Not sure why I’ve suddenly started missing this guy and his band all the sudden in 2024, but here I am, watching him thinking dang, he was too hot to stop.
Same lol... haven't thought about Ben Orr in years, and all of a sudden I'm obsessed. Not even sure what kick started it, but here I am learning everything there is to know about this beautiful man.. so incredibly talented. A rare gem.
Me too. It's almost spooky. I cannot seem to see, learn and read enough. Haven't thought about him or The Cars in literally decades but now I am crazily obsessed.
Ha, during Candy-O Ben goofed on the order of the verses, and at 19:50 coming out of the solos and into verse 3 (should have been "Edge of Night" there) he caught himself and flashed a wry smile to the guitarist to his left. Good recovery though, can't fault the guy, he is a legend. Performing is about the fun and joy in playing and moving the audience. Plus he is so damn gorgeous....
I wish I would've told my son about when I saw the Cars back in 78. Benjamin was my favorite. I always followed his Music after he had his own Band. My son always loved Bands that were different. I lost my son 4 years ago to Cancer when he was 32. I know that Benjamin lost his own life to the most deadly Cancer. I have to say that it just crushed me. My son had blonde hair and the same eyes as Benjamin. You'll both be forever in my heart and prayers. I'm 69 now Benjamin would have been 77. My son would have turned 37 this coming 4th of July 2024. I know that Benjamin had a son , I saw him and he looks just like his Dad. God bless his heart. No one should ever die young. 😔💔🙏❤️💙💙🎸🎶🙏❤️💕
September 8, tomorrow will be Benjamin’s 77th birthday. Happy Heavenly Birthday Beautiful Benjamin❤❤NEVER forgotten ALWAYS LOVED FOREVER❤️❤️🍾🍾🍾🌹🌹🌹❤️❤️Pink Champagne and Red Red Roses for my angel from above ❤️❤️
3:22. That incredible Ben smile. And he’s just so talented and professional even in this more relaxed venue. Just love how he gives varied vocal interpretations to these songs I’ve listened to over and over. Fantastic singer and musician. Wish he was still here. Thank you for this amazing video.
I can't believe this was almost 30 years ago.😢 Ben would be 77 this year. 😮 Crazy! So good looking here. You have to respect his talent and humbleness as well. ❤
I grew up just outside of Boston and I remember him when he was in the Band The Grasshoppers ! Wow ! That is my first memory of him. Then I saw him live when he was with the Cars back in the 70's wow ! I will always love him. 🤗🙏❤️🙏💙😇💕
Wow I was 7 in 95' but over the past few years I've been listening to The Cars and Benjamin's solo work, he was so talented and beautiful. Thank you for this gem!
I worked in downtown Boston around this time and caught the commuter rail at South Station....how in the heck did I miss this concert. I would have surely skipped out of work early to see him!! 💕 Thanks so much for posting!! The world lost this beautiful and talented man too soon 😢
Wow Thanks for the great memory ! saw this show as I was waiting to take the train out of town ! sound was great in the grand old station i remember he could have gone on for hours he was full of new energy with new material and bandmates Great stuff !!
How cool that you were there! What a gift. Benjamin Orr is a legend. I get teary-eyed sometimes when I listen to him and The Cars. How strange life is. Ben and Ric of The Cars are both gone now. The world misses them so much, at least I know I do. Thank you for sharing the memory. 🌹
You're one lucky guy. Never got to see them live. I was too young. So how did this work? Benjamin performed this as an official show? At the train station? Like, they sold tickets to it beforehand? Just trying to understand the logistics. Did other bands perform there? Was it considered a local concert venue? With his talent, Ben needed to be playing stadiums. But somehow he could never get the right group of guys together for his solo performances. I disliked all the musicians he toured with in the 90s, except for Tom Hambridge. You just cannot replace the magic of the 5 original Cars members. Ever. The Cars without Greg's synth...forget about it. He's the key to the sound. And none of those clowns could get anywhere near Elliot Easton's virtuoso riffs and solos. Everyone thinks the drummer is always expendable, as in, the easiest to replace. Hell, no. When that Liberty guy played drums for Ben's Big People band, I had to stop listening and watching. Too frenetic. Too theatrical. Not the right fit for someone as chill and innately mellow as Ben Orr, and an insult to the clean concise wizardry of Mr. Robinson's style. It was a bizarre spectacle. So that's a long-winded way of saying David Robinson is the man! The genius in his playing is in the simplicity. Simply perfect and effortless at all times. And what I'm also saying is, as much as I love hearing Ben sing in these later years, the 'X' factor was missing without his 4 original band mates. No matter how great the chemistry is between Ben and his new band mates from '95 - 2000, the music was always lacking something. That indescribable element that only one in a million bands have. The Cars had it. But Ben on his own? With other guys playing the parts of Ric, Elliot, Greg and David? Nah, brah. For me, it's not just about being able to hear Ben sing those songs. It's about the whole cumulative experience, and even though Ben is my absolute favorite-- I'm a level 2 million diehard Orr fan -- I still have to be truthful and say: seeing his solo shows was crushing to me. His voice was never solid and in tiptop form like when he was with the Cars. He could've made up for less-than-perfect-vocals and having to strain by bringing the heat/attitude/charisma that he's so well known for, but his energy levels, his presence, his various other choices all seem to be dragging. He's still a professional and a gentleman throughout his solo performances, but he wasn't convincing enough. He didn't sell the show to the audience like he did (without even having to think about it) when he was with the Cars. I get that he's relaxed here, having fun, with the pressure off and all that, but from what I've read about Ben, he's strict as heck when it comes down to showtime and respecting the audience. He didn't like mediocre.
A rare find! What a gem. Thank you so much. I still love Benjamin Orr. It’s hard to imagine a world without him in it. At least we still have photos, videos and his music! 🌹
I have to be honest , when I 1st came across this I was in shock and saddened. Ben had changed so much. I have since read the book, Let's Go, and tons of interviews about him, his friends, even his own words, and about what happened in 1987 with the Door-to-Door album betrayal ( Ric) and so much more. I now love watching this and I listen to his unreleased songs all the time. They are amazing and I can't believe they were never released. I read that Ben did go to Los Angeles with them to Columbia Records but they rejected him. Wow I can only imagine how he felt. I'm so sorry that he kind of "went off the rails" but I do understand it as I had the same reaction after a betrayal. I just hope that he found happiness with his life in the years after the car's broke up.
@@DatRebelDawg Hi and thank you for not jumping all over me like some other people did on some other sites when I told them the truth. There is a huge 7 or 8 page article on the band interviewing each one of them. You get a sense of what happened. Like they knew D2D was not a good album, they were not enthusiastic about it at all. Ric took over, complete control, nobody had any say. Ben wanted to keep touring because that's what he loved. Unfortunately Ben even says that he thinks he broke up the band which made me sick. Also go on UA-cam and watch Paulina, she will tell you how creepy Ric was as a person. In my opinion, Rics controlling nature took a lot of Ben’s confidence away. They were together since the ‘60s and Ric called the shots all the time. The breakup was hard on him and DGP left him later.
