As an Australian, it’s weird to hear someone speak about Kmart not existing anymore. They’re pretty much the go-to department store for myself and my family (in fact, I went to one just this week, and I’m in a completely different part of the country from where I live). Though, funnily enough, they’re merging with Target.
@jsmith282 Yeah, the OG Kmart was involved in the founding of Kmart Australia, but they sold their interest in the mid-90's. Kmart Australia also still uses the pre-1990 version of the Kmart logo. Similar deal with Sears Mexico, which was founded by Sears US, but was sold to Carlos Slim in the late 90's. They also still use the 90's Sears logo, but in red. And both will most likely outlive the original stores. Interestingly, Target Australia has no connection to Target USA whatsoever. It's just an outright different chain that just copied the branding which Target USA was okay with I guess.
To me Kmart is always associated with the Newman/Haas IndyCar team Stateside, and in Australia, the Kmart Racing team with Murph and Tod Kelly in the 2000s. Murphs five minute penalty gave everyone a great chance to go look at that beautiful scheme. The Kmart scheme just worked on the VX and VY commodores...and then some.
Western Auto sponsored Darrell Waltrip for much of the '90s, even as the company (not to mention DW himself) struggled. I always did think his paint schemes looked pretty cool though. They're also still kind of involved...Advance Auto Parts, who wound up absorbing most of WA, is a part-time sponsor of Ryan Blaney.
Here is a pretty notable sponsor that was in NASCAR that doesn't exist anymore, and that was Kodak. They were a camera company who made cameras dating back from 1888, to 2012 when they sold all their assets, to an independent British photography company. Although they still make printers and short films, the cameras which made this company famous, and no more. This same sponsor would win 3 Daytona 500's in the 1990's with the iconic Morgan McClure Motorsports #4 Chevrolet.
The Wrestling Promotion World Championship Wrestling(WCW)Was a Sponsor in the mid 90s to around 2000. As a big wrestling fan,It was cool to see wrestling sponsoring a Nascar Team
I was employed from 1995 to 2002 by Service Merchandise. We were briefly an associate sponsor (rear facing) in 1997 and part of 1998. The sponsorship ended when the company declared bankruptcy in 1998.
Pontiac going out of business really hit hard for my dad because that was one of his favorite car brands. The cars he owns right now is a 1978 Trans Am (Sorely in need of restoration) and a 2009 G6 coupe (Got the car from a substitute teacher). I remember a bunch of my family members who drove Pontiacs back when I was 5 or 6 years old.
Ill never understand why they ditched pontiac in favor of buick. Who even drives a buick anymore besides retirees? And most of theirs are 20+ year old grocery getters that get driven twice a week, its not like theyre going out and buying new ones in droves. Wouldve sold more firebirds alone than everything buick has sold since id be willing to bet lol
@@plisskenationbackfromthede3657It's because of Asia. China loves Buicks and most of them are made either there or Korea, with a handful being exported back to the US for what I assume are higher profit margins than if they had made them here.
Kmart in fact is more famous for its partnership with Newman-Haas Racing in CART Series from 1988 to 2001. The drivers who competed under the Kmart brand were Mario Andretti (1988-1994), Michael Andretti (1989-1992/1995-2000), Teo Fabi (1992) Nigel Mansell (1993-1994), Paul Tracy (1995), Christian Fittipaldi (1996-2001), Roberto Moreno (1997-1999) and Cristiano Da Matta (2001).
First one is Circuit City. They were a primary sponsor for a few drivers, like Hut Stricklin in the #8 car in the 90’s, but they were also a secondary sponsor to Bobby Labonte, and I believe also sponsored a few races here and there. Next is Alltel, sponsor of Flyin Ryan Newman’s number 12 car. Yes, they were absorbed by Verizon, but it’s another company that doesn’t exist anymore, and same with Cingular Wireless, which I think had one of the coolest paint schemes ever on the 31 car. Finally, I think WCW needs a mention here. The rise and fall of WCW was crazy, and the amount of money Ted Turner spent on sponsorships was pretty insane. Not only NASCAR, but also Monster Jam with the Goldberg monster truck. I remember watching the number 9 car run the WCW scheme with Goldberg, Sting, NWO, all the legends of WCW wrestling. It was pretty cool, but my how quick they fell.
"Circuit City" (just the people who own the name now, not the original) sponsored the Xfinity race at Iowa in June 2019 as well as Shane Lee's #28 car until the team turned out to be owned by a scammer.
Turner-sponsored cars had some banger schemes, especially the Cartoon Network ones. Although Cartoon Network isn't in this category yet, the cuts being made at Warner Bros Discovery are putting it well on the path to someday being here.

