    I was knocked off my BMW gs last year by a car with sufficient force to break 8 ribs, the bike was written off. I was wearing KLIM Krios pro which hit the ground multiple times. The doctors at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Scotland were quite astounded looking at the damage to the helmet that none of this force was transferred to my head, so in the true test the Krios pro performed as it should. I’m back riding again wearing a new Klim Krios pro

    For ADV riding in the Northeast, my must have feature is the drop down sun visor. When you're going from bright full sun on a dirt road going through fields, and then cutting down a season or trail in the woods, being able to manually adjust your brightness is huge. Tint in the woods makes it easy to miss changes in trail condition or pick lines.
    I haven't run a photochromic visor as is offered on the Krios Pro, but the drop down visor has been my favorite feature on the AT950, and a must have for my next helmet

    Good review! Currently I have the Klim Krios pro (awesome transition lens) I use in warmer temps and a Schuberth E1 for cooler rides, though admittedly a ‘heavier’ lid, it’s quietness is tough to beat.

    I have the Klim Krios and really like that it feels so light on my head and the quick magnetic buckle over D-ring. But the padding is lacking at the top inside starts to hurt my head after 30 min. I use it for short trips around town. I have the Arai XD-4 which is so comfortable and has amazing ventilation. Use it for longer trips. The only thing that would make it better would be if was lighter weight.

    I have a Hornet and the visor is worthless going into the sun. I used it for a season and ended up with a sore neck because the visor would lift. It is a well made helmet. Currently I'm on my second Arai XD 4, it is expensive, but works very well and the visor is very functional.

      I would probably say the Shoei due to the fact that we felt it is the quietest of the bunch which means it seals the well and keeps a lot of air out. Whichever helmet you get, you want to make sure the vents can be closed. - Chase

    I wore the AT 950 for a couple of years but as a daily rider I wanted something lighter so I went with the Krios Pro. Another thing I love about the Krios Pro is that both the Transitions visor, and the pinlock come in the box.

    I have an LS2 Explorer carbon helmet and I've been really happy with it for almost a year now. I've been in accidents with their other helmets with head contact with vehicles and no damage up stairs from them. Something I think people should look into. Also you can wear mx goggles with this helmet while it offers a nice screen and drop down sun shade

      Do you find the lack of visor detents annoying? I was looking at the mx701 because I tried on the blaze and liked the fit but I wouldn't doubt the 701 is much better, just that they didn't have one in the store I went to. The blaze fit nice for my glasses and like having the drop down sun visor.

    I tried the Arai years ago and couldn’t get it to fit my head right, I really wanted to love it but just didn’t fit. I rode with a Klim Krios Pro for 3 years, and I loved it BUT, it was ssssoooo loud and didn’t breathe well enough to warrant the noise. Last year I snagged a Bell MX9 for $140 on sale and it’s really awesome. Super comfy, huge opening, great visibility and safety features, and for the price I can afford the high likelihood of needing a new helmet from a spill on the trail.

    • @DansDrives
      @DansDrives 4 місяці тому +1

      The fact that it doesn't have a proper pinlock system and no-fog shields really don't fit without reducing the field of view makes it a deal breaker. I love Arai everything else, but this helmet SUCKS in the PNW unless you're only riding on the really dry days. The XD5 coming this year looks to fix that, but the XD4 was a huge let down for me. I sold it and went with a Shoei, which isn't nearly as nice, but I can see out of it at least.

    i started off with the bell mx9 as my first helmet when i got my tenere700 and I had no issues. Other than the venting is terrible, and I wear glasses, so it’s a pain taking your glasses off, then, your helmet, putting your glasses back on, so I got the scorpion EXO and the modular design is what counts for me, I like having built-in sunglasses so I can wear my glasses, and not have to worry about wearing sunglasses, or swapping out my face shield, it seems like banging for the buck. The scorpion is the way to go for me, I just got one four days ago and I’m alreadyenjoying the benefits, and the venting is a lot better, so I’m not fogging up my lenses

    I have the Caberg Tourmax Sarabe (not sold in the USA). Modular, lightweight, shipped from Italy, ECE certified, and sub $300. 100% worth it!
    I actually prefer the Caberg over my Schuberth E2 Defender. The Schuberth costs more, is heavier, noisier, and the force-integration of the adapted Sena is subpar at best.
    Unfortunately, neither helmet is represented on your table. If an American distributor can get Caberg into the U.S., DOT approval and all, it would be a slam dunk.

