    Great tire for the money. Very long lasting and more than enough grip for 90 percent of riders at track days.

    I agree with all of your reasons for using tire warmers in an advance group. For me I ran them intentionally without warmers. Also, for me there seemed to be a 3-4psi range in pressure that all worked the same. Great video.

    • @ChasingTenths
      @ChasingTenths  2 роки тому

      Thats brilliant Jason, I am curious to know how did you find them without warmers, any thermal degradation issues or cold tears or blisters on the surface, were you happy with everything? And what were the ambient temperatures that day?
      it would be very interesting to know your feedback.

    • @lillnemo1
      @lillnemo1 Рік тому

      You CAN run them cold, but they last a bit longer if you preheat (keep heated all day) AND you can go full throttle from 1st corner with warmers. Buy a cheap set of warmers

  • @layingblacklines
    @layingblacklines 2 роки тому +3

    Regarding the warmers, I've run Supercorsa SC1/SC2 and the old Metzeler CompK slicks without warmers. They are not plastic blocks when cold and work perfectly fine. If you push too hard too fast maybe you could overcome them, but tearing is likely to be a greater issue. People also underestimate how well you warm your tyres by riding and overestimate their tyre warmers. Leave tyre warmers on for an hour and the surface will be hot but the rim probably lukewarm at best. But go out on cold slicks in the morning, do your 3 sighting laps and come into the pits to check. You'll find that not only are your tyres hot but your rim will be too. Who knew that 100+ hp would heat your tyres quicker than 1KW of tyre blankets..

    ive used them been through 2 sets as track and intermediate race...really like them...the pressure is about right. I have a race this sunday, and the tyres have been on since last jan 2020, and due to covid have not been used. Still bit of life but debating to use them again, or get a new set as not sure on shelf life sitting on the bike for 1.5 years not used...

    • @ChasingTenths
      @ChasingTenths  2 роки тому

      Thats a long time mate with no use, if the tyres were lifted from the ground , bike on paddock stands, you should be ok , with no flat spot issues. Also, a lot of people underestimate the effect of cold ground passing through tyre rubber if not on paddock stands. Also, if you think your wear is already less then you might as well buy a new set or rear . Let me know how it goes , I wish you well on your race after so long , you must feel slightly rusty with all due respect.

    hahaha,,,sorry,i know i shouldn't lol,but the pic you choose to demonstrates how tire warmer are crucial for the first few laps and the confidence ...woaw,that is shocking,after seeing it i guess a lot of riders will run fast to their fav dealer and get a tire warmer set right there LOL. a very important point for me is that,tire warmers kind of extracts the max of the lifespan of the tires ,and their performance too .
    as for the racetec TD i've been on the fence to try a set.i uses pirelli SC's tires for track days,but hey,they're the same company in fact and i heard good things about the TD's i think i'm gonna try a set on my track day R1's....funny enough we're both the same kind of aggressive rider on the brakes. people say i'm a devil on the brakes and true the SC front holds very well in that matter .on another note, you pointed out DAVE MOSS as credible reference in matter of suspension.well said man. for me, DAVE MOSS is my guru in matter of suspension..to me the suspension set up being the most important part for fast lap times,and general stability of the bike.
    very good detailed review of those tires Abhi. as usual, very informative.

    • @ChasingTenths
      @ChasingTenths  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Sylvan as always , very good points there , I especially like the point where you mentioned that tyre warmers can actually in a way extract the maximum from a tyre. Really good point that . Dave is really clever , I quite like him very much and he always says sensible stuff and Is very just to people from all riding groups .
      Good luck on track this coming year mate , see how you get on , if you are going well on your Perreli tyres then you don’t need to move on to something else . Something isn’t broken then don’t fix it but feel free to try , if you do then let me know . Cheers

    Hey Abhi, as always you push out good material here for us 'track junkies'. Although I'm in Inters I don't think I'm worthy of any slicks, but then I do have to ride my bike to the circuit and my Mrs follows in the S3 with all the track crap I need for the day. and slicks won't pass the MOT at InMoto for me, even tho I sort of know the guys there. I have a set of Michelin Cup 2s ready for 2022 season which are basically a slick compound with a few small cuts in the middle and 3 inches of bare slick from the outside and are actually road legal, it has been raved about and tested by the best, even ex racer Sylvain Guintoli and Dave Moss, the suspension Guru. I got in touch with Sylvain and Dave last year for some recommendations on cold temp settings, they're awesome guys, like yourself because they take the time to reply with good sound advice. I've had the suspension setup by RaceLab, turning an awesome handling bike into a super awesome handling bike. As you yourself know 😉

    • @ChasingTenths
      @ChasingTenths  2 роки тому

      Hey Gio , Looks like you ticked all the boxes there , those Cup 2s are brilliant tyres if someone isn't wanting to move to slicks yet or has a road/track bike. Interesting video. We used them at Jerez in sept, around 39 degrees ambient, we shared a Daytona 675 and used a rear in a day, when it got near the wear limit it seemed to give quite a few warnings, then my mate had a massive high side on a new one in session 2. I still love the tyre and want to use again but equally quite a few have said they get quite sketchy in those upper ambient temperatures. Would be good to get views on how they have been in the hotter temps

      Very interesting point, I started using them in march 2020 and that was just before covid properly came but all euros were cancelled or postponed after that because of Covid so I never did a euro since 2019, it would be interesting to try it at high temps, I had a few mates who tried it in Mugello at 38 degrees with no issues and Estoril . But you are absolutely right about early warning wear signs, on my 6th trackday this year , I was getting lovely slides and I knew the tire is probably saying change me and next trackday I changed it. Thanks for the detailed comment, I am even more curious to run it in high temps , I am in Almiera in April so that would be interesting.

