AS BROWN AS IT GETS- LIVE! Ween, Paintin’ the Town Brown EPIC BROWNNESS!
Some of Neil's country stuff almost sounds like a parody of country music to me. The Grey Riders disc from the latest Archive set is abysmal. I couldn't manage to sit through Hawks & Doves often enough to give it a chance. I loved Trans (if you strip off the non-vocoder cuts). Can't wait to see your review of that divisive LP.
What do you think about the new Zappa release announced? Greetings
When this came out I listened to it a couple of times and then set it aside. Opera Star was the only song I ever revisited. I'll have to give it another go, maybe when I'm vacuuming or something. Thanks for the thoughtful review.
All good songs in my opinion but my favorite, especially the live versions, is Surfer Joe and Mo The Sleaze.
Could use a remaster.
I waited not anywhere near as long as some did, to hear these recordings and despite the less than prestine sound, it was worth it. I love the mythology surrounding these tapes, they were just making music because they wanted to. I grew up collecting crappy sounding bootlegs of artists I loved, so I am fine with these. For me this set has a certain magical quality to it. I know it's probably an unpopular opinion, but this is among my very favourite of the bootleg series.
Descriptive words are funny things... subjective certainly. I wouldn't call this "a really good album", either in relation to Neil's discography or compared to albums in general. It's too tossed off and inconsistent. I would call it "punky", "interesting" and one that's "fun" to listen to. My expectations were pretty low when I finally got a copy but I was "mildly impressed" with what I heard. The sound is tight and the embellishments (percussion, backing vocals, sound effects) do provide some sonic variety. Overall, it's a "shut your brain off" kind of listen. The backstory and Shaggy's categorization (with HAWKS & DOVES and TRANS) makes total sense. It doesn't add or subtract to the listening experience of RE*AC*TOR.
This is the comment AI suggested I make: “I like your assessment of it being "shut your brain off" listening. And I think that makes sense for it being the first album after the long silence. It is almost as if he just wanted to make noise for the sake of it.” AI is not as wise as many think it is…..
@@theopinionatedhippie470 Hilarious! I prefer the real thing every time. How long before I don't know the difference...?
There's a lyric in "Ra-pid Tran-sit" that comes to mind periodically, especially when someone talks about Neil being, "the father of punk", "new wave" or whatever - "Every Wave is New Until It Breaks." Yeah, all the way to the Beach.
I had the Pleasure and privilege of Meeting both Ben and Neil in 2003 meeting Them is an experience I will never ever forget
I really love this album. It feels like he was really inspired by post punk. “Opera star” sounds like it could’ve been by The Fall. I like those jokey quirky opera backing vocals too. Southern Pacific might be my favorite. It has a very subtle krautrock vibe to it. 17. Hawks And Doves 16. Long May You Run 15. Deja Vu 14. Comes A Time 13. Neil Young 12. Re*ac*tor 11. Homegrown 10. Chrome Dreams 9. American Stars N Bars 8. Rust Never Sleeps 7. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere 6. Zuma 5. Harvest 4. On The Beach 3. After The Gold Rush 2. Tonight’s The Night 1. Time Fades Away
That Krautrock element is more present in those transcendent live versions….
@ I need to check those out. Are they on Archives III. I’m only through the first half of the box
There is a version from A Treasure (stand alone release) on disc 14 or 15, and there is another performance on his 1984 Austin City Limits release….Krautrock with a banjo!!!!!
@ I’ll hunt those down! Thanks Shaggy😀
Love Imaginary Diseases and Little Dots. Looking forward to this arriving.
First album of the 80’s but feels like a foot in both camps. Here’s a few left over tracks from the 70’s and not really that good EP of country stuff that I don’t like. First half is ok, I do love Captain Kennedy, always have but find it better now elsewhere. 1 rust never sleeps 2 everybody knows 3 after the gold rush 4 zuma 5 time fades away 6 on the beach 7 tonight’s the night 8 Harvest 9 Comes A Time 10 American stars and bars 11 self titled 12 long may you run 13 Hawks and Doves
i thought huntington show would be the spinout
On a totally different random note. Touch of grey and standing on the moon are 2 grateful dead songs played live was never as good❤
Great review of a great release! I could definitely go for a box of this whole MSG run, not least for the different combinations of trio jams each night. Did you finish ‘89? Maybe I missed your thoughts on Miami somewhere along the way (obviously a killer!) Cheers Shaggy
I didn't finish '89. I decided after the Warlocks set, I would move on and save that Miami Dark Star for later. Give me something to look forward to.....but I will get to it! I think I may pick up that after Welnick before returning to the 60s.
