Sounding Moreton Bay - Wrecks and where to find them

    It’s taking too long to learn how to use my new sounder just using it a little bit each time I go out, so I decided to do a trip where I spent most of my time sounding around. I think it was well worth it, I learned a lot about adjusting the sounder and I now know that if I can’t get the best out of each of the available modes then I can at least get very good results.
    I decided that the best way to improve my sounder skills was to search out known structure and try to find fish around it, so I started by looking for wrecks in the central bay and over at Curtin. I only had the vaguest notion of what I wanted to do with this video when I departed the ramp. Talking to a couple of boaties over at Curtin who had trouble locating the artificial reef gave me the inspiration to publish some marks. Thinking about that conversation I decided to publish the GPS marks to help everyone. Now that I have edited it, I have a very clear idea of what I wish I had done. In future, when I have GPS marks in a video, I will endeavour to provide full screen sonar, side vision, down vision and 3D screen shots to go with them.
    My GPS is supposed to be accurate to less than 5 feet, but I suspect this might be based on the use of accuracy enhancement technology such as DGPS, AGPS, RTK or EDIF which are generally available in America but not so much in Australia.
    Let’s assume that the accuracy of any GPS in Australia is 40 feet (it should be better) and that my GPS reading is 40 feet out in one direction and that your GPS is 40 feet out in the opposite direction. Even in this extreme case my marks should put you within 80 feet of the wreck so it shouldn’t be too hard to locate on your sounder. It will be a lot closer than some of the publicly available marks purporting to be the location of wrecks.
    You should be able to find 12 GPS marks in this video; they are not all in the same spot so you will need to watch to find them.
    Finally, just because you have some GPS marks and can find the wrecks and reef structure doesn’t mean that you will catch fish. Once you are in the right area you still need to hunt the fish with your fish finder. If they aren’t there, move to the next mark. I wish you the best of luck.

    Thanks for all your work scanning wreck sites. Interesting thing though, your location for the Captain Neilsen matches GPS coordinates I have for the wreck of the Capricorn. I have the Neilsen a little further north and east of the mark you cited. I'm heading up there tomorrow (weather permitting) so I might check out both of my marks and confirm.

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU  4 роки тому

      That's interesting. I haven't heard of the Capricorn but the marks I have seen for the Neilsen cover quite an area, it is possible they are actually marking 2 different wrecks. When I found the wreck I thought it must be the Neilsen because that is the only wreck I knew about in the area. It is quite possible I still have one to find. Thanks for your input, I would love to know if you mark a second wreck in the vicinity.

    Love the vids mate as I'm new to the coast! Having a week holiday on Russell Island from the 15th of April onwards. Far north east corner of the island called canaipa Point. Im taking the tinny up with me and have a ramp on the property. Any hints on nearby areas would be great! I've been told to head to the pin but was hoping to find some good spots closer by as I have the daughter. Cheers mate and happy Easter

      Thank you. The 3rd video in the Southern bay series talks about some spots in that area. I haven't fished that area as much as I have the central bay but I did do a bit around Macleay and Coochie a lot of years ago. I would recommend the reef around the north end of the island if it isn't too far of a run. This is the link to the video, I think the fishing spots start about 1/2 way through. ua-cam.com/video/ijhA1AAqRE4/v-deo.html
      There are also some rocks somewhere near:
      27° 36.461'S 153° 22.498'E
      I got the lat/long off a map based on verbal instructions so use appropriate caution approaching it. I have never fished them but I have been told they hold fish. Since the position is approximate a sounder may be needed to locate them.

    Hello, thanks for your video. I like the information you provide like GPS coordinates and the overviews of points of interest. Getting my boat ready to take out and looking for places to explore and fish. Had in mind the 4 beacons and the Measured Mile but as I will probably be going alone will have safety in mind. Trying to find a suitable fishing club and was wondering if you had any suggestions? I live in Gumdale near Wynnum boat harbour. Also planning a trip to the Big and Little Sand Hills on Moreton, not that I intend to fish there just to see this remote and beautiful place and capture some video with my drones. Will have to educate myself on the Green Zones and conservation zones and legal fish sizes. More into catch and release but will not turn down the Occassion nice fish. Thanks again and God bless.

      The GPS marks are only a starting point. I don't think I have ever found fish in the same spot two trips running. Sound around to find them if they are nearby. Unless you are just after a relaxing day on the water (nothing wrong with that) there is no point fishing if there is nothing on the sounder.
      I find the four beacons and the measured mils can be hit and miss. When I have visited they either fish well or not at all.
      You might check out the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club. I don't know the club, only that they are based in Manly harbour.
      The sand hills fish well for whiting at the right time of year. Trolling from there up to Shark Spit (particularly around Shark Spit) will often pick up pelagics.
      I use the Navionics maps in my GPS and they have the green zones marked, although not clearly enough to help if you don't already have a rough idea where they are.
      Have fun and stay safe.

    Hi
    liking the videos ,I’m getting an old fibreglass boat with a 115hp 2 Stoke ready to do some fishing /exploring and trying to decide what size fuel tank to install.
    How much fuel do you use on your overnight trips?

