I have previously made pens, but not as elegant as these. And the idea of putting CA glue on as a protectant instead of wax made me sit up and pay attention. Thank you for the easy to follow directions. I may well give a pen kit a try now!

Sanding in a figure of eight pattern ensures you don't sand unevenly. Great tute.

Thanks *ever* so much for including all the info regarding the products you use! I had NO idea until watching this vid just now that I can’t simply use ANY CA glue; it never occurred to me that there are differences! (facepalm) (Derp!) I don’t make pens but have tried CA on other items and have had them crack, craze, and otherwise not work well, and now I know why! Am off to go check out the Novus products; I appreciate the tips a lot! 💋

I was waiting for you to show how you made the glass like decoration on the pen, the part that is really clear. Wish it were clay that clear!

Thanks for making this video. I’ve wanted to try this but never been quite sure what to do. You make it look possible but I’m sure it’s really tricky!

    • @MotleyWoods

Honestly it was way less tricky that I expected - though I’ve been doing it for a while on a lathe so, take that with a grain of salt. When you put it on just rub it immediately- and if you’re really nervous you could always practice on some scraps or a covered Bic barrel (it can crack when the barrel flexes though so I don’t recommend finishing Bics or other plastic barreled pens that way.)
Worst case you can also sand it all off and try again - though with hand sanding that’s much worse than it sounds!
But the GluBoost was a very forgiving finish.
Similar to when I finally tried Mercury Flex for the first time, and it was much easier than my previous one - very liquidy glues formulated to require go on surprisingly well.

Have you tried UV clear gloss resin hard ~ which you can rub on in same manner and dry with UV resin torch!

Nice to see the PPE you use. CA can cause birth defects in pregnant women, or cause breathing issues. Lovely tutorial.

Ordered brand new 10.5 knitting needles online. They arrived today. They do not fit the slimline pen kit.

I have always thought that Gluboost is repackaged Mercury CA

Having used both, I don’t think so. That said, I have a respiratory reaction to most CAs (flu-like symptoms) so use odorless from BSI as my primary CA.

Hi thank you for sharing your talent. I started with bic pens which sometimes melted in oven so I would like to do with pen kit as you do. Could you please give me address where to buy them. Thank you

    • @MotleyWoods
      @MotleyWoods  4 роки тому +1

If your oven goes too much over 300F, Bics will melt. Under that I think you’re likely okay.
You can get pen kits all over. I don’t know your country so it’s hard to tell you where to buy from. A good starter pen kit is the cheap “slimline” (or “7mm standard” - the same thing) kit.
There’s more expensive slimlines, but just get the cheapest a supplier in your country makes to start with.
For example, in the US, I’ve bought kits from both exotic blanks and penn state industries.
