To answer your question about fish tongues: With fish, the tongue's function is to transport the food quickly into and through the mouth, where, in many species, an extra set (or sets) of jaws will grind the food. In addition, the tongue moves oxygenated water through the mouth to the gills, helping the fish to breathe.

    • @NihilisticJokerz

There is also a parasite that will replace the fish tongue which also kills the fish if said parasite is removed.

That scene where it's charging after people along the canal is one of those horror movie images I will never forget. I remember reading somewhere that this whole movie was a metaphor for how the director saw Korean society.
The people don't see the corruption directly in front of them or even add to it. Then when it gets too big to deal with it Swallows you up in it then spits you or it just straight up destroys you. And you kind of see that in the human behavior, with the cover up, the experimentation, the bribery, etc. And even at the end, what do people do to try and destroy the very poisonous corruption they created they pour more poison on it.
In case you hadn't looked it up the director of The Host also directed Snowpiercer and Parasite, so he's known for putting in societal metaphors in his works

That opening attack scene is so great. It’s displayed from wildly different points of view and makes the whole experience confusing, funny, and scary all at once. The monster is lumbering around not sure of its surroundings. It slips and falls at certain points. Then there’s this really wonderful shot of an old woman riding a passenger train and she’s looking out the window at the carnage and squinting with this WTF expression. People quietly minding their own business get grabbed by it. When it leaps out in the water to escape, it dives between people who are paddling those little swan boat things you can rent at parks. It’s probably the closest approximation to what a real-life monster attack would feel like if it ever happened.

In school for marine biology currently. Fish have tongues for two main reasons. Firstly, tongues allow fish to guide food to the stomach quickly. Also, fish tent to have extra sets of teeth to help break down the food on its way to being digested. Second, tongues are used to guide oxygen rich water towards the gills to aid in breathing.

I know that throwing up a fish might make more sense, but the way the fish detatches is clearly a snapping motion rather than a throw-up type thing. Moving through frame by frame you can see it moves with the movement of the creature before doing so.
Also, when looking at the back of the creature, we can see that there are holes the fish heads are burrowed into, rather than fused onto the creature.
Not to mention the attached fish also look kind of messed up. maybe they were some type of offspring, or fish that were also affected from the same batch, but didn't mutate in quite the same way? But realistically it's just because it gives an unsettling vibe but it's also kind of funny(?) to see a fish just flop off a monster.
    Good video. I love carp.

    • @Goldenkitten1
      @Goldenkitten1 2 роки тому +25

Yeah, I kept replaying those sections over-and-over and at 26:58 it's pretty blatant. The fish literally ejects from the hole in its back, I don't think there's really any room for argument there. He says we don't see it so it could be either but go to that timestamp and watch it repeatedly or in slow motion and it's clearly separating.
As to why this happened? Perhaps it effected a single carp in the group but as it grew exponentially the other growing fish in the group couldn't get away in time and it literally grew around them. With the fish in its back either being dead already or at the very least brain dead and somehow vaguely attached to the main fishes life support like parasites. Even if the latter seems unlikely the fact the other fish were fully grown and not decaying seems to suggest they were still living in a sense when the main creature died.
But yeah, as you point out the real purpose was just to be creepy.

I watched this movie a long time ago, and I didn't even see that scene, now the whole thing makes much more sense. It appears the organism might reproduce through budding, and that it produces more fish-like young from its back that then can go on to mature into a copy of the creature. The release of the most mature bud would make sense as a stress response, in order to quickly disperse offspring when its life is threatened. Just a thought.

To me it looks obvious that the fish fell off it's body when the agent yellow was dumped on it. It's possible that the reason for it having multiple tails even when it was little is because it may be a conjoined twin type situation combined with some parasitic mutations. The fish that fell off it had a real gnarly looking face perhaps from having it's head buried inside the monster for so long. It's possible the reason they're on there to begin with is that the chemicals may have created a large conglomerate egg with multiple baby fish inside and the dominant one became the main giant with limbs while the others took on a parasitic mutation an latched on without being fully absorbed.

I thought for sure the guy doing a back-flip into the shadow water was meant to be context clues that it's a conglomeration of things sloshed together by the concentrated chemicals. My brain followed it like this: first it gets a bunch of fish stuck together which the fishermen saw, then the guy jumps into it adding to the mass and limbs, then it gets sea side birds into it from being around water edge areas where it ultimately starts to attack.
To me the "hands" look similar in structure to a bunch of glued together webbed footed birds legs, while the "arms" look like backwards human legs, with smaller arms behind them, where arms would be on a backwards facing human.
I also thought the creature returned to the bridge because it was established to be the last place the human saw before he committed a back-flip into it.

