol 3 so it's more likely she's using that power instead of her own Semblance, given her need for power. Although easy to tell she's using that power fully after Vol 3 but it wouldn't be impossible she would use her Semblance to be subtle. Neo and Emerald: Basic difference between them is that Neo's Semblance tricks people visually and can do a quick escape like Blake with her Shadows while Emerald's Semblance affects the brains for a certain amount of people. Moonslice: And you know disintegrate things with enough energy absorbed and use said energy for some ranged attacks outside his shtogun sheathe.
The thing with telekinesis is, the more powerful it is, the more things it can do and at a greater degree. Telekinesis at the atomic level for instance. It can turn into so much more than move an object.
@@JoybuzzerX true, again I believe Glynda's Telekinesis is an evolved and powerful one given what we've seen her do with it. It did look like she repaired the area where the Breach happened back in Vol 2 and the clip of her trying to repair a structure in Vol 3. So yeah Glynda has a powerful Telekinesis Semblance.
I think there’s a bit of a misconception: Cinder’s semblance is only to heat objects up, her manifesting weapons were due to the powers of the Fall Maiden that she took a while back since it runs on magic and not aura it’s not a part of it. James Ironwood’ semblance is not being stubborn but rather high mentality. It might sound useless to some but to a person like military soldiers this is a good ability to have because they won’t get ptsd in hard situations. Mercury’s semblance was activated with his legs. His father didn’t have the power to steal it, he crippled Mercury so badly that he got his legs amputated losing his semblance for good it seems.
Pretty much! like how Ironwood pulls his arm out of the trap that Arthur set, while the skin tears off his arm. Even Arthur was shocked that his semblance let him push through that.
A prequel to rwby would be really good. Yeah it wont have weiss and blake but id love to see how yang and ruby grew up and learned how to be huntress’ unlocked their semblance etc.
I love how each semblance reflects the character's personality. Ironwood = willing to make tough decisions Ruby = quick Weiss/Winter/Momma Schnee = hereditary semblance because she's driven by family Blake = mysterious Yang = fiery, jaune = wants to help Pyrra = magnetic personality Ren = hides his emotion, later lets them be seen Nora = electric personality Qrow = down on his luck Watts (unconfirmed) = utter savagery with words Marcus Black = takes lives (and can take Semblances, the manifestation of human soul) Mercury Black = has no soul (yet) Emerald = isn't what she seems, has a skewed perception of the world Hazel = has nothing left to hurt him Cinder Fall = her semblance represents the painful Scorching Caress of every family she's known Neopolitan = can be whatever she wants Adam = channels anything thrown at him, even non-lethally, into a deadly attack maria = thinks ahead
Weiss's glyphs don't actually do everything we see them do on their own; many of their effects like shooting ice crystals and affecting the flow of time are a result of combining her glyphs with dust, that she has a near-infinite amount of, apparently. Though her basic white glyphs do appear to be solid and able to be stood on top of, and don't seem to require dust to form. At least, that was what I'm pretty sure the early seasons established. They could have retcon'd it because it's RWBY and the retcons are plentiful.
@@Oreyee In the fight between Weiss, Yang, Flynt, and Neon, she also can shoot ice shards out of white glyphs, so I'm assuming white is just a color that can consume dust, and isn't necessarily only the "Default" glyph. I'm confident that black glyphs use gravity dust. Either way, I don't think we get a full explanation for which glyphs consume dust and which don't, because Weiss has never been short on dust throughout the series, and she barely ever turns the chambers on her weapon to signify that she's using a different kind. I would have hoped that Volume 5 onward, due to her running away in Volume 4, how much dust she had on hand would at least be brought up and become a thing, but we never hear about it. Though, I'd say it is quite possible that some white glyphs might have some kind of property to them that allows her to make things stick to them our bounce off of them. So, who knows exactly how they work?
If whitely summons his own glyphs than I think the main glyph he would use is the time manipulation glyph because with his father gone he needs the most time than anyone and would want her own sister to have more time as well so he could help others who have loved ones who are away or are gone permanently
I noticed that Cardin Winchester was pretty big in stature when he was bullying people, but when Juane saved him from the Ursa, he seemed to shrink. I suspect he grows in proportion to the size of his ego, and shrinks from humbleness. That would explain why he's such a butthead all the time. I think that these teams are the fighting elite that have the most combat friendly semblences. Beacon was a pretty big academy, so perhaps other students had more sedentary semblences, good enough for police work or accounting careers.
Am I the only one who noticed that RT kinda retconed Ruby's knowledge of her semblance? This past season Penny had to explain to her that she could use her semblance as a quick way to transport them through the atlas control center by applying it to them much to Ruby's surprise.......which is funny because ruby should already know this as she's already used her semblance on others not once but twice. The first time was in the first episode of season 4 during the fight with the geist where see her use it on Nora so she can deliver the killing blow. The second time was in the first episode of season 6 where she uses it on Weiss when they're on top the train as it heads for a tunnel, she uses it to ensure both she and Weiss are back within the train carts as they go through the tunnel. I'm curious, was this a forgetful error on their part or am I missing something? Maybe Penny was just explaining that she could use it on more than one person at a time? I don't wanna jump to conclusions but it seems like they forgot.
yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. I don't like the idea that Ruby herself didn't know her semblance much but I like to think she she just doesn't know it could work on multiple people orrrr she just did what she did the first couple times but doesn't know HOW it work really, just that she could do it. I don't know if I make sense.
i think its the method of use that was different, the ones during previous volumes involves her taking it into her dash (think like carrying someone while you run or like dragging someone along) thats why you see their colors mix in that state when she moves. But in volume 7 it doesnt hold onto someone and you don't see the multi color either. This is most heavily noticed too using volume 2 as reference where she struggles to move with penny (as of this point she was holding penny but was struggling as her "'mass" or well weight was not negated) but in vol 8 she moves penny without the struggles of that after being explained.
I think it's more like she's aware that her semblance evolving but she didn't know that she could do it with multiple people. She aware that she could split up herself into 2-3 parts back in volume 7 training, but she just kinda do it, not really thinking about the evolve. Yes, she did it to saved Weiss and used it with Nora back in volume 4, but they're in a dire situation, so perhaps she didn't think it that much. When your skill growing little by little, you might didn't noticed the change until you finally realized it or someone noticed it first.
The thing about Sun having to stand still when he uses his clones is not accurate. During the fight against the sea feilong, (sea serpent), he used his clones to launch himself higher, he didn't stand still. I think it depends on what he needs them to do.
Thank you for the Rhodes mention, I had thought it was metal control, but in a liquid type state. Like he simply covered his skin with metal that might’ve been concealed in a pocket of sorts near his arms/neck when he used it. Course though “Colossus of Rhodes,” should’ve given it away

