For sure Whitney has more power in belting, has better breath support and resonance. Her voice is soulful, sincere, and full of emotions. None of her performance fail to touch my heart.
But what makes Mariah special is her artistry, musicality, she sounds very feminine with all her melismas and whispery voice. And whatever she does, she does it with intention, pattern, rhythm, and harmony.

What is used here are all WHitney live performance. You are just a lamb and do not know Whitney's live performance. It is great you think Whirtney performances are studio? which is Mariah problem because she often dubs are live performances in the studio

Nippy got away with things the everyday singer can't bcos her voice was naturally beautiful. There r barely clips for her here, just audio but tryna keep dat chesty sound as she goes higher wit the flapping jaw and the bulging veins is not technically good. But lyk I said, her voice was so dam beautiful that she cud get away wit it.
You’re showing your ignorance here. Whitney’s veins were because her body type. It had nothing to do with technique. Whitney was very slender. Singing makes you use muscles in your neck does it not? Whitney began singing at an early age therefore she had vocal muscles in her neck. Just like bodybuilders who flex their muscles for years, when they are using their muscles we see veins. As far as the jaw thing, it’s more of an aesthetic thing than any thing else because.there are clips of her using her vibrato and she doesn’t move her jaw. You’re obviously a lamb and that fine but don’t be the typical delusional lamb. Whitney’s technique is flawless. Had it not been she wouldn’t have been able to last from 1985-1996/1997 in her prime voice.

What I hate about the video you chose to analyze is that none of Whitney’s video was live but all of Mariah’s was🤨. Not your fault but definitely the original video owner is biased…
all of Whitneys vocals are live audios.. You can ask about the concerts she sang them. None of them are studio vocals.. I can send you all the concert clips she sang them. It is sad you think they are not live. The E5 for example is not even a studio song. Check He i believe london live 1986.. The f#5 is from London 1986. The G5-G#5 belt is from new york 1986 concert!. Youa re just illiterate and a blind lamb. The a5 NOTE IS from wanna be starting something ... and so and so forthe. The big held C#5 note is from grreatest love of all Wembley 1988. The phrased F5 is from queen of the night Brazil 1994. You are illiterate like most lambs about whitney superior higher belts

Not true, Whitney was by far a better belter. Mariah would die trying to belt with the difficulty Whitney employed and the diufferent mode3s Whitney used. 4 modes! Mariah could only do 2 modes!

@odumosuolusegun2781 I disagree Whitney's F5 and G5 belts were weak and shrill. Her mid range is where she shined. Mariah upper belts had way more ease to them. But what makes her songs hard to cover is her transitions between registers and her agility

Whitney had phenomenally powerful F-G5s in her prime. Mariah had the ease because she uses lighter belting coordinations and singing with a brighter vowel placement and lighter tone overall. Whitney overall takes power and Mariah takes ease.

@@LesageSingingoh I like Whitney's tone as well but there's just something about Mariah's tone that just takes soul to another level. It's like a cloudy dream. Songs like underneath the stars & my all really showcase what I mean in terms of her tone. Or even in their duet with when you believe.... Mariah's tone is out of this world when her verse comes in ... it's like a silky, sugary, cloud lmao 😂 that's how I would describe her tone & I love it

I’m so sick of people who say “Mariah is just better because her songs are suicide”. The truth is Whitney is superior. Whitney is very agile. Whitney had phenomenal technique. Whitneys tone is unmatched. Whitney has breath support. When you combine all of things and all of the other vocal characteristics Whitney possessed it’s hard to not say she’s not the best. Go through Whitney’s live performances and you’ll see. In a side note, when the poster was wondering if Whitney was doing something intentionally or she corrected herself-Whitney was first and foremost a gospel singer…99.9% of the time she intentionally sang the way she sang. IYKYK.
They are both legends in their own right. Nobody’s saying Mariah is “superior” to Whitney.

Mariah’s tone is also great, she had great resonants live belts up until g5 in her prime, she can go down to a g2 with a dark, husky lower register, she has always had excellent musicality and excellent agility, a beautiful falsetto and ofc her iconic whistle register. The way she was able to manipulate her voice’s texture to make it sound breathy and ethereal or more grounded, and her melismatic singing style, inspired many female pop singers even today (Ariana comes to mind). Plus she wrote her songs.
At her prime she delivered incredible live performances of even her hardest songs, with the whistle register (Emotions, Someday, Vanishing etc etc) or without it (Without You, Open Arms, Forever, etc etc). Between 1990 and 1996 she was consistently reliable as a live performer and she truly was one of the best vocalists ever. Then ofc her voice declined because of nodules but she was still able to deliver great performances when her voice was in good conditions, and her legacy remains untouchable.
Whitney had a naturally more powerful, darker voice, a chestier approach, a more robust head voice, and she was even more confident as a live performer, but saying that she was better than Mariah is a stretch.
They were both great at what they did. And so was Celine, who btw deserves more credit than she does because she’s just an incredible as Mariah and Whitney, and she preserved her voice even better than the other 2 did (aside from her recent neurological disease, which is beyond her control).

@@icydelight3693 Whitney was better. Deal with it lamb. Whitney possessed more vocal skills than Mariah and executed them live night after night in sheer excellence than Mariah. Whitney had a better tone, better diction, better resonance, better vibrato, better breath support--all around better connected voice. Whitney in her prime had no vocal weaknesses. Can’t say that about Mariah-well you can but you’d be lying. Even at the end of it all Whitney still sang 100% live, of course her voice wasn’t as it once was however she didn’t rely on lip sync performances of 10 years ago. These are the things that push Whitney into a category where she sits alone.
For me, a great singer is the ability for them to make me swoon and melt. Only Whitney and Dimash have that ability, there's just something about their tones that stir emotions in me.

Whitney is by far the better belter. Mariah's belting sounds a little bit pushed in my opinion. Her strength lies in agility, low notes and whistle register.
Mariah is good at styling. It's what makes her music post the Emotions album interesting. Before then, she's closer to a Whitney copy.
