    Dave's grunting is actually the result of a rift in time when, in the year 1986, a young Dave Mustaine, fresh off the success of Peace Sells, was drinking at a bar when a wormhole appeared. Through said wormhole came the sound of "Crush 'Em." All the younger Mustaine could do was grunt in disgust at the sounds he heard, and when he found out the responsible party was in fact HIS OWN BAND IN 13 YEARS, he growled in anger. And with that, the wormhole closed.

    You know what's a better Megadeth alt-metal album?
    Cryptic Writings.
    Seriously, like that album has that very 90's flair to it, with some slower tracks like "I'll Get Even" and some big ballads like "Trust" and "Use the Man". But it also knew when to let loose and just be ball-crushingly heavy, like on "She Wolf". And the material is top to bottom much more engaging.

      @MrRantingRandy Totally agree that Dave must bear some fault here. Dave fired a lot of band members before. If he hadn't been into "Marty's idea," I can't imagine he wouldn't have just dropped Marty and found a new guitarist. This is the work of someone who really doesn't know how to write alt rock but who really wants that alt radio money, not someone who wants to make a good metal album in spite of his sideman's bad ideas.

    "No, don't do it! It's not worth the Risk!"
    Here's what I got to say about Risk by Megadeth;
    1: Doesn't sound too bad, but kinda drags on, and not in a good way...
    2: That groan is a perfect representation on what I thought about this song. A slow and drawn-out snoozefest from beginning to end.
    3: Well, it's a decent buildup...
    4:...that automatically falls flat because of how boring and drab this song was.
    5: Wow, this sounds so bad. It's not even worth making fun of in a cheesy, so-bad-it's-good kind of way.
    6: I might sound like a broken record here, but this sounds really boring. Until like the very end...
    7: Same as the last song. Boring and drawn-out.
    8: I forgot this song even existed... Until the very end.
    9: Boring and forgettable. And that's all I have to say about that.
    10: Wow, this song was really boring. At this point, I'm not surprised.
    11: Yeah, same as the last few songs. Boring and drawn-out.
    12: It has decent guitar work, for once. Only for a little bit.
    Risk was one of the most forgettable albums I have heard in a long time, and even in Regretting the Past. At least with albums like Weathered and Extreme Behavior (two albums I considered guilty pleasures), they offered some pretty decent songs, in my opinion.
    Risk was just boring and forgettable and I couldn't remember a single track from this album, no matter how hard I tried.
    It's not the worst thing ever, but it's definitely something to forget.

  • @steves4533
    @steves4533 4 роки тому +4

    IMO, and I am speculating, two things happened that resulted in this album.
    A) the 90s. It was a hard decade for metal. With the rise of grunge, glam metal literally died overnight and became instantly uncool which didn't help the over all metal genre. And then as hip-hop and alternative music became mainstream, it was even harder for the genre which seemed old. Only the best of the rock and metal bands survived this decade, and even for them it was a decade of uncertainty. I can see why they wanted to try new things.
    B) Dave let Marty Friedman indulge his artistic ramblings with this album. Now we all know Marty is a bad ass guitar player, but he has even said "Megadeth is gun metal gray, and there's more colors out there." But like many virtuouso class musicians, they don't always excel in the composing of songs that people want to hear.

    About getting introduced to a band the wrong way. I had that experience with Saxon. Saw them live for the first time in 2014 at Wacken but the thing was that they were doing some kind of orchestra tour and played a really boring set. I just stood there asking myself how the fuck they have so many fans. Then I saw them play a regular set at Wacken this year and understood everything.

    Megadeth was also coming off a hot streak of albums. Maybe "Crush 'Em" wasn't as good as what was off the recent albums, but of course the rest of the album could be this bad. I saw Megadeth on this tour and I'll never forget Dave trying to get a mosh pit going during Crush 'Em. It didn't work.

    You can judge me all you want, but I love this album. I love every single Megadeth record for a simple reason. They're all different and unique. I always hear people complaining about the guitar work on this album but honestly it's pretty good, especially when played on an acoustic guitar. The melodies are interesting, the vocals are pretty good, the bass gives a lot of depth and the whole album has this atmospgere that just appeals to me. I really do see why people dislike this album, but personally I really enjoy it. Diversity, in my opinion, is what makes Megadeth so good. Their tracks never sound the same. They all have interesting ideas in them. Some bands really lack this, and that's why I can never listen to them for a long time. Some famous examples include AC/DC and Cannibal Corpse. (Also, Dream Theater, not quite on the level of the previous bands, but still really repetetive.)

