    When you said you have no idea what is the connection with polymer clay I just could not belive you said you had no idea:).... Its to make cookie cutters, you know like the 3d printers???? U make a cirlce with an aluminium can that you have cutted or any other shape and then you use this tool around the aluminium. Try to make it thin of course....and you get the cutter. PPl use this way because buyin the cutters nowadays is very expensive... and with this you can make any shape you want and size you want, hope it helped.

    My husband bought me one for Christmas from Michael's and I really feel compelled to warn people to check reviews before buying one. Mine continually jammed despite following the directions to a t, it went back (I realize you're using a different brand).
    Some of the plastics sold to use in these pens are very brittle once extruded, the ones that aren't seem to be more expensive.
    I love your videos and you make such beautiful things with polymer clay but watching this and my personal experience and all I could think of was how much clay or clay tools you could buy instead of this thing with the same money.

    My husband found two 3D pens and a bunch of the refills at Goodwill! I've been wondering what to do with them. Never even thought to combine with the polymer clay! Very inspired.. you are right, so much potential. Could make stamps or custom texture tools, xmas ornaments.. hmmm. I'm going to play around and see what I can come up with. Thank you so much for sharing!

    I am glad that I watched your video. My ignorance of 3D pens caused me not to even inquire about them as I believed that you needed to use them with a 3D printer or a CAD program link. As I have enjoyed your many polymer tutorials I did see that my initial 3D pen beliefs were incorrect. I can easily see many applications incorporating polymer and plastic that I will be willing to try in the future. I’m thinking of light weight kinetic uses of both. Without your 3D pen intro and beneficial viewer comments I would not have envisioned the many applications and future projects I can utilize. Pretty smart for that company to have sent you that pen and expose us to explore the possibilities! ❤️

    Thank you SO MUCH for showing you first steps with the pen! This definitely brought back my enthusiasm in it. I got mine a few weeks ago and totally "failed" with it in my eyes since I only saw tutorials for cool (but not easy to make) figurines. After I saw that more people have the same probs like me, it motivates me to continue.. By the way, the idea to combine it with liquid clay is AMAZING!!!!! I hope you'll show the progresses you make... I'll follow. I think too, this technique is still at the beginning but it has definitely potential to be AMAZING for art....

    I use scribbler nano pen. I know I am late on this subject. But I did want to give some advise on this sucject. When you draw on glass or actate you want to use some elmers glue stick , the kind for kids craft. This will give the plastic something to stick too and leave a smooth and shiny finish on the glass side of what you draw. It does take alot of practice. Those 30 foot pieces of plastic you show in video wont go very far. I buy my plastic by the kilo. I have 30 colors/kilos sitting here.

      I imagine the hairspray has to be dry before taking a 3D pen to it - that plastic gets HOT.

    Interesting but I still do not see much use for it myself personally. Also haven't seen anything overly stunning that makes me want to try it either. I am saving up for two things already - a lathe for turning polymer clay, resin, and wood and a wet cut tile saw for cutting rocks which I will then sand and polish using the lathe. Thanks for sharing the video. I found it very informative. - Heidi

      I agree these samples I have made aren't particularly stunning... but you can't deny there is potential there for some truly stunning projects with some more thought and practice put into it. Not everyone will be interested in going through the process of figuring that out. I for one find it a fun and interesting challenge and will continue to see what can be done with this concept.

      The things you can do with a 3D printer pen are endless. You just need to learn how to master it. With a little bit of practice, you'll get there. I made a box, butterfly, small desktop monster chests, The Sims plumbob, and many more. And now I have an actual FDM 3D printer so I could create the bulky stuff with it. :)

    Cool product demo! I like the idea of using this for making hollow bead frames that can be covered completely with opaque clay. Maybe some funky bezels, as well. Could you make texture plates or is the plastic too rigid?

    • @PolymerClayTutor

      Thanks Kimberly! I agree there is potential there. I don't know about making texture sheets... maybe you could make some patterns that you could press into polymer clay, but making a whole sheet might not be very cost effective. I like the way you're thinking there though. Something definitely could be done there.

    Can you use it to kinda glue other objects together? A bit like a glue gun?

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  5 років тому +1

      No, the 3D filament isn't really very sticky so it wouldn't work as a hot glue gun replacement. I have seen a pen style of hot glue gun though. For gluing, you're going to want to use a regular glue gun for that, rather than this tool.

