Actually, no, I would buy G80's grand daddy - the original Hyundai Genesis😮 That car was just so iconic! As a kid I absolutely destroyed a car magazine with a picture of one with my saliva, because it was such a bold attempt for then underdog manufacturer Hyundai to get into the luxury market. I was 11, a big boy, so my supercar fever was over by then, and my hero cars were Hyundai Genesis - the big bad Korean wolf, Volkswagen Passat CC - the sleek 4-door coupe, the original Volkswagem Touareg - the modern take on offroading, the original Mercedes GL - the modern take on offroading AND the most beautiful car in history, and Audi S5 Cabriolet 3.0 TFSI - a car for my imaginary girlfriend.
I also prefer manuals, but! (And I always tell people...) Audi's automatic transmissions, since the S-Tronic are just sublime. I drove the Q3 for a while and I've never seen a car upshift like that without a dual clutch. It's just insane!
Doug, I saw your review of the European spec E 38 seven series. And I was so intrigued by it that I found one. It was $10,000. It’s a 1995E 38 manual transmission from Spain and I can’t thank you enough for giving me this idea. It is the absolute coolest car on the planet to me and I’m enjoying the hell out of it.
I had a 1995 750iL while in the navy stationed in Italy. That car was so nice and smooth driving. Unfortunately it was stolen while my ship was underway.

I eventually ordered a 2005 SRT4 ACR from NEX new car sales and drove that for the last two years I was in Italy. Was easily the most fun I’ve ever had in a car. Southern Italy is an interesting place to drive where every 2 lane road is 3-4 lanes and passing in the left or right side is standard practice for many.
It should be noted that the last Generation G90 (2017-2022) is what is obtainable for $40k. You continued to show the 2nd generation that was completely redesigned and released to the US Market in 2023. That version is certainly not obtainable for that money. Probably won't be long though because nobody is buying them for the $90-115k that Genesis is asking for them. Price aside, it's an amazing car. I wish more upper class people would consider it over the competition.
I disagree that you can find nice examples of F80 M3s, especially 6 speeds, under $40k. I just searched AutoTrader nationwide, and there are only a handful of manuals under 40k, and most of those have 80k+ on the odo. I also own an F80 M3, and know this market pretty well.
Yeah sometimes he's a little inaccurate when talking about prices because on cars & bids cars usually sell for much lower than they would at a dealership.

Toyota's reputation for reliability exceeds the reality. Had a Ford escape that died at 160,000 miles and a 2002 Tacoma that died at 220,000. Did better but not double.

I view something "cool" as a car that someone could look at and go "woah, what's that?" or, at very least, *notice* as being more special than a "normal" car. Basically none of these check that box to me. I don't think anyone would look at any of these vehicles twice.

I think ScatPacks represent an even better value. +/- 400hp to the wheel is more manageable than 700hp but NA. That's a lot of fun. And a $40k Scat is a prime example or even 50th Anni.
I considered a Porsche 996 Carrera years ago, but I ended up picking up a a 987 Cayman instead. Fantastic car with a much nicer interior, smaller dimension, and a mid-engine. Crazy good fuel economy for a 00s sports car too.
The G90 is basically the Pontiac Grand Am/Grand Prix of the 2020s. Wouldn’t normally be thought of as a cool car but it’s sporty and upscale enough to be called cool.
I would definitely put the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio on this list..... used low mileage ones are right around the $35k-$40k price point. Love them!
I was recently in this price range, coming from my first car a 2011 BMW 120d hatch, a hand down from my mom. I narrowed it down to a Jag F-Type V6, BMW M2, Audi S5, C43 coupe, Lexus RC350 (V6 and coupe was a priority). Cut out the M2 because the interior was almost identical to my 1 series, Jaguar was the prettiest to me, but would be an older model (2014, 2015) and I worried about reliability, Lexus was non offered, because their isn’t really any in EU where I live. In the end it was between the S5 or C43 but the C43 was 3-5k more expensive and the Audi seemed the most logical to me (love the interior) wanted the first gen since before my drivers license. Lucked out on a first owner 2018 C43 coupe with 110k km all papers checked out, dealer remembered the car and is soooo pretty (less than 15 of them in our country, so pretty exotic and the V6 biturbo sounds so good) very happy with my purchase 😊

