    Tom Fowler played on the Bongo Fury tour, surely?

      Yes, and he would be back for the New Year’s 74 show….but he did not play the last couple shows of the main 74 Fall tour. Though he did act as “pointer” for his first show out. I believe there was a scale/key chart on stage and Tom would point at it to assist the last minute bass player replacement, Michael Urso. Urso was then replaced by Youmans. The solos in those shows are interesting.

      So, technically Tom was in the band but hexwas unable to play. When his hand was healed he was back to playing.
      On the Bongo Furyvtour George Duke and the Fowler realized that FZ was moving on from the '73/'74 era and they left.
      Chester Thompson was unavailable for that tour (he was touring with Weather Report) so, a good time to move on.

      The Inca Roads 50th box set should have a couple of Autumn '74 shows in it, I am quietly confident.

      @@plopcoen6222 inca Roads set? Different, previously unreleased live version of that song tracking it's evolution through the years! That could be interesting if there's a 15 minute '79 version in there.

      It should start with a Holiday in Berlin containing the Inca Roads post guitar solo theme….and yes, we need one more ‘88 Inca Roads simply for another Carmen horn solo.

    The Goteborg GTR solo was included as part of the obscure WSOU / South Orange guitar solo compilation Frank made for a local radio station in 1978. On the WSOU mix is quite different tho as it includes overdubs by Patrick O'Hearn.

    So the Göteborg guitar solo sounded familiar and I remembered it was mixed and edited by FZ on for an FM radio package called “The Impossible Concert” circa 1976, also known as “Watts” on some bootlegs. That full concert should really be released, if it is still in the vaults, it has an incredible version, with vocals, of Flambé and early prototypes of Zoot Allures, Po-Jama People and Can’t Afford No Shoes, very much a contrast to Helsinki!

    I agree that this lineup was the one to make "Dinah Moe Humm" sound the most palatable. I also would say they did great with the Yellow Snow suite, though no doubt FZ considered the 1979 version more polished. Sure, Vinnie and Arthur were a monster rhythm section, but it's nice to have George + Ruth for the '74 version, plus FZ still on guitar, which he definitely wasn't for the '79 version (because of his decision to only contribute vocals and improvised guitar solos from '78 onwards). Anyway, nice to know that DETYS was the encore for the show, absent from the circulating tape.
    From what I can recall, DETYS got some radio play in Pittsburgh in some edited form and so FZ decided to release a single by creating an edit, possibly along the lines that was played on the radio, or in some different form. But I think it's safe to say that the edit for the single was either done or at least greenlit by FZ.

    Cannot get enough live versions of Pygmy Twylyte. Also surely the anniversary edition of Bongo Fury is going to be fantastic?

      I have read in various places over the years that there may not be much in the Vault with regards to the Bongo Fury tour….ANY complete show would be win in my book but my understanding is that those simply may not exist. Hope I am wrong…..

    I'm reading comments here regarding next year having a OSFA 50th Anniversary.
    Is there any confirmation on that?
    What I really want, in any regard, is a full Spring '75 concerts with Beefheart.
    Bongo Fury is great but horribly foreshortened, just like that 75 cent glass of orange juice.
    For those of us old enough to listen to that in 1975, 75 cents was expensive for a glass of orange juice, about the size of his friendly little finger... But I digress.
    I want at least one good full show from Zappa/Beefheart/Mothers and even a really good Fall '75 show that has Swallow My Pride, Any Downers and the early Packard Goose, such as was played in Boston on a bootleg that I have from Oct. '75.

      From what I have read over the years, I think we have a better chance of there being more Fall shows in the vault than Spring shows, as far as ‘75 goes. I hope I am wrong.

      With all of these boxed sets coming out, we have '73 and '74 pretty well covered. Fall '75 is already covered with the Zagreb/Ljubljana discs, but they don't have the aforementioned songs.
      We don't have any full Spring '75 concerts.

    Are there any studio versions of Echidna's Arf (Of You) and Don't You Ever Wash That Thing? Edit: come to think of it, what about Pygmy Twylyte and Penguin In Bondage?

    • @edmundhobe2281
      @edmundhobe2281 День тому +3

      There's a proto-version of "Echidna's Arf" on the last year's Over-Nite anniv set, but it really has only a couple composed sections of it and then soloing. Generally speaking, it seems like with FZ, a lot of his music was only ever played live, not attempted in the studio, especially when he had more and more means to do high quality live recordings. I mean, a bunch of stuff got studio overdubs, so these Roxy songs you mention, not to mention a lot of the Sheik Yerbouti stuff, to speak nothing of many 80s recordings, except maybe the 1988 era, are hybrid recordings. Live basic tracks, studio overdubs.

    I'm guessing they'll do a One Size Fits All 50th anniversary box set in 2025? Your thoughts on that and which '75 shows do you want to see included if this box set is released?

    • @colewoodard8920
      @colewoodard8920 2 дні тому +1

      Kinda don't think that release, if they do one, would include any 75 shows. Spring 75 was the Bongo Fury material, and Fall 75 has little if nothing to do with the album. If anything, we'd maybe get more studio material from dec 74 to Jan 75, of which most of OSFA was taken. Maybe another fall 74 show too.

    • @colewoodard8920
      @colewoodard8920 2 дні тому +1

      I'm really hoping they dive head first into a Bongo Fury release, and give us as many shows as they can from that tour.

    • @theopinionatedhippie470
      @theopinionatedhippie470  2 дні тому

      Fall '74 shows make the most sense...even another Winter '74 show would work because of Andy and Florentine Pogen. AND you could argue that another Flo n Eddie show could be released because of Sofa. OSFA is an awesome hybrid.
      I would love to see a disc or two that tracks each song in its live incarnations i.e. Inca Roads from 73 to 74 to 79 to 88. That journey alone of all the songs would make it worthwhile. A lot of these songs would have counterparts on other releases, but if they were able to find unreleased live performances, the end result would be fascinating.

    • @uptowndonkey2038

      My guess is the One Size Fits All box is gonna be predominantly studio material. There's a lot to include if they decide to cover Sleep Dirt and the Studio Tan tracks recorded at the same time.

    Still waiting for my copy, but could the Yellow Snow single version be the one that some DJ edited for radio purposes, and actually gave the album its popularity? I have that on a 45rpm single, and it’s pretty much as you describe it.

    • @theopinionatedhippie470
      @theopinionatedhippie470  2 дні тому +1

      After the popularity of the (Pittsburg?) DJ-edited Yellow Snow single, didn't Frank do his own edit of it and that was what was released?
