For some reason Chris is one of the very few instructors is always explaining critical pieces about the golf swing that I wanted to improve on. Not only that but his drills and explanations seem to click with how I understand the swing. I incorporated many things from his videos and I am finally swinging the club with solid fundamentals. It was about time I subscribed.

Chris, your life has not been wasted on idle "theories" and rehashed ideas. Your lessons and drills, and this video in particular, really demonstrate an understanding of both the swing and the pupil that struggles with this very important release issue--which is me. Thank you.

One of the best drills I’ve ever seen. I think this is one of the most important but poorly understood parts of the swing and this drill really helps. Thank you Chris.

Chris, you are brilliant. This tip is the best I've seen on the late release. I have struggled for the last 10 years looking and trying different things to achieve what this simple drill described. I didn't even have to do the drill...I just went to the range and it came naturally using the visual of the chair. Helped me trap the ball better as well. And improved my finish. Fantastic. I am forever grateful.

It's just a shame almost every golfer on the planet doesn't get to see this video. It's the best drill I've ever seen to help people actually see what it means to release and hit a quality shot. I'm a low handicapper and amateur tournament winner that has never understood why teachers never talk about the release and how to develop a better one until just lately, with the advent of slow-mo and the high tech invasion we've seen. Great video with some noteworthy comments by Chris. Nice work.

This is gold. It is difficult to help students get the feeling of a good release. This could provide instantaneous feedback. Thanks!

Hey Ryan Im still a beginner and Im learning the majority of my stuff from youtube. There is so much stuff and so many microlessons to remember and I find myself forgetting everything by trying to do it all. Any tips on what to focus on or how to try and apply all things at one time in a real swing?

Ha I saw you filming today, and was going to ask a drill for exactly this, but had to rush off for a work thing! really struggling with head catching up my hands if I dont really concentrate on that.

Chris, at 3.16 into the video you speak about the golfer "releasing as hard as they like" into the ball. Do you mean that you are consciously hitting down by deliberately unhinging the angle in your left wrist or is it that angle released just by gravity/centripetal force. Hope that makes sense.

good video as always but how do you get into that position where your hands are in front of your right thigh with shaft at last parallel? I can do this with a practice swing easily but put a ball down and I hit from the top...so frustrating. unfortunately my hands are in front of my right thigh at impact which explains why I balloon every club and lose massive distance.

When i try to simulate like u my right heel comes off ground and then i top the ball or skull it.i noticed your right foot stays on the ground by doing this. How to move laterally, is there any drill?

  • @auzzyboy276

I don't understand what the release 'feels like' what releases the club besides the body slowing down, the unhinging the wrists? i always struggled with this but have now been advised my grips are to small which cause me to flip my wrists.. I quickly tried a midsize (more fitting grip) and instantly felt my fingers working against the pad of my hand, suddenly i was hitting big draws a lot futher than usual with less effort is this the correct feel for the unhinging of the club? iam currently waiting for my clubs to have my new grips fitted:)

Hi Chris, could you help me with any video you have on ball flight. I have a very low ball flight for both my irons and driver. I use a mizuno stiff shaft irons(blades) and a cobra 10,5 driver - regular flex

Chris, I understand the feel that you are trying to integrate into the swing, using this drill.
However, a lot of amateurs have trouble with the transition. Consequently, they cannot achieve the starting position of this drill.
Simply showing them this position isn't going to get them there!
Also, it's biomechanically proven that from the starting position of this drill, until impact, the hands are moving upward and the clubhead downward.
This is due to the pelvic rotation, leverage of the ground (GRF) and straightening of the lead leg to impact. This drill does not demonstrate that.

Hi Neil, completely agree with you and all the points you make, also I am fully aware of the 3D path of the hands and butt of the club through impact. The drill and the video was entitled 'feel' the late release for the exact reason. I use this drill to demonstrate to golfers how it may 'feel' different I what they currently do. I appreciate that having this feel will not suddenly create the patterns to achieve these 'looks' in the golf swing. As I said I agree with all the points you raise, many of my videos are designed to educate golfers, get them to understand the motion a little more and in certain cases feel some different things.
