Eric, you have become my favorite swing coach on UA-cam. You obviously have a nice swing, but I love how you take on the role as a student when working with JT, always asking the right questions to make things crystal clear. I usually prefer coaches working on their own, but the 2 of you make a great team. Hope you keep making this great content.
Eric. You have helped me figure out a swing that has been a mess for 20 years. Your ability to explain a concept just…resonates. JT is another amazing guest. I want to thank you for creating content, it has truly made a difference for me. Lots of local lessons that did not work. Videoing my own swing and applying your videos has made my golf buddies poor, jealous broken men. Much luv bro.
Thanks Eric for this video. I was getting pretty frustrated with my driver. I was told to always keep my arms tucked in and now I see the trail arm from various videos pull away a bit at the top which feels way more natural. Before I always felt like I was pushing the club, focusing on keeping everything tucked in and not allowing the natural swing. This video truly resonated with me. Thank you.
This explains a lot! At the range yesterday and noticed I was hitting my 3 wood off the deck best when my motion was free and natural. Any time I was conscious about where I'm at during the back swing, I lose the fluidity, therefore I lose the natural extension at the top of my back swing, resulting in short, blocky shots to the right.
That’s a great video guys. So important to get into the correct positions and this demonstrates why. So much detail given that is relatable when trying to feel the swing. 👏🏻⛳️
You’ve got me following Justin Thomas! I will avoid a swing trigger that has me leaning inward with the right knee. I will practice before every shot your suggestion to begin the backswing with the shaft parallel to the ground and the club face turned slightly towards the ground! Great work 😄
Hey Eric, I love the videos. Great stuff, but could you possibly think about adding tracers for your shots? Just helps us to see thanks again and keep the videos coming
Interesting comment about the trail arm not being touching the body. I’ve been trying to keep my trail elbow against my side when I reach the top of the backswing and I’ve been struggling to hit the driver. In fact I’m worse now than when I first started. Now all I can hit is a low hook…I’m almost read to give up and be one of those guys who never uses their driver😢
I hope you get it sorted my friend! I'm sure we could help if we could see your swing.....send videos to www.cogornogolf.com if you don't get it fixed we'll help fix that
OK, Eric, as usual I'm going to needle you a little bit & challenge you a lot. That's not to say that this video wasn't terrific; it was. That said, I want all of your followers who see this video to comment on the amount of shoulder turn Rory got and how little you got in comparison. Viewers, compare Rory at 9:23/16:40 to Eric at 12:30/16:40 and Eric at 12:43/16:40. Now, compare Eric at 12:54 to Rory at 9:23. Anyone can see two things: Eric doesn't turn his shoulders as much as Rory does when Eric actually hits the driver, but at 12:54 Eric rotates his shoulders as much or more than Rory. That means Eric has a lot more in the tank! If he, you, or I rotated our shoulders that much, we'd get another 30 yards of air carry out of our driver using the correct shaft. So, you can see that I'm not needling Eric to make him look bad, I'm needling Eric to get him to turn his shoulders as much as he's telling us to turn our shoulders! I'm heading to the range to try this out because I know this will improve my distance and I'll get to see how it effects my control. Good video, Eric.
As Einstein often said, simplify simplify. Golf instruction has become insane by breaking down a gestalt into fragments creating paralysis through analysis and failing miserably. The over the top miracle swing takes the club inside and allows what seems natural for millions to work. It was the swing used by most 20th century golfers.
This is interesting. I get way to inside and have a tendency to have big hooks. When things are lined up in the swing I can consistently hit 165 to 170 ball speed. I Bel think this is a good thing for me and drills for me. I have been told by instructors before i need to feel like im trying to hit fades. Ends up being high draws.
Hey Raymond! Unfortunately that won't be a YES or NO for everyone.... What you need to FEEL depends a lot on what you currently DO....would need to see your swing to say for sure
I've been trying to feel a lot of timing in footwork. My sequence/trigger has been plant down get the hips and feet going before everything. Watching this drill and working my way feels wrong too early pressure on the trail side causing me to extend my trail leg stopping rotation and getting out ahead of it. This has me feeling more pressure on the front side until p1 then getting the pressure into the trail heel to get turned instead of plant and slide and use all upper body to turn. I was doing what I was aiming for so long but it was wrong. I've started to feel like I actually need to be on the trail side later that way I have something to move. I was way too quick hopefully I explained that well enough. A sense of pressure into my trail heel from p1 to get the turn. I feel stretch get wide then let the hips get me up almost like a toss behind me, gather to transition and explode. Who knew my transition was off because of my first move back. This has me feeling the vertical forces in my legs without over exersion.
Eric I have a driver question. I hit my 8 iron like 175, but my driver is only like 230 to 240. A guy at the range it hit at sais to me in passing if I ever figure out speed I'll hit it a mile. I didn't know what that meant but researched it and what I found is to swallow out my swing to get less spin. What do you think any help you be greatly appreciated. Thanks BTW love the content I watch them all
Hey Keith! Great question....could be several things. My suggestion would be to go get a club fitting asap first things first to make sure the club in your hands isn't the thing holding you back. Once you do that (which may solve the problem) then we could talk swing stuff....could be hitting down too much AoA, spin, etc
Great stuff. Maybe an entirely different video, but how do you avoid "handle dragging"? Or holding on to the grip too long through impact. Just let it go?
As a born thrower, I started playing golf like this and shot good scores in 5months. 10 years later, so many lessons and UA-cam videos later, and I'm still not as good as using my natural throwing instinct to load the right lat and scapula, then throw it. My one gripe would be, does the wide takeaway matter? Does the body motion matter? The body will respond as necessary to get into that top position and load all the right side over the right leg. If we reach the same loaded position at the top, what does it matter? It feels so contrived and unnatural to take it away wide, so much potential to pull us onto the outside of the trail foot. If the position at the top is the same, why would a quiet takeaway and width at halfway matter?
Hey Phil! Pretty much yea.....few key differences with driver vs iron mainly at setup and head more back with driver in downswing. Details here: ua-cam.com/video/TJtx-qVSgVU/v-deo.html&pp=ygUbRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGRyaXZlciB2cyBpcm9u