Nora cant produce lightning. I am pretty sure she uses lightning dust in her hammer to charge up with. And she isn't immune to lightning damage. I think she is like a battery or a capacitor. Using that stored energy to become ridiculously strong for a brief period. But too much electricity can damage her and make out her aura.

Yes it is, it’s literally just determination, something that humans don’t need to commit to decisions. It’s really the most stupid and shoehorned in Semblance.
I think people are underplaying his semblance a bit, its not just extra determination, its complete hyperfocus and tunnel vision. Whatever decision his semblance activates on, he is incapable of thinking of anything else until he follows through. I imagine very helpful during missions but it can also be very damaging as he is unable to consider any other option.
@@chrissycurtis4152 I mean, that still seems less like a mystical power fueled by Aura and more like a mental disorder fueled by trauma. Like, when Ren uses his Semblance to affect his mental state, it has a visual effect and can also be spread to others while Ironwood just has no effect other than allegedly making him more determined. It doesn't bolster the determination of others, as far as we can see.
I want to see a character with all the semblances, they would be unstoppable! But using all those semblances at once would probably drain their aura to zero 😔

I don’t know why you think that. Personally I just think that Qrow’s “Semblance” is stupid. Luck is something unquantifiable, you can’t actually determine how bad or good your luck actually is, the things that happen around Qrow can just as easily be pure coincidences, and if we’re going off the idea that Semblances must be discovered than Qrow shouldn’t even be aware that it exists.
@@ryancarson6962 Its not that complicated, it can't make the impossible happen. But it does make things that are possible more probable. Why would he not be aware of it? There's a certain point in terms of things breaking on or around you specifically where you're going to be suspicious. His people certainly noticed and we even have people in real life superstitiously calling people jinxes, never mind in theirs with actual powers.