You are showing a brand new G90 in this video when you should be showing the 2020 version that you’re talking about, which is significantly different and explains why it’s only $40k now
My dad owns a 996 Carrera, and we made sure to find him one where the IMS had been replaced. Other than little, annoying German car flaws, it's been a solid car. Also, the Ford Focus RS belongs on this list! A near-perfect one will cost a bit above $40k, but one with 60-80k miles is down into the low $30k range.
Should've included the Lexus RC-F. Extremely reliable, good power, smooth and comfortable, and can have some fun when you want. Can find them under $40k easily, but you don't need to be scared of high mileage ones. Powertrain has definitely proven itself over the years
Every car I've ever owned put together costs 24k (4 cars). I could buy a 40k car but, why would I? There's nothing more fun than a car you don't mind driving like a rental because it's so cheap to replace.
I'll add a few more since I've been looking around at this price point: Early C7 Corvette 2019 Audi A8L 981 Porsche Boxster S First Gen Jaguar F-Type 2019 Audi S5 Sportback Prestige 2022 Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport There's SO much more, 40k is a really good spot to have your budget right now.
I guess it wouldn’t quite make this list, but I walked out of a deal for $43k for with a 2024 Mustang GT Premium, six speed of course. For my needs, fun “economical” car to enthusiastically drive for work mileage all over Texas, I think has pretty good value. It’s a car that I can work on and do my own maintenance pretty easily. My other vehicle is a heavy duty truck that I love and use as a truck, but is a horrible thing to maintain for most of my work related travel which is mostly meetings, same day trips, and one or two nights allover the Texas Triangle. Luckily, my wife is a little more of a car gets from A to B kind of person. She values safety and comfort and right-size. She settled on the Volvo XC60 to fit her needs and sized for our family: her, me, one son that’s growing (12), and our yellow lab. We made an A4 work for awhile and we both loved that car, but it was too small for her. Vehicles are so interesting because of the interesting people who buy them and their needs. I would never buy the Volvo for me. It’s the most boring car on earth, but it does boring very well.
Audi RS4. Around $40K. Very rare to acquire , beautiful to admire, great testosterone to drive it…. Somewhat reliable. Most important great boost to your senses. Manual transmission (touch) great V8 (ears) great to look at (eyes) and good taste to have a rare car…. Could get a RS3, they are about the same size, but manual transmission V8 in the RS4. Definitely a good option.
To me the knock on the 996 appearance, the nose to be exact, was not just the headlights but the fact it was exactly the same nose as the Boxster. Now that's true of a lot of others but the "unique" fried egg look brought that similarity to the forefront.

