    That's not giving the client what they want. When I do this type of haircut I have to do the layers different on both sides to give the illusion that her layers are the same length when they have a deep part. The side where the hair travels more layers have to be a little bit longer the weaker side layers have to be a little shorter and I explained that to the client before I cut her hair.

    99% of my clients have a side part. I can not cut the top like that or they look lop sided. Over direct your top towards the side with less hair for a more even look.

    If the client consistently wears her hair to one side, why wouldn't you cater to her wishes and complaints and simply cut the hair itself unevenly? That way the hair would lie evenly on the head at least, and she could wear it at her preferred part line. Why not do this as opposed to emphasizing that you're right and that she's wrong?

      Katherine Dodge At the begining of the video (0:30) hes said "I don't care what you do... it's going to seem as if one side is shorter than the other." Andrew made a video that I just watched before this where he did what you mentioned and he says if you cut it unevenly, according to the part. It may lay evenly in length but the side father away from the part will have allot more wieght or bulk. So regardles which one you do its going to be uneven.

      But the side that is shorter will always rider higher, having less bulk. It falls unevenly! What is there to argue about?
      As a client, I prefer a designer not demonstrate for me in such a "technical" way that my hair falls unevenly because of the shape of
      my head! I don't think he means to imply that it's the client's fault exactly, but... just saying.
      What the video shows is exactly why people routinely leave salons with this problem.

      Wrong! It will not be uneven if you cut it for a side part and more importantly will not look uneven. I've had several hairdressers who cut my hair for MY part and when it is cut for my off center part, it has less bulk on the stronger side, falls better, is much easier to handle, and looks far, far better. I quit going to one who did a great job layering except for the fact she insisted on cutting my hair for a middle part. So frustrating!

    • @valeriegould1769
      @valeriegould1769 6 років тому +22

      And you're wrong! And so is Sam. It will only be uneven IF you or your client then moves it back to a middle part. But most of us who side part do not go back and forth. If we did, we wouldn't care and would be fine with it being cut for a middle part. I don't wear a middle part as it just doesn't look very good on me. And I'm not paying someone to do a middle part cut. I'm paying them to do a side part cut which strangely isn't that hard for a good stylist. But for ill trained stylists or stylists who don't care, it seems to be impossible. I just don't get it.

      Valerie Gould yeah I recently had a little mishap with getting layers with a side part. Nothing major but I noticed after I washed it and styled it there were a few strands that fell to one side that were much longer. I just trimmed them to match my side. I've inspected it all week and look wise it seems fine but I know if I did the measure test like he does in this video one side (the side swept side of my part would be longer than the other) but it looks good from the side and back.

    Well, the point is not for the hairdresser to convince the client of how it is cut. It is for the hairdresser to cut appropriately to achieve what the client wants. So what he needs to do is cut for side part, not middle.

    • @HoopsCossey

      Exactly! I have a new hair dresser who didn't do this.y retired hair dresser always took my side part into consideration. My new gal wanted me to move my part.😂

  • @cnith2
    @cnith2 10 років тому +57

    I'm a little lost, Sam. If the client parts on the side, they will still have the "short" side even if you cut it even at the middle part. And when you do this trick, it will work fine at the salon and then they go home, part on the side and go dang it, I got swindled! And they come back to the salon or pass you off as a bad hairdresser to everyone and their mom.
    Wouldn't it be easier (and I'm not saying I do this) to just cut the layers with the side part in place? (Where ever they normally part) Then the layers look "even" to them which is what they wanted in the first place.

    I’ve gone to a stylist for a year now & have almost begged for her to cut for a side part. ALL my other previous stylists know how to do this & have accommodated me. Last time, she told me I just “don’t understand layers.” So, no more paying her $130 every 8 weeks for cut/color. I’m DONE wearing a side part with a center-part cut. It looks uneven & stupid. Can’t believe I waited this long to leave...🤷🏻‍♀️
    If stylists won’t make their customer’s hair SEEM even, even when asked...they deserve to lose the business.

