    Hot off our trip to the Universal Audio headquarters, Nick Bowcott rendezvoused with UA’s senior product manager and sound designer, James Santiago, to find out what the man and the mind behind UAFX pedals deploys on his pedalboard. But this wasn’t just any edition of WOYPB. For a proper sonic showcase, James brought out two lauded axes: a Sunburst Fender 1956 Stratocaster with a 10/56 neck (“The one!” Nick says), as well as a vintage 1964 Fender Strat with a mahogany body and an intriguing mix of pickups. Dive in to learn more about James Santiago’s sound!

    Sweet water and James: People don’t realize the big bright sound of the Police was actually Marshall.
    Andy Summers on Rick Beato’s channel the same week: in studio I used a Fender Twin, I was never a big Marshall guy, but I had to use them on stage.

    What a great interview with an obvious sound enthusiast. Well done Nick. Anyone who enjoys this should also listen to Rick Beato's interview with Andy Summers - another enthusiast.

    Any info I get get from this guy is pure gold. Best ears around.
    If you get a chance to interview him about the dream pedal and his specific favorite use cases for some of the particular settings on there, I would love to get some of that information

    You instantly notice how good of a guitar player he is and how MUSICAL he is. Most guitarists on this app just play boring blues riffs with zero emotion or variation. This guy played like 10 inspiring melodies/chords and impressive sounds with great tone in just the first few minutes of this video. Wow what a legend.

    Came here to learn about uafx’s tape pedal…but then realized, I would love to sit down and chat with James Santiago too. He sounds like a very knowledgeable, humble cool dude. (Mrs. Santiago: thank you for letting him buy stuff!! :))

    No argument about the clean Marshall sound but Andy Summers just revealed on his interview with Rick Beato that early on it was Fender Twins. Sounds like he used Marshall’s later in live settings. James is a wealth of knowledge, I always enjoy his vids.

    I just realized UA has released their amp pedals in a timeline order. Obviously the first 3 were released at once, but we have the Woodrow 55, Ruby 63, Dream 65, and now the Lion Super Lead 68. I wonder if they were waiting to release a bass amp modeler to keep the timeline. The obvious choice for a bass model would be the SVT and that came out in 69. 🧐
    Probably not, and i could just be having a moment, but i could see them doing that at the same time.

    So when playing live, is James plugging the Lion into the FX loop of any given amp for that gig? Or is he going straight to house, and listening back with a stage monitor?

    • @Jonathandavidk
      @Jonathandavidk 5 місяців тому +1

      Almost anyone I know who is using something like the Lion (Dream, Ruby, Woodrow, iridium, hx stomp) is using them as a direct solution. Plug it into a DI on a stage have front of house send a mix to a wedge or use an in ear monitoring system. At home or in the studio, these get plugged into an audio interface and you hear them back through studio monitors. In general pedals like this are not meant to be used into the front of an amp and they sound pretty bad if you do that. People try to get around this by using full range full frequency (frfr) speakers and cabinets, but in general those still don’t sound as good as just going direct.
      My experience is that these are good amps for silent stage environments with in ear systems or playing around in a studio environment (home or otherwise). These pedal are not great for most people for jamming with a band or playing bars. Hope this helps.

      @@Jonathandavidk That’s helpful thanks. I thought as much. Trying to get my head around the idea that all this great Marshall tone is going to end up going through a stage wedge before I would hear it, and/ or through a set of PA speakers that the soundman is going to EQ to his taste anyway. You really want this sound to come out your guitar cab on stage, right behind you.
