  • Dr. Andy Woods takes us to Colossians 2:12, that is sometimes being used as a proof text for "salvation by water baptism". But when studied closely in context, this is not dealing with water baptism at all. The word baptism is not always referring to water baptism, as a parallel passage in 1 Cor. 12:13 explains rather well. It is talking about "spiritual baptism", which is inherent of our salvation by grace through faith. Being baptized in water is simply an outward projection of an inward change.
Dr. Woods continues with a short allusion to another "proof text" that some christians tend to use, being 1 Peter 3:20-21. He concludes that the word 'save' here does not always mean the same thing in the NT every time it is used and points to the earlier sermon he has given on this subject. You can find a more complete rebuttal of that misunderstanding on 1 Peter 3:20-21 in the latter half of the sermon below:

It is unfortunate that they never even made an attempt to actually translate the word baptize in the KJV of the bible. I think that alone has lead to a lot of the confusion over baptism so that when people read that word they automatically think of water baptism which is clearly not the case. The very basic meaning of the word is to be immersed into or placed into. In water baptism you must be totally immersed or submerged in water to be scripturally baptized which means all people who were only sprinkled have not been baptized. Baptism always should follow salvation but it does not bring salvation which is only through faith in the atoning work of Christ who shed His innocent blood on the cross for our sins and rose again from the dead. I agree with Andy Woods interpretation of those text. We are placed into or baptized into the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit the very second we trust in the atoning work of Christ by believing He died for our sins on the cross and rose again. Water baptism or immersion follows that faith. Baptism in and of itself has no power either to save your soul or get any of your sins forgiven. It is an act of obedience that should follow faith in Christ. It is only by our faith in the shed blood of the Lamb of God that our sins can be washed away and forgiven.

A primary truth of the N.T. is often missed. There are two primary baptisms mentioned, water and Spirit. Many professing Christians speak of recieving the Holy Spirit but not the fact that the Holy Spirit is recieved as a permanently indwelling presence as the result of the Holy Spirit baptism.
In Eph 4:5 Paul writes, " One Lord, one faith, and one baptism". In Heb 6:1,2 he speaks of the "..the doctrine of baptisms. ". So we know that isn't more than one doctrine relating to water baptism or Spirit baptism so in order for these two scriptures not to contradict each other there has to be one baptism with two components, water and Spirit that make up the new birth
As far as water baptism we know from the book of Acts that it follows repentance and is for the remission of sins. Remission of sins is forgiveness of sins on an individual basis. The word " recieve" in the N.T.s original Greek means " to take hold of" which means we must take action in order to recieve remission of sins. Recieving forgiveness of sins requires action on our part to " take hold of" the free gift. This is done through repentance followed by water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ. As the result of obeying these two commands the Holy Spirit applies the forgiveness of sins to us, because of the shed blood of Jesus , by spiritually circumcising our conscience, removing the guilt from past sins, and restoring to it its childlike sensitivity to sin.
This makes repentance followed by water baptism part of the new birth.
Spirit baptism is to be filled with the Holy Spirit to overflowing and must be prayed for after repentance and water baptism. Once God answers your prayer and fills you then you must surrender the last vestige of your will, your tongue, " the body's most unruly member that no man can tame", until the Holy Spirit takes control of it ( tames it ) and enables you to speak in the spiritual language that our English definition calls " tongues". Once this occurs it triggers the overflowing baptism and we then have recieved the Holy Spirits' inward presence.
In their zeal to escape the catholics " saved by works" the protestant reformers went too far the other way to where they began to teach salvation without obedience. Trying to skip over the book of Acts and point to Paul's writings in Roman's 10 as the plan of salvation. Neglecting to recognize that all of Paul's letters are to churches he established that were already filled with born again believers.
Lastly, Paul's belief in what salvation involved is plainly spoken of in Acts ch.19. When he perceived the disciples hadn't recieved the Holy Spirit yet the first thing he asked was, " How then were you baptized"? On hearing they had only been baptized in John's baptism he reminded them that John said to believe in the one to come after him Jesus Christ. They didn't say that they believed and that was it. The believed by what they did and that was to let Paul baptize them in water in the name of Jesus Christ. Paul then layed hands on them and they recieved the Holy Spirit. How did Paul know when to stop praying for them ? Because they spoke in " tongues". Paul taught the same thing Peter said in Acts 2:38 concerning salvation.

Charlene Yvonne , one verse. No. There ar many verses.
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. As many as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Repent and be baptized everyone of you in the. Some of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the Holy Spirit. You must be born of water and the spirit to see the kingdom of heaven. Who can deny these men water?!? Even now doth water save.
It’s a lot of verses, that are really clear.

I've never heard the doctrine of Christ twisted so seamlessly as Andy does. For example: Didn't John Baptise with water and refer to another baptism of the Holy Ghost? Cessationists like this and most Calvinist's do their best to degenerate the Holy Ghost. This is Blasphemous teaching from the pit.

For John truly baptized with water, *BUT you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit* not many days from now.” (Acts 1:5) NKJV
And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ (Acts 11:15-16) NKJV
For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you. 12 Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 *I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius,* 15 lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. 16 Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas. Besides, I do not know whether I baptized any other. 17 *For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel,* not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. (1 Corinthians 1:12-17) NKJV
Apparently, some of the Corinthian Christians made a big deal of the fact that they had been baptized by Paul. They were putting too much emphasis on the ministers doing the baptism, which led to them dividing into cliques. Because it was becoming a divisive issue, Paul was therefore grateful that he had not baptized very many in Corinth. Of course, Paul did baptize a few in Corinth. Crispus is mentioned in (Acts 18:8) and Gaius in (Acts 19:29), (Romans 16:23). Paul preaching the gospel of Christ was more important than baptizing, though he was certainly not opposed to baptism. Yet, we can see by this that baptism is not essential to salvation. If it were - if the teaching of baptismal regeneration were true - then Paul could never thank God that he baptized so few in Corinth, and he, as an evangelist, could never say “Christ did not send me to baptize.”
