I am almost 70 years old. Back in the day all homes had a pantry off the kitchen with at least 5 or 6 shelves. Mother’s and Grandma’s were expected to be practical and thrifty. Many also sewed their families clothes and knitted. Gardening and canning were useful skills. It’s a shame many of us forget to learn how.

I’m 56 years old and learned a lot from my grandma who went thru the Great Depression and ww2 rationings. My kids know how to garden and prep. Sadly though, the younger adults ages 20-40 particularly are clueless. They don’t have the survival skills outside of playing video games 🤦🏼‍♀️

MY LIFE FULL OF HOPE 👋🏾
Research using your Insta pot 👆🏽 up there👀for canning sis! Hey can i use a pressure cooker for canning?
Any pressure cooker can be used for canning even the fancy electric ones. The science is very basic. ... Instant Pot can be used for boiling-water canning. However, Instant Pot has not been tested for food safety in pressure canning by USDA. ☺️Hey sis I fellowship at Hebrew Nation building on UA-cam you should check them out sometime! 👋🏾

    • @danniemcdonald4903
      @danniemcdonald4903 3 роки тому +11

@@chanf4 Actually, a pressure COOKER should not be used as a pressure CANNER, since it can not produce and maintain enough consistent pressure. As for using an Instant Pot being used to water bath, I don't believe it can maintain a rolling boil needed to properly (and safely) preserve food. As you say, research some credible canning sites or check with your local Extension office/agent.

There are a few scary comments on here in reference to canning food. Canning needs to be taken seriously as botulism is deadly. Everyone, please do not assume that everyone on UA-cam knows what they are doing or talking about. Do your homework from certified sources. Please purchase the "newest Ball canning book" to add to your preps resource materials or go to one of the certified university websites etc. and print out proper canning procedures. Know your altitude for the area you live in so you know how many pounds of pressure to can. Low acid vegetables need to be pressure canned. You have to kill both botulism and the spores. Please practice safe canning procedures. Your family's life depends on it. ☮

The Bible tells us to prepare. The Proverbs 31 woman is prepared. I hope this inspires Americans to be wise and prepare. We are to use our common sense and prepare for possible tough days. Our grandparents used to store extra food to be wise. We've lost alot of their prudence and wisdom. We pray that we never need it. But should any adversity come our way, we will be okay. Smart people learn from the past and think of the future.

You are doing a great job with your prepping! Good for you!
I have a couple of suggestions for you, just in case you or your subscribers are interested:
    1. You can get the 2 gallon sized zip loc bags at the dollar tree to help with zipping larger items for short term storage.
    2. SAM'S Club has shelving units. Target does as well, as you said. I have one of each of those two. They are very sturdy and I use some paperboard over the shelves to keep cans from toppling over. I really like what you did with the press board, though and will try and do that!
    3. My husband did attach both units to the walls, screwing them into studs behind the sheetrock. Any type shelving units can become very heavy depending what and where on the unit you are organizing certain goods.
    4. I have begun to save our 2 liter empty soda/pop bottles, as they are emptied. I rinse them with bleach, wash with hot soapy water and rinse very well. Then, I fill them with regular tap water. It will remain drinkable for quite some time, but if nothing else, I can use it to help flush toilets or wash dishes. One prepper showed where she repurposed the bottles to temporarily store dry goods in. Just make sure they are thoroughly dry before filling them. A funnel helps a lot. Lol Flours, Sugars, Oats, Rice, Instant Potatoes, etc can be stored in this manner.
    5. The 5 gallon food storage safe buckets are at Walmart and are less than 5 dollars. You have to buy the lids separately. I'm starting to get the gamma lids to use instead of the regular lids because of convenience. You will want to get a bucket opener tool to help open the non-gamma lids. They are easily picked up at Lowes in the paint department.
    5. Baking soda can be purchased at Walmart in a great big bag in the pool section, especially now in the summer. They are also available at Sam's Club year round. There are many uses for baking soda in the house other than as a leavening agent when baking-I put a half to 1 cup in each load of laundry to soften the water -makes your laundry detergent work soo much better!
*** I hope these little tips are helpful. Thank you so much for taking the extensive time and effort in order to share your knowledge with others! I look forward to viewing your other videos in your playlist. You are a true inspiration!

My BF was skeptical at the beginning but quickly got on board. When the pandemic hit, he definitely was happy we had extras of certain things because we didn't have to go fight the crowds for TP! Keep up the great work.

For my wife & I, we have 300 lbs. of rice in one-gallon sized Mylar bags, with O2 absorbents, sealed with her hair iron, in 30 gallon-sized galvanized garbage cans. We keep our honey in pint-sized glass Mason jars. Honey will never spoil. We keep our macaroni noodles and egg noodles in half-gallon-sized glass Mason jars. We keep heirloom seeds in our chest freezer. Years ago, we got one hundred and fifty pounds of potatoes, peeled, diced and pressure canned them in quart-sized glass Mason jars. Those canned potatoes lasted the two of us for five years, 2013 to 2018. We got a bushel of peaches when they were in season one year and pressure canned them in pint-sized glass Mason jars. Great stash of provisions if you ever need them. We have a vacuum sealer that we vacuum seal our rices, noodles, cereals, etc.. Also containers with lids the vacuum sealer connects to to seal the reusable container. Last winter I opened a package of cereal I vacuum sealed in 2010 in anticipation of throwing it out. It was as fresh as the day I sealed it !!. I only saw 1 container of honey on your shelf. Honey keeps forever and if times get ugly will satisfy a sweet tooth. Can make many things with it. Take cereal out of box and cut a slit in bag. Put appropriate oxygen absorber and seal with flat iron. I tear off top flap that has date and name of cereal and tape on outside. I still have 12 packs left. Works great. I do saltines and goldfish crackers too. Be sure to do research on proper storage of stuff in buckets. You have a terrific start. Sams does a great store brand toilet paper. In my area it is 45 big rolls for $20 + tax.

I've tried so many toilet paper. Charmin (not ultra) lasts longest. I believe Scott did last a long time too but guests didn't like it lol I think a mega roll of charmin lasts my family of 3 for 4 days. 🤷‍♀️ not bad at all

Teresa peacock, I get those moths too. Best to freeze the item 10 days, then store or else they will just be in your storage container

Amazing pantry and organization! Plus, it helps to have extra when others need help. You’ve got me reconsidering using the space in my guest room for storage (no basement, smallish house). Thanks for sharing!

You are awesome! I admire what you have accomplished for your family. I have a stockpile, and appreciate some ideas you gave me. I especially need to get some containers for dry items like flour and sugar. I smiled when you mentioned your husband bc I’m married to a Luttrell, too. Im going to follow you.

Suggestions: add allergy & cold medication. Pick up extra personal hygiene products. First aid kit. A lot more water. Do a little at a time. $20-50 per month. 1 gallon of water per person is recommended. That’s just for drinking.

I have that metal rack and I got mine at aldi 4 years ago for $35. I use mine for storing kitchen small appliances. I have been stocking up for the last 6 months.

Your stock pile is about the size of mine. I just began doing this in April 2020. I’m also preparing bug out bags for us and my daughter and her family.

Maybe it would be helpful to keep laminated printouts of your inventory tagged to your shelves system and get those clear can good holders (acrylic dispensers) so that you can save more space by them being able to lay on its side and just roll out when you need it, and label containers.

We like to slice spam and bake it in the oven until its starts to get crispy on the edges. Then we put bbq sauce on them and bake a little longer. Yum.
