This channel is so relaxing to Watch after a long day of work. Soothing, especially the elephants and the little girl singing

Be terrified ! Lol, i am at 23 out of 24 etudes and this one is top 2 that i fear the most. It has a way of wanting to cramp your thumb that persists (section A and A'). It's insidious, and the utmostly depressing hopeless (though beautiful) music can put a spell on you, it does on me. The A' return part is even more so. Even though it ends in E major. This etude requires so much work with so few notes on every bar.

Set the playback speed to x.75 and it should be slower and easier to understand.

I play ALL right hand section A with 1-2 fingering . I used to learn the piece with 2-1 intermixed with 1-2 for months but it was counter productive and I eventually ditched it and made it all 1-2. Chopin most certainly intended only 1-2 fingerings (except in the A' return) as that is the only way to release the fifth finger without developing tension in the thumb when doing the marked slur playing finger 2 after 1 as : D#-B -> E you are not supposed to hold B when playing E.
I was surprised that you thought the D7 chord on the left hand D-F#-C -D is a difficult stretch. I struggle with the right hand (section A) but never though that left hand D7 required large hand. Also i never cross over thumb in the left hand broken chords but i think i need to.
I think my hand is average size with medium thumb and this is challenging. Your tutorial is superb and your playing is excellent. I think my hand is probably slightly smaller making this etude more difficult.

Thank you for this, dear Paul! What do you think in terms of technical gain this etude brings the hand? It is such a peculiar problem, I haven't found it in other works of Chopin. Is it the stability of the knuckles bridge? The independence of the thumb? And what is the role of the three notations (dotted, undotted, and the appoggiatura)?

I'm not at Paul's level, but those are great questions. Paul said the intent is a study in light touch (leggiero section B). As for section A, it may well be an etude in patience (lol!) because it's devilishly difficult and zero comfort and will provide you with bad depressing sounds and broken phrases for months until a high mastery is reached.
The huge contrasts with zero transition between section A and B are had to accept musically as well as play, not to mention the odd ending that makes hardly sense as if a page was missing. One thing i noticed is that if you attempt to play section A crisp and with good tone while learning it, the hand will tense and thumb will cramp. Huge patience required. Try the A' return section, it's as demoralizing and as discouraging in difficulty than any piano piece and does not even have to be fast to be hard which makes it the more daunting. What's more musically it's creates a big nostalgia that Chopin leaves unresolved and that's not easy to handle emotionally either.

    Lovely, thank you.
Could you make a tutorial of Chopins Nocturne op 37, no 1 please? It is such an underrated yet elegant piece. It's my current homework and I would love to hear it from you.

hello Maestro..I waste a lot in your answer..because I can't find it anywhere..and nobody can give it to me..I have a serious problem.I have a small hand and therefore my problem is already playing the first notes .I am not able! the second finger goes to the F# and the fifth to the B..it takes a lot of effort..how can I fix it.I tried to put the first finger on the F# and the fifth on the B..dropping the F# on G.but it doesn't you feel the same effect! Do you advise me to leave it alone? Please answer me. Greetings from Italy

You're describing not being able to stretch a fourth which makes no sense. Think again about what you wrote before asking.
