Moreton Bay Snapper
s07e50
Sorry that it has been a couple of weeks since my last video. Life in general and bad weather in particular have conspired to prevent me from getting out. Coming into the Christmas period will be as busy as it always is but I will endeavour to keep a regular video schedule.
I wanted to do an overnighter for this video and I even went out when the weather wasn’t as good as I would have liked for an overnight trip. I was just a bit frustrated about being landbound for so long. I had planned a trip a few days before but my car battery picked that day to fail on me. Really though, I was quite lucky that it failed when I went to start the car in my garage, rather than when the car was sitting on the boat ramp. If it was going to fail, it picked the best time.
Despite a poor forecast, the weather in the morning was quite good. I got off to a later start than I really wanted, but that was down to me and a very comfortable bed.
Finding fish was hard work all morning. I’ve certainly been out many times when there were a lot more fish on the sounder. By the same token, I’ve been out when there have been a lot less as well, so I shouldn’t complain too much.
The thing that made it really hard going was that I couldn’t find any live bait and when I did find fish, they didn’t seem to be hungry.
But that old saying that “perseverance pays”, was certainly true in this case. Keep doing what you know works and with luck, you will find a cooperative fish.
Not long after I landed a really nice Snapper the wind changed direction and picked up a bit. I thought about my options for fishing overnight and decided that the chances of catching anything were not all that good with the prevailing wind so I decided to call it off and head home.

Sonar 102 - Arches and other things

A Better Rod Holder

s07e48 What's in a name? That which we call a rod holder by any other name would work just as well. OR WOULD IT? It took me a long time to realise it, but all rod holders are not created equal. For most of my fishing life, I have used the rod holders that came with the boat I had. When I started trolling seriously a few years ago I soon learned that having the right rod holders made the job a l...

s07e47 After the last few rather pitiful hauls of crabs, I thought it was time to go looking for them in earnest. I decided that I would drop pots here and there, go for a troll for an hour or so, and then go back and check the pots. If I didn’t have anything in them, I would move the pot to another spot and repeat the process. I also decided to try something new (to me) to see if it would help...

    I was half expecting you to pull up the big mackeral I missed a week ago. I had it up to the boat and was working on landing him when he looked at me sideways, said "nup", and bit me off. I'm sure I heard him laughing at me. If you catch a roughly 1m mackeral with a #3 spoon in it's mouth give it my regards.

    Good video man. !! How do you rate the unusually bottom hull of the baysport with turning, reversing, cutting through chop? I.e. since they have that flat concave bottom in middle ?

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU 9 днів тому

      Thank you. As far as the handling of the boat goes it seems pretty much the same as any other boat I have owned. One theory is that the water to the propellor is more laminar resulting in greater efficency. That could be true, the boat certainly planes at low speed. Without a doubt, it is not a detriment.

      @weFishAU thank again mate. One more question,asyoi seem really knowledgeable of these boats.. where is the default bilge pump outlet located? Only reason I ask is because when we declined the back of the boat to get off a floating dock, I saw a lot of (what looked to be) rusty water come out of a hole to the left of the motor from the hull up top (when looking out the back) . I've tried to find a manual of these boats to see what that hole is , and whether it was an outlet to bilge pump or outlet to bait station or x ?

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU 8 днів тому

      I'm not 100% sure on the 545 but my 620 has the bilge outlet where you describe and the live bair outlet beside it. I expect the 545 would be much the same.

      @@weFishAU hi again. This link shows a good representation of the bottom coverage whilst underway. ua-cam.com/video/K-u57e__SzY/v-deo.htmlsi=ISpGKYHoevk9grte Ignoring the verbal commentary in this video, you will see undulating bottom structure being covered by the beam as the boat travels forward. This is the question I have - how do these 3D undulations get represented on the 2D sonar. I know you were going to make a follow up video to help explain this. I just thought this link helps to better articulate what I am trying to get across… Thank you Cameron

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU 7 днів тому

      I think I understand what you are asking. It is difficult to put into words other than to say that the undulations show as differences in the thickness of the red line depicting the ocean floor. Basically, the 2D representation hides everything below the highest point of the undulations. I will try to include some footage to illustrate exactly what I mean in the next sonar video.

    Hi. What parameters in the ping are used to generate the 2D Sonar image of bottom structure? How is this ping conversion made to what we see on the MFD? Cameron

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU 21 день тому

      Wow. That is a complicated question. The time taken between sending the ping (sound wave) from the transducer until its return echo being recieved is divided by two (2 way trip) and then calculated against the speed of sound in water to get the depth. Since the speed of sound in water changes with temperature a more accurate reading will be obtained from a transducer that measures temperature. However, temperature changes with depth and temperature inversions can still introduce noise and errors. Another point. Since the ping that has been sent must be received before the next ping can be sent, pings in deeper water need to be less frequent because of the longer time taken to recieve the echo.