      So the solution to uneven layers for someone with a side part is to simply part their hair in the middle....wow....I wonder if bears shit in the woods too? Hmmm. 😑
      Not everyone has a natural middle part. Not everyone looks good with a middle part. I am one of those people. Your basically just explaining how to make urself sound right. Feels very passive aggressive to me. But what do I know. Just make the damn layers even. If the customer wants it, then that's ur job. Not to sit and explain why they arent even...

  • @antoniosnyder6192
    @antoniosnyder6192 6 років тому +8

    I cut my own hair myself and I purposely cut my layers uneven to accommodate my deep side part cuz if I didnt the weaker side would look blunt af while the strong side has layers up the ass, yes cutting it this way can cause more bulk on the strong side but its not noticeable and personally I like it I feel like the layers blend better this way maybe I'm just wierd

    • @antoniosnyder6192
      @antoniosnyder6192 6 років тому

      But I still keep the layers on the weaker side a bit longer towards the back just so the ends on that side dont get thin and wispy cuz I have a lot of layers

  • @aleeawatson5499
    @aleeawatson5499 5 років тому +36

    This is not what I’m looking for when I googled how to get layers even on both side with deep part.
    A lot of clients (not all obviously from comments) know they are asking you to cut uneven but to make the sides match so they don’t have a flat “or long side. This is pointless for that and would completely piss me off if I was the client. I’d walk away feeling like you were a pompous ass that has to be right. I’d also question how long you had been out of school since that is super ‘text book’.
    I’ve searched this channel for a video that describes how to do a haircut based on a side part & found nothing. I’ve done plenty and can do them well but was hoping for an easier and quicker way to achieve the look most people are going for besides just pretending their part is center and going off a 90 from there. It works but not as well as I’d like and i end up tweaking it to get it right for to long.

    • @jillikringcarter6376

      Exactly. We want, with a side part, for the layers to match and not look like we have long hair in one dude with layered hair on the other. We want equal layers on both sides.

      YES this video is so useless and condescending. why on Earth is he pulling the hair up to measure the layers when you should be letting the hair fall down and measuring from the sides of the face to make sure that the layers are even in it's natural state. I'm not Cindy Lou Who!! Cut from the bottom not from the top, around the head, to create an even looking asymmetrical cut. I don't understand why no one is being taught this skill anymore, I left cosmetology School in 2006. Y'all are nuts out here ruining my layers and my curls with this nonsense!

    Many thanks Sam for your informative and professional videos. I understand explaining to the client, however, at the end of the day if the client parts there hair on the side consistently then instead of cutting it square on the top shouldn't the actual part be the centre. When I did go to hairdressers, I ALWAYS had to shorten the longer hair on the other side of the part to achieve the balance I needed for the look I wanted.

    I feel like Sam didn't address on how to cut around this issue. We know the lengths will appear different, but I want to know how to keep the same cutting point on both sides. I've had hairdressers cut to my deep side part.

    • @cholericmelancholic3599
      @cholericmelancholic3599 8 років тому +13

      Agreed. I'm not a hairdresser and I have given up on having layered hair, after years of frustration. If a client is coming to you and saying the layers are shorter on one side, what they are saying is that they don't like the way it looks. They don't need an explanation of square layering technique - they want a different technique! Brittany, if your hairdresser cut to your side part, I'm guessing they were using a version of 'inversion layers' - I found this blog post an absolute revelation, however, I actually prefer pretty much one-length hair, now even though it's not fashionable, either that or I can deal with really long square layers where the shortest layer is barely shorter than my perimeter. Anyway, here's the blog post - hope you enjoy karyn-howtoofhair.blogspot.co.uk/2008/10/why-square-layers-really-bug-me.html

    • @TheRiverAnt
      @TheRiverAnt 8 років тому +11

      Yes I agree! It's not the communication from stylist to client that's the issue here. .. it seems to be the other way round. As a client I would like to have a deep side part AND layers that drop to identical symmetrical lengths on both side (which obviously means that they they shouldn't be cut square in the first place, but cut to the parting). If you always wear the parting in the same place, why would you want to cut the layers from both sides square unless you want a very asymmetrical cut? How can you get across to the stylist that you want layers to appear symmetrical with a deep parting?