Some names of these semblances make no sense to what they actually do. Im not sure how accurate the names are. Or even if thats their true semblance. Like Iron Wood. I mean it makes sense but i feel his thick headedness is a product of stress and fear. Also he believes his actions are the best options. I just dont see a Aura fueling a state of mind. If thats the case then his fight with watts should have broke hus resolve and made him question his actions.
I would imagine myself to be in RWBY my semblance is Restraint which allows to prevent from being corrupted, mental breakdown, memory wiped, brainwashed, stress mind controlled, and everything else that can restrained. This also allows to restrain pain when I get hit so many times. To everyone: What is your semblance?
No, it's an inconsistency that could mean a few things. -The biggest one I've seen is you can't 'negate mass' as it would defy some fundamental laws of physics, namely the law of conservation of mass. By this law Ruby only alters heres and others forms, allowing her to propel the mass outside of her normal body's limitations. Unfortunately this.... doesn't work with Penny's canon explanation. The sort of flaw in this argument is that this isn't the first time some basic physics principle has been broken because of how Yang's semblance works. Burn absorbs the kinetic energy taken and outputs at double what it was, literally the phrase 'if someone hits you, hit them back twice as hard' The problem with this is that doubling energy has to come from somewhere according to physics, energy isn't spontaneously created, it is converted from another form always. By this we can say that semblances are capable of ignoring the laws of physics and Ruby can negate her mass, mercury kicking her is the writers forgot Mercury kicked her that one time when writing the explanation -The easiest explanation is when Penny said mass, she meant weight.The words are often use interchangeably, but they don't actually mean the same thing. Weight is your Mass times the acceleration of gravity where you are. Theoretically if Ruby is capable of altering how much gravity affects her (gravity dust exists, so why not) she would be able to reduce her own weight, making herself lighter and able to move faster using her same momentum. Her mass would remain unchanged, because it has nothing to do with gravity. It also means she can be hit in this form because she still has mass.
i dont think she was every really immune, she was just able to channel it, and when she hit that lightning dust, because she didn't immediately start using it to enhance her strength or speed it started to damage her. In the fight in Vol. 3 she took to lightning bolt and the sped down the mountain and smacked the hell out of that one dude, where as in Vol 7(8?) She starts taking it and holds it in.
I don't think Neo materialises anything, it's all illusion. Though the one thing that stumps me with her semblance is how people still feel the impact when her 'clone' strikes and 'shatters'.

I could be 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗬 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 since we don't know a whole lot about Neo, but I don't think Neo teleports as such, but rather makes it appear she is in one place, but she is actually in another place. and since she is so agile, it plays into the illusion that she is teleporting around and shattering 'clones'. Even that scene when she 'teleports' away from Raven, that could easily be an illusion of herself while the real self escapes via a different route. (almost feigning invisibility for a short time?) We also see this same kinda thing in the Cinder fight when she fights in the tavern, but reappears outside in a completely different spot. This theory also fits into how Neo works in the fighting game BlazBlue Crosstag battle, although some abilities do physically make her teleport, it still fits the idea that she isn't really teleporting, but travelling from point A to point B in a way that the opponent can't track or interact with her. Hopefully we'll learn more about Neo in the coming volume 9! As she is now stuck in the same mystery 'zone' as the rest of the cast! :D
I have to disagree with most people on jaune i dont think aura amp is his semblance because on a basic level its just aura manipulation which pyra does to unlock his aura back in volume one my theroy is everyone is able to manipulate aura but it uses up ur like how pura got tired after unlocking jaunes aura and just ike jaune he heys tired after it to but lasts longer because he has alot of aura

This makes me think she has a resistance to electricity, she'll still take damage but it's lessened since she's channeling it through her to amplify her strength and attacks.

As for the resistance but still damage, I think she's just fully immune. When she got shocked in the Vital tournament, she just stood there and grinned, and Ruby hit her with a high-impact sniper shot without doing her any serious harm.
@@Oreyee She's not immune to the effects of electricity, but it definitely takes WAY more to have a negative effect on her. She's out for hours in volume 8 after absorbing the charge from the security door in ep 3.

