  • The German brand A. Lange & Söhne is-while not Swiss-one of the very best watchmakers in the world. The styling is immediately recognisable, stark and crisp, and the movements have a certain quality to them that makes them distinctly German. Of course, the price that comes attached to a watch like this Richard Lange edition is well into the £30,000 territory-but what if you could have one for a quarter of the price? Welcome to the next best thing: the Glashütte Original Senator Panorama Date.

      both watchmakers put a lot of emphasis on detail, not just lange. people need to realize, while lange is much more expensive, glashutte isnt by no means a "cheaper" watch, in fact, its still put together better than most swiss watches eg. rolex, etc...

      All clocks and watches with roman numerals are inscribed with IIII instead of IV. It’s just one of those irrational things we’ve picked up a long time ago, like only buttoning the first suit jacket button.

    In addition to great content, your close-up photography of the watch movements, especially the ALS, is simply amazing and really drives home the point about the almost fanatical attention to detail ALS gives to its movements. But of course, there is a price for that. Question is, is it worth it? And the answer of course if purely subjective. For me, I love ALS and movement in the Split Second Datograph is mystifying. Of course that's just my opinion...

    Maybe a comparison between movements of a $30k Lange vs a $25k± glashutte original would more accurate (i have no experience with a 30k GO so I'm curious and the Lange finish should be consistent across their model lines) although the dial configuration might not be so similar. I also think the pano series movement's appear higher quality than the senators, although the price range isn't too far off. For instance Golden chatons in the pano gangreserve, and hand engraved Swan neck regulator.

    Both are excellent watches, but, it would be a better comparison if both are manual wind. Collectors normally consider manual wind more desirable. If you have 30K Pound to spare, Lange is the obvious choice. If not, there is an affordable alternative. Yipsir, a watch connoisseur from HK, when he talks about the GS SBGW series called this the best of watches. This is a high end Three Centre Hand manual wind with long minute hand and an even longer second hand, similar to the Lange. He says watch collectors called this type of second hand, the 'Third Hand.' It takes an excellent mechanism to carry this Third Hand in high frequency (24J, 4Hz) for 72 hours an at same time keep 'chronometer time'. Recommended by him, I bought the latest SBGW231 for 3K after 25% regular discount. It gives me plus 2 sec day for 75 hours. As for the finishing, though it doesn't have the elaborated engraving like the Lange or a Credor, it's impressive, especially considering the price point. Then, again, what about the specs compared to the L041.2 (26J, 38 hr, 3Hz)?

      When watches are rare, we called them a luxury. When they can dance even in dim light, making your heart skip a little, that pleasure is a luxury. They need not be complicated and need not be expensive. Complications are nice, but, there is no end to it. That's why there is no so thing as a grail watch. Still, complication for complication sake, the Wadokei by the genius Masahiro Kikuno would be my pick.

It is not necessary to say that someone is competing with someone here, these are two different watches in terms of style within the same class, therefore the Glashütte is definitely more aesthetically attractive:)

    That unique hand-crafted swan neck is not present on this GO model, however, you can see it on GO PanoMaticLunar (mvt. 90-02) for example. So, it is not unique to ALS, and GO shows that world class hand-crafting on a watch movement can be done at $10K price level as well.
    Not to mention, GO has the most unique, and arguably the best, big date execution among high-end watchmakers. It offers two discs at the same level without the need for a separator as found in ALS, VC, Breguet etc.
    That ALS is magnificent, the question is whether GO is a better value or not. I tend to think GO is a better value, and the use of steel definitely helps it. But I'd like to take the discussion to another level by stating that both of these German watches are better values compared to their Swiss counterparts.

    I'm thinking of buying a high end watch, or at least putting away some funds to save up for one in the future. What should I go for, a Lange 1 Timezone in Platinum or an F.P.Journe Octa Lune Date also in Platinum. They are both about the same price, and while I could be getting a pretty good car for that money, I really want a top of the line wristwatch more than anything. One that isn't necessarily flashy, but will be admired by all those who know watches. I'm a big fan of Patek Philippe but I feel that while their watches are just about the same level as Lange and F.P Journe, they are 3-5 times more expensive. So, any thoughts? I heard F.P Journe servicing costs are a bitch and that no one can even get the case open without the right tools.

    • @felixarbable
      @felixarbable 6 років тому

      from a watchmakers perspective i would go for something from someone indipendant like urban jurgensen or haldimann at that price. but of all the big brands if my hand was forced id go lange but you are just feeding richmont. i think there is something nice about keeping smaller brands alive and it makes for more interesting talks with watch frinds over dinner

    • @watchfinder
      @watchfinder  6 років тому

      For me, FP Journe surpasses Lange and Patek (though don't forget we're talking law of diminishing returns here), however resale can be trickier than the other two. All will be expensive to service, as you would expect for the level of watch you're buying. For resale, Patek Philippe, for watchmaker's watchmaker, FP Journe-Lange somewhere in the middle. Other alternatives include Vacheron Constantin and-if you pick one up pre-owned and let someone else take the hit of depreciation for you-H Moser, Roger Dubuis or Parmigiani Fleurier.

    • @interstellarlapisthecccp4946

      It will definitely be a tough decision... I prefer the face of the F.P Journe to any other dress watch I've seen but I prefer the look of the Lange 1 movement. I don't know what it is, I just love the way Lange finishes them with both brushed and polished surface, it looks like it's higher quality than any other movement even if that isn't the case. I will have to have a closer look at the Journe first and see which I prefer.

    Could you review the Seiko SPC129P1. I know its nothing compared to the watches you review here and you would probably ignore this but I think its a great watch for a budding watch enthusiast. Something to start from.

    Great video just like the rest of your vids. Can you please review the Rolex OysterDate Ref. 6694? Thanks !

    Love the GO Senator Panorama Date Moonphase, I think it gives the JLC MUT Moon a run for its money.

    I respect the Glashutte and A/Lange and Sohne, but there watches are way to large in both size (i prefer 39mm or smaller) and also thickness.

    Amazing content, thank you very much
    Could you review the glasshute original panomatic lunar with the double swan neck and compare it to a lange 1? I think that would be a great part 2 of this video