    • @NicquiMadden
      @NicquiMadden 7 років тому +15

      He definitely didn't address the issue. The way to do it is to overdirect the top layers to the opposite side of the parting and then cut.

Clients are not sitting there going, “oh, I didn’t know my head was round!” They are sitting there going “yeah but could you STOP cutting my hair square to a middle part when I ALREADY TOLD YOU I wear a side part so my layers will be even when I wear it the way I want?”

    Thanks Sam your videos are very informative and detailed with great tips and tricks. I would like to see A haircut video that explains how to cut hair if it's part of on one side versus parting down the middle. I've done the cut just the way you did on this video but I find myself going back to the clients side part and sorta matching it to the other side. My question would be, is there a quicker way verse just using the center as a guide?

      It's the comments like this that keep me motivated ... so thank you! As stylists, we must always strive to reinvent ourselves. Once you master a way of doing something go back and discover new ways to do it. When you find yourself becoming stale, challenge yourself to do something new and see if you can make that work in your favor. Best of luck to you!

    Is he serious with this one? So the best way to cut even layers when client wears her hair with the side part is by cutting it to look even for the middle part and then explaining it? I just can't🙄 I just lost all respect I had for Sam Villa. Stylists, if you want to keep your clients, please DO NOT explain a haircut to a client, make it look the way client wants it. There is nothing more frustrating than a stylist explaining your haircut after they do a botched job. Nobody cares if you cut it correctly. Make it look correctly! Isn't that the point of the haircut, the way it looks? Haircutting is not engineering, if it doesn't look right, then it means 100% of the time IT ISN'T RIGHT!!! You can't just explain it away. I have extremely thick hair and I part my hair slightly to the side. For years I would come home after getting a "correct" haircut and realize how lopsided it looked and have to go back to get it fixed. Everyone would see it, but not people that had haircutting experience. It was always a mystery to me how they would come up with that conclusion. This video explains why lopsided haircut looks even to the stylist, but not to regular folks which what really matters in the end. I stopped going to an expensive international designer after she explained my haircut to me. I asked for 3 disconnected layer look and when she finished I saw only 2. Then she explained that she cut the 3rd one, but it just wasn't visible🥴 Guess what, if I want to see 3 layers and only see 2 it really doesn't matter to me whether you cut the 3rd one. If I don't see it, then it doesn't count. I finally found inexpensive salon where I had 3 different stylists cut my hair and every time it looked right. The only time it did not look right was when I didn't explain correctly what I wanted or really just didn't know that what I thought I wanted would not look good for my hair texture. I went back and got my hair recut to my satisfaction for no extra charge. They use different techniques than every other salon I have ever been to. It is not just standard lift hair to an angle and cut and just hope it looks correctly because you cut it "correctly". I moved 30 minutes away and I still go back to that same salon because I am tired of getting "correct" haircuts everywhere else. So how about all you lousy stylists stop explaining haircuts and start understanding that clients want their hair to look good not to be cut "correctly". If you can't do it then at least tell the client that you are not capable of cutting hair for a side part before hand before you mess up their hair. This is just beyond absurd, but it explains what is wrong with haircutting industry and why there so many bad stylists out there.