The one move I didn't hear you talk about is his squat at the top, and then he uses the ground on the way down and explodes up into the ball for max distance.
The trail arm is bent for sure at impact (roughly 20-30°)...but it will not be the same for everyone. Players who have more trail side bend and rib cage rotation numbers (think Viktor Hovland) will have the trail arm MORE BENT…players who have less trail side bend and rib cage rotation numbers (think current Tiger) will have the trail arm straighter/LESS BENT...still bent SOME...but less. Hope this helps!

These two guys are so easy to understand and listen to. Keep it up gents

JT really helped my driver game on Cogorno Golf!
Love it....he helped my driver a ton as well a few years back!
Saw JT for the only time on Micah Morris Golf helping him with position at the top for a better swing. Nice collaboration.
Thanks Dan! Jt's the best!!
That Colab was great. You're both were very helpful. THANKS!!! 👍👍👍👍
Appreciate it Robert! Always fun working with JT!
Revisited this lesson, works for driver & irons a gives solid gain in distance.
Love it John!

Is there a follow up video of the downswing with you two?
Hey! I dont think there is a specific one on downswing arms BUT good topic to do for this year!!

Brill!! Rory also has that timing of using his butt almost like a sitting motion ??
for sure....some of this action:

Before transition from the top to the downswing should you feel the club float at the top / rest at the top before you start the downswing
Hey Raymond! Unfortunately that won't be a YES or NO for everyone....
What you need to FEEL depends a lot on what you currently DO....would need to see your swing to say for sure

Filmed it and it's like with this I can feel the club head and almost slots itself without having to manipulate

@@CogornoGolf Thank you!
Is that takeaway move good to use through the bag?
Generally speaking yep
Same move for irons?
Hey Brian! Pretty much yea.....few key differences with driver vs iron mainly at setup and head more back with driver in downswing.

What's the reason for keeping the left hand off the grip? Why not hold onto the club with both hands during the first part of the rotation drill?
You could....but keeping the left arm off and to the left of the club helps feel the lead arm more IN FRONT vs ACROSS the body like JT wants to feel
I only get the strech feel in my lead arm, when I have a fairly tight grip?
If I just hold club medium, I don't get that sling
Thats OK....I dont see that being the same for everyone..whatever works best for u
During the second phase how quickly can you bring the clubhead inside?
Pretty much right away. In and up at same time
Butt of club should be pointing roughly at the ball/target line as you do this (on plane)
The one move I didn't hear you talk about is his squat at the top, and then he uses the ground on the way down and explodes up into the ball for max distance.
Thats for sure part of it!
Is the right arm bent a bit at impact?
The trail arm is bent for sure at impact (roughly 20-30°)...but it will not be the same for everyone.
Players who have more trail side bend and rib cage rotation numbers (think Viktor Hovland) will have the trail arm MORE BENT…players who have less trail side bend and rib cage rotation numbers (think current Tiger) will have the trail arm straighter/LESS BENT...still bent SOME...but less.

Damn sorry to hear that Richard---appreciate the feedback
The reality is there are a lot of "must haves" in the golf swing. Some people need to hear things in different ways for it to really "click".