    • @Camh1968
      @Camh1968 21 день тому

      @@weFishAU Thank you for this response. - Does Chirp technology also depend on receiving sent ping before sending the next ping? - Does every single ping sent down bounce off the very first obstruction it meets and not travel down any further? - Does the MFD continually display millions of pings by computing the nature of the ping and transforming it into a scrolling graphical form? I have trouble interpreting what I see on the MFD from a bottom structure profile point of view. I do understand the fish viewing aspect though and that most of what we see on the MFD is historical. Can you please further elaborate on what is seen on the 2D Sonar MFD from a bottom structure point of view as it continually changes from right to left and how it matches the ping action (in a 3D conical shape underneath) as you drive forward...? Cameron

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU 21 день тому

      Chirp pings are across a band of frequencies. While it would be possible to have some overlap, I doubt that the benifit would be worth the effort. Think of every ping as starting as a dot at the transducer and then expanding as a circle all the way to the ocean floor. That is how the cone is formed. Each ping covers the whole area and will be reflected off everything it encounters. The time taken for the return and the amount of energy in the return determines the depth and colour of the pixel on the screen. The MDF only displays the current ping in the A-Scope. Everything to the left is a history of what was in the A-Scope in the past. I'll try to cover some more about the bottom structure in the next video.

    • @Camh1968
      @Camh1968 21 день тому

      @@weFishAU Many thanks. Interesting points to soak in. These sound waves are quite amazing! I like your 'point to circle' definition of the sound wave moving within the water column.... Let me know when your next video on bottom structure is up. My brain just can't seem to crack this last piece of the puzzle (matching the moving 2D Sonar in front of me (helm) to the moving 3D cone underneath me). Knowing the science you have described does help connect a few pieces together though...

    Such good info. I’m trying to work out what’s the best furuno setup if money is no option, I want the 3D mapping I want the best outcome possible. I love finding new ground. Still lacking info on what transducers. With your expierence what do I need. I have a 6.5m centre console with limited space. Maybe 2 9 inch mfd? screens and a tzt3

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU Місяць тому

      I reckon the more screen real estate the better. I cut my entire dash out and rebuilt it to fit my 16" screen. That said, sometimes you can't do that and in the past I have often had to settle for a smaller screen because I had no room (or money) for anything bigger. You will want the B54 transducer and a DFF3D box to process the signal in order to do the 3D mapping. Not required, but you will get much better results if you also get an SCX-20 satellite compass, which will remove most of the wave motion from the signal. Two 9" TZT3's would work, the only caveat is that the 9" won't take the Furuno side imaging transducer. If you ever decided you wanted one of those you would need a 12" TZT3. I also like to have 2D sonar. I have the Airmar TM265LH for that as I like to go out deep sometimes. There are plenty of other options available, depending on what sort of fishing you do. I already had the 265LH when I got my TZT3. If I was selecting a 2D transducer specifically to go with the TZT3 I would be looking at one that does bottom discrimination (tells you if you are over mud, sand, rubble, rock, etc). Furuno has a list of compattible transducers and their capabilities in the TZT3 manual. You can download the manual in PDF format from their web site.

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU Місяць тому

      Thank you. For the Mackerel I generally troll between 5 and 6 kts but when I'm not getting anything I vary it between 4 and 7 knots to see if that changes anything. On this trip nothing changed. When I am catching a heap of grinners I also bring the lures in closer to the boat as that is supposed to help. It didn't. I am definately catching more grinners than I ever have in the past. The only saving grace is that I have finally found a use for them as crab bait.

    The case for mono for snapper is too hard to ignore. I love mono for the sensitivity and all the reasons you mentioned but I can not see why mono would be better but the proof is in the eating and eating and I will set up a mono rod just for shallow water snapper. Thanks for the vid and the tips.

    Thanks for all your videos. I have a little 4.3 fishabout as my son wanted to get into fishing and boating. I've taken it out at Jacobs well plenty of times with him but he has anxiety and stresses alot so been hesistant to take him to new spots. I love the look of Moreton where are some safe areas to venture around on a good day with him? we've only ever caught small bream, whiting and occasional flatty around Jacobs well I really want to take him into some deeper water and catch something exciting for him but just unsure where to start. Was thinking maybe Wellington point or Cleveland and just staying close to the mainland maybe?

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU 2 місяці тому

      Wherever you go in the central or northern area of the bay you will need to watch the weather. That said, It's a relatively short trip from Wellington Point to Green Island. Cleveland/Raby Bay to Peel is a little bit further but quite doable on a good day (thinking of your sons anxiety here). There is fishing close to Cleveland and Wellington Point so you could start in close and see how he goes. Around Huybers light is one spot near Wellington Point but there is patchy reef all the way from Cleveland to Wellington Point so if you can identify that on your sounder you could try any of them. You could also drop some crab pots in that area. There is also reef in Raby Bay itself, which is close to the ramp. There is a video in that playlist that will give you some general spots to try. Hope this helps.
