- You might not realize it, but a lot of the snow you see in your favorite holiday film is actually a bit of movie magic. Special materials (honed over a century of sometimes dangerous experimentation), technological wizardry, and actual snow consultants come together to craft all those wondrous flurries, squalls, and snowbanks. Here's an inside look at how Netflix holiday movies - from The Knight Before Christmas to Holiday Rush - let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

This could be a great UA-cam series explaining movie magic Netflix style for future filmmakers
I would watch every episode
Yes please !
I believe they will do it. This is just like advertising
Buzzfeed is quaking
I realized this was not Buzzfeed halfway through the video
I was so surprised when I saw this is the Netflix channel and not Buzzfeed or others
@@alexacabello9625 it's more revenue for Netflix. The competition heated up with Disney +
.
CandyWorld30 same lol 😂🤣
WRONG. If you’ve watched the Drake & Josh christmas movie you know the answer is cheese.
its upsetting m n my homegurl lmfaooo
its upsetting m n my homegurl I was thinking the same shit
its upsetting m n my homegurl cause we feel like damn, if we can’t go to billy noches then where the hell can we go!

@@katelovespizza what does that really do. All I know is that it is harmful
Everything was really informative, Netflix, but next time please, oh please turn the music volume down and turn the voice volume up. Thanks!
bloodseekeru well it’s the same like in their actual movies lol.. loud music and background sounds 😀
bloodseekeru stop exaggerating, the music wasn’t even loud! You probably have shitty ears that’s all.
@@Ballerz24 its more for if you dont have headphones, its harder to hear. Plus you cant disagree that their sound effects and music are always absurdly loud, but when theyre speaking theyre quiet. Always have the remote next to me!😂
I agree w the guy that said u got shitty ears
Weird I didn't notice that at all. Sounded fine. In fact I sounded really good in my opinion.
Vox is proud
Wait? This isn't Vox?!
@@b0ssihabeacancer45 nah I think this is buzfeed
It’s Netflix
@@plastictree7635 no, it's Bright Side 🙄

Next year's Christmas Netflix movie: A hotshot at a film-snow consultant company falls in love with a young actress when filming on location in a small town.
Bethany Taylor id watch it tbh
You got my vote.
Bethany Taylor I’d watch the fuck out of that
Bethany Taylor You should save this comment when this is a movie in a couple years
I’d watch that tbh 😂 go be a writer for Netflix’s holiday movies or hallmark
Feels like a vox video
I thought the same, and that's because it is. Vox partnered with Netflix for their Explained series
Look up Hungry Beast ABC Australia 2009-2011. VOX UA-cam was directly inspired by it.
@@wolfferoni yeah exactly vox has their explained series on netflix so makes sense
Isn’t it?
If you want to make a snowy Christmas movie just go shoot a few scenes in Canada. We’ve got a lot of snow...so much so much snow 😂 it gets dirty quick but hey wait a few hours and you’ll get perfect brand new snow
It hasn't snowed in Toronto for a couple of days
I’m in SW Ontario, I haven’t seen snow in weeks. It’s been in the 40-50’s all week. Yes 50’s in DECEMBER!!!
candie1230 same! I’m always thinking about (I’m in Canada too) how it’s been so warm here lately!
Not anymore.....
Nahh just come to Lapland (Finland)
I always wondered how this was done in warmer climates
Asbestos in The Wizard of Oz will become my Christmas table conversation hook this year, thank you
Fun fact...
I was an extra on The Knight Before Christmas, the snow they used was literally pulverised paper and they had to keep re applying it after every take because it disappeared into nothing, but it was so so so dusty and everyone was coughing constantly 😂😂😂
ahahaha! loved that movie
Hannah me too! It was a lot of fun to be a part of!!
How’s you become an extra? I’ve always thought that was something I’d like to try and do one day, how can I go about doing that ?
Josh Maher 😂fun
Josh Maher can u tell us more about becoming an extra?
