I recently got the Ruby and it's amazing. As a Fender/Marshall user, the description of the controls and different amps modeled is very instructive! I've seen this video about 3 or 4 times just trying to make notes to get mine configured. It would be awesome if James did a dedicated video on the controls and different sounds you get. It would be gold.
    Props to the UA crew.

Mad respect for explaining the history, the different channels and how different pedals interact with those channels! I would have loved more details on the different speakers too. Thanks so much for this! I Think UA was smart to try and do a few classic amps really well like this. There’s a large audience out there that only need a few different tones and want a familiar interface that is easy to use. These guys want nothing to do with Helix or an Axe FX. Those offer way more than they want or need.

Thanks! Yeah I was confused about the actual circuit differences until recent years. Realizing that the top boost circuit essentially adds a cathode follower tube stage and an EQ, which is a pretty major difference between the brilliant circuit on the non TB early amps- that was just an important distinction for me. There was even a bass version and I actually don’t really understand what’s going on with the circuit on that one.

  • @Glicksman1

When UAFX came out with the three amp pedals I had to decide which one to get for now as I could only afford one. Well, I can already get a reasonable Marshall, Fender Tweed, Brown and Tan Tolex, or Blackface sound with my board using boosts, compression and a Tech 21 Q-Strip (a must for amp modelers). What I cannot not get close to, though, is a Vox AC-15/30. That so-called "chime" and the unique breakup/distortion of those Vox circuits is beyond what I can create with EQ, compression, etc.
So, it was Ruby for me. It's the single greatest pedal I have, and that bar is high as I have an original Klon, a Catalinbread Belle Epoch Deluxe, and a OE Cali 76 comp among other similarly nice things. This great vid shows what Ruby can do, and let me add, you can do it with your rig, too. You can put your amp away in storage. This is all you need.
I realise that this may read like a paid endorsement, but I have no connection or association with UAFX or any manufacturer of gear. I'm just a guitar player who, just like you, appreciates something that helps me to sound good once in a while.

So you're plugging the UA pedal directly into an audio interface, then just connecting the guitar to the pedal- right? NO amp, no cabinets, no mics- just straight connection and jam on? Man, that really simplifies thigs greatly- when I was into home recording- about 25 years ago- we had to have a big mixing console and we miced real amps with real mics- usually in a separate room because we were all too cheap and ignorant to go buy an attenuator. And we had super basic tube amps- they had a volume knob and a Low End (bass) control- that's it. No EQ, no attenuator, nothing- had to crank it to get the sound we wanted. The guy playing the harp had a speaker in a bucket- literally, a 5 gallon plastic bucket- sounded amazing. He played it into a handmade Russian mic made specifically for harp- looked like something from the 1950s- but that then ran to a little amp which powered the bucket speaker- which sounded amazing. I had a Johnson resonator guitar at the time which sounded amazing as well and we recorded some old delta blues that to this day I'm really proud of. My dad played banjo, upright bass, mandolin, guitar, etc.- and built instruments- and he played dobro on a few tracks for us- man it sounds so good. He passed recently and I inherited his instruments- no idea how to play about half of them- I'm a guitar player, and bass- that's it.

I’ve wondered about something with this and other amp emulation pedals.. does this pedal need to go straight into the PA, or a pedal platform clean amp to work best, or will it work with amps that have strong character of their own? I’d just like to get an AC 30 sound at times. I run amps with a lot of headroom and use guitar tone and volume controls, and a master FV for dry board.

A Marshall head is very doable as they could use the speaker sims from the Ox, which is what the Dream, Ruby and Woodrow use. I tell you what would be COOL - three different Marshall voices in one pedal - JTM 45, JMP Lead, JMP Bass. Why not? The Ruby has it! Internally jumped channels like the Woodrow has. Couple that with a 2x12 and two 4x12 cabs and you're good to go.
One thing though - not sure how you fit a proper Marshall with high and low volumes, three band EQ, and Presence into the six knob form factor. Doesn't leave a knob for Output volume. TAKE MY MONEY UNIVERSAL AUDIO!!

    Is the Ruby digital?

Just curious if he ran the effects before or after? These things sound unbelievable.. it’s mind boggling to think a pedal reproduces real amp tones. I’m not sure anything else on the market comes as close to hitting these tones without extensive tweaking.

The delay you’re hearing is running after the Ruby

For $400, you get a lot of sound for the money. Just pair it with your favorite clean amp, and you're good to go.

Modelers are to amps and pedal boards as Bluetooth speakers are to high end stereos. Great if you’ve never heard the real thing.

Not having your own gear is great as an audience member too ...if you're open-minded. I recall seeing pre-suck Smashing Pumpkins in Seattle 96? ...we had terrible floods and their gear was stranded. Then ended up borrowing from Soundgarden and Pearl Jam etc for the show. For any good band that kind of situation add can an element of specialness for all of us... Or it can just fuckin suck.

Just being a smart aleck. I should add, this pedal is magnificent, Pete Thorn is a terrific host, James Santiago did a brilliant job with this, and, Mr. Congilio is a killer player.
