In different phases of the game yes teams that line up in a 4-3-3 can still play in a 4-4-2 in defense or after losing possession. The 4-4-2 hasn't been dead it's just teams don't have a rigid formation per se. Teams have more fluid formations throughout the game. In attack the general formation that wins is 5 attacking players 3 midfielders staying at the edge of the box and 2 defenders sitting back.
@@lichaiepperson3009 Yeah, all teams nowadays pretty much attack either in a 2-3-5 or 3-2-5 shape, depending on how worried they are about counterattacks
That's why Havertz works so well off the ball for Arsenal. I feel like many fans and non fans haven't realized his work off the ball to press high has been superb, he's been the reason we have so much of the ball
@@memofromessexwhat are you talking about and English haramball 442 is better ? Fast paced football is good like pep Klopp and others play 442 is dyche system
Am i the only one who doesn’t quite see the point he is making? He has positioned the opponent’s deepest midfielder differently in the two scenarios, one in which the #6 goes toward the ball and one where the #6 does not. The reason the first example is more dangerous is because the #6 has pulled the press to one side with two pressers in the same vertical line, leaving more space to escape. The 4-4-2 would only have found the same problem if the #6 was positioned in the same way as the first example. This is comparing apples and oranges imo. I think the real reason 4-4-2 is preferred is that it gives the press more chances to go zonal- i.e. the second striker does not follow the #6 towards the ball and we see a series of pressing jumps so that perhaps the LW is free but blocked, and any switch of play can be dealt with by the second striker shifting accordingly.
But is goes into like the wide players go forward and become wingers while either one of the full backs or Centre Backs move into midfield to form the box shape with the back 3 so like a 3-4-3 or 3-2-2-3 but Barca move the Left wingers inside and they use Gavi for this
I just see a 4-4-2 defensively that when attacking or high pressing quickly shifts to a 3-2-5. I just think it's the easier formation to make fast transitions.
That's basically what Simeone has been doing for years and he's stuck by it for so long that other teams in La Liga started to adopt it too to counter the bigger teams. Simeone had to start using 532/352 a lot more because teams were using his 442 agaisnt him hahaha
Not so much convinced about the explanations. 4-3-3 is said to leave easily the defense exposed in case of high pressing... but you will notice that 4-4-2 also has 4 defenders and 6 other outfield players. So I don't see where the additional protection is going to come from.
in 442 the winger or side midfielder that's not on the side of the ball either tucks in or mantains shape with the defensive midfielder on that side so when the switch of play actully happens they just trigger drift and drift until they can do a high pressing again. But if any of your striker is bad at covering passing lanes you're screwed. It's a good formation if you can make the midfielders in the side track down like if they were fullbacks so you can man mark the opposition
Athletico Madrid always used 442 like pass 10 years. As for Barcelona, City and Arsenal all of them got same DNA. Talking about direct version of tikitaka. Nothing new
I really want to know where and when has anyone seen Barcelona playing the 442 recently, i think this is a complete lie but i am okay with being proven wrong if someone has seen it
The 4-4-2 reminds me of 2012 Man Utd and 2003 Arsenal teams. Both used it successfully and it’s nice to see a classic formation come back instead of just wingers and 1 high pressing striker from the modern 1-3-2-5s and 3-3-4s with a false 9.
Neither team mentioned in this vid play a 4-4-2 on paper, they typically play it throughout the match for example when arsenal are pressing odegaard pushes forward forming a front two with the 9 Nketiah or Jesus
Football tactics became so complicated that they’re now simple again
Not really. It's utilized nowadays more as an off the ball solution as opposed to long ago when it was utilized in defensive and attacking phases.
@@jordandavis3867 No matter where football goes, it goes back around to the 4-4-2 or its variants. It is the OG organized football formation.
It’s far from simple ngl. Box midfields, false fullbacks, keepers joining build up. It’s becoming a joke😂

No worries!
I've always seen the 4-4--2 as the "I don't know what I'm doing tactically but with this formation we have a chance" formation.
It’s like the default settings formation 😅

Also easily can be a 4-2-3-1 as well if you have a striker who likes to play as a second striker and have that guy drop lower in defense
Student of the game,4yrs now 45,the 4-4-2 to me is bread and butter, pure beast mode in this formation ,miss playing love the beautiful game ❤.
We have come full circle. The box midfield was basically WM formation?
Actually the managers are using the 4-4-2 as defensive shape... As a offensive tactic, 4-4-2 is one of the worsts to today's football.

In 2 years time: "Have you noticed that teams are playing with the sweeper system again?"
Set a reminder in your calendar 🗓 !
It will be most likely be in 2 to 3 weeks at this rate
Well... with a sweeper keeper you can now play the fabled 4-1-4-2 system and basically camp in your opponents half. 😅
The way he talks he must be in love with the shape of the teams

it’s not a 4-4-2 but rather a 4-4-1-1 with the CAM (in theory could be CF/ST) covering the 6 and initiation of the press.