Balance between music and narrating voice not great, otherwise, very nice video
Was fine for me. I guess most people have horrible speakers or need to change their equalizer settings.
@lion Nothing is smart about basic knowledge, it's just common sense. Most people think that the Earth is flat. Does that change the fact that it is round? It's just an opinion so haha stop being a smart-ass.
@@mylongstoryshortned No, most people do not think the world is flat. Most people believe the world is round.
@@ajdigan8274Believe it our not, there are a lot of people that do, probally not most. That was a bit of an exaggeration to go with my point.
@@mylongstoryshortned Yeah I know I just thought you meant over 50% of the population thought the world was flat 😂
I got through half of the video thinking it was buzzfeed lol
Sofia Braskie it’s not lol? Honestly Netflix and buzzfeed just are the same thing to me lol
😂😂😂😂
how is this cleaned up? does this hurt the environment?
Michelle Villanueva is your name actually Villanueva or ur just a fan of Jane the virgin? Just a random question cause it would be cool if it were rly your name lol
Michelle Villanueva that’s why they use paper to make the snow on outdoor sets, it’s environmentally safe, even if not cleaned entirely up.
Gabi_ 1234
Sis. Villanueva is an actual last name that many Latinos have. It was not invented by a show.
K K she never said it was wtf are you talking about 😂
Jmoney
Figure it out. I’m not going to write a paragraph for you.
"If you've ever wanted to make a Christmas movie...there's 1 ingredient that you need to have. Snow!"
Not if you live in Australia.
JackieWarner13 preach
Omfg that music is out talking the voice
this was actually so informative
The song is WAY TOO LOUD for the narrator's voice.
Liah Marquez i wondered if anyone felt this way too lmfao
Don't need this in Canada
I'm sure that after the first take they will need something to cover the tracks to do a retake.
@@sandra-jones just wait a few minutes and they'll be covered up
GOAT don’t need it in Minnesota or forty Dakota
Yo when I heard that music "Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia " that hit hard
Insider: **shocked pickachu face**
Omg the volume of the music was entirely too loud!
YES YES YES I love this sort of content! It makes me appreciate the work behind movies and tv so much more
Netflix is trying to get us to believe that their own studios create these movies. They don't. Netflix pays big bucks to outside studios and then slaps their logo on the film. But, yes, it takes alot of hard work to create films-----and it was sooo much harder and more time consuming before computers and digital effects.
watch vox if you do want more of these kind of video's
vox:
netflix: i’m about to end this mans whole career
We definitely need more of this kind of videos. Fun or interesting facts about making a shows and movies from people who work on them. Behind the scenes are always good and welcomed addition to watching movies and shows
*Music starts*
Me: ITS ALWAYS SUNNY
I actually always have wondered about this
Why I click? I dont know
I dont sno
Now I understand how an actor can stand in a snowstorm without their breath fogging.
Imagine kissing someone in snow and you just taste salt or getting salt in ur eyed🙃
Oh man 🤮
“I remember when I crushed foam together and it looked like snow”
You just made me subscribe. .. well played
More like this! Super interesting.
Also some holiday movies: use felt as snow to cover things
I don’t know why I watched this but it’s interesting
I just wrote an essay about that same movie, the Kenneth Branagh version of Hamlet.
man, snow is so beautiful. wish it snowed where i lived.
Yo turn the background music down! I wanna hear the voice betterrr
I am just here in Australia
same
I am just here in Peru... No snow, but summer instead
I'm just here in England... no snow no sun 😭
Dogs And Fries yep. Specially here in London. One minute it’s raining the next it’s sunny then after an hour it’s raining again. Then you would look out the window honking it’s sunny then going outside it cold as fuck.