Nora may not be able to channel Alternating Current {AC current, commonly used in industry and households} in the amounts and as well as she can channel Direct Current {DC current, like the current your body uses in your nerves and muscles}. DC current is the type of current contained in lightening, and why it can be survivable. The voltages are in the millions, but the amperage is relatively low. The amperage in AC current is relatively high, and it stops normal electrical activity in your body's muscles, like your heart. That's why your house appliances can kill you with AC current, while your car normally won't with it's low voltage DC current. Highly powered AC current, like in power lines, is especially deadly. That barrier in the Atlas control center could have been more AC current than Nora could safely handle, as it also caused the scars on her body.

Most relatable semblance
it was revealed in the latest episode that Qrow's semblance is actually fortune, but his outlook on life is what makes it good or bad luck. Qrow has been hurting for a long time and he's convinced his semblance is bad luck, so bad luck happens but when he finally had hope during season 8 his semblence activated on the good luck side and stopped the bomb from falling out of the ship and saved mantle for a bit longer that way.

My personal theory is that Qrow has probability manipulation, which shifts depending on his mindset. He was probably born with a pessimistic outlook on life so his semblance manifested into misfortune. But remembering Clover and choosing to be optimistic for the first time caused his semblance to shift into good fortune.

Something that isn't something talked very much about Semblances is the meaning behind them or how represent the characters's personalities.
For example, Pyrrah's *Polarity* is her wish to keep people close to her yet keeping at certain distance (or simply pushing then away. Yang's *Burn* represent her willing to take damage to protect her friends or family.
I feel like Semblances spawn off of trauma, that's why they are like the characters. Jaune's appeared when Weiss was close to dying and it wasn't just by chance that he had the ability to amplify her aura to heal her ya know? Also not really a chance Ren got tranquility when he needed to keep hidden from grim. Nora got hit by lightning and her semblance was unlocked there too. Its a pattern i appreciate

Similarly, clovers and qrows are lightly hinted to be *identical*, and simply a matter of direction via perception. Qrow sees his as "bad luck", and therefore it tends to manifest that way, whereas clover saw his as "good luck", and as such vice versa. The new season kinda confirmed that as he tapped clovers badge right before a bout of "good luck".
Semblances can also evolve and change. Ruby's went from a single-direction dash to a adjustable dash, noticeably after failing to arrive in time to save phyyra.
Other personality-semblances are Blake "leaving scapegoats" for herself, not directly blaming others for her own problems, but more... running away and letting others take the fall, Adam's similar yet more toxic "It wasn't me it was you" personality manifesting as his reflecting damage via moonslice, nora's energy being... electric, weiss's family being overly structured and expected to fit into a pre-determined mold, Raven's complex "I care but I am ashamed of caring" manifesting as the "everyone gets one" save approach. Can't think of many more off the top of my head, but that hits a fair few of the main cast.
I like to think that ruby got her semblance during training with qrow. Like qrow was drunk in one of rubys training sessions and got carried away with an attack so ruby unlocked her semblance so she could dodge the attack.

I don't know about that. Cinder loves to exploit the desire to protect one's allies. She knocks Jaune down at some point in the battle, Pyrrah charges Cinder, Cinder points blades at Jaune, then deals a fatal blow to Pyrrah when she tries to save Jaune.
While I love the idea, Jaune didn't have his semblance unlocked during the Fall of Beacon. He unlocked it during the battle at Haven when Weiss got injured. Still though, maybe seeing Pyrrha get shot in the ankle/chest would've unlocked it then, but then your looking at Rubys eyes not activating.

Velvets semblance name is called mimicry as she can mimic any fighting style she has seen. This is why she has a camera and Photobox. She takes a picture the photobox stores it and uses the image to produce hardlight dust weapons. Doing this destroys the image. Thats why Coco tells her not to waste it during the attack on Vail in season 2.