    Either we’re comfortable and skilled enough to cut center and off center parts or we aren’t. The relationships we have with existing and new clients is mainly dependent on the first comment Sam made:
    Communication.
    Reading a lot of these comments it appears the problem isn’t as much about weight in a particular area, how the hair falls, but how well stylists and clients communicate the expected results. IJS

  • @NYBarbieP

    Wow. I really disagree with him. I was hoping to get advice on the most efficient way to achieve balanced appearance to layers (knowing they would actually have to be cut more at the part and technically "uneven"), but this did not help at all. No way I'd have this argument with a client. I would definitely consult & be sure they are fully committed to daily side parting before explaining and then cutting more there. I think cutting more at the side part will work best for those who have a strong natural side part, so it always parts in the same place after you cut it accordingly. Since he didn't have a magical formula for me to save steps, I'd say safest way to achieve what CLIENT wants is to do uniform layering first, then go back to the part issue. A recent experiment on a mannequin turned out quite nicely. I took a somewhat narrow, oblong diamond section along the side part, combed it out 90° from the head, (so like " / ") or maybe just slightly more over directed to the weaker side, made that cut, then blended out to the longer layers all along each side of that part and fine tuning of face framing, especially on the weaker side. It ended up with layers falling with a nice symmetrical balance from side to side, even though the cut itself is now technically asymmetrical. If anyone has any better ideas or can share tips to save steps and time, I'd really appreciate it.

    One of the instructors I had told us to just take a pie shaped section on the side of the part that's thinner and cut it shorter to match the visual length of the other side. I like that idea, but if they don't part exactly where you did then there are even shorter pieces on the heavier side.

    • @chasey1978
      @chasey1978 6 років тому

      Nina Radley yes but telling them they have to keep it styled and showing them is easier than his long explanation of why he supposedly can't cut a person's hair evenly. Some days the longer stands of my "heavy side" make their way on the other side of my head and it looks weird but I just brush it back over and use hairspray. Until you wear a side part for awhile and train your hair some parts may want to go back to the other side. Just tell them that. Some stylists just forget to go into styling tips after they cut a clients hair. They just want to cut and get the person out.

    I am not a hair dress have no train i just enjoy watching this stuff. But are there really people in this world that dont understand that if you move hair from one side of your head to the other its still the same length as the other side it just looks shorter?how is that it seems like a no brainer to me.

    • @valeriegould1769
      @valeriegould1769 6 років тому +5

      Sadly, it shows a deep lack of training on his part. Side part hair cuts seem to be a lost art except for a few well trained and educated hair dressers. It is a struggle.

    What if they want to keep the severe side part instead of putting it back to the natural part...yet still want it even. Do you cut it shorter on the side that they part it on to make it seem even (even though it will be uneven) Am I making sense?

    • @adventureloch
      @adventureloch 10 років тому

      You can cut on their natural or chosen part, just cut at a 90 degree angle from it. But always be sure to leave enough hair in your perimeter when you do this. I usually leave an inch to 2 inches out around the perimeter depending on how fine it is. Just make sure you blend it. Hope that's helpful

  • @matthewirvin6505
    @matthewirvin6505 6 років тому +1

    you can also cut their layers in a convex at their part line and they will be even.

    This is so wrong! Sam you really really really need to learn THE HEAD SHAPE MATTERS TECHNIQUE by Kim Moore who took 2 years off from her career as a hairstylist/salon owner to figure out how to cut hair so that it comes out even! Hair should not be shorter one side. Before you all berate me for this comment go checkout her website as well as her videos on YT.

    You talk about informing clients all the time but what if they don't want to know? I'm in cosmetology school and I have clients and I feel like if I ALWAYS tell them what I'm doing and why I'm doing it, I feel like I'm annoying them or that they don't want to hear it and they don't care. What do I do about this?

    • @shaynajewell8225

      Please learn to do what your clients ask. I KNOW that if my stylist cuts my hair how I want it cut, the layers will technically be uneven. I also know that they will fall evenly, giving my hair the proper shape and curvature I'm looking for. I nearly cry whenever I look in the mirror and see how uneven my layers are right now.

    Cut from the back outwards towards the front not upwards downwards. This technique is bad for side parts even when just trimming hair. My hair is always longer and flatter on one side it seems no matter what because most hair dressers follow a one size fits all way of doing things.