Yeah they where closed in America, Mexico, and England to my knowledge. I think there still in business every where else. It probably wasn’t a big time loss to England because they have huge toy stores called Smyths. In America we have nothing really
Toys я Us never went out of business. They closed all their stores in the US, but have online shopping. They announced yesterday they are planning on opening stores back up in the country, mostly at airports and on cruise ships. It wasn’t online shopping that forced them into bankruptcy, they we’re still profitable. The equity firm that bought it transferred billions of dollars in debt to it and declared bankruptcy. They used Toys я Us to wipe out their debts.
Kmart was a pretty successful racing sponsor outside of NASCAR, and they *were* on the car for that one Lake Speed win. Similar to how GM Goodwrench was rebranded to GM Certified Service, Ally Financial used to be GMAC. So when Ally came aboard as Jimmie Johnson's primary sponsor in 2019 following the departure of Lowe's, it was actually just a return to prominence for an old Hendrick/GM affiliation rather than a fresh, new partnership. So if you ever wondered why Ally sponsorship followed Jimmie to his IMSA Cadillac but not his Honda IndyCar for those two years of his career, that probably had a lot to do with it. That leads me to a similar video idea: sponsors you didn't realize were still in NASCAR.
Interestingly, Toys R Us is actually on the comeback. Currently, the NEW owners have a single flagship store located in the American Dream mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey (part of the Meadowlands Sports Complex), as well as having a 'store-within-a-store' in basically every Macy's store in the US (which is over 500 stores, IIRC), and are currently planning on opening 24 more standalone locations, as well as a number of smaller locations on cruise ships and in airports. Is it gonna be the same as it was in the 90s and 00s...no, absolutely not. But, it could be one of, if not THE biggest retail comeback ever.

When it comes to Kmart they were also heavily involved in CART as they were the main sponsor for Newman Haas Racing for many years who had the likes of the Andrettis, Nigel Mansell & Christian Fittipladi drive for them. Heck even Paul Tracy drove for them for a season in 1995. Now when it comes to F1 all of the paint schemes I remember from the early to mid 2000's (apart from Williams who had HP as their main sponsor) had cigarette companies as the sponsor like Marlboro who sponsored Ferrari & Benson Hedges who sponsored Jordan. All sponsorship from cigarette companies across motorsports has largely ended due to bans on cigarette advertising in many countries including the US.
There's a distinct memory I have from the Sprint era of NASCAR. They would actually block or jam the signals from other carriers such as Verizon at the tracks. So if you had a phone through Verizon, you'd get absolutely no signal at all at the track. Cause Sprint would block it somehow. Now the sponsors I miss the most are Kmart, Toys R Us, Blockbuster and World Championship Wrestling.
The death of RadioShack still depresses me. My dad used to build custom sound systems and he'd take me there to buy components as a kid. That store was awesome
In the 70s, we had a Western Auto across from our local grocer. I used to hang out there looking at bikes and toys while Mom shopped. Kansas City still has the iconic sign even though the company is gone.
I still think the Sprint Cup is the best name NASCAR has had for the Cup Series. It fits the racing stature NASCAR has better than any other the Cup Series had imo.
I agree with Jack since I grew up with Sprint sponsoring the Cup Series from 2010-2016. Although I got used to Monster Energy during 2017-2019, I still like Sprint better
Circuit City, the Stavola #8 was an underrated scheme. MBNA, although they were bought by BofA so I dont know if that counts. Same thing with Family Channel that has been re-branded several times.
Kodak rebounded after their bankrupcty, just as a company that is primarily focused on products used in movie and television production, rather than being consumer oriented.

DirectTV sponsored Clint Bowyer in 2008, and, like him the previous year and Blockbuster in 2016, it went upside down, on the roof, and on fire once Hulu and Sling took over live TV
Even though Kmart was on the decline in the early 2000s after the 2002 Bankruptcy. They could've invested money into the stores but didn't. Thank Eddie Lampert for that, such a * redacted *
When you mentioned a video store, I thought you were going to go with Ricky Craven's 1999 Hollywood Video car. And technically, you could go with Circuit City as well- what exists today with that name is not the same company. Great video!
Sprint and Nationwide were the PERFECT title sponsors - because they don't even sound like sponsors! When I was younger I legit thought those were just the series' names.
