These programs were broadcast on Free local channels that you could pick up on your rabbit ear antenna. MTV, on the other hand, came out later (early 80's) was on cable of which you pay for. The point is, that The Cars had made a BIG splash well before MTV,.and featured on The Midnight Special. There they showcased their mega hit "Just What I Needed" and later I believe 'Let's Go" from The CandyO album. So America was well informed that Orr was a "co" lead-singer. The one with the nice voice so-to-speak. I just wanted to state this because although The Cars were Perfect for and heavily played on MTV, especially the "Heartbreak City" album, that music was played on TV before MTV.

When The Cars came out it was the era of "The New Wave" bands. The Cars, The Police, Blondie etc. So there was a sense for being unique if you will. Ric Ocasek's 6'4 thin frame Jet Black hair and sunglasses image was as iconic as Gene Simmon's demon persona make-up was to Kiss. Ocasek also had that dopey voice and for me, at first, I didn't take his singing terribly serious. My taste aligned more with the Orr sung tunes. So The Cars knocked down the barriers to a new "sound" if you will. And Ocasek's image would be etched into people's mind especially the casual fan. Or the Non fan. So there was a sort of a divide in followers of the band. Those that came from Rock liked them for Orr and those that liked the modern New Age sound of the early eighties for the entire band. If they makes sense.
Regardless of all the alcolades that Ric got along the way of the Cars history, the number One best to really define the Cars was Benjamin Orr! Absolutely my favorite!❤❤❤

Great song. The three chords resemble Heart Shaped Box now that I noticed it. There are only so many chord progressions one can use before it’s redundant. Ric would give Ben the songs he thought had a chance to become hits with his smooth vocals on them. He was usually right. Drive was a big hit because of Orrs voice.

They were ahead of their time....(we first thought that, their music was only a computerized production when we heard their first album.) I Love The Cars. Maybe you won't appreciate their style...At First. Give their tunes a few spins to see if the groove sinks in. I say to people....just like fungus...it grows on you. I put this sound by Orr/Ocasek along with the nascent Romeo Void, Elvis Costello, Crowded House, and so many others of the MTV 80s. While reminiscent of British invasion/Merseybeat Brits, but still unlike anything heretofore heard, Now, Ric and Ben both dead - but this song won't go away. The clothes and music during this era changed big time - and New Wave brought great times for the clubs and music.
"Shake It Up" was the much bigger hit, but I prefer "Cruiser." As an adolescent, I listened mostly to black oriented radio, but when I wasn't, I was listening to The Cars, Boston, Electric Light Orchestra, and Kansas.
Kitty Lan yes I agree, that although he was known to be the “sexy” one, he also downplayed it normally. This is the only performance I’ve ever seen where he so obviously played it up and showed off for the camera. And he does look like he may have been high, but I don’t know enough about his personal life and especially now that he’s passed away I feel uncomfortable saying so for sure.
Around the same time, they appeared on another show and Ric was dancing around like crazy. Maybe they were trying to change up their performance, or were asked to do so by TV producers?

Ben was such an original, natural rock performer, as opposed to the other awkward-on-stage band members. He was never arrogant about it, and shy in interviews. Blue collar roots. And, in the pre-MTV era, who could have known The Cars had another lead singer(Ben!!) other than Ric! Just so you know, some say that all The Cars songs are great stoners ... not that I would know ... I'm just sayin'. There is one other video that you must see ... I'll let you know when I find it again. Now some homework. Find The Cars "Touch and Go" live TV performance, put on some headphones and listen to Ben's intricate bass line.

This Situation Was Very Similar To When "The Police" Played At "The Horseshoe Tavern" Also In 1978...Extremely Sparse Audience! Only The Lucky Few Got To Enjoy This Intimate Setting. "The Police" Only Formed In 1977... Initially, Very Few Music Lovers Were "In Tune" With Their Sound...However, Only 2 Years Later...In 1980 When "The Police" Played "Massey Hall" Which Had Many More Seats...There Were Hundreds Of Fans Outside The Venue On That Night Crying For Tickets. Ben was such an original, natural rock performer, as opposed to the other awkward-on-stage band members.
He was never arrogant about it, and shy in interviews. Blue collar roots.
And, in the pre-MTV era, who could have known The Cars had another lead singer(Ben!!) other than Ric!
Just so you know, some say that all The Cars songs are great stoners ... not that I would know ... I'm just sayin'.

@@rayw3332 I believe all the band members are and were very talented and unique. Ric is an ingenious songwriter. However, Ben stood alone, with looks, talent, and humbleness, by far! I miss the 80s......it was such a happy time, especially musically. Of course, I have The Cars first album, which I think was released in 1978. They were so ahead of their time. Thank you for all the info and I look forward to the other video when you find it. I love the "Cruiser" performance on Tom Snyder.....😍

Yes of course they were all very talented. I didn't mean to demean that. What was fascinating is Ric would come up with the tune and rhythm and then the others would add in their parts, especially Elliot Easton!

"The Cars" Played In Toronto At "The El Mocambo" In 1978. (I Mistakenly Typed 60's...I'm Learning To Re-read What I Print Afterward). There Were Very Few In The Gathering Because At That Time...Very Few Music Lovers Had Caught The Cars Vibe Then...And Yes...This Was 2 Years After "The Cars" Were Formed. This Situation Was Very Similar To When "The Police" Played At "The Horseshoe Tavern" Also In 1978...Extremely Sparse Audience! Only The Lucky Few Got To Enjoy This Intimate Setting. "The Police" Only Formed In 1977... Initially, Very Few Music Lovers Were "In Tune" With Their Sound...However, Only 2 Years Later...In 1980 When "The Police" Played "Massey Hall" Which Had Many More Seats...There Were Hundreds Of Fans Outside The Venue On That Night Crying For Tickets. Begging!!