    Omg I am very frustrated with stylists. My hair right now is growing out still from a stacked short hair cut I never asked for during peak covid. Hair butchered and thinning shears that ruined my hair. Here Iam 18 months later and no stylist. I wear a deep side part and am cutting my hair myself despite my errors from learning. My face framing is uneven and I know it. Have tried cutting it with it parted in middle, as many pros say to even on youtube only to then part it in the middle after and one side has no framing. So then now I have a hole too on that side from the trials and errors. The hole disappears when I part on the side. Now I am cutting my face framing while parted on the side and make sure that my layers look even to other side as a side style. If I were to part in the middle, they are not. Layers in the back I just layer the back evenly and what happens happens as I flip my hair around. But many stylists have said it doesn’t matter for face framing where you part it before you cut. Yes it does. It truly does with a deep side part that moves hair to the side beyond the triangle.

    Awwww Sam, I'm so disappointed in you!!! You're costing hair dressers money and losing them clients! I've dropped many a hair dresser who pulled exactly what you did in this video and then had to recut my own care. When I find a hair dresser who REALLY does know how to cut layers for those of us who side part our hair, I will follow them from salon to salon and even drive and fly to get to them if they are in the same state. You really do need to learn how to cut hair for side parting so that it falls evenly on BOTH side when side parted. If I, a non-professional can do it, then you, a professional can do it and you need to learn to do it so you can educate others.
    A client may put up with this once, but we will NOT return!!! I now call and ask if the hair dresser knows how to cut for side parts so that the hair falls evenly on both sides when side parted. I have had two who lied and said they did but did not return after they did not follow through even after a spirited discussion. I also make sure to have them cut my hair about three inches longer than I really want so I have room to fix it.
    Come on Sam! You can do it! Stretch your skills!!! Make us side parting clients happy instead of taking our money and trying to sell us a bill of goods. If other hair professionals can do it, you can do it! Sooo very disappointed in you. The one good thing about this video is now I know where this line of malarky came from. Shame shame shame!

      Valerie Gould yeah just side part the hair and then cut it. It's not hard. I don't know why some people are just not willing to go that extra step instead of just doing something a certain way just because it's how it's always done. That's called stubborn or inflexible.

    My hairdresser does it like this and my layers are different lengths on both sides! This is not right. I want my hair to hit at jawline - it does on one side but not the other! I come home and shape it myself.
    Surely the hairdresser shouldn’t presume to know the client’s needs better than the client?

    Only hairdressers can chop hair until it doesn't have any meaning at all. Chop half the length by just dancing around the model, take from left to right and fluff in the back, grab chunks and twirl and twist and curl and swirls and wurl and and and... They "force" you to wash your hair every day and don't care at least how shampoo doesn't - for the love of heaven - moisturize hair! My hair has reach unimaginable length I even forgot it exists just because I cut the exact split v end and not the whole chunk. Look uploader I don't care about your toy with a face out there because you never in any of your videos explain about COWLICKS!!! I never saw or heard a hairdresser mention or know anything to do about COWLICKS. It's either you style your hair or you... style your hair. That's it in the world for them.

  • @thunder6279
    @thunder6279 4 роки тому +3

    1. NEVER feather the ends of curly hair unless you want to blow it out and set it every single time you do your hair. 2. You still have to blend the layers into the bangs AND the back of the hair or it's going fall in a big heavy chunk unless it's hairsprayed into a fan. That's why the client is complaining - you're just whacking hair mechanically without paying attention to how the hair lays - you should be cutting wet first and dry to feather it - 3. Angle cutting AND point cutting AND thinning shears AND zig zag sections are completely redundant. You can do it all with one tool My tip: If the hair is straight, just use a razor for everything and cut down instead of up. If it's curly, start wet and only use angle cuts ro create shape. Then dry to remove weight and blunt ends selectively. Section and resection for perfection. Maybe he should be studying the clients hair instead of talking at all. You know, clients DO NOT want to be mansplained, they want you to make their hair work for them. 🙄 you should be explaining dangers and risks and giving them broadstroke descriptions of the process about to be undertaken and a little more helpful detail at each step. But trying to tell them that they can't have what they want because you only know one way to do something is exactly why clients move on.