FINA is legendary in the European motorsports scene as a primary sponsor of BMW's factory motorsports efforts in the late '90s. They sponsored championship winning M3 touring cars in the European and British series, and their paint scheme on the BMW-supported McLaren F1 that raced at Le Mans in 1996 and 1997 is one of the most legendary in sportscar racing. You can drive the 1997 car in games like Gran Turismo, the first 4 Forza Motorsport games, and Project CARS.
One thing that really surprises me is that K Mart had been a sponsor of the McLaren F1 in 93. I can only assume that it was due to Micheal Andretti as I know K Mart frequently sponsored the family in Indy and NASCAR with John.
That sponsorship ended when Michael was replaced by Mika Hakkinen for the final 3 races of the 93 season. In fact Kmart was replaced by Nokia due to them being a Finnish company & Hakkinen being a spokesperson for the company. However Nokia decided to jump ship to Tyrrell (which is now Mercedes) after the 1994 season mainly because they wanted to sponsor another Finnish driver in Mika Salo.
@@chrisguardiano6143 Interesting, with how low grade K Marts tended to have in feel its crazy to see them on an F1 car. Although to my understanding a portion of the company is dominant in Australia and they do love them some F1.

Being a dead retail and NASCAR fan, I have a few. Ames used to have cars in the Busch series, mostly driven by Kyle Petty in 1990. And also a retail chain known as BEST. They were known for each store having a weird architecture of facade in the front. But in the 1979 Daytona 500 opening, you can see the logo on a car cover during the rain delay but have failed to find the car that had it and who drove it. And of course DW's last hoorah as an owner being half caused by Builders Square, nobody misses that store except Tim Allen.
Like how you gone into a Kmart. I actually got into Toys r Us before it shut down. It was about 2015-2016 and I always loved getting toys until 2017 It's gone. It is what it is but I felt like it could have lasted a little bit longer
Sprint made several bad decisions which started with buying Nextel and followed by investing in 4G instead of 4GLTE which Verizon did and now look at where they are.
If you want to know more about the fall of Pontiac you need to check out regular car reviews video on the brand cause hadn’t been for how the govt kinda acted during the bailout. Pontiac had a chance to rise from the ashes.

Interesting video I thought Pontiac was going a lot sooner after 2003 because they had to switch to Chevrolet for those teams. I did not know they lasted that long as a manufacturer till the early 2010s same as blockbuster. I thought they were gone in the 2000s.
Toys R Us is actually coming back. In Malls, Airports, and Cruise Ships. My only question is either who bought them, or did they get the money illegally.
I'm not sure if they are still around, im thinking ditech and ameriquest in the late 2000's. Western Auto I believe is defunct. Piedmont Airlines was absorbed by USAir in 1989, and USAir was later bought by American Airlines. Quincy's Steakhouse on Kulwicki's 1986 ROY car i believe is also closed down. Bellsouth Mobility was bought by Cingular in the late 90's early 00's. Im sure there's many more.
Ditech went into bankruptcy four years ago, with their assets being split among the New Residential Investment Corp. and Mortgage Assets Management LLC. Ameriquest fell victim to the 2007 Mortgage Crisis and was acquired by Citigroup.

Kim Kardashian Fragrance. I’m not joking. Kim Kardashian launched her perfume line in 2010, and that year sponsored the Number 36 driven by Mike Bliss for one race: Las Vegas. The car was painted pink. Bliss finished last, as it was the first car to crash out of the race, from a solo spin out and hitting the wall. Kim Kardashian was also a co-Grand Marshal of that race, along with Carroll Shelby (Shelby was the title sponsor of the race). Yes, I was at that race. I got Kim Kardashian’s autograph before the race at a booth where she was giving out samples of the perfume. Waited in line for over an hour. Kim discontinued her perfume line in 2022 (thus doesn’t exist anymore), although unsold bottles of it can still be purchased online.
Hy Gain CBs and antennas, Kraco Car stereos (Company is still around maybe but only makes floor mats) Like Cola sponsored a race, Mercury & Oldsmobile Cars .
One mention we have not talked about is Cartoon Network. I know it won't happen but I really wish Pontiac would come back. I even daily drive one despite it being 20 years old.
I still think the Sprint Cup is the best name NASCAR has had for the Cup Series. It fits the racing stature NASCAR has better than any other the Cup Series had imo.
Nah I think Winston Cup still reins supreme as the title name. What's more southern then stock cars and cigarettes?
I agree with Jack since I grew up with Sprint sponsoring the Cup Series from 2010-2016. Although I got used to Monster Energy during 2017-2019, I still like Sprint better
I still remember Nextel and it's bankruptcy to Sprint. The feds chased Winston out of the cup series
@@judefernandez9234 Winston Cup Series!
