- I cleaned up this snare for a good friend of mine. It had been sitting
in storage for 20+yrs.

The high tuning was giving me blink 182 vibes because Travis Barker uses a OCDP 14x6.5 Bell Brass snare and he tunes it very high like a piccolo
Gave me massive Korn vibes cuz their drummer used this same snare.
I just bought the same snare with a maple shell because one of my drum heroes Jeff Porcaro used one

This looks very similar to David silverias snare from the first 3 albums 🤔
I think that one that David used was a Tama snare though?

First album was this snare, LIP and FTL he switched to Tama snares. Tbh, I'm inclined to believe forums because they are often times incorrect
Undeniably a cool drum. Here's my question for those that tune using a DrumDial: if using a DrumDial, what setting (number) would the LOW tuning be at... I know the batter head is about 86 - 88 for normal, higher is obviously a higher number, but how low is the number to achieve the sound I hear with this fine snare? Sure, I could guess it, but I would welcome a reply from someone that uses a DrumDial as I do. Thankls, and thanks for posting a helpful video on this model of snare.
I have a black panther 12x5.5 and what I did is got the tuning that I want, then used my drum dial and got an average of what it is then made sure the lugs are at that tension. Does that make sense? Tune it first then use the drum dial to see where the lugs are at. Every snare is gonna be different.

Hi, here's my chance to ask about the sound of this snare drum and the thinking behind the die cast rims. I guess the heavier rims are there to control the overtones and make it tight sounding, right? If this is the case, shouldn't a very shallow piccolo snare drum naturally have less ring to the sound because there's so much less metal there on the shell itself? Obviously Pearl knows what they're doing and these drums are definitely cool looking and sound great. It just seems a little odd to me to put such a controlling rim on a smaller shell. Is that the whole point, though? Are they trying to control all overtones and dry it completely? Is it just too simple to think that an Evans HD dry head on a regular sized snare would achieve this without splurging on another snare? Thanks!

I have the same snare but in steel. I think it needs a new strainer because it's way below the low tuning settings and super buzzy, the strainer slacks when you start to play
I have this same snare and experience the same issue needing to crank the strainer almost as tight as it can go to get a useable sound. My understanding is that free floaters are designed to be used with 16" snare wires that actually hang off the edge of the drum which would allow them to sit much tighter on the head. 16" wires are very hard to find at a reasonable price so I just make the 14" wires work, but maybe give longer wires a shot before replacing the whole throw off?
@@enzodastoli9483 you are correct, what you need is a Puresound snare wire, they designed for Free Floater snare drums. The 14" won't work unfortunately. In my case, I solved the problem by switching the snare strainer from plastic straps to strings, it's perfect now