Happy to see my old 996 make another appearance in another Doug video! It's the Orient Red Metallic car at the 11:13 mark - but a little odd since Doug is talking about the 996 4S, whereas mine was just a regular 996 Carrera. Still, he's not wrong with what he says about the cars, they're a great value - a whole lot of car for the money.
The Subaru Outback Wilderness should have been on that list. That thing looks ridiculous and rugged, and it's just as capable as the 4 Runners, but in a different way. Advanced Symmetrical AWD system with a turbo boxer 4 cylinder! Yes i know the CVT ruins it though. Would have love a manual, but they got rid of it several years ago cuz nobody brought them.
Everybody knows that sub $40K, the best buy right now is a lightly used EV like Tesla just coming out of Hurricane Helena and Milton. Be sure to buy in Florida. Our state thanks you.
I think an amazing car under 40k that he didn’t mention would be the 2018+ BMW M550i. It’s a “poor man’s” M5. Has the same engine just detuned. Can easily mod it and push crazy power like an M5 and a sedan no less. It’s my personal dream car and the can’t wait to own one.
I can name 10 cooler cars with more hp, better handling, better styling, more reliable and better sounding exhaust for a similar price. There is a reason you never see Lotus’s on the road. I’ve seen more Lamborghinis and Ferraris, RR, and Bentley’s than Lotuses and I live in a small midwest state
My personal sub-40k choice is the porsche 987.2 Cayman S. They’re a pretty rare find though; I’ve been in the market for one for about 6 months. Fantastic car to drive though
I appreciate that Doug made a true "coolest" cars you can get list. I would personally never buy any of these cars mostly because they would cost a fortune to maintain and repair (except the Toyota, but I think used Toyotas are overpriced in general especially TRD Pro 4Runners)... but they are cool.
I'm shocked to learn that the new 991 Turbo 50 years starts at €372K. Well into McLaren carbon tub money, right? The 2002 996 Turbo I just found online locally was €186K new as spec'd and I thought that was a lot for 22 years ago. Prices barely doubled it seems. Is the premium a Turbo commands worth it? A Carrera seems so fine already. €100K extra for the turbo, AWD and...?
Video editors are starting to get the cars wrong or out of sync with what is mentioned in the video and it just displays the disconnect between the presenter and their team often when these channels get to commercialized glad Doug has made it and can spend less time working and more with his family. But it can’t be that hard to get the right people to keep this channel on track and on par with the original era that made all of this possible

2017 Corvette C7 with stickshift. 6.2 litres, 465 lbs of torque in 3300 lbs. Targa top. 4 center mounted exhausts.
I'd call the C7 Vette one of the best value's for under $40k but not really one of the "coolest" 😭

I generally agree with you. I bought a 2017 comp with 37k miles for $46000 and thought it was a steal. 2015's are fairly cheap though

Wish they had made AWD version. I'm sure some would say that would ruin them, but other manufacturers make it work just fine.

I was recently in this price range, coming from my first car a 2011 BMW 120d hatch, a hand down from my mom. I narrowed it down to a Jag F-Type V6, BMW M2, Audi S5, C43 coupe, Lexus RC350 (V6 and coupe was a priority). Cut out the M2 because the interior was almost identical to my 1 series, Jaguar was the prettiest to me, but would be an older model (2014, 2015) and I worried about reliability, Lexus was non offered, because their isn’t really any in EU where I live. In the end it was between the S5 or C43 but the C43 was 3-5k more expensive and the Audi seemed the most logical to me (love the interior) wanted the first gen since before my drivers license. Lucked out on a first owner 2018 C43 coupe with 110k km all papers checked out, dealer remembered the car and is soooo pretty (less than 15 of them in our country, so pretty exotic and the V6 biturbo sounds so good) very happy with my purchase 😊
None of these cars are cool to me. Thus, I’m cooler than Doug.

My dad owns a 996 Carrera, and we made sure to find him one where the IMS had been replaced. Other than little, annoying German car flaws, it's been a solid car.
Also, the Ford Focus RS belongs on this list! A near-perfect one will cost a bit above $40k, but one with 60-80k miles is down into the low $30k range.

Should've included the Lexus RC-F. Extremely reliable, good power, smooth and comfortable, and can have some fun when you want. Can find them under $40k easily, but you don't need to be scared of high mileage ones. Powertrain has definitely proven itself over the years
Every car I've ever owned put together costs 24k (4 cars). I could buy a 40k car but, why would I? There's nothing more fun than a car you don't mind driving like a rental because it's so cheap to replace.

I guess it wouldn’t quite make this list, but I walked out of a deal for $43k for with a 2024 Mustang GT Premium, six speed of course. For my needs, fun “economical” car to enthusiastically drive for work mileage all over Texas, I think has pretty good value. It’s a car that I can work on and do my own maintenance pretty easily. My other vehicle is a heavy duty truck that I love and use as a truck, but is a horrible thing to maintain for most of my work related travel which is mostly meetings, same day trips, and one or two nights allover the Texas Triangle.
Luckily, my wife is a little more of a car gets from A to B kind of person. She values safety and comfort and right-size. She settled on the Volvo XC60 to fit her needs and sized for our family: her, me, one son that’s growing (12), and our yellow lab. We made an A4 work for awhile and we both loved that car, but it was too small for her.
Vehicles are so interesting because of the interesting people who buy them and their needs. I would never buy the Volvo for me. It’s the most boring car on earth, but it does boring very well.

