It's at least a great lock to show the effectiveness of picking to get into the toughest lock. I agree with the assumption that thieves probable don't pick, but raking is a different story. With only standard pins and that bitting it's open in seconds with a rake, I believe. Two security pins and it would be a much better lock.
You inspired me to order a set of lock picks cause I love your videos and a good challenge. I just picked my first lock and the feeling is amazing. Took me about 3 minutes and it was this exact lock. I’m starting to understand how to “feel”what I’m doing thanks again!
It is the only lock I have to practice with, besides the standard lockpick clear stuff (which is easy). Sometimes I get it open in a minute and at times it takes ten. I have been picking for a week. I find going from the back forward is easiest. Pin four (fourth from front) is like a bridge, hiding five. I ordered and am using no. 5 deeper curve to go over it. Interesting to watch others. I have even raked it open. One thing I have found out is ... I will think I do not have it open, then I will torque the tension bar and find out it will pop right open.
i found one of these on the street next to a construction site. it had been run over pretty badly and was not useable for locking as surprisingly the shackle BENT, but the lock mech still functioned. super easy pick.
The drain hole on the bottom is perfectly aligned with the top of the bible allowing you to drill the top of the bible off and the pins just pop out, would love to see you make a video doing so, love the channel keep up the great work!!!
I picked up a set of picks and gave it a try on the Master Lock Magnum No. M15 lock. First time trying took me 30 minutes. Certainly not record time, but hey it was my first time trying to pick a lock.
Thanks... Seems to be a pretty common theme with not just master locks, but many different brands. It's really a shame. That said, I understand that picking is considered a low risk attack vector.
The really sad thing is that Master lock uses spools and serrated pins and no countersinking of the core in their lock out/tag out locks. I understand that SPP can open many locks, but without spools, the lock is much more vulnerable to random raking or other less deliberate attacks. Maybe they are trying to save some money somewhere.
I just wanted to point something out. Contrary to what you stated in the video this lock does NOT have a ball bearing locking mechanism. The cuts on the hasp makes it look that way but if you inspect inside the hole you will discover that there aren't ball bearings.
On that note, i have two of these, one is a ball bearing and one is a rolling bearing, other wise they are both identical. Both from Ace hardware bought on the same day too.
ya I definitely got a quirky 1. I opened it once and haven't been able to open it again. Bitting is a lot wilder and I set the key right on top of the vise it feels like I copy the key perfect then press everyone to see if they need a little nudge and check to make sure all key pins are down so nothing is over set. I have to occasionally go back to my American and Brinks to make sure it isn't me and they open just as quick as I can hit the pins. Maybe a factory screw up that they should repeat more often. PS key works perfect no hang ups.
Are there any really high cuts on the key (i.e., little or no material removed from the key blank)? If so, try leaving that pin alone altogether and see what happens. Let me know.
I had one! An easy pick, strangely the M5 was a little harder to open. I wonder why they even manufacturer such an inferior "MAGNUM" padlock. The packaging verbage was very impressive but quality was up to the low standards of Master. I can't even use it for a practice lock since it is so predictable.
That's surprising. The M5 is 4 pins. I suppose that bitting could affect things, but with that open keyway there shouldn't be any problems regardless of bitting. What was the problemon the M5?
This is not a laminated body, it's just cast to look laminated. I'm holding one in my hand as I write this - the "laminate" lines don't go around the entire body and are interrupted by two casting marks. The caps that the "rivets" are holding in place are of thin soft metal and can be easily pried off (or in my case all dented from rough use). About the only thing that may be solid on this padlock is the shackle, and I seriously doubt that too. I'm glad I didn't pay a penny for this piece of crap.
I think I'm too heavy handed, I snapped the rake pick and bent a standard pick, there was dirt in the lock as it was in my shed for awhile. Any recommendations on a bump tool. Great video.
I'm having issues picking this M15, mine is labelled as an Excell though I doubt there's any difference, what's giving me trouble is probably the bitting, but the tolerances seem much tighter than other Master Locks, it can be a real mixed bag with them as I have a smaller Master Lock with spools in it and can pick that no problem.
Is there a chance they improved these locks? I just got one to practice picking on and it doesn't feel as straight forward as other locks I've picked. Definitely a bit more of a challenge. Do they update them over the years and keep the same series "m15" name or na not a thing?
Hey LPL! first off love the channel! I have been watching ur vids everyday. I have had this lock (m15) for at least two weeks and have yet to pick it. On one hand I like the challenge on the other I really need to pop this bad boy so I can run out and get something with a removable core. I suppose I could give it a rest buuuut momma didn't raise a quitter. 1. Do i pick from the front of the key way toward the shackle or vice versa. 2. How far back should the pick go in the keyway? 3.Any learning vids you can point me towards?