Love this one!
Vince brought a lot to the band. He was really talented.
Solid review of a great live set. MASSEY HALL & the FILLMORE EAST disks highlight the two halves of Neil's muse: sensitive folkie and electric warrior held together with songs that mine the human condition.
Deep Purple at their very best!! No other band could come close!!
There is an Addition of this with a concert film of sorts on DVD although I think in this film is from a different show and they used the audio from Massey for the concert film
Yep….Massey Hall over video footage from a show later on the same tour…..kind of head scratching.
Agree, agree, agree man! Oh the Canada he drops on Journey through the past. Best Neil live album for me, Weld a close 2nd but for very different reasons
I was surprised you ranked it higher than Homegrown. For me this provides less. What I like is already available on albums scattered, stuff like Campaigner is kinda boring.
As an album, the flow of Homegrown does not work for me. And some songs sound better to me on their official releases. Also, in general, I find these What Could Have Been albums interesting but not as compelling, as far as repeat listens go….
Nice review! Id like if you plsyed a couple lines from each song. I love Neil Young!
There’s actually a studio outtakes version of Bad Fog Of Loneliness on the Harvest 50th box set
Yes, this is one of my favourites too, along with Live at the Riverboat 1969 and Carnegie Hall 1970
I was a young teen when this came out in 2007 and I bought it at a Starbucks. I was really into After The Gold Rush, Harvest, self titled and Decade at the time. This release BLEW ME AWAY. It had the intimacy that a lot of those After The Gold Rush songs had and I loved his take on his Buffalo songs. One of my personal favorite live releases ever!!
This is really interesting look as to what Rush consider their roots
Hey Shaggy, I am currently listening to this and I agree, it's a fantastic set, not as good as Time fades away, but hey that album sounds so raw. One thing I have noticed, whenever Neil plays piano, every now and then he hits a big fat bum chord, he hits a few during After the gold rush and I am pretty sure he does the same on other live albums when he plays piano. I realise it's not his first instrument and if he did the same when playing guitar it would perhaps notice more, but as a listener I have a certain amount of tolerance about it... Am I the only one who notices this?
I like the Slayer covers album more than most of their original stuff hahaha.
Commercial Album is one of my favorites. It kills me John Travolta and Barbra Streisand on the cover.
At the end of Eskimo they say “Coca-Cola adds life” from the commercial. Seen then live twice.
O.H. Any Frank stories to share about Zappa and the Weird Scenes in the Canyon ? (Laurel Canyon, Covert Ops)
I wish….
“ Live music is better bumper stickers should be issued”
Nice work!
Interesting, always!
The almost-12-minute unedited "Apostrophe" I enjoyed very much. Loved the Colorado Springs "Dupree's Paradise and RDNZL."
Zappa himself wearied of "Dinah-Moe Hum."
Nice!
Love 1989, my ONLY complaint about late 89-90 is when Jerry goes midi. I don’t love the sound of his midi guitar. But everything else is amazing
I actually had the cassette of this in the mid 80s....found it in a discount bin. Coastline was good but other tunes like Captain Kennedy, Union Man and H&D made me press the FF button. Gave it away years later.
I wasn't sure what to expect from this release because this is almost a transition band in some ways. It's nothing like the '73-'74 band, so I was expecting a different sound. To my surprise, I really liked this release. It’s a Frank/Terry Bozzio album. The music is a little dark in some ways. I wish Chunga's Revenge wasn't split up because the second half on disc 2 is amazing. A nice surprise at the end when Frank announces the band and Todd Rundgren is on guitar.
Ah yes - the one which I've always argued is the definitive Purple live album (not MIJ). They were on a high during this tour (see also the Swiss Yodel bootleg and the murky-but-great Croydon tape). The obvious comment is how Neck* and Root, despite being longer, have less flab than the better known BBC radio, French TV and Montreux takes. But the other numbers are more-or-less in peak form: everyone should get around to hearing this Child In Time jam. (* Some of JL's musical quotations get on my nerves, but I always grin from ear to ear at the Unsquare Dance interlude)
Stay Forever was my wife and I’s first dance song at our wedding
"Long May You Run" is about a hearse that died--apparently, it decided to follow the customers.
This is a killer!!! My first ever CD bought in November 1988
Loving this series !
When the melody of Winterlong comes, i always got a whif of Don't Worry Baby.
Thanks for the PSA, Shaggy! I’ve always been oddly curious about this album on vinyl when I see it out in the wild.. and actually have almost bought it a few times. Usually cheap; thx to your review here, I now know why. Ha.
Too many ums 🤠
