I would go with "Uncle Remus" simply because it's been put together more professionally than the rest of the tracks on the album. The worst track goes to its self-titled track.
A maestro of mayhem, a master of sound Silenced by fate, on a cold winter's ground December 4th, a day that will forever ache The loss of a legend, a heart that would no longer create His guitar lies still, his voice is no more The absurdity of life, he can no longer explore The world is a duller place, a less colorful sight Without the spark of Frank, shining with delight We mourn the loss of a prophet, a poet of old A champion of free speech, a heart that was bold He spoke truth to power, with a wit sharp as a knife And left us with a legacy, a lifelong strife His music remains, a testament to his name A challenge to conformity, a call to break the chain But oh, the songs that will never be sung The jokes that will never be told, the riffs that will never be flung Farewell, dear Frank, may your memory never fade May your music continue, to inspire and invade The hearts and minds of all, who refuse to be tamed And may your spirit of rebellion, forever be proclaimed."
Great detailed review on Apostrophe. Thanks for doing that. Obviously, a box set for "One Size Fits All" would be fantastic but I would also really like to have a box set of the "Bongo Fury" album. There is some unreleased music from that time that hasn't seen the light of day. A version of "The Portuguese Lunar Landing" would be fun to hear. Also, the unedited version of 200 Years Old would be nice (I did my best to piece that one together but there should be no reason to. ua-cam.com/video/6-cST46oFU4/v-deo.html In fact, all the tracks from the Caribou recording sessions (1974-75) would make for an interesting box set.
Great video! "Apostrophe" so good! My faves are St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast and the title track! I'm new to the VC. Posted my first video about 4 weeks ago. I just discovered your channel and like it. I subbed and look forward to your next video. Cheers.
“ Overnight” was my intro to FZ via a buddys older brothers albums , which we regularly raided. We showed up for the dirty lyrics and stayed for the genius. This was next. Peak FZ on both albums. His discography is a lifetime listen. I am sure I will eventually have to have this. My “ to buy” list is way too long.
This is gonna stick as my favorite version of Approximate ever. Gawwwdarmmm. That great. Been playing the first show today. Excellent proto versions too. First heard this on vinyl in 1979 at my aunt and uncles place.
I missed out on the Hot Rats box as well.. I just hated the whole board game idea (and agree with you totally about the book). I did get it recently second hand, but it still wasn't cheap. I also much prefer the clam box presentation but think that the price should be lower. I would love the haloween sets to be released like that (there's no way I'm paying out for a load of rubbery tacky nonsense - Cheepnis indeed). Anyway, this box set is great, but there are some issues with it (mostly price related). I look forward to the day I get a surround sound to play the BR on! 😄
@@pauldenby878 I think OS50 eventually went down in price on Amazon to around $65 or so, I didn’t want to take the risk of this selling out since it’s such a big important album.
Nice review but Waka/Wazoo was not the first in the series of multi disc box sets. I would say that the YCDTOSA box was the first followed by many others including MOFO, Mothers 1970, Mothers 1971, Roxy, Hot Rats, 200 Motels, Erie and of course the Halloween boxes.
@@smurdsmurd oh yes, of course - but I specifically meant this style of clamshell case with Dolby Atmos bluray included. Should’ve been more clear, thank you.
Superb detailed review, Ian. Thanks! I do love the clamshell box editions of Waka/Wazoo, and Overnite Sensation. I hope we get a One Size Fits All edition next year. Good luck with your search for a copy of the Hot Rat Sessions.
Great presentation! I was introduced to Zappa's music with Overnight Sensation in 1973 when I was 11 years old which made me have to have Apostrophe in 1974. Frank was at a creative peak as far as his comedic subject matter, composing and guitar playing. Of course, that configuration of the Mothers was one of the best bands ever.
Now I know how your last name is pronounced. I once bought a CD from you on Discogs. I also remember seeing posts from you on Progressive Ears. Thanks for doing this fantastic FZ set.
Very nice detailed video Ian. I'm planning a trip down to the best record stores in NJ and PA in October and I'll keep an eye open for it. I thought it was a bit pricy, but who am I kidding, I need it.
I have to say. The sound on the live shows is to me… really good and totally acceptable without any problems. I keep hearing all these comments about that and it makes me laugh some. I know you are a sound guy but what is the problem here? My bootleg ears are certainly influencing my view of this. Ok. To me. They sound GREAT. Road Tapes 2 is one of my all time fav shows and the sound is also darn good to me. Shrug.
@@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout I love the tight analysis you do, dont get me wrong. :) Sometimes I think people are just spoiled with this stuff. I think I just like slightly grotty sound recordings if I'm being honest. The nicer and slicker the more I tend to not like them as much. HA. @@Phlakaton88 I think they are not even true 4 track recordings … I think they are stereo soundboards with an audience mic and a blank mic, so no real chance to mix or clean up at all. In these cases, I’m guessing these recordings were entirely made for reference and never intended for official release, which is fine! I liked the review very much but here are a few things I did not think were quite right. First up you stated that the boxset was MASSIVE! My answer to that is a big NO! It's puny and quite Frankly a piss poor way to present and represent Frank's great music on the cheap like this and in my opinion it totally SUCKS!. Secondly, I understand why you like the Clamshell box for storing purposes but did you know that the Clamshell Box was originally designed to sell all or part of bands' and artists' discography on the cheap. I have many of these CD boxsets that come with anywhere from 4 - 6 CD's and they all cost around 20 to 30 bucks which means that the Blu Ray that comes in this boxset they are charging you over 60 bucks for it and this is where they've got surround Freaks like myself by the balls No way is this boxset worth 99 bucks and an honest price point would be around the 40 to 50 bucks mark.
What's your favorite track on "Apostrophe (')" ?
Possibly…Uncle Remus??? But I love the whole record!!!

I always recommend the book- The Big Note- Charles Ulrich, to any and all Zappa fans. More info about all FZ music than anyone could ever need.