@@Sin_cities If you look at Velvet right before she attacks in 0.25 speed, she just jumps above the paladin. Faunus in RWBY seem to have more enhanced features in comparison to the humans in the show, ie, having a higher natural jump, being naturally fast and landing easier.
I made sure to check because at a quick glance it does seem like velvet uses Petal Burst, but it's just her jumping above the paladin in the fight

I know I'm 2 months late but I didn't see any other comments address this. I'm pretty sure Weiss's semblance has only two abilities. Summoning and manipulating momentum through glyphs. All the extra things she does with them is her combining her glyphs with dust.

On the topic of Qrow ... with him focusing on the "Clover Pin" he can voluntarly stop his bad luck for a limited time and while in deep concentration. Maybe his semblance will evolve to be able to be controlled and focused in the future ... and maybe he could even make a void of karma that can store good luck and then release the void and have a short burst of luck for that person, object or location.
The only things the Schnee family's Glyph semblance seem to be able to do on their own is to create solid glyph platforms that can support weight, and call upon any Grimm they've slain to summon as allies. All other applications require various types of Dust to use - gravity dust creates the black glyphs that can push and pull stuff, lightning dust creates the time dilation effect she uses on Blake in V2 and on herself several other times, and her blue and red glyphs she uses to launch ice and fire attacks use the same types of dust accordingly. This kind of implies to me that dust can actually be combined with a number of semblances to create elemental effects, but Weiss is the only character besides Hazel who actually uses it as a key piece of their fighting style since her status and resources actually allow her to replenish her stores pretty easily and it pairs well with her glyphs in the first place.
I wonder what other combinations could be created by combining semblances and dust?
Glyphs is one of my favorite semblances because of how well it works within the context of the shows magic system. Semblances grow and develop as they are used which is why glyphs is so versatile, it has been developed over generations. I also think the semblance isn't exactly hereditary, but because the Schnee family name is so prominent in the children's lives they inherit the semblance as well. One of the most well written ones imo
Edit: Thinking more about it this is also why her semblance works so well with dust. Man glyphs is hands down my favorite they really popped off with that one.
Agreed, I almost want to see Weiss's semblance evolve further to represent the formation into her own person, separate from the rest of the Schnee family. (a little bit like how Uchiha's in Naruto have the same general abilities, but manifest them individually as they become their own person)

1: I don’t think Whitley will get the glyphs, considering his experience with his own family. His father was abusive, his mother was neglectful, and his sisters abandoned him. Since the glyphs remind me of full metal alchemist, maybe his semblance will be the opposite. Born out of a desire to show his family that he’s done being a part of it.
2: My head cannon is that crow got his semblance from the guilt of being labelled a “bad luck charm” by his tribe. Likely being blamed for a member’s death.

Actually semblances can evolve depending on how much someone changes personally. Ozpin explains this in Volume 5 while training Ruby. Won't be drastic, but subtle. Ren's for example.