Around $40K. Very rare to acquire , beautiful to admire, great testosterone to drive it…. Somewhat reliable. Most important great boost to your senses. Manual transmission (touch) great V8 (ears) great to look at (eyes) and good taste to have a rare car…. Could get a RS3, they are about the same size, but manual transmission V8 in the RS4. Definitely a good option.
To me the knock on the 996 appearance, the nose to be exact, was not just the headlights but the fact it was exactly the same nose as the Boxster. Now that's true of a lot of others but the "unique" fried egg look brought that similarity to the forefront.
I agree. My early 996 is nearly indistinguishable from the front of a same year Boxster. But the 911 had an original msrp almost double the Boxtser’s.

Happy to see my old 996 make another appearance in another Doug video! It's the Orient Red Metallic car at the 11:13 mark - but a little odd since Doug is talking about the 996 4S, whereas mine was just a regular 996 Carrera. Still, he's not wrong with what he says about the cars, they're a great value - a whole lot of car for the money.

Im too old for a Kia Stinger, but the GT is just a badass car. I have seen some beautifully modified examples, and they just look FUN!
F8X are also super reliable once the CH is done & you’ll be around 550+ with simple bolt ons.
The $40k intro-level Aspark Owlet is a great car and only slightly less mythical than the Owl...

The Subaru Outback Wilderness should have been on that list. That thing looks ridiculous and rugged, and it's just as capable as the 4 Runners, but in a different way. Advanced Symmetrical AWD system with a turbo boxer 4 cylinder! Yes i know the CVT ruins it though. Would have love a manual, but they got rid of it several years ago cuz nobody brought them.
996 is a great choice but be aware that they are old and they were cheap for a long time so most need $10,000+ in maintenance/repairs etc
You can also get a Jaguar F-Pace SVR for under 45k which is a great bargain considering the power and depreciation that’s already happened
Everybody knows that sub $40K, the best buy right now is a lightly used EV like Tesla just coming out of Hurricane Helena and Milton. Be sure to buy in Florida. Our state thanks you.

I think an amazing car under 40k that he didn’t mention would be the 2018+ BMW M550i. It’s a “poor man’s” M5. Has the same engine just detuned. Can easily mod it and push crazy power like an M5 and a sedan no less. It’s my personal dream car and the can’t wait to own one.

I can name 10 cooler cars with more hp, better handling, better styling, more reliable and better sounding exhaust for a similar price. There is a reason you never see Lotus’s on the road. I’ve seen more Lamborghinis and Ferraris, RR, and Bentley’s than Lotuses and I live in a small midwest state

I appreciate that Doug made a true "coolest" cars you can get list. I would personally never buy any of these cars mostly because they would cost a fortune to maintain and repair (except the Toyota, but I think used Toyotas are overpriced in general especially TRD Pro 4Runners)... but they are cool.
The screen on the RS3 really cheapens it. Looks like someone stuck a 1996 far in GPS to the dash
It really does, atleast the nice thing is the the screen can hide itself into the dash and you could control most things from the speedo
Now just think how terrible all these giant full dash screens are going to look in 10 years. At least you can close the one in the RS3

The 2002 996 Turbo I just found online locally was €186K new as spec'd and I thought that was a lot for 22 years ago. Prices barely doubled it seems.
Is the premium a Turbo commands worth it? A Carrera seems so fine already. €100K extra for the turbo, AWD and...?
Video editors are starting to get the cars wrong or out of sync with what is mentioned in the video and it just displays the disconnect between the presenter and their team often when these channels get to commercialized glad Doug has made it and can spend less time working and more with his family. But it can’t be that hard to get the right people to keep this channel on track and on par with the original era that made all of this possible
