Jim’s right. You’re kind of a big f’ing deal in this extremely narrow fandom. And come to think of it Derek does have one of those ASMR “velvet fog”voices. Bwahahaha!
@@VanOaksProps Laugh all you want my friend, but the view & sub counts on those ASMR videos speak for themselves. I think the UA-cam maker space is an untapped ASMR goldmine for one reason: SANDING! This guy is great. We made 4 tombstones (and soon a 5th for hiding a projector and fog machine) using his other video and while they aren't as good as his, they turned out great!

When I look at my stuff; especially from 5 years ago or more I can hardly stand it. I only see the flaws. That’s why I end up giving 90% of it away. I find it really hard to keep let alone sell. I’ve been hanging around the FX and garage kit fandom for over 30 years, and I’ve learned quite a bit; but I can’t ever get past my imposter syndrome. I make stuff because I can’t imagine not trying, but it’s always been all but impossible to enjoy. I guess my point is give yourself a break if you can.
Don’t be so critical of your work; everyone’s tombstones look different. It’s part of what makes them unique to your skill level and they will improve over time. Enjoy them for their originality.
Another excellent and simple tutorial. I am constantly messing with and adjusting lighting. I too use a couple front of the display floods. Since I don’t have a backdrop for shadows, I have another pair of floods towards the back of the graveyard and projecting under a large tree. These lights are deeper green, blue and purple that slowly change between those colors. Fog helps complete the backdrop. BTW. I have been using LIFX RGB floods, these have terrific adjustability and excellent color rendering.
As an artist I think about different light sources a lot which is why I was surprised I didn't think of the suggested lighting before! Super good tip that keeps the scene immersive still!

Coming back to this video to vouch for the smart lights featured at 0:38 Mine are now installed and they are awesome. Their casings are heavy duty aluminum.. maybe even steel. The wiring is a sturdy waterproof connection and we are really pleased with the results. Only wish they were HomeKit enabled but they do offer google and other integrations. Thanks for the rec!
Derek has created another fabulous video. I’d encourage anyone who enjoyed this video to take a look at Derek’s other lighting videos. Combine any of them together and your Halloween display will find another level. Happy Halloween all! And Derek can’t wait to see this year’s display!
I just dropped $400 on Novostella updating my 1970s Christmas green floodlights. Derek, you get to explain it to my wife when it hits the CC statement. Be on the lookout for a six foot tall (gracefully) middle-aged blonde swinging Bluetooth lights medieval Morningstar style.
Hi thank you for your videos, they are good and easy to follow. Where can we go to see your Halloween display I’ve looked in the history of your videos but I can’t find it.
For some reason, lLighting always seems to be a generally underserved topic in the community, and it's great to see it get some well-deserved attention from your channel....this video in particular suppies a very clearly explained / demonstrated approach, and easily applied techniques. Very nice! (BTW- how much of a luxury are these app controlled RGB floodlights?!?)
The lights aren’t as big of a luxury as you’d think. About $30/light. Considering it’s an all in one solution that doesn’t require an extra fixture or gels and losing the remote is nearly impossible, it’s pretty affordable.
@@VanOaksProps Oh, no doubt! I guess I meant 'luxury' relative to Ye Olden Days when intoducing color in my display meant those bulky incandescent outdoor floods...the ability to adjust lighting intensity and change colors on the fly is just such an incredible improvement. And that is before considering how weatherproof / resistant the casings are and the reduction in impact at the breaker box, etc. Comparing those chunky single-color, screaming-hot power hogs to these Bluetooth connected LED boxes makes me feel like spooky George Jetson living in the future. :)
I love your videos! I was wondering if you had any experience using an LED strip as a flood light. I don't know how directional the individual lenses on an LED strip are.
There's a link to the build video for the small LED spotlights in the video description if you want to see how they were made and what parts were used.
👍😎🔥😁 Cool!!! I Have The Big Flood Lights & Adjustable Stakes!!! Then I Pair With Regular & Multi Colored Strobes!!! Thank You For The Awesome Info!!!! Do You Think I Should Upgrade To Leds?
Great video. I used to be a theatrical lighting tech in a past life. These would've been much simpler back then. My question is; are there barn doors or snoots available for the floodlights to control the light spill on a scene or are you up to your own devices making your own gobos? Thanx!
I love it. Question though, do you have an issue with the RCA connections when used exterior? I wasn't sure if they would cause a short if they got wet. I have exterior power supplies and want to utilize the RCA connections, but wasn't sure about them being in the rain.
Hey bro quick question, for my front yard I’m still using old school flood lights and looking to upgrade to LED I had about 4-5 lights what wattage would you suggest for the LEDS
Got a question... I have some metal Sanderson sisters yard stakes that I want to shadow onto the house. I keep getting fuzzy shadows instead of crisp. My cell phone light works perfect...but can't keep that outside now can I... Any suggestions?
These lights Novostella 25W BLink Smart LED Floodlights can they be hacked? Thinking of using an Arduino to create lightning effectssince they have cool white available within the flood.
I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion about the bluetooth versus wifi floodlights? I have a different brand of bluetooth lights that did not respond well. I realize it could be the brand. I have a wifi extender, so I'm debating on which Novostella lights to purchase. I'd appreciate anyone's input.

Are 2 floods enough for the front display too? Trying to gauge how many 25w I may need. Or if I need to go a bit more power and keep a lower quantity?
We use 3 for our display, which is roughly 35-40’ wide and 15’ deep.

Great question. I don't know that there are, but you could always use some plastic sheets to make some or there's always black wrap.
@@VanOaksProps thanx for the feedback. Since the LEDs aren't heat-inducive, using cut-to-fit PVC sheets would work.

I'd look into waterproof connectors if you get rain. Here in Los Angeles weather is rarely an issue, so the low voltage power via RCA is fine.
We bought the recommended lights in this video and they got heavy rain last week and area still working perfectly! 👍🏻