      Dont worry about being quick enough , if you are in the middle to high novice times then you'll be fine but what you need to get used to is the overall profile of the slick , when leaning , you will feel you are dipping in to the corner abruptly but thats the nature of a slick profile. In the long run of things you'll start to enjoy the benefits the slicks give you , you can take many liberties on a slick ;) with due care off course. Thanks for commenting and watching Rob

      Thank you for the kind words ,
      It’s similar but the slick tyres have slightly different construct to road legal SC2 Supercorsa
      Especially the Metzeler TD as the aspect ratio of that is only 55
      It’s a less peaky tyre
      Which means the ergonomics of the bike slightly changes so if you have OEM Rearsets on your bike then your ground clearance is reduced so your foot pegs might touch the ground and you might need to raise the footpegs if you have after market footrests

    • @ChasingTenths
      @ChasingTenths  2 роки тому

      I know what you mean mate, it’s circuit depending . In the U.K. we have very smooth tracks except 3 plus I run a over suspension device in the rear which I believe is helping the rear tyre life . Or may be it’s the very smooth power delivery of the RSV4 RF , they normally have very smooth predictable power. I am also in the fast group always and times are good but this year I am racing and I noticed on the test day at when my i2m temperature sensors were showing the temperature displayed of the rear tyre while riding on track to be 76 degrees, the rear started sliding quite a bit so I then moved to SC2 Pirelli slick in the rear and I used the SC2 for the 5 hour endurance race and it was the best decision because even though the metzeler lasts very long but I noticed when it got very very hot , it started to slide a lot

    This is a great video! I've just bought an Aprilia RSV4 2010 with these tires. I'm an intermediate rider moving up from a CBR600RR (previously rode an R1 on road) but I have never run slicks. I've got a TD booked a Donny next week and am unsure of how much life the tires have in them. I know they have wear indicators but the front looks rather low, FL-4.3mm FR-2.5mm & RL-5mm RR-3.5mm) can you offer any advice on when to change? I know to change them for my own peace of mind but if I could squeeze another day at least would be good

      Thank you for the kind words, sorry for the late reply , I was at track for a 2 days trackday ,
      I would change the tires after 4 Trackdays or maximum 5
      I would say that’s plenty of heat cycles, even if the wear markers are there, I think 5 Trackdays have plenty of heat cycles and then you take the bike home then bring to track , the cool down and heat up effect ,
      Top advice directly from metzeler, after a trackday when you are packing up , keep the tyres in warmers, they don’t get brittle ish easily or get hard and slidy

    • @ChasingTenths
      @ChasingTenths  Рік тому +1

      Thanks David for the kind words, I would say Pirelli and Dunlop slicks are Rear 24 psi and front 33 psi but also these days you have so many different aspect ratios front and rear , you have the front in 125 aspect ratio and rear 190/55 , 190/60, 200/55, 200/60, 200/65 , plus pressures can depend on one's talent level and the track and ambient temps on that particular day... the best thing is to speak to the tyre tech guy on the track on that particular day and then you can determine the right pressures for you....lower pressures on the rear will definitely give you more grip but you also need to think with the front especially, the 125 aspect ratio has a bigger side tyre wall so it needs unto 36 psi hot on the front because the tyre wall squeezes when you brake really hard so to maintain that squeeze from over squeezing you need slightly higher pressures. I was racing few months back in the endurance championship and we had Gary Johnson the Isle of Man racer racing with us, he is slightly heavy and was using 125 aspect ratio front , he had 38 psi hot in front.. I wasshocked.

      that's a very very good question, the profile of the Metzeler K1 Racetec RR is a road tyre profile and not a thorough bred race slick like the Metzeler TD, I just didn't want to feel odd ergonomics in the front compared to the back and now thinking about it, I never thought of using a Metzeler CompK slick in the front too, I simply went with Pirelli SC1 front slick as I took loads of liberties with it in Jerez and Portimao and a record breaking hot temperature Donington and it kept me on tarmac even though I was a bit silly at times. thanks for watching and asking a stunning question.

    • @ChasingTenths

      Great question Tristan, the profile of this tyre is totally a race slick profile where as the supercorsa is a more of a road profile, I used supercorsa many times on the circuit and when I switched to the TD slick the bike will fall into corners straight away just like any other slick , it takes some getting used to but the grip is fantastic , more contact patch and coming out of corners the Metz TD is much more superior. Don’t get me wrong a fast rider will be epic even on a supercorsa but these Metz have all the same physical characteristics of a race slick with not much drawback at all and much better than supercorsas

    • @tristandrew5903
      @tristandrew5903 2 роки тому +1

      I never used slicks as I know I don't get the most from a supercorsa and so have tended to stick to them as scrubs rather than spend double and not be able to use the performance. Definitely start with Pirelli supercorsas sc1 and sc2 combination because the profile of that tire is still very similar to the S22 so it won’t be a total shock to your system as slicks can have very aggressive profile and sometimes you turn into the corner and it feels like you will have a sudden unexpected lean (dip). I do a lot of work with Pirelli British superbike tire guys, they never reverse a single one on the bikes of BSB boys or even in our national endurance championship they refuse to reverse it due to liability / claim risks . If someone wants to reserve it’s absolutely up to them and they can do it as many times as they want but Pirelli fitters won’t do it in the paddock … And I wasn’t going to shout it out loud on a public forum like UA-cam and encourage people to do it . If Pirelli tire engineers fit and change tyres by the book , that’s what I will be promoting too. If you wish me to give you their direct contact then please do let me know, I’ll get you In touch with Pirelli U.K.