Circuit City, the Stavola #8 was an underrated scheme.
MBNA, although they were bought by BofA so I dont know if that counts. Same thing with Family Channel that has been re-branded several times.
Don't forget Kodak. They were around for a minute. I want to say the 4 car possibly with Ernie Irvin at some point.
They were on the 4 from 86-03, the 77 in 04 and 05, and for some reason the 12 part-time in 07 and 08.
Kodak rebounded after their bankrupcty, just as a company that is primarily focused on products used in movie and television production, rather than being consumer oriented.
Ernie came over from 94 Sunoco to 4. Then Sterling Marlin was in 94. When Davey Allison died Ernie went to RYR #28. SM 94 to Morgan-McClure 4 Kodak. Mike Skinner ? when Sterling to Ganassi #40 Coors Light Silver Bullet Dodge.
@@paulelliott682 Mike Skinner was possibly in the RCR #31 car at that point but you could be right.
how about Heilig-Meyers? they sponsored the 90 car from 1993-1998 with driver's Bobby Hillin, Mike Wallace and my man the late Dick Trickle
Always been a loyal Pontiac owner. Been a loyal Kmart shopper.Spent lot of time in Blockbusters.... Ever get the feeling of getting old?
Bell Atlantic, altel, singular, circuit city, Kodak just off the top of my head.
DirectTV sponsored Clint Bowyer in 2008, and, like him the previous year and Blockbuster in 2016, it went upside down, on the roof, and on fire once Hulu and Sling took over live TV
DirectTV still exists though. It's just the new AT&T. Pfft
You Forgot Plymouth one of Richard Pettys main sponsors
Even though Kmart was on the decline in the early 2000s after the 2002 Bankruptcy. They could've invested money into the stores but didn't. Thank Eddie Lampert for that, such a * redacted *
I miss Sprint, Sprint marks a generation of NASCAR fans, I remember when everybody called the top division as “The Sprint Cup”
I miss it, too. I grew up with it during 6 of my 13 years of watching Nascar from 2010-2016
When you mentioned a video store, I thought you were going to go with Ricky Craven's 1999 Hollywood Video car. And technically, you could go with Circuit City as well- what exists today with that name is not the same company. Great video!
Sprint and Nationwide were the PERFECT title sponsors - because they don't even sound like sponsors! When I was younger I legit thought those were just the series' names.
I thought for sure the DW Builders Square 17 would be on this list.
It was a subsidiary of Kmart, so technically it was.
@@mpf1947 don't forget about speed block that DW signed on as sponsor for 1998 after western auto left his team
Cuircut City, Hollywood Video, Ditech, Sprint, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Fina Petrol and Lubes (Randy LaJoie’s sponsor)
Technically Toys R Us is still around (and very popular) in Canada
I’ve been playing NASCAR racing 2003 season and 2 sponsors come to mind:
Net Zero and AOL
@@Axle0Bullitt019That is actually a different company that bought the rights to the Kmart name for Australia, so they are not affected at all by what happens to American Kmart.
You could make an episode on 90s collect call cars alone lol. Im pretty sure every single one of those businesses like 1 800 collect or 10 10 345 is defunct now
had a shit load of 10-10 numbers so many I can't remember them all. I do remember off top of my head 345,241,789 and I know more existed.
I really miss Pontiac. I really loved the last GTO and G8 but I know those were rebadged Holdens Monaro and Commodore but I still loved them.
Youre dead?
@@plisskenationbackfromthede3657 Yes.
I wish T-Mobile could be a NASCAR Sponsor again (Formerly known as Sprint)
T-Mobile was never Sprint.
@@ZyairelitboyBut they bought Sprint
@mahiru20ten Ik that, but he said like T-mobile was originally Sprint, but they were both complete different companies
@@Zyairelitboy Fair enough
Western auto, Darrell waltrip # 17
Still have 1 Western auto close to me . Probably private own and just never changed the name .
Toys R’ Us is actually about to open a few new stores. Macy’s revived the company and now they’re coming back.
Toys R Us in Macy's is weak
Kmart was huge in INDY CAR for years
interesting note Toys R Us is rumored to actually coming back in business but to Nascar only time will tell
They have a small presence now inside of Macy's
K-Mart could have been around if they had adapted to modern times like Target and Walmart have. Blockbuster was my childhood and teenage years!!!!!
I think blockbuster faded once dvds got popular. Also red box was huge before Netflix
They'll do anything to get Earnhardt in a Nascar video. Goodwrench was a program ran by GM who is not out of business (yet).