    • @tobuslieven
      @tobuslieven 5 років тому

      @@PolymerClayTutor I like that this pen is automatic for precise output. Auto glue guns I've seen are pretty expensive. I'll have to work on my technique.

    quality of that 3d pen model is really bad - I changed it 4 times and then got refund, also during a "printing" you will lose at least half of plastic filaments as a waste and with the same problems I met while using 3doodler pen

    • @PolymerClayTutor

      Hi Skyblock, that was not my experience at all. I had very little waste and the unit worked perfectly for me. I haven't tried any other pen so I can't say how it compares to other brands, but I had no issue with this one other than I wasn't that good at it... yet.

      of course, madam, because for demo & ads they all usually send only already tested samples but shop seller showed me about 20-30 opened returned boxes and they even didn't demand compensation for used filament because many returns due to numerous product defects

  • @NitedevilDarkwatch
    @NitedevilDarkwatch 6 років тому +1

    I'm sorry to say but you really don't know how a 3D printer pen works. First you should never ever leave cold filament inside it. When the filament gets very short, you need to pull it out and replace it. Secondly, that temperature is way too hot, that's why it's coming out blobby. You need to lower the temperature and you'll see the difference immediately. And before anyone attacks me and call me out, I have two 3D printer pens, one of them with dual nozzles and I also have a 3D Printer. So I know a thing or two about 3D printing. Not going to call myself an expert but it's unfair stating how messy it looks when you don't actually really know how to use it.

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  6 років тому +1

      Fair enough! You obviously know a lot more about working with 3-D pens than I do. Keep in mind, 95% of people trying a 3-D pen for the first time are going to run into issues like I did. The packaging had hardly any instructions. At the time of making this video, I had looked at videos out there and no one mentioned the things that you did. If I had found some decent info, I probably would have given better advice. I will have to get out that pen and try it again. Thanks for sharing!

    • @NitedevilDarkwatch
      @NitedevilDarkwatch 6 років тому +2

      There is some information online and I found very helpful videos on the 3D printer pen. I'm sorry if my comment might have sound a bit aggressive, but try to understand that some people already see it as messy and mainly the reason why is because of videos like these. Plus people don't listen when you tell them that you just started using this so it might not look clean when you start using for the first time.
      Those are my tips to you to help you out to make cleaner prints:
      1. Never cut filament and leave it in a coil. You can wrap the coil around your wrist.
      2. Never leave cold filament. You're asking for jammed filament in the nozzle which will cause damage to the pen.
      3. When switching between 1 filament to the other, always make sure to use the correct temperature, because your filament is coming out all bubbly.
      4. When switching from a filament that requires different temperature from other filaments, like ABS, always clean your nozzle from that filament. Example: If you're using ABS and switching to PLA, raise the temperature to the required temperature of ABS which is roughly around 230°C/446F and extrude the PLA (see your 3D Pen manual to see how to extrude as not all pens work the same way). PLA is going to come out bubble but that's ok. Retract the PLA filament, change the temperature required to extrude PLA and let it cool down. Once it has the right temperature for PLA, insert the PLA again.
      5. If using ABS, make sure that you're working in a ventilated area and it is important to mention this to the audience because ABS is toxic. You're luck that you didn't end up with a migraine like I did, or even worse, respiratory system abrasion.
      6. I suggest you to start slow if you want cleaner prints. And don't draw in the air because that is still a feat that requires a lot of practice because you need to build a structure first in order to build in the "AIR". I know adverts show it like that but you cannot constructs objects in thin air. Gravity doesn't allow you that. You could always print a design on an A4 paper, buy a heat resist transparent working mat for 3D printer pens and put your printed design under. Some of these mats come with grids and they're very cheap on ebay.
      7. For the love of God it is not a glorified glue gun. Us people that using 3D pens find it rather offensive when somebody calls it a glue gun. It is not a glue gun because it is not extruding glue. It's a portable FDM printer. FDM stands for Fused Deposition Modeling, which what it does is melts plastic and fuses it together. So please I beg you not to call it a glue gun because you can glue almost everything with a glue gun, but you cannot "glue" everything with an FDM 3D Pen. Plus as you can see, you need to master it to make it work properly.
      8. If you have any stranglers, you can always use a nail clipper or if you're more professional, use a tiny side cutter and cut them off.
      9. Like in the Polymer Clay community, we do not waste any of the material. Usually, we tend to use PLA only because it's none-toxic. So with the remaining piece of unused filaments, stranglers or pieces that you cut off from your design and failed projects, we melt them in the kitchen oven and create other stuff with them like chopping boards for example.
      10. Last but not least, get more knowledge on the material you're using because it requires an environment change. Like for example PLA can be printed inside because it doesn't release any nasty fumes and is non-toxic. But ABS is toxic and the fumes can cause harm to your eyes and respiratory system, so it needs a well ventilated area to work with.
      I hope my tips will help you and if you need anything else, just message me. I'd be glad to help you out and sorry for the long post.

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  6 років тому +1

      Thanks so much for your detailed answer! I will have to read through it a few times to glean it all!. Do not worry one bit about your first comment being aggressive... You were only stating the truth... no unkindness or rudeness was implied. (I'm pretty blunt and direct myself so I'm good with straight talk!) On the topic of calling it a glorified glue gun, I'd have to go back and watch my video to see if I had said that, but if I did, it was only to describe how it melts the filament, not to describe it's function. Sometimes I like to use a familiar object to describe something new to someone. Let's face it, they are similarly designed tools, even though their function is completely different. Thanks for all the tips! Maybe the next time I do a video, using a 3-D Pen, I will be much more knowledgeable on the subject, because of your helpful information? Let's hope anyway! 🙂