I think one thing you misinterpreted with Misfortune and Mettle is that they're passive, not random. Both of them are always on once they're triggered. If Qrow's is triggered when he's wary, then it will keep going until he feels safe.
On the other hand, Mettle allows Ironwood to hyperfocus until his intend goal is met. The problem is, Mettle won't deactivate until said goal is met which has led to Ironwood's decision in recent episodes- Mettle is in overdrive and it will not switch off until the goal 'protect Atlas' is met
Rose* Petal Burst: I personally see Ruby's Semblance first starting off as a standard Super Speed Semblance at the beginning of the show with a few times of its true nature popping up such as her ending the food fight against Team JNPR and it evolving after Vol 3 to its true form. Since it's stated that Semblances evolve over time, similar to how a hero with super strength will be stronger as an adult than as a teen when they first got it. Ruby's Semblance definitely seems like it has the potential to become the most video game like Semblance, i.e. doing video game mechanics, such as double jumping, changing outfits quickly and reloading like a Hunter from Destiny 2.
Glyphs: At its base form Glyphs mostly act like platforms to either block attacks or add mobility for Weiss in battle such as the clip shown where she used them to bounce around Flint in Vol 3 like a pinball. The Summons are actually the defeated foes of Weiss, so in a way that makes her and anyone with this Semblance a necromancer, even though Grimm aren't really considered as living creatures. The Time Dilation/Speed Boost is actually a result of Weiss using Lighting Dust with her Glyphs, which is one of the reasons her weapon, Myrtenaster has a rotating Dust Chamber similar to a revolver, gives her elemental options and special changes to her Glyphs.
Aura Amp: The limitations of Jaune's Semblance is mostly his own storage of Aura. It's a mix of Amping up a peron's Semblance to do more with it and him acting as a tank of Aura for them to use. Think Aura as shields from Halo, healing potions and a Mana bar all in one. It helps a Huntsman survive attacks that would kill normal people, heal an injury faster and allows one to use their Semblance, so either action will drain it faster or slower depending on a situation. Jaune has a large amount of Aura to help out a friend who needs the boost but he currently needs to physically touch them to give them the boost, keep up the boost and depending on the situation needed for the Semblance such as with Ren's to keep a large crowd of civilians safe from Grimm, he could use up all of his Aura and has to wait for it to regenerate.
High Voltage: Glad you mentioned she can generate electricity as well but not fully explaining that her Semblance acts similar in nature to Yang's in that it makes her physically stronger as well.
Glide: I mean, they all can't be winners and considering his allusion, it makes sense.
Hype: Yeah very straight forward with her Semblance.
Velvet: She's basically Taskmaster from Marvel but without the drawback of losing a random memory from learning new moves and the Dust she uses is called Hardlight Dust, which also requires her to take pictures of weapons to copy them.
Telekinesis: Also apparently repair structures as well since I believe she did that to the plaza(?) where the Breached happened in Vol 2 and trying to do that at the end of Vol 3.
Kindred Link: Biological Mother is a better title for her.
Mettle: Again not all winners.
Stay: It also seems like if the target(s) are in a rather fast motion its a difficult task for him especially if they are a physical strong person.

Cinder: That's a tricky one because she did get a CERTIAN boost in Vol 3 so it's more likely she's using that power instead of her own Semblance, given her need for power. Although easy to tell she's using that power fully after Vol 3 but it wouldn't be impossible she would use her Semblance to be subtle.
Neo and Emerald: Basic difference between them is that Neo's Semblance tricks people visually and can do a quick escape like Blake with her Shadows while Emerald's Semblance affects the brains for a certain amount of people.
Moonslice: And you know disintegrate things with enough energy absorbed and use said energy for some ranged attacks outside his shtogun sheathe.
The thing with telekinesis is, the more powerful it is, the more things it can do and at a greater degree.
Telekinesis at the atomic level for instance.
It can turn into so much more than move an object.
@@JoybuzzerX true, again I believe Glynda's Telekinesis is an evolved and powerful one given what we've seen her do with it. It did look like she repaired the area where the Breach happened back in Vol 2 and the clip of her trying to repair a structure in Vol 3. So yeah Glynda has a powerful Telekinesis Semblance.
I think there’s a bit of a misconception: Cinder’s semblance is only to heat objects up, her manifesting weapons were due to the powers of the Fall Maiden that she took a while back since it runs on magic and not aura it’s not a part of it. James Ironwood’ semblance is not being stubborn but rather high mentality. It might sound useless to some but to a person like military soldiers this is a good ability to have because they won’t get ptsd in hard situations. Mercury’s semblance was activated with his legs. His father didn’t have the power to steal it, he crippled Mercury so badly that he got his legs amputated losing his semblance for good it seems.

I'd call Yang's "Back fire". As she literally gives back 2 as much as she takes.
Weiss's glyphs don't actually do everything we see them do on their own; many of their effects like shooting ice crystals and affecting the flow of time are a result of combining her glyphs with dust, that she has a near-infinite amount of, apparently. Though her basic white glyphs do appear to be solid and able to be stood on top of, and don't seem to require dust to form.
At least, that was what I'm pretty sure the early seasons established. They could have retcon'd it because it's RWBY and the retcons are plentiful.
I'm pretty sure Weiss's glyphs mess with gravity. Watch the Nevermore fight in season one: White glyphs pull, black glyphs push.
@@Oreyee In the fight between Weiss, Yang, Flynt, and Neon, she also can shoot ice shards out of white glyphs, so I'm assuming white is just a color that can consume dust, and isn't necessarily only the "Default" glyph. I'm confident that black glyphs use gravity dust.
Either way, I don't think we get a full explanation for which glyphs consume dust and which don't, because Weiss has never been short on dust throughout the series, and she barely ever turns the chambers on her weapon to signify that she's using a different kind. I would have hoped that Volume 5 onward, due to her running away in Volume 4, how much dust she had on hand would at least be brought up and become a thing, but we never hear about it.