You just brought something onto yourself .... But really, this lock is all show but no substance. Sure, it's just under 15$, but for 15.01$ you get the 60mm (actually it's 65mm) Stanley 24/7.
Did they make an improved version of this M15 in 2019-20? I'm newish to SPP ( I open all new locks this way before I rake them) and have been able to pick 10 different padlocks previous to trying a 2020 M15. It's not my lock, so I only get to try it when ever I'm at my Dad's shop (and yes, he knows) but after a few 10min sessions, I have yet to open it. Did they add security pins? It seems like I keep getting false sets.
This was the first lock I ever picked, cracked it in 20 minutes (I know, shoddy) never having picked up a... pick before - since then, I've only successfully managed it a handful of times! Need practice big time! I picked up a smaller version of some master lock or another, but it was way too easy, the pinning order was a piece of piss, and the lock gives of an enormous whipcrack every time you bump the pin into place so it was apples and oranges. In short, I need to know what locks to pick up to improve without breaking the bank, as such that this (apparently piss easy ) lock will no longer be a challenge. Anyone, any suggestions?
Any reason the M1 Lishi doesn't fit this? Keyway looks identical to the No 3 masterlock which the lishi fits. I've been able to SPP this lock but just curious of bypass methods.
Was thinking the same thing. Seems this particular keyway is just a hair thinner than other master locks. I have an M1 amd got it because i sucked at picking this only to find out the lishi didnt fit lol
I'm looking for a gym locker lock, I just got broken into with a dolor store letter turny lock. I'm ready to upgrade guys, what's the safest lock for a gym locker room lock? I was considering a HYT Chain Key... Thank you all.
Possibly... even likely. But I've never been much of a raker because I don't spend much time practicing. As such, SPP is usually faster for me, and is certainly the higher percentage attack.
IDK it just seems they put a considerable effort in its destructive resistance, it seems it wouldn't be any harder to throw a few functioning security pins in and tighten up the tolerances...
If they put just one security pin in, it would elevate pick resistance to a point that I might actually use one to secure something! I agree with LPL that Master locks are actually very well made.
perhaps well made if all you're worried about is sledge hammers and bolt cutters. I would say that that should be good enough. But I know someone that has had 3 bikes stollen and they were able to by either picking or shimming, there was no evidence of a violent entry. So know he invested in a much much higher security bike lock and he's been fine.
It's at least a great lock to show the effectiveness of picking to get into the toughest lock. I agree with the assumption that thieves probable don't pick, but raking is a different story. With only standard pins and that bitting it's open in seconds with a rake, I believe. Two security pins and it would be a much better lock.
Agreed.
to be fair, master lock does have its place in security and as practice locks for new lockpickers.
You inspired me to order a set of lock picks cause I love your videos and a good challenge.
I just picked my first lock and the feeling is amazing. Took me about 3 minutes and it was this exact lock. I’m starting to understand how to “feel”what I’m doing thanks again!
Are you planning a series of crimes now with these picking tools?
Oldest luggage no busy buddge
Just got one. Raked it open then SPPed it. I'm an absolute beginner so I appreciate everything you do. Learning lots
I bought one, the lock is built like a fortress with a screen door.
Your qualifier "other than pick resistance" was quite
It's good for most brute force attacks, but that pick resistance... well, its stunning that they don't do more.
It is the only lock I have to practice with, besides the standard lockpick clear stuff (which is easy). Sometimes I get it open in a minute and at times it takes ten. I have been picking for a week. Nice find... they do hold up to some abuse... but that core!
Wow 20 seconds that was awesome ! Great job brother as always. Thanks for the review
The drain hole on the bottom is perfectly aligned with the top of the bible allowing you to drill the top of the bible off and the pins just pop out, would love to see you make a video doing so, love the channel keep up the great work!!!
Some say, masterlock is stepping up their game
Just bought this lock, considerably better biting though. Still only took 5 minutes to pick out of the box, and I'm not that good.
Just had the identical experience as a beginner.
I picked up a set of picks and gave it a try on the Master Lock Magnum No. M15 lock. First time trying took me 30 minutes. Certainly not record time, but hey it was my first time trying to pick a lock.
Not allowing that core to be replaced is like adding insult to injury. :/ On the bright side, it makes for an interesting video. :)
LOL, Thanks.
strong looking lock, but no guts! well done, good video.
Thanks... Seems to be a pretty common theme with not just master locks, but many different brands. It's really a shame. That said, I understand that picking is considered a low risk attack vector.