    The reason Goldberg looked like that in the video for Crush 'Em (and why Jean-Claude Van Damme is also it it) was because the song was part of the soundtrack to Universal Soldier: The Return. The movie isn't all that good by the way.

    Alright, now that I talked about Metallica, I think it's time to talk about Megadeth.
    Here's my thoughts on Risk:

    • @aikoyumi4014
      @aikoyumi4014 7 років тому +7

      1: I didn't mind this song, but it really drags on and on.... Not a good start for this album, I'm afraid.
      2: Yeah, this song is pretty bad.
      3: Okay, this _does_ lead to something interesting. However.....
      4: .....it shoots itself in the foot. I can't believe they used this to promote Universal Soldier: The Return. Not to say that the movie was any good to begin with.
      5: This song was terrible. It's monotonous and bland.
      6: I have no words for this...
      7: It's boring and forgettable.
      8: Ditto for this track.
      9: I think I'm gonna need some ecstasy for listening to this.
      10: Great. A reminder of St. Anger.
      11: Yeah, I almost fell asleep on this track, too.
      12: Alright, this could've worked. But, it was wasted potential.
      Megadeth's Risk was anything _but_ a risk. It was too boring to be enjoyable, even in an ironic sense.
      While I personally like Megadeth (Dystopia was a great example), but Risk was something I willingly wouldn't go back to.

    Holy crap, I was literally typing out as the review went along that Risk was my first taste of Megadeth and then you say it was yours LOL I was just getting into metal at the time, Metallica first and then learned of Megadeth. Picked the album up at random at a store, was disappointed, and a bit later after that I grabbed Rust in Peace, realized the error of my ways, and was hooked ever since.
    I've come to appreciate Risk as a "Not-Megadeth" album over the years, but it is still at the very bottom of the discography for all of their albums alongside Super Collider and Cryptic.

    I think Risk is underrated. I’ve been a massive Megadeth fan since I was 19, and there are just outstanding songs here. They are not towards the beginning of the album, they’re buried secretly at the end. I think “Risk” gets sold short a bit too much.

      You are entitled to make this your favorite album and nothing wrong with that. I was in line to see Black Sabbath when Tony Martin was singing (yes, I paid to see Black Sabbath without Ozzy or Dio singing...it was awesome) and talking with another fan. He told me he had a friend who's favorite Sabbath album was 7th star. I've met people who said Turbo was a great album. Just because an album is maligned doesn't mean a person can't find it enjoyable. Hell, the Motorhead album I'm most likely to break out is Another Perfect Day.

    Hey there Mr Luke. I am a new subscriber to your channel and I truly enjoyed all of your "regretting the past" series videos. I am putting this comment here to just make one clarification on this specific video for the megadeth risk album; the song "crush em" was also part of the "universal soldier 2" soundtrack and that's the reason why Goldberg and Jean-Claude Van Damn were in the video. Mustain wrote this specific song for his son's hockey team as an "arena anthem". Just letting everyone know. Keep up the awesome work with your videos and stay heavy!

    I honestly love Risk. The only songs I don’t like are The Doctor Is Calling and I’ll Be There. Insomnia punches you in the face and I think it’s awesome, Prince Of Darkness is kinda weird and weak, But I still like like it. Crush ‘Em is a great song for what it is and I actually kinda love it. Breadline is fun and poppy albeit with dumbass lyrics. Wanderlust is a great song. Ecstasy may be my favorite because it’s a brilliant chord progression imo and I love the lyrics. Seven is just a great fun track. Then the Time songs are just mesmerizing and Time: The End is kinda heavy and I love it

    Its funny. As much shit as Metallica gets for "selling out" and being radio rock nothing they have done comes close to the pop record that Risk is. Actually, when I go back and listen to Load it isn't something I would expect from a band that was forcibly trying to sell out in the 90s. You would think you'd hear more nu-metal, pop-punk, post grunge, etc. Instead there's lots of mid-tempo, blues flavored tracks. And quite a few are long. Hell, even its first single, "Until it Sleeps", is not an obvious "hit".

It has some terrible ones like Super Collider, Burn, and the vocals of All I Want (I really like the main riffing), but it's leaps and bounds better than Risk. Both are near the bottom though in terms of Megadeth albums for sure..

This is really not disputable, there is simply a lot more going on with the album in comparison lol
