      But it kind of destroys the story and plot, suspense and intrigue, having Robin Hood reduced to some kind of invincible super hero. Not to mention the logical breach of the guy opposing random execution of enemy soldiers, to allow himself being turned into an equally random killing machine, and that against his own country and former friends in arms (SPOILER ALERT: he doesn`t learn about the treason of the sheriff and the church until long after he has started his terrorism - and therefore believed he was helping the enemy. Not until the papers discovered by Marion and Tuck did he learn the truth about what the tax money was for).

      @@hashaborgonja Not really. If they had gone with any other kind of name, you'd probably liked it more, despite its obvious modern flaws in storytelling. But they used a well known movie title to make you expect something and then did a bait and switch and gave you something else. Which ticked you off twice - once, because it's not what was promised, and 2nd time because it couldn't even succeed by its own logic. If they made this like Priest, for example, or Legion, it might be able to stand on its own; but they want to cash in on the "Robin Hood" name. Also, focuses on public domain characters means you can literally butcher the original story in any way you want to without having to pay licensing fees, face any limiting clauses and/or have to adhere to any previous installments/retellings' conventions.

      That much was obvious with the leather jacket the Sheriff Of Nottingham was wearing, which they wouldn't have been able to make in that time period and the tunics that looked like flak jackets and the battle sequences from The Crusades that looked more like they came straight out of an Iraq War movie. It was a bizarre, fun movie that made no pretenses to be anything even bordering near historically accurate but Robin Hood is in the public domain and as such, the legend can be interpreted this way or ANY way, really.

    I'm surprised cbr didn't mention the similarity between this robin hood and last year's king arthur movie, which did not perform well at the box office. I suspect that the robin hood movie won't do very well either.

    • @JR-ju3kj
      @JR-ju3kj 5 років тому

      I always say that I think both Robin Hood and King Arthur are over-used and over-exposed public domain characters. There are literally HUNDREDS of characters in the public domain free for anyone to use as they see fit and yet, Hollywood keeps recycling the same public domain properties over and over again. I want to write books and comics and I don't think that I would ever write a book or comic about Robin Hood or King Arthur because I just wouldn't see the point. But I would, however, use an obscure and little-known public domain character, which is exactly what I plan to do with writing a graphic novel about a public domain Super Hero called ''The Clock''.
      There is just a treasure trove of material in the public domain for people to mine from but Hollywood(and many authors, too, who have written books about King Arthur and Robin Hood) doesn't seem to understand that, if they did, they wouldn't keep going back to the same public domain characters.

    I loved this movie. Most complaints stem from teh fact that it's not "historically accurate". Who cares? They said it wasn't going to be historically accurate. It's an artistic redesign of the tale for modern times and it's rather good if you can put away your snob glasses.

      I wouldn't call it brilliant but you're certainly entitled to your own opinion and I will say that I did enjoy it and thought that it was a fun action movie.
      As far as the artistic license, Robin Hood is in the public domain, so people are free to interpret and re-imagine the legend any way they want to. If they wanted to set it in modern times or even in the future, they still could have done that.

      Next Robin Hood movie: Robin, a PoC noblewoman living in Africa, goes to attack evil white sheriff of Belgium in a poor village nearby, serving as his base of operations for tax collection... yeah, I'm probably not far off in that regard, if you look at what movies currently try to message (and fail at, horribly). It seems that we always end up with dud movies? o.0

      The UK 2006 tv series, with Jonas Armstrong playing Robin, is the best there has been.

    • @take2productions570
      @take2productions570 5 років тому +1

      @@Tvjunkieful12 That one sucks, it forces odd unrealistic diversity, Armstrong is nothing like Robin hood, and the series feels like a parody of Robin hood rather than an actual show about him. The best version I have seen was the 84' series starring Michael Praed

