Lino Dainese the founder of Dainese actually came up with the idea on a napkin of an airbag system for motorcycle riders in 1994 and has been in development ever since. Most think this is new technology but had been been developed by Dainese for a long long time now. -Dainese NYC employee

Mike I have a question regarding these suits. Maybe I missed it in your video. Since these new suits have airbags in them. Do the riders still have the body armor inside the suits? Or did the airbags replace the shoulder, elbow, chest, and back armor?
back when i was 20 and at my most competitive i was fearless, then one time i had a crash and got hurt and i couldn't ride for three days! Then every crash after that i was slightly older and each injury took slightly longer to heal.... i'm almost 60 now.
wow! i knew we hungarians invented everything ( *sarcasm ON* ), but reading this pattern detail about the motorcycle airbag was a real surprise! and knowing how things "worked" in this country back in the 70s (and partially today) i can see why we didn't conquer the biker world with this invention.
@@ghsf1234 I'm thinking you forget it was a completely different time. You seem like you dont get it at all though. People used to smoke and do just about everything, an example of a world class athlete would be Ben Hogan he never put a cigarette down to hit a golf ball. He would have also probably been smoking homegrown tobacco hand rolled and unfiltered which was actually when tobacco was no where near as bad for you as it is with all the crap they add to it. They also raced without pretty much any protective gear, people used to be a lot tougher hence a badass.
It is amazing, almost surreal, how little protection motorcyclists had before the late 70's. What took so long? Football ( North American ) players had protection. Hockey players had protection ( ok, not all wore helmets ). Maybe motorcyclists related more with rugby players. I don't know? Its just that it seems to me that all this could have happened a lot earlier. Thanks for the history lesson.
Airbag systems seem to have suddenly made huge improvements in the last couple of years. I have a hit-air vest. Will probably substitute with an electronic one in a couple of year.s
I think the "elbows down" styles was introduced by Ben Spies way before Marquez....in fact I think one of Spies's nicknames was "elbows" for that reason...I could be wrong though....
I'd say they should add more airbags along the arms and legs too if possible. If I was ridding in motoGP, I'd want to look like the Michillin man when I flip off the bike in a high side or low side.
When I ride my bike on the street I wear full armored gear, the reason I wear full armor is I was born with spina bifida and have had several back fusion surgeries, and I’ll have more later in life so I try to ride as safe as possible
Almost all airbag systems have a back protector which houses the electronics and gas canister(s). The only ones that don't are for urban riders. Helite, Alpinestars and InMotion based airbags have built in back protectors.
I know these are pro level things but can a regular street cat ride/learn to ride these beautiful beasts of speed and ride around at skill dependent top speeds on these special tracks wearing these special gears and feel all kinds of awesomenesses? Plis?
There where many guys that where getting there elbow down on the pavement long before Maequez came into the sport. some guys in motoamerica, superibke n motogp. i would say right about 94 ,95,96 guys where getting so low n fast in the corners. that alot of suits where modified to make sure that the elbow would slide n not grab as it came in contact with the tarmac.. i love marquez but us 2 stroke guys. could get those bikes way, way over n come right up out of the deep corners!!!
Jean-Phillipe Ruggia was first to elbow slide in 1988 250cc MotoGP. Casey Stoner was also an elbow slider. Funny how Marquez gets the accolades for it. Good video though
let me tell you something. I do love your videos, but as a spanish viewer, I hate when you say marquez wrong. The stressed letter is the a, not the e. You should say maaaarquez, not marqueeeez. Hope you'll read it :") keep the good work mate
I'm Hungarian so this little fact that we came up with the airbags for suits, really made me happy.
As an engineering student, I love your scientific analysis of all aspects of riding, I'm always excited when you have a new video

It's amazing how far tech has come...and I'm glad that the airbag has made it to the consumer market! Loving the videos! Keep them coming! 👌🏼👌🏼

@Kyle Micena I can only confirm
Awesome info bruh!
Hopefully one day the air bags will become cheaper so nearly every rider can have one

Very cool and informative video. Everytime I see that highside by Marquez I cringe. That had to have hurt.

Great video as always, mike 👍🏼
Nick Hayden was the best .....long live the Kentucky kid (69) RIP 😢
I wear my Hit-Air vest just about every time I ride. It can save your neck and spine from snapping in a bad spill

This comment needs to be in the top.
I tested a Helite airbag vest at the shop, amazing technology indeed, when that thing inflates it feels like being hugged by The Hulk lol
How did you test it? Smashed yourself against a wall?
So right, there is always something to learn
I always wanted to know whether the motogp racers drink water during the races, is it possible?
Its a very good idea

The idea to put airbags in the suit is flipping genius

Brilliant job bro!
What's the meaning of led lights in suit
They show the status of the Airbag. On/off, etc. And also the battery level.
Interessante video en prachtige beelden. Ga zo door. 😎 Mijn complimenten! 👍🏼

Can you do a video on that rs250?
Do MotoGP riders typically wear separate back protectors in addition to an airbag equipped suit?

Can you make videos on how to keep your body safe while crashing?
I have a question, why racing suit doesn't have chest protector?
Is chest injury rare in racing?
Yeah
You wont fall on your belly or chest
They HAVE chest protection.
