I love watching Carol play this game. I specifically seek out the all the episodes she’s in. She’s really good at Password and it’s fun watching her expressions and antics. She’s really one of a kind.
I also love these older episodes - and Carol and Peter were wonderful. You can see Peter always trying to hide his right hand after his teenage injury - but he didn't need to - it didn't matter to viewers or fans!
Love, love, love Carol and Peter playing Password! Excellent players, really want to help contestants win, and are hilarious! I always feel so intelligent when I think of the same clues as Peter. 😄👏👍👍❤️
@@marycook1644 thank you very much. Sadly I discovered this after he passed away. I had known he was on the show and he talked about it but I never knew a video existed. It's also very weird as it's the only video or film footage of my father as a young man so it's wonderful to have that.
"Slam" and "Dunk" were Both Mystery /Gues(st) Words .!.. o.O🤣😂😂😂😂😆😂😂😂 Now I'll have to (Gladly) go thru all episodes of this lovely show to find out (!)..
This is funnier than anything they pass off as comedy on TV these days (and certainly more decent) - and great brain exercise too (also in contrast to modern comedy lol).
When I go visit a family friend, i'm forced to watch "comedies" on their TV. I've noticed alot of them are un-funny, with a laugh-track faking the laughter. It's an insult to my intelligence. They try tricking you what was said was funny, when it wasn't.
"For the woman who does dishes without help"? My, how things have changed. For "pleasure," I would have said "enjoyment." But probably not if i were on the show. Then I would have been too nervous to think of any good words!
So much fun for me to see this - thank you for the upload! Carol was pregnant here with her first-born (Carrie Hamilton) who would make her "debut" in early December 1963.
I think both Carol Burnett and Betty White were the pearls of password. It is interesting to see how every Star contestant becomes so Cutthroat competitive. I guess performers never like to lose.
Actually if your partner gives an “illegal” clue (like “swimming pool”, which is two words) you’re better off saying the answer like Carol did, so the other team doesn’t get a chance...
I'm surprised Carol didn't use her face and voice, maybe a little body language, and say "feeeeling". I think that might have worked. If everyone could quit laughing long enough! 😂
When Peter Lawford is doing the lighting round. The word taxes come up Was Peter Lawford having trouble with his taxes. I was just a kid back 1963. I was in the 3 grade.
...printing is expensive these days...EVERYTHING IS ON GOOGLE...you can find a set at a garage or estate sale?...acid in the paper to make it bright...rots the paper!!! i grew up with a 50's set of Collier's...most are in the dump..
Really? For whom? Women who couldn’t get credit cards in their name? Rampant racism? For whom was it simpler? Vietnam war was raging, Kennedy was assassinated, civil unrest everywhere. Do you mean when people had manners? They are on tv- they have to have manners. Being naive to all the events happening doesn’t mean times were simpler.
Uh, it was miserable then too. Less visible. Vietnam war was going on, all sorts of civil unrest as well. You see a glimpse of a fun game where people come and on their best behavior- not an accurate indicator. People might have been more naive, and people “ stayed” in their place like women and minorities.

Okay, this would have to be done right but I think certainly Carol Burnett if not Lawford could have pulled this off: 4 "Pleasure" simply and I think in one clue it could be done with the single word… "Pain," YET said in that Password-ian way denoting an opposite and making sure to tilt one's head after saying "Paaain" (while tilting one's head slightly the other direction - before then slightly tilting it in the other direction AFTER the word is spoken…). Done just right, that would've gotten I think the answer in one clue (if not two) and because you're not gesturing pain, you would have gotten away with it as many players do with the head tilt denoting opposite :-).
17:30 It's interesting how certain phrases weren't popular back in the 60s, like "business or pleasure". I would have said the word business, with the opposite being pleasure.
Often when Peter played you could visibly see his irritation when Allen Ludden would say 5 seconds remaining Peter. And Peter would grumble something back like ALL RIGHT!! Or I know! know.!
I think "Tattoo" could have possibly been guest in one clue if, again as mentioned below in my other comment, done just right. You might have gotten a hand slap but would've gotten away if you did it quickly saying with a smile, "Sailor" while very quickly glancing at your right or left arm :-) No big giant gestures, just a quick subtle glance.
Randy Wild it’s like a ghost sound echoing before hand. You can hear the bells or when someone make a loud sound about 2-3 second before. Every one of these videos
Why would Allen even go there, overlooking that SHE may have her own career, but comes off a little sexist by skipping over her, and asking what the husband did instead?
His record was 12 seconds in a lightning round. I’ve looked everywhere for it. An internet search brought up this video - not the one, but still a great episode!
A young Patty Duke as Peter Lawfords partner!!!? Has anyone noticed the trend of having potential actors as contestants? This password show aired 1 month before the Patty Duke show aired. Coincidence? She was introduced as Pat and called Patty by Allen Ludden. I think her name was altered to somehow protect the upcoming series. Could be wrong but having fun with this one! Patty often played on the much later show Password Plus. Would like to hear from Password on this. Peter Lawford was one of the producers of the Patty Duke show!!!
Although it would be a tough one, for "Infantry" it might be worth a stab at trying for "Baby" (to elicit "Infant") and then making gestures indicating that that's correct... but then maybe outstretching your hand and saying... "Military" ... (as I said, it would be a tough one it may not work but that may be the fastest way to the word - 1 of the toughest - if not THE toughest - I've ever seen in the lightning round). There is another thought: they are much looser with the rules as regards the lightning round and if I were Lawford and got the contestant to elicit " Infant" I might have quickly argued "Now come on, Allan, that's a tough word for the Lightning Round ... let's give it to her!" (said with a smile) and you know what?... I think Ludden would've given it to her :-)
12:23 Nowadays everyone would say "Drew" instead of Lionel. I don't know the connection between Barrymore and "profile"! We would probably give different clues for "straight" too. 🙂 I'm surprised they didn't use "... narrow".
in the Silent Era, Drew Barrymore's grandfather was considered one of the best-looking actors in movies, and he was know as "The Great Profile." Lionel Barrymore, also a famous actor, was his brother.
I kinda like that though, it's fun the mock rivalry and I'd sooner have unbridled reactions rather than deadbeat nothing, why not have some fun with the show?
Carol & Peter did great competing against each other. The contestants were also formidable opponents.

This is funnier than anything they pass off as comedy on TV these days (and certainly more decent) - and great brain exercise too (also in contrast to modern comedy lol).
I agree with you Matt. This type of comedy is natural and not rehearsed. Both Peter and Carol are brilliantly funny and play off of one another.

So funny but not vulgar as today!!

Allen wouldn't let them have fun like they'd like to. He was to serious, but I guess he had to be a little so the game could be played. Lol
Ahhh, 1963, where television was still black and white.
Three months later when JFK was assassinated, the broadcast was also in B/W.
At 4:45 Ludden makes an error. Because the last password was thrown out the new one should have gone back to the contestants not to Carol and Peter.
isn't pleasant and pleasure associated?
Yes, but I think since they are spelled differently it is fine and neither word is fully written in either of the words it's also fine.
Exactly what I was thinking , "please" is the root for both

Not Patty Duke. Patty was born in Dec 1946 so she would be only 16 or 17 in 1963. She was already famous for her role in "The Miracle Worker."