    • @Tvjunkieful12
      @Tvjunkieful12 5 років тому

      @@take2productions570 Haven`t seen that one. But the one with Armstrong had both humor and story, and the setting was also more realistic to what it would have been in that time periode, when normally castles, fortresses and churches were the only buildings built in stone. Houses, barns and more - even bridges - were built by wood. Poor people`s houses built with a mixture of straws with dirt and clay mixed into them. I also, having had some experience with writing for broadcasting myself, found many of the individual episodes very well written and mapped out story-wise. Offering just the right mixture of genres, from suspense and mystery, to romance, comedy and action to satisfy a large segment of the youth audience of both sexes. That the recipe works, the series Merlin, which followed not long after, proved convincingly - running almost as long as the Robin Hood series ran. So even if it wasn`t to your taste, I don`t think it is fair to say the series sucked - factoring how long it ran for, how many countries around the world that aired it and how the recipe has been attempted copied repeatedly since. that series was a smash hit, and same with the Merlin one ITV made. Demons and Atlantis, which tried to tap into the same demographic groups, were not equally successful, repeating the recipe.
      In my opinion because despite both Christian Cooke and Eddie Redmayne being more than capable actors, and filling their roles brilliantly, where those two series failed was that neither the overall story and setting, nor individual episodes worked very well - resulting in fewer viewers getting hooked, and feeling the show to be a must a see for them. Like it was with both Jonas Armstrong`s Robin Hood and the Merlin series.

      Step away from the silly history and you easily get into scrumy territory like: So the arab slave-trade was more far reaching and for far longer than the one we are told about(American slaves)? The slave trade was sponsored by jewish trade houses and they made alot of coin participating in it solidifying their future generations wealth that we still see today?!? Thats anti-semitic! the 2018 version was great and I loved it but I can see why not everyone loves this version this version could have gone better for alot of reason but in my opinion its not because of how the city look or how Robin was dress or even how those people at the party were dress either its more like how the story went like Robin being lord of his own house he looks so young in this version he should still have had his parents if they had a few significant differences to this film maybe this movie would have got better reviews like if I wrote This version as a book I would have wrote this Jamie Dornan character is not Will Scarlet but Robin's twin cousin name Connor who the Son of Robin's Uncle who the brother of Robin's mother that's right if I wrote this as a book Robin will be living with his mother and not alone so if I wrote this as a book he would have his mother and also to make more fascinating I would have had his neighborhood look like the Shire from Lord of the Rings and his house looks like Bag End AKA Frodo's house but big enough for big people not just Hobbits and Robin and Connor are very close they go fishing together play hide and seek together and jump a fence and get into so much trouble together they could be like Marry and Pippin and hang out in a tavern when there parents are out drinking and Marion could be a Orphan Robin discovers and he and his mom takes her in.
    and also I wouldn't have had Jamie Foxx character be Little John and I would have had his character Hispanic instead of the war Robin was in being in Arabia I would have had it in Spain and Jamie Foxx's character could have been played by a Mexican actor like Antonio Banderas or Diego Luna or the actor name Gael Garcia Bernal and another idea I had is that Robin Hood is not selected to go out the war he's captured and sent into it the sheriff wants to buy Robin's house but his mother refuses it sell to him he finds out that Robin and his cousin go out to meet by the lake or the woods when they go out to play when he see them meet at a Tavern he lures Robin into a trap he has one of his men write a note on the front door of Robin's house saying it's from his cousin Connor invite him to go fishing with him and Robin goes down to the lake he's ambushed by soldiers and knocked out he wakes up on a boat sent to Spain and he's forced to fight in the war he fights and kills enemy soldiers but he can't take it anymore so he plans to escape he releases the prisoners as a distraction and one of