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU  3 роки тому

      Thank you.
      I have a 150hp 4 stroke on my current boat. On a dead calm day in glass out conditions I get about 1 nautical mile/litre, less as it gets rougher. The last trip I did outside (FAD 4) was 68 nautical miles and used about 90 litres because it was a bit rough and I was a bit heavier on the throttle than usual. I have 175 litres on board and I have never used more than half a tank. Cleveland to the Rous channel and back the next day can be as little as 30 litres including a a couple of hours of low speed trolling.
      I had a boat with twin 115HP Yamaha two strokes a good few years ago but I have long since forgotten the fuel consumption figures. I remember it had a main tank and a backup with a total capacity of around 375 litres. All I can say is that I never came close to running dry.
      It is a trade off between having enough fuel and not carrying too much weight, I would say to put the biggest tank you can in and only fill it as much as you need for the trip plus safety reserves. If you do that I would also recommend a good quality water filter in the fuel line because a half empty tank can get condensation in it. I fill my boat on the way home each trip so I don't get any condensation.
      The other alternative is to go with a smaller tank that you can keep it full and throw a couple of plastic 20 litre jerry cans on board if you think you might run short on a trip.
      Another way to do it is to look at the compliance plate on the boat and get the maximum load. Subtract the weight of everything that will be on the boat (including the empty fuel tank). Multiply the remaining weight (in kg) by 1.33 and that is the number of litres you can (legally) carry.
      If you are wanting to travel to the far ends of the Bay or even offshore I would be looking at a minimum capacity of 150 litres although 100 would be more than enough for most of the distances I do, including an adequate safety margin.
      Not really a definitive answer but there are a lot of variables to consider. Hope it helps.

    Weather looked awesome! Good old Willy Weather 🙄. Great video again. I pick up my new Fish Finder tomorrow so looking forward to that! Do you get much use out of the electric motor you have? I’m looking at getting one next.

    • @weFishAU

      Weather was awesome, pity that decisions have to be made on the strength of what is forecast.
      Hope you got side vision. This is my first finder with side vision and it has taken me a long time to master it. I gave up trying for a while but now I have it sussed out it is awesome.
      I do use the Minn Kota quite a bit but it depends on the situation. In some areas I prefer to drift. I find it is way better than an anchor if I am wanting to target a show on the bottom. I have always had trouble matching where I drop the anchor to the scope and ending up over the spot I want to be. With the Minn Kota it is so simple I never miss and if the wind or current changes it's only a couple of button presses to move back.

      Yes, it is nice. I have linked the DJI to the Axiom while the boat is in the yard and it works fine. Every time I try it on the water I get errors. Need to spend a bit more time sorting it out because it should be awesome to use on the water.

    And have started fishing the bay
    We only have a 4.1m with a 40 2 stroke..... My question is would you please be able to help out a fello fisho with some close spots to have a look at

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU  3 роки тому +3

      My choices would be Peel, Green and Mud Islands. Sound the drop offs around them. The artificial reefs west of Peel and East of Coochie are also worth a look. The drop offs around Pats Point on Macleay and the red buoy on the south east corner of Coochie also produced good fish in years gone by, but I haven't fished them in a very long time. The Banana banks north of Coochie used to produce good whiting as did the east side of the big bank south of Coochie.
      Hybers light and the drop offs to the south east all the way to the next red beacon produce pan size Sweetlip and Squire.
      There are a lot more around but most are a bit further out. I often see boats smaller than yours fishing those spots but the bay can turn very nasty very quickly so gaining a little local experience before venturing too far from shelter is a good idea.
      The other thing I would recommend is the Navionics maps. You can buy them for most sounders, pay for a subscription to use the app on your phone or tablet, or use it for free on the internet. webapp.navionics.com/?lang=en
      Sign up for a free account, go into the menu and turn on community edits. That will show you all the marks people have put in for fishing spots around the bay. Some marks are tiny and you need to zoom in a lot to find them. Some are good and some are not but they are a starting point. Sounding around can be quite rewarding but again it takes time to learn when a spot will produce fish and when it won't. I find tide and wind are important when fishing the close reefs around the islands and every spot is a little different.
      Most of my videos have the track I followed and zooming in will mostly tell you where I drifted or stopped to fish. In some, particularly since the one you have commented on, I have marked areas to fish and I plan to do more of those.
      Hope this helps.

      I haven't posted any marks around there yet, but I hope to soon. There is a comment in the Wrecks video giving a mark at .27,30,344 153,19,307. I haven't checked it yet but I think that is likely to be the sunken houseboat west of Peel. Other than that, I have always done well near the green beacon at the west end of Horseshoe bay. Best of luck.

    Where do you find all the wreaks online

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU  3 роки тому

      Nowhere in particular. Some turn up in the fishing forums and some from talking to other fishermen. Basically what I have has been collected over years. Most, if not all, can now be found in the Navionics app, but they are easier to find in that if you have a rough idea where to look for them. You can check it out for free on the web but it won't give you the GPS coordinates; webapp.navionics.com/ To get the coordinates you have to get the phone/tablet app for an annual subscription.