If whitely summons his own glyphs than I think the main glyph he would use is the time manipulation glyph because with his father gone he needs the most time than anyone and would want her own sister to have more time as well so he could help others who have loved ones who are away or are gone permanently
I noticed that Cardin Winchester was pretty big in stature when he was bullying people, but when Juane saved him from the Ursa, he seemed to shrink. I suspect he grows in proportion to the size of his ego, and shrinks from humbleness. That would explain why he's such a butthead all the time.
I think that these teams are the fighting elite that have the most combat friendly semblences. Beacon was a pretty big academy, so perhaps other students had more sedentary semblences, good enough for police work or accounting careers.
Weisses glyphs are pretty consistent. They create platforms that can either increase or decrease momentum. And she can summon.

Am I the only one who noticed that RT kinda retconed Ruby's knowledge of her semblance? This past season Penny had to explain to her that she could use her semblance as a quick way to transport them through the atlas control center by applying it to them much to Ruby's surprise.......which is funny because ruby should already know this as she's already used her semblance on others not once but twice. The first time was in the first episode of season 4 during the fight with the geist where see her use it on Nora so she can deliver the killing blow. The second time was in the first episode of season 6 where she uses it on Weiss when they're on top the train as it heads for a tunnel, she uses it to ensure both she and Weiss are back within the train carts as they go through the tunnel. I'm curious, was this a forgetful error on their part or am I missing something? Maybe Penny was just explaining that she could use it on more than one person at a time? I don't wanna jump to conclusions but it seems like they forgot.
yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. I don't like the idea that Ruby herself didn't know her semblance much but I like to think she she just doesn't know it could work on multiple people orrrr she just did what she did the first couple times but doesn't know HOW it work really, just that she could do it. I don't know if I make sense.
i think its the method of use that was different, the ones during previous volumes involves her taking it into her dash (think like carrying someone while you run or like dragging someone along) thats why you see their colors mix in that state when she moves. But in volume 7 it doesnt hold onto someone and you don't see the multi color either. This is most heavily noticed too using volume 2 as reference where she struggles to move with penny (as of this point she was holding penny but was struggling as her "'mass" or well weight was not negated) but in vol 8 she moves penny without the struggles of that after being explained.
I think it's more like she's aware that her semblance evolving but she didn't know that she could do it with multiple people. She aware that she could split up herself into 2-3 parts back in volume 7 training, but she just kinda do it, not really thinking about the evolve. Yes, she did it to saved Weiss and used it with Nora back in volume 4, but they're in a dire situation, so perhaps she didn't think it that much. When your skill growing little by little, you might didn't noticed the change until you finally realized it or someone noticed it first.

The thing about Sun having to stand still when he uses his clones is not accurate. During the fight against the sea feilong, (sea serpent), he used his clones to launch himself higher, he didn't stand still. I think it depends on what he needs them to do.
Thank you for the Rhodes mention, I had thought it was metal control, but in a liquid type state. Like he simply covered his skin with metal that might’ve been concealed in a pocket of sorts near his arms/neck when he used it. Course though “Colossus of Rhodes,” should’ve given it away

Nora cant produce lightning. I am pretty sure she uses lightning dust in her hammer to charge up with. And she isn't immune to lightning damage. I think she is like a battery or a capacitor. Using that stored energy to become ridiculously strong for a brief period. But too much electricity can damage her and make out her aura.

I think people are underplaying his semblance a bit, its not just extra determination, its complete hyperfocus and tunnel vision. Whatever decision his semblance activates on, he is incapable of thinking of anything else until he follows through. I imagine very helpful during missions but it can also be very damaging as he is unable to consider any other option.

Like, when Ren uses his Semblance to affect his mental state, it has a visual effect and can also be spread to others while Ironwood just has no effect other than allegedly making him more determined. It doesn't bolster the determination of others, as far as we can see.