those soldiers name Miguel follows him because Robin killed his son because his son tried to kill him first and he spies on Robin and sees Robin suffering in other words Robins home is decimated just like in the movie his neighborhood does not have that many people living in it and Marion and his are no where to be found and like the movie Robin goes to see Friar Tuck who tells him the same thing he told him in the movie except he also tells Robin that is Mother is dead that she lost the will to live thinking her son was dead and when he goes to find Marian at the mine with all the other people he sees Marion making out with his cousin Connor because they thought he was dead and Robin walks away to sob and when Miguel makes his presence known just like little John did in the movie he trains Robin just like little John did and he acts like a father Robin I was thinking when Robin is sad about how is life is turned upside down and how is Mother's gone Miguel Comforts him like a father would with his son and I was like a father to Robin and has a big influence on him as he trains him to be the hood and take down the Sheriff and Robin gets close to the Sherrif to take down from the inside like he did in the actual movie and as for Little John and Will Scarlet are part of the people at the mine who are the resistance Lil Jon is 16 years old Chubby with dark hair and Will Scarlet is his little brother or cousin who eight years old and has shaggy blond hair and blue eyes and both of them wear a long sleeve blue tunic the two of them discover Robin's and Miguel secret plan to take down the Sheriff Robin and Miguel are forced to Clue the kids in and bring them into the loop and the kids help out with Robin's plans but promise to keep Robin's secret then when Maid Marian finds out and when she and Robin are in the same situation they were when she found out in the movie Miguel sacrifices his life to save them when Robin Grieves over him saying he can't do this without him Miguel says you are ready I taught you everything I know now go out there and use it he says as his final words and after Robin berries Miguel he says he doesn't know how to continue with this plan he tells Marion that it was Miguel's idea that he got him into this but she says you've inspired people you give them hope like she said in the actual movie and later when he reveals himself to Connor and all the people Connor is not a fan of the hood he was helping the people survive by pickpocketing like The Artful Dodger and is trying not to track too much attention to himself and everyone he ask Robin to join earlier in the movie but Robin says he cant because he is grieving but he is lying because he is to busy being the Hood but after Robin shows his face and gives his speech to the people like he did in the movie Connor is not happy and doesn't fallow Robin plan but at first but everyone else is and even Connor father says they should to believing it will make their lives better and back to normal again so Robbins twin cousin relents but during the attack Connor not just sees Marion kiss Robin but his father is killed in the battle and that turns Connor against Robin and says you can have Marion get out of my sight Robin faces the sheriff by himself And with all the training he got from Miguel he defeats the sheriff and maybe with the help from Little John and Will Scarlet to and after they Retreat to the Sherewood Wood Forest Robin Hood and Marian have their kiss and moment people move back to their houses the robin sells his house and decides to set a new home in sherewood forest and who fallows him but Lil Jon Will Scarlet and Friar Tuck and Maid Marian and Connor who's walking Woods by picked up by the Cardinal carriage who makes him the new sheriff in Connor accepts and the same thing happens Connor makes a speech as the new sheriff to the whole Kingdom and when Connor raises A poster Robin shoots a bow and arrow into it but when Robin says welcome to the big table Sheriff Robin sheds a tear out his eyes and he says it in a sad tone because he said that his twin cousin has become the new Sheriff and his enemy.
    and I would have had the prologue of a story begin like this.
    I'm going to tell you a story about the Outlaw that Rob the rich to feed the poor and the Evil Sheriff that try to catch him and his band of merry men along the mysterious woods of Sherwood Forest. but you think you've heard this story before you believe you know it already believe me when I say this you don't know the half of it. and people would think I am talking about the first Sheriff but I am talking about Robin Cousin Connor.
    this way the movie might have gotten good reviews.