I agree, it is a little sad. At the price point, they will never be formidable locks, but they could be so much better for negligible cost. Oh well.
I picked up one recently and came to the same conclusion. nice body and shackle but horrible core. maybe they will figure it out one day
I'm sure they figured it out. But doing something about it is a different story.
I just wanted to point something out. Contrary to what you stated in the video this lock does NOT have a ball bearing locking mechanism. The cuts on the hasp makes it look that way but if you inspect inside the hole you will discover that there aren't ball bearings.
True enough... it uses roller bearings, which operate in the exact same way and are superior from a security standpoint.
LockPickingLawyer Thank you for the clarification. That is something I needed to learn.
On that note, i have two of these, one is a ball bearing and one is a rolling bearing, other wise they are both identical. Both from Ace hardware bought on the same day too.

Got it now I was using bottom of the keyway and I think it was binding. Now I'm using same as you but #4 hook in .018.
Guy just shipped my Mul-T-lock too. You have anything to do with that or was it just coincidence?
+Randy Perkins glad to hear it... pure coincidence.
+Randy Perkins oh, that could definitely be the problem. I don't use bok tension much, so I don't think about that issue. Glad you got it sorted.
I had one! An easy pick, strangely the M5 was a little harder to open. I wonder why they even manufacturer such an inferior "MAGNUM" padlock. I just watched your next video regarding the M5 Magnum, that is the lock I was referring to, not the blue banded Series 5.
This is not a laminated body, it's just cast to look laminated. I'm holding one in my hand as I write this - the "laminate" lines don't go around the entire body and are interrupted by two casting marks. I think they should be called Fasterlock lol
A lot faster to get into!
I like it!
😢 Me hanging my head in shame when i cant pick this lock reliably and search YT LPL M15 and hear him say, this is not impressive... 🤣😂
Been trying to pick one of these. I just suck. Lol
I think I'm too heavy handed, I snapped the rake pick and bent a standard pick, there was dirt in the lock as it was in my shed for awhile. Any recommendations on a bump tool.
Great video.
This lock has kicked my ass for 5 straight hours and ive used combs, rakes and spp to try and open it
I'm glad I'm not alone lol
No security pins and they rate it as security level 10. Crazy.

UK or US? The UK ones seem to have security pins in them. either that or I'm just shit at picking locks!
I have a couple of these to keep kids out of a box. I assumed before this video, this was the case.
between this one and an m5 what would you recommend for a bigginer like me?
thanks a lot
Good job and very good video. Thanks!

Got it after about what seemed like ,forever. The answer was tension! Tension! Tension!
Did you find you needed moderate tension?
Was this not part of the padlock ranking series?
I think you should do a Master padlock series only, American Sec. only, no names, etc. !
+LOST FOUND because it's too big. The 50mm magnum padlock is coming very soon. Not a bad idea for a series. I'll think about it.
This thing apparently has a zinc actuator. But with that kind of pick resistance, that doesn´t really matter.
Still... if it is zinc, it could make for a fun video! ;-)
You just brought something onto yourself ....

I have a recent one and it's thus far defeating me. I am no pro though..
Even if Master suddenly decided to put in descent cores, their name will always be tarnished. They already have a bazillion crappy locks out there!👍🙃
what kind of tool pick set would you recommend to learn how to pick lock for beginner?
You always say click out for a click out a five little bit out of three there’s one on two, but what does that mean like can you go in to detail?
This was the first lock I ever picked, cracked it in 20 minutes (I know, shoddy) never having picked up a... pick before - since then, I've only successfully managed it a handful of times! Do you reccomend top key tension bar
The first lock I ever picked

interesting I always wonder if the guys that design these locks realize how insecure they are.
They don't care
+brian easton Traditionally, thieves aren't picking locks, but with all the youtube videos out now, that may change, however, I doubt it.
IDK it just seems they put a considerable effort in its destructive resistance, it seems it wouldn't be any harder to throw a few functioning security pins in and tighten up the tolerances...

If only it was rekeyable... So close
Can it be bypassed?
I don't think so, but didn't explore it. It certainly can't be bypassed with the Master Switch type tools.
Why can't you get a decent lock in a store? It's always crap. Why not have a few high end locks.
Another video that shouldn't be on UA-cam. Yes, Have a nice day in jail for encouraging robberies!
Oh jesus
