  • We are at Mance horseshoe curve at one of the steepest parts of B&O, Baltimore and Ohio's Sand Patch grade in 1990 and 1991. We catch several trains dropping down grade in dynamic braking, and others in the eight notch fighting the grade, some with helpers on the rear. There are several meets while we where filming. You will see the last of the disappearing fast Chessie System locomotives, and a mixture of CSX units in various paint schemes.
    1---Chessie C&O #6068 leading a eastbound down grade. 9/09/1990
    2---Chessie # leading eastbound down grade. 10/06/1990
3---CSX #7584 westbound up grade, meets Chessie C&O #8625 east. 10/17/1990 (These two are actually at Fairhope, PA)
4---Chessie #8562 westbound as he passes an eastbound. 5/08/1991
    5---Chessie B&O #8252 westbound. 5/08/1991
    6---CSX #7730 westbound. 10/09/1991
    7---CSX #8028-8159 eastbound. 10/09/1991

I have always loved that older CSXT paint scheme.

I did as well. Especially with the blue trucks tanks and frames. They didn't stay blue very long, and got dirty pretty quick. Then it was hard to tell they were blue. Thanks for watching

Wow very cool I was 9 in 1990 and 10 years old in 1991 wow I can't believe that this was 30 31 years ago after watching this in 2021 I'm sure all them operated them trains are probably retried from the railroad great video

All that 4-axle power and spartan cabs. Never see that these days. They're pretty much all scrapped or relegated to short line service. Makes me feel friggin' old to watch these videos.

Man, all those old vans and trucks were brand new back then! :) Great footage as always. Sometimes I play your videos for nice background noise while I'm crafting.

Thanks Lorna. That does make great background music! I made a CD with all different high speed runbys by GE, EMD, and Alco. I'll get it in the car, and just blast it. Sounds great. Thanks for watching...

    Hey Jack,
A real honor and pleasure to watch another great time in history that I missed. Fantastic catches and loved the Chessies and CSX variety of schemes. God really blessed us...can't wait until the Southern Tier line sees more traffic so I can be a real railfan. God bless brother and thanks for this video.

Love the lashup at 7:15! Neat how the engines go in the order of CSX. A Chessie, a Seaboard, and then a CSX. Also cool with another Chessie on the rear and a hornshow too! Awesome video!

That Leslie at 10:28...and all the brand new YN2 and old open air autoracks. Great catches all around. Also, thanks for not being shaky video like many of the handheld tape cameras of the era!

Thanks, and glad you enjoyed it. Sometimes it was tuff back then, because I always tried to take video and 35mm slides of the same train. Sometimes it turned ou good, sometimes it didn't. The video was really secondary just for preservation, but I see now, there is a real market for it on UA-cam, and like going back in time. Thanks for watching...

What’s crazy to think, is that the only thing still kicking from those thirty years is the rail cars. Im sure there’s a handful of the vehicles we see that are still in “o.k.” condition, but you still got to figure they’re either in a junk yard or in someone’s back yard rotting away.

A dumb question perhaps, but why did they rely more on 4 axle power instead of 6 axle?