    Aria or shoei to run the Cardo pactalk bold? Are the xl sizes shell specific or do they share the xxl shell? My MX9 has been fine but it’s time to upgrade.

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  4 місяці тому

      I am not 100% sure about the shell sizes for those helmets, but I would assume that a XL and XXL share the same shell size. As for the PackTalk, both these helmets will work with a bluetooth coms system. With most helmets, the only thing that really changes is whether you can use the clam mount or if you need to use the adhesive backed mount for the unit. Some helmets don't have much of a gap between the shell and the EPS to slide the clam shell mount into. - Chase

    I just went from my Arai xd4 to a Klim krios pro and the big thing i noticed was weight and how quite it is compared to the xd4 it's also just as comfortable as the xd4. But the big thing i did not like about my xd4 was the lens in the summer it was ok but once it gets colder here in BC even with the best anti fog treatments it would still fog up like crazy and then I'd have to ride with it up if i wanted to see where i was going and they seemed to stop making a pinlock for it. Still a great helmet but not so much for us living in a rainforest.

    I've been running a Scorpion Exo AT-950 for 4 years now and have been reasonably satisfied with it, but, will probably not replace it with an AT-960 for two reasons: Personal fit and Build quality.
    My head is a 60.5, when I tried on the Large, it was way too tight on my forehead and back of skull. The XL was comfortable, but after a year, got too loose.
    Build quality hasn't lived up to expectations - few small plastic pieces in the visor/peak mechanism have broken over the years. Helmet is heavy, as expected, but also pretty loud.

    The visor on the Scopion ECO AT960 vibrates at 50+ m.p.h. It's really bad. The screws do start to back out as a result. Something to be aware of. Other than that, it's very comfortable and has an internal sun visor (which is mentioned in helmet-specific video). I love this helmet for the price.

    • @noahgolly4444
      @noahgolly4444 4 місяці тому +1

      My two cents from experience is that moto helmets like a fox v3 or RS stink for a BDR. The wind noise, warmth and the easy of use of a face shield over goggles (and sunglasses) of even a basic ADV helmet is totally worth it. I picked up a warn once O Neal helmet for a steal of a price and have been super happy. I can also leave my intercom system installed full time in it.
      Moto boots for a BDR yes, one helmet for both I’d say less great.

    I've been using the Shoei Hornet X2 for 7 years now (I know, some say that's too long). I've really enjoyed this helmet other than a pressure point just above my forehead which has improved with wear. It should be noted I have a very "long oval" shaped head (long front to rear). This limits what helmets fit me. I found Arai and Bell helmets to be too round (wide) for my head. The shape of your head can be a helpful detail to know. I have not experimented with different padding thicknesses some helmets now provide. I'll definitely look into that for my next helmet.

Doing some harder off-roading though really shows it's overall lack of airflow. Chase nailed it...if you're doing more highway than dirt, it's the best. Too bad that the Hornet won't be sold in the ECE markets for at least another year. the krios pro seemed great at first, but the padding packs out quickly and gets loose. I've replaced all the pads every year and it still has gotten too loose again. Also, the visor mechanism wears out and the detents won't hold after a bit. the overall quality is pretty crap too - vents and liner is not great. But that lightweight over a long day does make a big difference though....

    I like these new style helmets with the face shield that slides up but still allows the use of the visor. I'm a retired motocross racer and off road rider and I've always wore goggles but I've wondered if it would be possible to have a face shield integrated into the helmet that slid up or down at the riders choice. It would eliminate the need to wear goggles which would be much cooler for the rider in hot conditions. I think it's possible to design a helmet like that and at least one of the many helmet manufacturers should be able to design one.

    The only 2 complaints I have are that the peak and visor removal/swap is a bit old school, and the peak itself is a bit dated. If Arai were to revise the helmet and change nothing aside from adding the ability to remove the peak and visor independent of one another, I'd be first in line to buy it. If they also did a revised peak for a little better airflow and a little more range of motion I'd be in heaven. Absolutely love the helmet.