Like how you gone into a Kmart. I actually got into Toys r Us before it shut down. It was about 2015-2016 and I always loved getting toys until 2017 It's gone. It is what it is but I felt like it could have lasted a little bit longer
Still a thing in Canada and other places.
@@jrracingteam1732and macys
Sprint made several bad decisions which started with buying Nextel and followed by investing in 4G instead of 4GLTE which Verizon did and now look at where they are.
Those gen 4 1996-2002 Pontiac Grand Prix are my favorite model of car in NASCAR history.
All the kids in the comments amuse me, but also I'm glad they're here and engaging with the sport
If you want to know more about the fall of Pontiac you need to check out regular car reviews video on the brand cause hadn’t been for how the govt kinda acted during the bailout. Pontiac had a chance to rise from the ashes.
Kodak, primestar, alltel, RCA, cingular wireless, circuit city, 1800 call att kenny Schrader with carrot top on his hood, it was a bush series sponser Yellow freight and Ford quality care service isn't a thing any more
Interesting video I thought Pontiac was going a lot sooner after 2003 because they had to switch to Chevrolet for those teams. I did not know they lasted that long as a manufacturer till the early 2010s same as blockbuster. I thought they were gone in the 2000s.
I am like 1000. Nobody cares but I’m proud of myself
RadioShack is not completely dead. There’s at least one still in Ohio
Remember FTX and Mercedes F1 just recently… that was a disaster
I miss Sprint in NASCAR
K-Mart was more famous in IndyCar back in the day
Especially with the Newman/Haas Racing Kmart/Texaco Havoline Lola Fords of Andretti and Mansell.
@@SJSpode114 iconic liveries, successful accomplishments!
Western Auto that used to sponsor Darrell Waltrip's #17
Toys "Я" Us Did Came Back By WHP Global In 2021.
I could really go for some Extenze right now
WCW/nWo sponsored a car in the Busch series in the 90's.
America Online is a sponsor that does not exist anymore. They were in Nascar only in the early 2000's
K-Mart also ran w/John Andretti/Mayfield on the #37 and cameoed on the #66
Toys R Us is actually coming back. In Malls, Airports, and Cruise Ships. My only question is either who bought them, or did they get the money illegally.
Macy's pretty much bought them.
Still have toys r us in Canada
Helig-Meyer, a furniture company that sponsored Dick Trickle when he drove for Junie Donlavey.
Canada still has toys R us 😎 🇨🇦
MBNA, Bellsouth
STP with Petty is the most recognized paint scheme of ALL time.
STP is still around though
Sears Diehard sponsored DW's truck team in the 1990s.
Joe Nemechek Bellsouth Monte Carlo
Pontiac’s cars, the may not have been a sponser, but those Grand Prix’s still on the road give me memories of those 2000s race, GM Shouldn’t’ve gotten rid of them, or Hummer, they should’ve gotten rid of Buick. who’s still buying those anyways?
DC SOLAR😂😂😂😂😂
Builders Square sponsored Darrell Waltrip for a short time.
Does anyone remember Circuit City?
Yes.
Dodge/Mopar, Pepsi? Do they still sponsor? Kodak, home Depot and Lowe's, Cabela's, target, Coors light and Miller light. Also caterpillar
Circuit City, Kodak, DuPont (now axalta), Ames dept store (sponsored Kyle petty in Busch series), BellSouth (Joe nemexhek's 42), Cingular Wireless (RCR 31), Srroh's Light (mark Martin's 6), The Family Channel (Roush's 16), Western Auto (??? No sure on this one, DW's), Slender You (31 car in the 80s), Nationwise (75 car in the mid 80s... also doubled on the 57), TWA Airlines (10 car early 80s), piedmont airlines (44 car Terry labonte used to drive)
I miss toys r us 😢
Wasn't Wally Dallenbach sponsored by Hollywood Video in the 90's? 🤔
ricky craven did in 99
One mention we have not talked about is Cartoon Network.
Fun fact: Cartoon Network was once a Nascar Sponsor in the 1990's until after 2000.
it is also the coolest and biggest "what if" in Nascar history.
had Cartoon Network stayed in Nascar in the long run, it would've been a whole different timeline.
Phillips 66 Trop Arctic Motor Oil when they sponsored the #66 Pontiac of Cale Yarborough when he was a team owner.
But isn't Toys'R'Us back in business now? Also, idk if this is one but I never see anything about AC Delco other than sparkplugs nowadays but they aren't involved in nascar anymore.
so the lesson is.... no sense in sponsoring a race car...just looks at the camaro...... its gone
