Civilian clothing is supposed to show your status and outline the desired contours of your body, work clothes are for work, etc. Don´t get me wrong I like the movie but this scene when she rips the clothes plus the "we call that slavery" is just cringy as fuck.
I think the "armour" bit is metaphorical for practical vs aesthetic clothing. I for one, being a programmer, agree with prioritising practicality, functionality, and efficiency over looks.