      @@rmatvmc Looks like the Euro version is already out. I took a peek at it. Honestly, I think I prefer the XD-4, and I've seen some clearance pricing on them recently. I have had the Arai Xd4 for a year now and I just was gifted the scorpion AT950 recently. I am going to try and ride with the scorpion more to compare, but my biggest gripe with the arai is the lack of pinlock shield options. The plain shield fogs terribly and it would be nice if they had photochromatic shield options too. That being said, the arai is by far still the most comfortable helmet I own and it actually flows a lot of air through the vents. But the fogging issue and need for sunglasses to be worn inside the helmet has me trying other options. The fogging is so bad it will fog in any weather under 75 degrees.
    The biggest difference I have noticed between the scorpion and the arai so far is definitely the weight and the air flow. scorpion is heavier and doesnt flow as much air. But i am willing to deal with those things in the meantime if the fogging and sun protection issue are taken care of. Would love to try the klim krios pro, but I dont really want to spend another $700 on a new helmet at the moment. That helmet has ticks all the boxes as long as it isnt super loud.

    Since the 80s I wanted Arai, but could not afford it. I got the Tour-X4 two years ago, my expectations might have been too high, but this helmet in my opinion is not the Holly Grail. Yes the quality, comfort and safety is up there but there are some short comings. I live and ride in Indonesia, its hot here. The ventilation is not great (I actually ride without the face shield most of the time). The face shield does not rotate high enough when fully open, the lower edge is in your filed of view. The non adjustable sun visor is a let down. The helmet is not especially quiet (yes with the face shield down). Last I have the matt finish on the helmet (red/white/blue), the white portion (especially the sun visor) have turned into off white/dirty shade of white.

    • @StravaigADV
      @StravaigADV 2 місяці тому

      While there are poorly made modular helmets, the at-960 has an ECE rating with shield down; so equivalent of a full face ece. I have had two wrecks wearing modular helmets, with one of the wrecks being at 70mph. That being said, not every modular helmet is well made. No matter the build quality, making sure the face shield is locked in is essential.

    Too bad all those channels only recommend products they sell. The best ADV helmet you won’t hear much about is Suomy MX Tourer. The weight, the shell material, the build quality, the sun visor, the conversion option [road/offroad], the beak, the DD lock, the ventilation - all top tier. Sadly, being a small Italian company, Suomy doesn’t care much about the distribution. But check out MotoGP helmets and you’ll find them there. Highly recommend. I have two as they’re hard to find, but totally worth it.

    Lens foggs constantly in cooler temps.
    Air Visor vibrates so badly it distorts my vision at speed over 45 mph. checked for tightness at mount bolts, bad design, Had to remove it
    Tabs for shield mount after sun visor removal , NO must purchase after market. !
    Upper vent rattles annoyingly anything over 20 mph, unless popped open. cannot ride with it closed position.
    Fit is very nice , comfy
    flip up chin bar good movement.
    internal speaker room, yes great fit for even larger speakers.
    Flip down sun visor, works as it should .
    Shield, good field of view, nice tabs fro both hand operation, stays put when riding in any open setting.
    Over all I would not purchase another Scorpion Helmet, too many other better built units for teh price range .
    For mostly off roading Yes, its a goo dpurpose
    For mostly street riding, NO too many issues

    I understand its not an in depth video but some of these helmets will get people killed. Recommending a DOT approved helmet that doesn't even pass ece 2205 let alone 2206 which is actually decent. Remember most riders who end up dead are beginners don't make the mistake of buying something poor quality to save money

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  21 день тому

      Saying some of these helmets will get people killed is a pretty extreme and just not true. We always recommend people spend as much as they possibly can on a helmet but the reality is many riders are still not going to buy a $500+ helmet. Also, just because a helmet doesn't have a certain certification doesn't necessarily mean it won't pass the tests that are required for that certification. Many companies only pay for the certifications they think are important or needed as it costs thousands and thousands of dollars to get a helmet to go through the testing for each certification.