      @Donald Mcgregor The director said the movie is supposed to take place in its own world with more modern things. It's not meant to be accurate to real world history because its not the real world and isn't trying to be. It's like an alternate world if you want to see it that way

      @@t_r_a_y_e9858 The main problem with this movie isnt the anachronisms, not the tacked on political motifs, not the shabby acting, not the laughable bad CGI or even the crappy dialogue and stolen ideas from other movies, the main problem with this movie is that it horrendous storytelling. They do everything wrong; the structure, the pacing, no build ups; they even have a scene where one bad guy tells another bad guy "the evil scheme" just so that we get to hear it; even though there is no reason AS THEY BOTH CLEARLY ALREADY KNOWS IT.
      Its lazy, its incompetent and its unbelievable that this movie ever got cleared to hit the theaters.

      @@rogermagnusson8877 Apart from calling it horrendous - cause some people enjoy the movie for what it is, apparently (despite there is no doubt the script was more ambitious than just being an action film) - you are spot on. It is an incredibly badly told story, with both too little character establishment, plot establishment and story establishment, in favor of pure Hong Kong style action scenes, not to mention the number of subplots and backstories introduced, but not elaborated on, just takes up time and distract attention from the main plot and story. Which could have worked very well, had it been discovered gradually all the way through the movie, not TOLD in advance or as back-reference, in a scene. In my opinion Taron Egerton portray of Robin is the only element that works well in this movie. Jamie Foxx` character (John), Tim Minchin`s (Tuck), Jamie Dornan`s (Will) and even Marion herself, played by Eve Hewson, are just taking up space and screen time which should have been more focused around Robin himself, and the core theme of the movie - individual greed and ambitions causing mass suffering, destruction and oppression. The combination of combining personal vengeance and idealistic political rebellion, which the movie opted for - clouds the theme and plot more than it clarifies them. (SPOILER ALERT) On one hand to have John wanting revenge for his son, therefore recruiting Robin as a spy tool and assassin, despite Robin at this time would be a traitor to his country by aiding the enemy, is strange enough. But when the sheriff is shown to have been physically and sexually abused as a kid by members of the same clergy he now is in collusion with (to overthrow the king by aiding the enemy) it becomes more than strange. Shouldn`t he have gone against them, and reported them to the king instead? And that way both have gotten revenge for the abuse, as well as won grace with the king - which probably would have secured him both land and a title? It makes no sense for him to behave as he do in the movie. With the backstory he has with the church and the clergy, he would be more likely of stabbing them in the back by giving them up - not joined forces with them.
      But had (continued spoiler alert) Robin instead become aware of the treason and planned coup himself, instead of receiving that information from the papers obtained by Marion and Tuck - say he, when waiting on a stretcher to be taken aboard the hospital ship, by chance saw one of the English officers handing over money to someone Robin recognized to be prominent with the enemy. Making Robin on his own initiative follow that officer when they got back to England, trace him back to the sheriff`s headquarter/town hall. Realizing he needed to get inside it to uncover who the officer was in collusion with there, Robin went to his trusted friend, Tuck, who is with the church. Told him to tell the sheriff Robin of Locksley was back, and having seen for himself how much need the soldiers were for supplies of all sorts, he wanted to do a little more than his bit for the war effort - but also expected that genorousity to be reflected in his standing in the city. That could have gotten Robin on the inside, as a prominent member of the counsel around the sheriff, and placed him in a position to discover who, and how many inside that building who were traitors.
      Instead of John telling us viewers in advance what would happen, we would gradually have had to work it out for ourselves - from what we saw and heard in scenes (not were told about), and what we ourselves concluded from what we saw and heard. So we wouldn`t have known if Robin`s motivation for joining the counsel was self serving interest, revenge or patriotic idealism. And instead of he being played by John as a pawn, Robin - after the sheriff confided in him about the childhood abuse - could have used that to make the sheriff join forces with him.
      Had the story been more focused around just Robin, instead of distracting attention away from the main character with all kinds of support characters and subplots, we as viewers would have had to work out ourselves why Robin did what he did - or had it come as surprising revelation as the story progressed. I think such an additional uncertainty factor would have made the story both more suspenseful, intriguing and engaging. And instead of making Robin appear as some kind of invincible super hero, he would have become a clever spy and daring saboteur. Stealing the money he actually needed to gain his influence, and perhaps even lead and be in charge of the forces chasing the thief who in fact was himself.
      I also think Charlie Hunnam should have played the sheriff, and played him not as an evil villain, but as a smart guy who had risen to power driven by personal ambitions and self-serving interests. Having turned his childhood abuse into a career engine, being promoted by the same clergies who abused him. I think he should have been a previous underage lover of the cardinal, and the cardinal having promoted him, he also assumed him to be so much in gratitude to him, he could be a useful tool to help him overthrow the king. But with the arrival of Robin, the sheriff found a friend and a listening ear, making him realize he had an option.
      Personally I think Taron Egerton was a brilliant choice to play Robin Hood, but just about everything else was wrong with the movie. For that reason I hope he will be given the chance again, but cant say the same for the rest of the cast. Their characters just didn`t fit in, if the story should work well, have something to say as well as being suspenseful, surprising and intriguing, not just fast paced and filled with action. They would have needed a different script for the latter - and a different edit for the former.
      Who knows? Maybe Otto Bathurst has all the footage needed, but someone instructed him to focus so much on action and fast pace the story and plot got destroyed in the process? Maybe there will be a director`s cut version in the future which will be legendary. After all he made Peaky Blinders, so he definitely has got both talent and ability.

    Was a horrible movie with subpar acting, huge plot holes & completely unrealistic. There isn't one character (even a single background character) that is dressed in even slightly true to peroid clothing. It's not like they mixed clothes from all different periods, but rather they all wear fucking modern day clothes! Molotov cocktails, knights with riot shields, machine gun crossbows & the lead character's ability to fire about 5 arrows a second lmao... On top of those huge, world breaking immersion slip ups, the movie promotes a clear agenda. It feels like it's pro Antifa & Anti-Elite (Ultra wealthy, whatever you want to call them), but at same time it's made by the Elite & ultra wealthy so they put there own weird shit into it. The weird fucking party the rich people go to was clearly taken from the directors personal life haha... With girls in modern day stripper outfits showing up in carriages instead of limos... Also, they had to put there Anti-Christian msg into the movie, by portraying the church as an evil, corrupt, power hungry faction. (Which has been true in history before), but I felt the movie was simply laughing in the viewers face, by having that strange line where the Sheriff talks about how he witnessed little boys being raped with brooms... Which is something the Hollywood elite do often. Also, look how monstrous the church people all look lmao, the movie is so translucent & clearly just some bullshit made by the child massacring Hollywood Elite to make them a few bucks.