I don’t know why you think that. Personally I just think that Qrow’s “Semblance” is stupid. Luck is something unquantifiable, you can’t actually determine how bad or good your luck actually is, the things that happen around Qrow can just as easily be pure coincidences, and if we’re going off the idea that Semblances must be discovered than Qrow shouldn’t even be aware that it exists.

Why would he not be aware of it? There's a certain point in terms of things breaking on or around you specifically where you're going to be suspicious. His people certainly noticed and we even have people in real life superstitiously calling people jinxes, never mind in theirs with actual powers.

Some names of these semblances make no sense to what they actually do. Im not sure how accurate the names are. Or even if thats their true semblance. Like Iron Wood. I mean it makes sense but i feel his thick headedness is a product of stress and fear. Also he believes his actions are the best options. I just dont see a Aura fueling a state of mind. If thats the case then his fight with watts should have broke hus resolve and made him question his actions.

No, it's an inconsistency that could mean a few things.
-The biggest one I've seen is you can't 'negate mass' as it would defy some fundamental laws of physics, namely the law of conservation of mass. By this law Ruby only alters heres and others forms, allowing her to propel the mass outside of her normal body's limitations. Unfortunately this.... doesn't work with Penny's canon explanation. The sort of flaw in this argument is that this isn't the first time some basic physics principle has been broken because of how Yang's semblance works. Burn absorbs the kinetic energy taken and outputs at double what it was, literally the phrase 'if someone hits you, hit them back twice as hard' The problem with this is that doubling energy has to come from somewhere according to physics, energy isn't spontaneously created, it is converted from another form always.
By this we can say that semblances are capable of ignoring the laws of physics and Ruby can negate her mass, mercury kicking her is the writers forgot Mercury kicked her that one time when writing the explanation
-The easiest explanation is when Penny said mass, she meant weight.The words are often use interchangeably, but they don't actually mean the same thing. Weight is your Mass times the acceleration of gravity where you are. Theoretically if Ruby is capable of altering how much gravity affects her (gravity dust exists, so why not) she would be able to reduce her own weight, making herself lighter and able to move faster using her same momentum. Her mass would remain unchanged, because it has nothing to do with gravity. It also means she can be hit in this form because she still has mass.
Maybe Ruby didn't evolve her semblance enough at that point. Or yeah it could just be an inconsistency.

nora originally was immune to lighting
i dont think she was every really immune, she was just able to channel it, and when she hit that lightning dust, because she didn't immediately start using it to enhance her strength or speed it started to damage her. In the fight in Vol. 3 she took to lightning bolt and the sped down the mountain and smacked the hell out of that one dude, where as in Vol 7(8?) She starts taking it and holds it in.

I don't think Neo materialises anything, it's all illusion. Though the one thing that stumps me with her semblance is how people still feel the impact when her 'clone' strikes and 'shatters'.

How did Neo teleport easily? 😮 I thought it was just changing her image and objects like illusion
I could be 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗬 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 since we don't know a whole lot about Neo, but I don't think Neo teleports as such, but rather makes it appear she is in one place, but she is actually in another place. and since she is so agile, it plays into the illusion that she is teleporting around and shattering 'clones'.
Even that scene when she 'teleports' away from Raven, that could easily be an illusion of herself while the real self escapes via a different route. (almost feigning invisibility for a short time?)
We also see this same kinda thing in the Cinder fight when she fights in the tavern, but reappears outside in a completely different spot.
This theory also fits into how Neo works in the fighting game BlazBlue Crosstag battle, although some abilities do physically make her teleport, it still fits the idea that she isn't really teleporting, but travelling from point A to point B in a way that the opponent can't track or interact with her.
Hopefully we'll learn more about Neo in the coming volume 9! As she is now stuck in the same mystery 'zone' as the rest of the cast! :D

I have to disagree with most people on jaune i dont think aura amp is his semblance because on a basic level its just aura manipulation which pyra does to unlock his aura back in volume one my theroy is everyone is able to manipulate aura but it uses up ur like how pura got tired after unlocking jaunes aura and just ike jaune he heys tired after it to but lasts longer because he has alot of aura