The comedy seems almost entirely derived from pratfalls and it's so weird to have cartoonish banana peel slips mixed with this horror story.
Also the S-shaped spine is common in fish who are inbred or otherwise just genetically weak. You see it often in fancy guppies since ensuring you don't breed familial ones can be a bit difficult with females collecting deposits from multiple males for use whenever she wants. We also saw it in a few definitely not inbred guppies when it was the mother's first drop - she might not have incubated them long enough or something else might have gone wrong that resulted in malformed bones. I assume similar rules would apply to other fish.

    • @discordiacreates6669
      @discordiacreates6669 2 роки тому +3

Yeah the comedy of this movie is a bit odd, I just see it as so strange and almost uncanny that it doesn't really fall into comedy or horror, it just exists and that's actually the charm of it for me, a beautiful wtf ^^'
And yeah, first guppy fry batch is often the hardest but I believe it's actually due to the mother herself being immature at the time and not fully developed herself, so the fry may be nutritionally deficient from the unusually high nutrient demand put on all of them. Fish can also have spinal issues due to too small of an enclosure and that's obvious on an older shark type of catfish our LFS has, poor thing has a pretty messed up scull structure due to being raised by someone with too small of a tank that didn't know what they were doing when they bought a nearly 2ft long fish. They're fine though, just kinda sad to look at but they're in a big tank now that's at least twice their length, but yeah... Though in this monster's case it may actually be all of the above, seeing how skinny it looks as well as having some weird stuff going on with its spine. Neat monster though

One of those movies I always wanted to watch when I was young, bit never ended up doing and simply forgetting its existence over time. Nice to learn more about the mutant fish here now.
Also, I always thought it would be a mutated catfish, due to its looks, body form and well, it being a predator.
And with the fish falling off of it I would've guessed it goes into the anglerfish direction, with the male biting and fusing with the females there over time. But thinking about it now, that would make no sense with them falling off + I know of no carps (or catfish) doing that. So that's out of the question then.

Dude, I was watching your SOTD video until the, ads I do, and heard your announcement that you covered the host (which I thought you had already done) “last week” (which surprised me). So here I am watching it now. Why did I, and possibly so many others (based on you saying something about the numbers), think you already covered this film. Mandela Effect I guess. Anyway enjoyed your video especially since this is easily one of my favorite movies of the cloverfield variety. The host was my first exposure to Bong Jon-Ho and I haven’t looked back since. This had so much talent on the screen and the dark comedy/tragedy was so on point there are scenes that emotionally sucker punched me. Thank you for this.

Fish tongues move food to the back of the mouth and help swallowing from what I understand. Yep…that’s about it.
I love your rundown of this, and about what the grandfather said. I always kind of thought the protagonist (I’m sorry, I’m so very white) was autistic, and the lack of protein story was the grandfather blaming himself for his sons perceived flaws.
It would also explain when the grandfather states his son is actually very smart, as well as his slightly childish demeanor and lack of communication skills.
Also, as an angler, I love how the designers took the time to make the head and jaws of the monster look like an actual fish.
If you’ve ever lipped a large mouth bass, you know what I’m talking about with the mouth.

This is, in my opinion, an underrated masterpiece. The best monster movie I've seen in a long, LONG time.
Observation: since fish lay eggs in clusters, and we are assuming the mutations took place in the egg, is it not plausible there are more of these creatures out there?

Oh, interesting. I know this movie because Omni Viewer briefly talked about it in his top favorite Kaiju Movies from those years ago, and I was interested in seeing you tackle it
On the topic of Kaiju, I would be really interested in seeing you tackle the monsters of the Heisei Gamera trilogy, as, not only are the movies fantastic, but the kaiju in them have some really interesting things about them. Here are the movies and the monsters that appear in them:
Gamera: Guardian Of The Universe (1995)- Gamera and Gyaos
Gamera 2: Advent Of Legion (1996)- Gamera and Legion
Gamera 3: Revenge Of Iris (1999)- Gamera, Gyaos, and Iris

It’s nice to see you finally do an analysis video on this movie and the host fish monster. I’ve always questioned what in god’s name did those scientists dumped into the river that would’ve created the ungodly monstrosity seen in this movie. But with what you said about the possibility of rat genetic information being inserted to a barley fertilized carp egg due to the chemicals definitely seems to make sense.
Yet if you decide to cover another korean horror movie, perhaps you could finally watch train to busan and cover the virology of the zombie virus seen to infect the train’s passengers. It’s basically like that "all of us are dead" zombie TV series but in the movie format you’ve thought would’ve been best.

Roanoke, please cover the weirdness of the Color Out of Space! that is a film that desperately needs review from a learned man of science such as yourself. or the 2015 movie Bite, which has a significant tropical parasitic infection to be spoken of for sure, and a rather mutagenic one at that.

@@TheRookieGamerYT basically a kind of parasitic radioactive color from another universe breaches through into our world to mutate and leech the life out of everything it infects. It makes it like what it knows from it's realm, and then drains and sucks all the essence out to feed itself. Such is my interpretation at least