Dogs And Fries I use to live in England
I watched the knight before Christmas it was good
The Bestie Show same
I always have wondered how they have snow so like perfect
Who else really wants to know what the paper snow felt like
So interesting!
great now every time I watch a movie and there's snow I'm gonna be wondering if it's paper or salt or foam or marble dust lmao
In Warner Bros. Studios we were told, they sometimes use instant mashed potato flakes for Snow Scenes 😅
Wow! I didn't know it was that complicated. Lol
2:02 I don’t know what they used for snow but it rolled of the mans head 😂
5:38 that voice brings back a memory but I can’t remember, it’s on the tip of my tongue but I can’t figure out where from! It’s driving me crazy! I believe it’s a childhood memory but I can be wrong....
imagine marble powder flying everywhere 😬 i’d be so scared to open my eyes
I had trouble hearing the speaker because of the background music. Why is there a bike bell ringing every 20 seconds?
tbh it doesn’t surprise me about the Wizard of Oz. the shit that went down behind the scenes of that film... absolutely terrifying
HAHAHAHAHA
"To freeze or not to freeze"
😂😂😂😂
Hope you do more of these videos.
As a Michigander, I am ALWAYS aware of the special effect of snow on film. Always. And some productions do way better than others, obviously.
Randy Marsh makes the best Christmas snow
how did the cornflakes even come into question lmao
having worked on the visual effects side of let it snow i can without a doubt tell you that 90-95% of the shots with falling snow are vfx shots.
In a classic Czech christmas fairytale, Tři oříšky pro Popelku (Three Wishes for Cinderella, Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel), the snow was made from finely ground fish bones. You can imagine the horrible smell... but the final result was magical.
Narrator: there i sone thing you have to have in Christmas movies, and that is snow
Me: *chuckling in Australian*
Is there a cleanup process if paper snow is used or does it dissolve?
Nobody:
Me: remembering crazy Steve using cheese to make snow
That always sunny in Philadelphia music 😂❤️
"The snow that goes UP from the stand. The snorty snow. I'm talking about crocraine!"
Come to the upper peninsula of Michigan. We’ll give you some.
I don't have snow in my country, this will be useful.
Omg! They used asbestos back in the day as snow! 😱
why is the background music too loud
This was very educational.
The painted snowflakes actually sounds like cracking fireplace
I still can’t believe Fargo wasn’t featured.
Damn really good and informative video Netflix! Keep it up! I remember I first wondered how fake snow was made after watching muppets Christmas carol when I was like 6 lol. thanks for answering
I’m ready for season 3!
Back in high school, we usually used shredded styrofoam as snow for our Christmas presentations.
This video was really good except the music was too loud at times and I could barely hear the narrator
I wouldn’t even know the difference cause I live in the tropics 🤷🏻♀️
When I heard Sheila’s voice I was SHOOK.
make a video on different blood recipes in movies
That Wizard of Oz asbestos fact was :O
More content like this please
So you’re telling me when I see a scene of a field covered in snow it’s not really snow? 🤔
Pay a good VFX artists crew. Take care of the enviro, etc... Use fake snow for "add on" effects, AKA practical effects. And you should be good.
VFX as in digital effects. CGI
Bruna Guedes i like how u mentioned the environment
Greengang
This is good ...but can I get the soundtrack of this video 😅😂
i don’t know why youtube wanted me to watch this but thank u youtube gods, i enjoyed it
“and as every new Yorker can tell you”
...HellOooo? have you been to Minnesota?!
Was that Anna Akana?? 🤩
3:00 It's Always Snowy in Philadelphia
Are we not going to question the fact that they’re playing it’s always sunny music?
Oh, this is why I thought snow would be fluffy before seeing it irl
I can hardly hear anything over the music
The music is so loud
I just really need to know how they clean it up.
When they didn't not do locations back in the history of film. Seriously. Now they can use many things like going to snowing places to film, using snow making machines and CGI.
loved the video a lot, learned a ton, but the music was too loud :(
they really need to calm down on the music
I’m watching this at 2:45 in the morning lol what is life
Levels levels levels!!!!
Why does the background sound like It's always Sunny in Philadelphia?.... lol 😂
Is it just me or is the bg music too loud. At times, the narrator sounds like he's competing against the music.
Snow comes from everyone scratching their head and letting the dandruff fall like snow on the actors while they open their mouth
